I noticed there were slightly less highs right away, and then you showed that roll off and it makes sense. They are likely trying to prevent some nasty aliasing that tends to poke out around there. When I mix amped guitars I roll off between 12k and 15k anyway, so that isn't a concern at all.
@lorenmorgan1931
@lorenmorgan1931 Год назад
There is some that shows up, but to be honest, slightly rolled off and in a mix, you aren't going to notice. The game changer here is that it does what the Kemper was supposed to do, only it does it almost flawlessly. Kemper kills the highs, and compresses the life out of the mids, destroying the dynamics. This feels real and can't say enough good about IK at this point. If they make Amplitube/Tonex into a pedal, it's game over for everyone else.

Great testing! And I like some of your licks. Now it’s even better when using the real cab miced and capture entire rig. I could achieve what I always wanted with kemper or AxeFxIII in only 2hours of training the neural network! That’s amazing for complex rig with fuzz or strange drive pedals. ToneX is a revolution. Crazy it cost so few and that they offered to horrible factory presets 😂 I’m not entirely sure it will replace my kemper. Will buy a new guitar with the money 😂

First thing I thought in the first A/B was that in a mix, it would be impossible for me to notice any difference. Even in solo, it sounds very, very close... I can hear some slight differences, but nothing that jumps out and reveals which is which. That is unreal. Looking forward for the next video and see how the Kemper/QC do!

When you start questioning your own guesses it means the stuff is really good :) We are living in awesome times, when you can copy your valve amp's sound and save on electricity bills! The only thing which I think I heard and it differentiates capture from the real thing is amount of saturation. Real amp sounds a tiny bit more "boosted". Like 1-2 dB of boost before the capture VST can make them undistinguishable. Distorion simply will get as smooth as on the real amp, because of compression

Great video. I think that looking for so small differences without flat studio headphones is a bit pointless. Studio monitors cannot show you that specific level of detail you are looking for. But you have a new happy subscriber! Thank you for the great content.

The problem with sound is the phenomena of "accommodation". Much like smell, our ears will become less sensitive on prolonged exposure. The real amp has more beef in the low and high end. The ToneX sacrifices detail on the low and high frequencies. I am listening just through a pair of crappy headphones and can tell the difference immediately. Having said that, I just ordered a ToneX. You just can't beat the price, weight, and convenience for gigging! This is where this unit shines!

Just Wow!!... yeah Man... i can ear that very little difference in the low/low end, but: FIRST: nothing that anyone can notice in a live or recording situation in a mix SECOND: nothing that can't be fixed with a small grain of eq (IF one want to fix it!) THIRD: i like more the TONEX clarity. I think that low/low is someting coming from the signal chain (maybe the CaptorX). Anyway... if the result is this... again WOW! Hope that most of the captured amps in the community are done with the advanced method!

That extra High end on the real amp could be causing aliasing which can manifest itself in low end noise.

Hi, congratulations on the video, I'm also doing some tests to profile my amp (Laney VC30 combo), but I would like to ask you a question, at minute 3.14 of your video you can see a yellow line but I didn't understand what It's that accessory where it says "amp recording box", can you explain to me what it refers to? It appears when I want to capture stomp and amp together but I don't go ahead because I don't have that accessory which I don't know what it is. Thank you

Really close - I’m curious to hear the shootout vs the rest. Especially considering the price difference. I’d be curious to compare a micd source as opposed to the torpedo, or perhaps using a different load box. Used to be a torpedo user before I switched to st rock and the difference is night and day.

Nice video Mendel. Very interesting comparison, i don't hear any difference. How are you use ToneX without Noise Gate and we can't hear hiss? And what your level input gain on Apollo for Tonex in percent?
@Mendelian
@Mendelian Год назад
I added a noise gate while editing this video in Davinci Resolve, but the noise gate was set very, very low so each squeak would get through. Input lvl was lowest as possible on my interface but I did up the gain on Cubase by 3 db or so to match the real amp.

Hey. Great video thanks! Why you didnt capture the amp with cabinet as well? I always found that real cabinet with the real amp is more difficult to capture than only amp. Cabinet adds movement, sustain and all the nice things.
@Mendelian
@Mendelian Год назад
2 reason: 1. In my experience it’s the opposite, making a capture with cab is easier for an device/plugin. That’s also the reason advanced mode is actually meant for Direct Amp captures. Adding a cab sort of “masks” the in-depth nuances of an real amp. 2. As an mixing mastering engineer flexibility is important to me, I rather have the advanced capture of a direct amp and having the possibility to add an cab later then to have it “baked in”. Having that said there’s nothing wrong with captures + cab, I just prefer only the amp.
@adamicinec
@adamicinec Год назад
@@Mendelian Opposite experience here. Even in Ola Eglund video where he did Tonex capture of the real amp/cab/mic - it is easier to hear the difference because cabinet and the mic also add something special thats not 100% simulatable, so the difference gets bigger imho. When comparing capture and the real amp through the identical IR, it is more difficult to hear the difference. (Of course it is nice to have an option to use different IRs at the mixing stage)
@Fanafranky
@Fanafranky Год назад
I actually really appreciate the no cab approach for flexibility and tbh that was what made me so excited for ToneX. Although I'm kinda bummed to see great captures like this drowned out by presets with cabs shitty cans on ToneNet...

Whan Amplitube first announced ToneX i was highly sceptical it would be any good, but it's proving to be a bit of a game changer. I'd never be able to tell the difference in a mix or not A/B'd solo. I did hear a difference, but very minor. To my ears, ToneX was darker and less sparkly. Held notes sounded just the same, but initial attack, particularly on chugs had more bite to it on the real deal. Have you considered recording a dry track, then doing a phase invert on one of them to reveal where they differ?
@Mendelian

In a blind test, absolutely not possible to hear a difference, but if you concentrate on the low end / low mids (maybe between 120 and 280 Hz) there is something that feels more like an amp, because it is "rounder / fuller". This is the only real difference you could hear, if you know it.

its really really close..if it was a little more rich in harmonics (like adding more gain or a plugin like saturn fabfilter)...and then its perfect in capturing! ...and...some updates with some other things of Tonex!!! My other complain is that Tonex can't sound good when I load in it IRs or use an IR plugin!! what do you use for IR and how?? wow...wait ...I just tested your capture with some IRs loaded in Tonex and its the first capture that doesn't sound thin, it sounds enough properly....I don't get it!!!

I look at it this way.... This thing isnt too expensive, and would be a nice addition to a home studio even just for reamping purposes. But what is really attractive is this..... I can capture all of my Tube Amps, and get an accurate representation..... Then, when writing/recording I will use the plugin to do the majority of the labor on a scratch track. Once the song is complete and ready for the final recording I will then use the real Amp..... Less use on Tubes being that the cost is up! Can also capture Amps that friends have as well.
