I Bought 2 BROKEN Nintendo 2DS XL's - But Can I Fix Them?! Both of the broken 2DS XL's have power issues that I'm hoping I can fix to get them working again. Sometimes power problems can be really tricky to track down and fix. It's still fun to try though... even if it doesn't always work out.

The only real issue is the reflow is a hit or miss solution. Most times it’s a temporary fix, a reball is a more solid fix but can be spends and time consuming. Been there with lots of Xbox 360 units.

About that right to repair law, one reason it's so important for this to change is because "disposability" of electronics like these 2DS units will keep ending up in landfills contaminating our environment. Yeah you can say recycle them but that takes effort & doesn't always happen.

This is a great video Mr. Porter. Most RU-vid channels only show their success with audience and obviously someone with a lot of experiences like you make things look easy on their videos so enthusiasts might think repairing stuff is easy, fast and always successful which is far from truth and it might lead to losses due to buying broken stuff with the intention of fixing them...

I would consider investing in tools & equipment that allow you to diagnose issues further. A high quality thermal cam and voltage injection could quickly pinpoint "no start" issues like this. Alex at Northridge Fix does this all of the time with great success.

I think there is still more that could be done here. Maybe you did more testing and didn't show it. But I would definitely check the caps around the chips to see if any of them are shorting to ground. If they are, it's probably the chip. You can hook up a power supply at 3.7V to the battery connector and see how many amps it draws. If it passively draws >0.5A there's a short on the main power rail that should be easy enough to track down. Just some ideas.

2ds xl's are very delicate as it seems, sometimes ago I fixed a bunch of dsi xl's I got in a job lot, and I managed to fix almost all of them, and 2 of them had the exact faults as those 2, in my case, it was blown fuses and in one the charging circuit traces where damaged, and another one was liquid damaged, altough I did manage to clean it and it worked (and still does), I am sure you already did that but, have you checked the fuses on those? Sometimes they can cause a charging but no power, other times (with the ds lite it was common) if the board was slightly bent it also produces this issue.

This may be a bit unrelated but I was fixing my 3ds and I broke off the battery connector so I soldered the battery directly to the pads with wires and it wouldn’t work with just the positive and negative terminals attached, the middle one had to be connected as well, and from what I remember it acted the same way these are with the middle terminal disconnected, but this was a while ago so I could be mistaken.

Yes battery tools tend to do the same thing, they want to know the temperature, an easy bypass is to wire a 10k or 4.7k resistor from positive or negative to the temp pin, very handy if you ever want to mod your own batteries in something.
