Brian and I were college sweethearts and played music together in our late teens and twenties, traveling around in a blue glitter flake Dodge van lined with shag carpeting. It was young love and such fun! We lost track of each other for many years but have recently
reconnected musically to make our new album, REACH FOR THE SKY.
Our first single was a song we wrote, Don’t Say Goodbye. It was written in an afternoon when Brian and I were sitting at a small table under a sun umbrella in his backyard. He mentioned he had the bare bones for a song that he wanted help finishing, and he wanted me to sing the lead. As he was demonstrating the melody and phrasing of how he envisioned the song to go, I was interpreting and feeling the song differently. This interplay created the unique back and forth exchange story of two lovers that are parting ways, but deep down really don’t want to. At the end of the song they seem to realize their deep love for each other and playfully come together in unison with
“Don’t Say Goodbye.”
Born to Fly’s second single, I Believe, continues the unfolding story and passion enjoyed in Don’t Say Goodbye from Brian’s POV. Roger’s melodic mandolin lends a romantic, balladeer feel to support Brian’s earnest vocal.
Carol notes, “When we were recording, I noticed Brian was singing, “I Believe” over and over.
It felt like he was saying “I, I, I, me, me, me,” from the man’s point of view. I leaned in and said, “When are you going to ask the woman what she wants?” That’s when Brian leaned in and improvised the lines, “Baby what do you want? Tell me what do you need?” 😳🔥
It was an electric moment (I might have blushed) and still gives me a zing whenever we come to that part in the song. ⚡️⚡️
