Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Nice video! The fifteenth century Valois dukes of Burgundy also adopted Saint Andrew as their patron saint and used a red, saw-toothed saltire as a banner, but it seems to be unclear why they choose Andrew and his saltire. One theory is that Duke John the Fearless choose them to honour his Scottish soldiers led by the Earl of Mar and the Earl of Douglas.

Years ago, I read an English language summary of a study by a Greek scholar showing how the travels of St. Andrew were possible. Very interesting how Andrew could have traveled to Scotland, Russia, India and China on established trade routes. Not necessarily proof of visiting but proof that it was possible and stories of his visits might not all be fables.

Yes. I read this too. It is plausible. Andreas was north of the Black Sea and evangelized and he may came up north to the Baltic Sea. He should have entered a trading ship and landed on scottish shores for a short time. My name is Andreas, the greek original name of the scottish saint. I have a strong inner connection to the flag.

Great wee book to compliment this is (for me anyway) The Celtic Way of Evangelism by George G Hunter. Great reminder of how important the migration of Church, faith, learning and more came from the north and west rather than Canterbury. Just a wee setting the record out and straightening of history like Bruce does.

My great grandfather, JJ Badenoch, helped found the Illinois St. Andrew's Society for the purpose of providing care and housing for the aged Scots people of Chicago. Several years ago, the then-president of the society contacted me and in our conversation he told me that JJ had attended 50 consecutive St. Andrew's Day Dinners. The St. Andrew's home for the aged is still functioning and the Illinois St. Andrew's Society still has an annual banquet.

Interesting tale, as always well told. The sky blue of the saltire prescribed is Pantone 300. Also, while maybe relegated, the Celtic saints weren’t forgotten. It’s said the Monymusk Reliquary residing at the national museum was carried into battle at Bannockburn.

Fascinating history indeed. Just a minor point: The Confederate flag you show is the battle flag of Virginia, not the first flag of the Confederacy. Nor is it the "stars and bars" flag. I have some very dear friends who are not Scottish at all (they’re Hazara Afghan, in fact) but loved the idea of the Highland Games I worked at as a reenactor. They never got a chance to go and have since moved very far away (New Zealand of all places), but this past Saint Andrew’s Day, they sent me a picture of their two little girls holding a Saltire they’d drawn in class; the girls had insisted on sending it to me because they remembered that my family was from Scotland. I nearly burst into tears right there in the gym, it was so sweet. 😭❤️

Stories bind us together in so many ways. My assumption is that very few people today believe that St Andrew himself intervened in a battle in the 9th Century, but that idea has resonated for over a millennium. Love all your videos. I really know nothing about the history of this little country I live in. I have a vast knowledge of Roman and Greek history 😂 Thanks for keeping me in the loop. Always informative, entertaining, and interesting 👍 👏

Nice video, Bruce - I've learnt a helluva lot about Scottish history on this channel! :) Thank you. Personally though, living in Inverness, I'd opt for St. Columba!! Ho, ho!!
