Seeing John Lennon and Paul McCartney singing side by side is one of the greatest things in life.

Note how relaxed and comfortable they are on stage. That's a result of 8 hours a night 7 days a week in Hamburg.

Don’t underestimate their early stuff, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. It’s best to start early and listen to them morph and blossom continuously during their too short career together. Enjoy!

This was after the Beatles came to the US. They were world wide stars by the time of this show.

They started by being the best rock n roll band in the world. Then they became something else entirely. Looking forward to the rest of your journey.

I think sometimes people tend to think of their early stuff as inferior to their later output but I find it amazing they were able to turn out so many melodious hits so quickly while continuously touring. No one else could have done it, which is why they conquered the world. And their harmonies were always heavenly. Calling them a boy band is kind of insulting actually. This was not a bunch of good looking guys assembled by a crafty producer.

By the time the Beatles were only in their mid-twenties, they had toured the world several times, met kings, queens, princes, heads of state, celebrities, etc., literally conquered the world, all while cranking out two albums plus singles per year. Wherever they went on the planet, everyone knew who they were yet they still had so much more to offer that was coming. There was so much talent in that band it isn't funny.

You mentioned them being considered a bad influence, and even though they're all wearing suits and ties, their hair was considered outrageous by parents. No one had long hair like that combed down in the front and over their ears. It was scandalous!

"I Feel Fine", "Ticket to Ride", "Yesterday", and "Help!" were all number one hits in the USA in 1965. They had five number ones in the US in 1964, including three that succeeded in that chart position in a row. These three were "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (7 weeks at #1), "She Loves You" (2 weeks), and "Can't Buy Me Love (5 weeks)". These were followed later by "Love Me Do" and "A Hard Day's Night". This is just so you know that whoever told you they were unknown in the US at the time of this performance was quite mistaken.

It wasn't simply their music that struck a chord with teens in Britain and America. Their insouciance with the older press people was refreshing for youngsters. Beatlemania had already taken hold in England before they came to the States. They were unknown in November, 1963, when JFK was assassinated. Ten weeks later, they appeared on Ed Sullivan's Show to a TV audience of 73 MILLION people! Seven weeks later, the Beatles occupied the top FIVE positions on Billboard, April 4th, 1964. This will never be equalled by any group or person. And they'd just got started.

Two things I really like about this. First, I'm always impressed that in a world where most hit songs are defined by 4 chords, the Beatles songs were not simple and quite unique even when playing within a genre. Second, their playing is very tight. They did not stop touring because they couldn't play. They stopped because they were done with touring.

In 1965, the Beatles were very well-known in the US. Seeing the Beatles together like this always gladdens the spirit in someone as old as I am. Seeing John and Paul harmonizing in the same mic? The world is a better place for that moment. Best friends having a great time working their butts off. As John would say, 'To the toppermost of the poppermost'. And they did, too.

They LOOKED like, what we would now call, a boyband but they were anything but... They weren't 'created'. They'd been gigging and touring, in the UK and Germany, for years, before getting a record deal. They wrote their own music and played their own instruments. I'm not sure that any genuine boyband will ever be described as, 'the best songwriters of the modern era and potentially the greatest of all-time' as the Beatles are. :)

these songs were all world-wide, smash hits at the time of this show. at this point they were still riding their initial tidal wave of fame and artistic success, and had already toured america and played the ed sullivan show. great times. keep on rockin

The Beatles hardly qualify as "boy band" even though they had screaming young girls at their appearances. They weren't manufactured by somebody just looking for money. They came together naturally. They played their own instruments, they weren't singing dancers like boy bands. They wrote their own songs. Also, they were innovative, from the beginning to the end, they never stopped being inventive. And they were, more than anything, original! They set trends, they didn't follow them. Also, people who make fun of Ringo are just ignorant and don't know what the hell they're talking about.

Very rare to see I’m Down being performed live. Keep going, you won’t be disappointed.

No matter how many times I listen to their live performances, I am always surprised at how well they get the rhythmic FEEL of each song.

I agree with your critical assessment. I’m so pleased to see someone younger get it. The Beatles made sophisticated pop rock songs. They progressed beyond the primitive early style of rock n roll and changed it forever. They always were able to do the foot stomping tunes like I’m Down, or Helter Skelter or Back in the USSR but they added the social commentary like Eleanor Rigby and took Rock in higher directions than before. They were just as Revolutionary as the first wave of Rock n Roll was. I’m so glad you get the quality of the Beatles! That’s a good reason why they are still listened to 50 years later. And you haven’t heard anything yet! Starting with Help, then Revolver, then Mystery Tour then Pepper and then the White Album. There’s some great music coming up! Watching you react to this is like hearing it new again! Fantastic! 👏🏻

You have a long way to go discovering the genius of the Beatles. I grew up with them and listen every day still.

They played their first performance in America in Feb 1964 on The Ed Sullivan Show (to 73+ million viewers, still the 2nd most watched TV show in history.) A full year before Blackpool. So, your Beatles journey should start a little earlier lol. And their early shit is fantastic. Wayyyyy ahead of it’s time (And btw, they were considered rebels with the long hair and rock n roll.)

It seems that you're listening to them without ever having heard their albums...? Anyway, that makes it interesting to hear these insights. To tell the truth, their voices basically sound the same as they do on the albums. It's just that the instruments are a little bit more intricate and finished, of course. Yes, they rehearsed a lot. They had already been a band for a few years before this point. Wished I had seen them in person but, at 10 years old or so, my mother was quite protective. It was such an exciting time! Thanks. 🌷P.S. Yes, "Yesterday" was entirely Paul's song. Supposedly, he received this song in a dream. He said at first he called the song "Yesterday" "Scrambled Eggs." "Help" was their second movie. "A Hard Day's Night" was better and depicted the beginnings of "Beatlemania" worldwide in 1964. For its time, it was considered quite a clever movie. Worth a watch!

Yesterday came to Paul in a dream. The music was completely formed in his mind. He played it for many people because he thought that it was somebody else’s song, but whatever, but he told him that it wasn’t, he wrote the lyrics and the rest is history. It’s the most covered song in history.

Ringo is one ofvthevbest drummers, ever. He doesnt play long, show off drum solos, but his drumming is actually very complex and his style fitted the group perfectly 😊 great reaction.

Their song HELP was the title song from their film by the same name ,it was covered here in Australia by our legendary singer John Farnham who slowed it down and recorded it with a rock band and a Symphony orchestra it is amazing and John Lennon said in an interview that it was the best version he'd heard from all the covers produced . At one time in the early 60s the BEATLES had 7 songs in the top10 in Australia and had written the other 3 for other artists , if this is the start of your BEATLES journey do it chronologically and you will observe at least 4 differet phases not only in their music but their lifestyle and fashion . Speaking of fashion the clothing industry made a killing copying every thing that they wore and there wasn't many young men in the western countries that didn't wear something influenced by the boys , the girls loved to go out with guys who were just like their favourite BEATLE . I had all the gear from the chelsea boots to the mop top haircut and was devastated when they swapped into their hippie phase .

Hi. My wife and I saw a couple of your videos last night. She's 72 and I'm 69. For what you are showing I was there. Not in person. $5.00 a ticket was too much for my parents to spring for. The Beatles permeated the air during my childhood. You have no idea what it was like waiting for their next single. I, like yourself, zeroed in on John. To this day it is very hard not to ignore him. When I was 10 it was equally as difficult. I remember when I was ten, he wore a black & white pokadot shirt with black pants and jacket on the back cover of Beatles IV, I believe. They were in the studio. Of course , he had on his sun glasses. I found that shirt and pants/jacket when I was in eighth grade. I wore it to school and thought I was soooo cooool! I eventually became a singer/songwriter in L.A. If you could hear my studio stuff, you'd laugh at John's influence. Hey, I was very impressed by your reaction to their music. We were watching as you played their Blackpool set which, by the way, was their standard set at that time, playing it on Ed Sullivan with nowhere near the competence and spirit, and sound quality. George's guitar is out of tune on Act Naturally and I cringe every time I hear it. As matter of fact, Ringo's singing was out of tune as well. He was amazingly in tune at Blackpool.The Blackpool performance of Help just rocks. Perfect! Amazing. Identical to the album with far more drive. I found that quite awhile ago on RU-vid and play it every now and then for a jolt of joy. Anyway, I told my wife "He gets it!!" And you do. I could see it on your face. And because you do, I have some vintage Beatles stuff that I don't need at 69. If there's somewhere I can send it's yours.

They were breaking free from the beginning. What you may not understand is that the music they blasted out starting in 1963 was brand new. I Feel Fine was considered way ahead of its time, and it featured feedback as part of the recording. Their early music sounds 'normal' now because it has been 65 years and virtually all pop music is borrowing from the Beatles' early work on some level or other. I was 10 years old in my bed one night in late November 1963 listening to my clock radio, and suddenly - I Want to Hold Your Hand came on. It was like music from another planet. As for their stage attire - their manager persuaded them to get out of their leather outfits and into matching suits because otherwise they would never have been signed by London record companies, or allowed on British television. They continued to match until they stopped performing, but each year of performing their suits became less traditional and more funky. They were breaking through step by step from the very beginning. They didn't suddenly have a break through!

"Yesterday" is the greatest pop song ever written. It's been covered more than any song in history. Paul is a genius.

Their first record releases were in 1962-63, typically two LPs per year. Their 3rd LP, "A Hard Day's Night," was entirely songs written by them -- but mostly John.

They had already done a US tour, a US mini-tour, had been all over US tv, I had met them in Dallas, TX, been kicked out of school for my Beatle haircut, had first gotten US radio play in late 1963, Beatlemania was a worldwide phenomenon, had released 2 feature movies, conquered every continent... yes, they were in fact "known in America." Most of your commenter are well-intentioned but unaware or just too young to know.

Help! Was from their fifth album so you’ve got four albums and a pile of singles to listen to to be at the start of your Beatles journey. The reason their music kept changing was that they were constantly experimenting rather than just repeating a successful formula like so many bands do. And BTW anyone who downplays Ringo’s drumming is the idiot. One of the greats!

The Beatles influenced music in so many ways even from this earlier period, which I don't think of as early really, it's kind of their between early and middle periods. They were incredibly tight because when they played in Liverpool which is where they are from by the way which is one of the most blue collar places you'll find in that part of the world at that time, at the so-called Cavern which was an underground club and a pretty rough place by all accounts. Having been a part of the punk scene here coming of age in the late 70s and through the 80s and playing in bands myself, I really do imagine it as totally a punk venue. And what was happening sounds so traditional to us musically now, but based on the skiffle beats that also influenced Jimmy Paige of Led Zeppelin for example and many others, they were playing in hardcore venues and then they made the move to Hamburg Germany and I forget how long they were there but at least a year I think if not longer and that's when they picked up Ringo and replaced their original drummer Pete Best. Ringo was actually a hot commodity at the time. But anyway, that experience of playing in Hamburg? They played hours every night then they took speed to stay awake and then crash in the daytime and then go right back to it over and over and over. And they had increasingly big draws and got popular and made a lot of money for the club owner who also leased an upstairs room for them to live in while they were the house band there, but that kind of live playing that is so frequent and intense like that? That's like a crucible that fires you; it bakes whatever you're doing totally into you. You can mind-read your bandmates and you just know how to do this stuff and how to deal with any kind of audience. That's really what made them who they are and so we can't say enough about their really early days, that's what made them great later on. It truly is. Not to mention they are incredibly bright and creative and just broke barriers right and left. They just kept doing whatever they wanted and it was always fascinating.

They were pristine, every time. Early days, late days, pop songs, rock songs, country songs, rap songs, no matter what they played live, they were pristine. Every single time. To me that is the most amazing thing about this band. Or one of them. lol

This is the way to do it. Their manager cleaned them up. Got them suits. Told them to bow after each song. They used to wear leather jackets before. Paul wrote Yesterday but it’s still credited to Lennon/McCartney.

Please don’t compare them to boy bands! These guys paid there dues playing clubs in Germany where sometimes played up to 8 hours a day! They played their own instruments all multiple instruments except Ringo on drums! Also wrote their own songs for the most part after mostly covers done in clubs to begin with!

The Beatles songs were all SO GOOD and every one was different from the last. They had 21 Number #1 hits on the Billboard charts. 34 more got into the Top 10. And 71 got into the Top 40 rotation on the radio! Unheard of now. They created 14 albums while they were still a band. All went Gold. Most went Platinum. Some went Double Platinum and 1 went Diamond! And they did it in only 8 years. They broke up in 1980. But they still sell more than anyone else! Promoters offered them millions and millions to get back together for just one concert! When that didn’t work, they started offering millions for them to get back together for just ONE SONG performance. Nope. John was killed in 1980, just 10 years after they broke up. Fans were devastated. Promoters were devastated because now they could never get back together. Believe me, everyone in the generation who grew up listening to them could sing every lyric to every song…because when a Beatles song was released, they played it ad nauseum on the radio because it was requested by fans every hour! The Beatles would release a single 45 with two songs, one on side A and one on side B. Most groups put their best song on side A of a single and a not-so-great song on side B. Not the Beatles. They would pick their best 2 songs. Both would shoot up the charts to number #1 within weeks of each other. Fans were nuts for them! They released one single record every 3 months and 1 album every year! Most groups would release an album and the single records would also be on the album. So sometimes fans would not buy the single. They would wait for the album to come out. The Beatles did it like that, too, sometimes, but not all the time. Sometimes, the Beatles album would come out and the hit singles were not on the album. The only way you could own a recording was to buy the single. Then the album would be much anticipated because every song would be so awesome and in many cases every album cut would get up into the top 10, too…and multiple album cuts would make it to the top 40 radio rotation! It was insane! Beatles fans had such reverence for the band. Most cities had more than one rock and roll station. We changed stations back and forth all day long, listening to rock and roll in the 60’s. If we weren’t crazy about one song that was playing, we just switch it to the other station. In cars there were push buttons on the radio. But if a Beatles song came on…no one ever switched the station till the song was over! The cars and roads back then were filled with kids, 6-8 kids piled into a car. Everyone singing with the music on the radio in unison. We knew all the bands, all the songs. All of us. We had portable radios…we took to the beach and laying out in the sun at our friends houses, and the boys listened while they were tinkering with their cars and motorcycles. Music was everywhere and everything to that generation. And the Beatles just came out with their “last song,” 60 years to the month when they recorded their first song, Love Me Do! They released a single with the new song, Now and Then, and the other song was a remastered Love Me Do! How fitting. Now and Then is a song John wrote before he was killed…a love letter to his old Beatles songwriting partner, Paul McCartney, and his band mates, George and Ringo. WOW! A tear-jerker, for sure. It was so important that it was a message to Paul. Paul took the blame for breaking up the Beatles. And John was angry with him for awhile. But they did reconcile before he died. Paul left the Beatles to “save” the Beatles fortunes and their place in history. It’s quite another story. But the other Beatles didn’t realize this till much later. In this new song, it appears John is admitting that he knew. Sweet! It has to be cathartic for Paul, this song!

The Beatles were probably the biggest stars on the planet in August of 1965. They broke huge in early 1964 around the world. But they had been giant stars in the UK since early 1963. Their first album went to #1 in the UK in the spring of 1963 and stayed at #1 for 30 weeks. It was only replaced at the top - by their second album which also stayed at the top for another 20 weeks - so they had the top spot on the UK album chart for nearly a full year (50 weeks) right out of the gate. By the time they did this show - they had been world famous for a year and a half. They had released two world wide hit movies "(A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!") before this show took place. Lennon-McCartney had also written songs that went to #1 for other acts by this time. At this point in time - pretty much everything they did... turned to gold.

They were VERY well known in the USA by the time this was broadcast in August of '65. They'd scored many number one songs, had released a half dozen albums or so, their second movie was just coming out, and they were about to return to tour America playing baseball stadiums.

The title song, "Help," was from their second movie. Their first movie was "A Hard Day's Night." Their first appearance on TV in the USA was in February, 1964, on the Ed Sullivan Show, the biggest, most important variety show for any talent to be featured on! If you think the girls screamed a lot in this video, try listening to that one, and also their appearance at Shay Stadium. (Sp.?)

They were at this point consolidating at #1 world-wide. So "opportunity knocks" was obviously tongue-in-cheek.

7:07 The Beatles were absolutely known in the US at this point. Beatlemania kicked off in February 1964. The song Help was the title track from their 2nd movie.

"Help" was released in the UK on 23 Jul 1965. So it was their new record 🙂

Great concert. They were about to release their "Help" album in a few days and this concert appearance was a promo for it. All but two of the concert songs were from the album. Yes, they changed dramatically within a couple of years!

You should really see the Shea Stadium performance. He did break 2 keys on the organ. But he and George were cracking up and John was standing up, really wailing on the organ. The performance on RU-vid is really good. They were able to get their performance and cut down the screaming from the audience - 56,500 people. They couldn't hear themselves. That's one reason they quit touring.

John, so glad you are embarking on your Beatles journey! I grew up with The Beatles, back in the 1960s (I was born October 1963). To say I am a huge fan is a wild understatement! I highly recommend starting with their early stuff and progressing forward, to see the amazing changes they went through, from 63 - 66. In 1967, of course, they got into their Psychedelic days, which demonstrated how progressive they were, which is great. But, I really bonded with their earlier, guitar/drums/vocals-driven music. They started out pretty Pop-forward, with their "Please Please Me" record. But as they got into the second-half of 1963, they really started to blossom as a guitar-oriented ROCK band. Their songs became much more confident, rocking and hot! By 1964, they had literally taken over the world as a Rock band. I highly recommend their "With The Beatles" (the U.S. version was called "Meet The Beatles" and their "A Hard Day's Night" albums, as a good start. And be sure to CRANK the volume because you will definitely hear the raw, rocking chops and energy they brought to those early songs! Keep going!

I can't think of any other song where the chorus leads the singer as is the case in Help...

The people that make fun of them don't have enough musical aptitude to understand why he was actually really good. He was a left-handed drummer and a right-handed world but he made the best of it and it probably actually lended to some of the more experimental stuff that he loved to get into. And I love his singing persona. He's just so sloppy and down to earth and Goofy and he doesn't care. He's funny as hell. After the Beatles he had a string of really super pop hits and they're all just so simple and so catchy and so lovable. They're just like a security blanket you just want to wrap yourself into them. So he was a genius on a certain level, he just comes off as really uncomplicated and straightforward and funny and fun.

When they split in 1970 George was 27. Ringo was the oldest at 30. At 30 or younger each of them could look *back* on being the Beatles and changing pop, folk, rock, metal, alternative, most everything. They could look back on

The Beatles “broke free” after touring in 1965. They had been touring since 1963. They stopped touring live because fans were screaming so loud, and they were playing in stadiums holding 60,000 screaming fans. They could no longer hear themselves play and sing! And they felt very vulnerable with so many people surrounding them. The drugs didn’t really influence them for awhile. They were told they would lose their following and their popularity if they stopped touring. So, they knew, first of all, EVERY SONG had to be outstanding. Most groups up to this point, had a one or two great songs on an Album and the rest were just “filler” songs. The Beatles knew that wouldn’t work if they were not going to tour. Paul started hanging with artists and writers. What they started doing was to create “art” on vinyl records! Starting with Rubber Soul album, followed by Revolver…the evolution between just those two albums was astonishing. Rubber Soul was a big step up from the pop music they had been doing, but Revolver was just amazing. It took them 18 months to record Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. People thought they had broken up. It really, the songs were becoming extremely intricate and they were experimenting more and more with different sounds each album became more and more evolved and artistic. The song Yesterday….Paul woke up one morning with that song in his head. He wrote it in his sleep! Yesterday is in the Guinness Book of World Revords as “the most covered song” of all time…there are over 2200 covers recorded of this song!

Check your information, sweetie. Feb. 7, 1964 the Beatles landed in the U.S. We first heard them in the fall of '63. And yes, the 'grown-ups' hated them, saw 'em as a terrible influence. They were only wrong in that it was a wonderful influence, and they totally changed the world of music. We now and forever will have Beethoven, Bach & Beatles!!

Beatlemania. They were the FIRST. Prim and proper to you but not for the times. There was nothing like them ever before. Long hair. Rock and roll. What?? Parents hated them. They were a bad influence. Changed music and culture forever.

Not because of drugs. Because of freedom. They were allowed to do whatever tey wanted to do. So they did.

"Act Naturally" was a cover of a Buck Owens recording. And every bit the equal of anything coming out of Nashville at the time.

Only way to really appreciate the Beatles is to start at 1962 and go to 1970. The evolution is magical. Although drugs had an influence of course their maturity and talent brought them to their journey's end. They were world stars by 1965 so your comment is incorrect. They were on Ed Sullivan in USA Feb 9 1964. This is a year later.

Wehn they returned from their last stint in Hamburg they were dressed in all leather. They were "punk" before there was "punk". And this is 1965; "The Beatles" hit the US in February, 1964.

the were playing the cavern in 1961. also they played the ed sullivan show in feb of 1964-so they had already changed, and the us did know about them in 1965.
