I Bought 3 Broken Nintendo Switches From eBay - Let's Fix Them! I paid $350 for 2 Switch Lites and 1 Switch. The consoles were pretty rough and someone had obviously tried to fix them already. I tried a number of repairs myself including: replacing the charge port, replacing the charge chip, and reflowing the CPU. Not a very good buy but that's the risk I take buying "for parts" consoles from eBay without knowing if someone has tried to repair it and messed it up even worse.

About This Video: I paid $350 for 2 Switch Lites and 1 Switch from eBay. One of the Switch Lites was already mostly apart when I got it and a lot of the screws were out of the other Switch Lite. Once I started diagnosing and trying to repair them I discovered that at least two of them had bad CPUs and the other one had motherboard issues I couldn't track down but might also have been caused by a bad CPU. Looks like I'm 0 for 3 on this one. Better luck next time.

Yeah, I feel your pain. The prices for broken switch lites on ebay are ridiculous. I am just looking for consoles to poke around with. Anything over $80 is too much yet they keep getting bid up to over $110. I am a novice mimicking my favorite youtubers. Even if I can't get something to work, I get to burn a lot of solder and move micro components around. I bought a lot of 6. Every single one had a broken LCD. Two were missing the plastic connector for the digitizer(not a novice type maneuver(64? pads)). I got one board to work but can't remember if I had to do anything with it. I wrote the ebay seller about my disappointment on the purchase. He said he was just a third party buyer and he had no idea they were in that bad of condition. But, I didn't leave neg feedback because I knew it was As Is. I did manage to get a few real broken ones from other sellers that had not been pawed over buy knowledgeable repair tech. One, the person was trying to replace the left thumbstick and must have used a large screwdriver to unsnap all the ribbon cable connectors. Mangled three connectors. Fortunately, I had spare parts! I successfully transferred pieces to make it work again even tho I had a spare left board. I repair them for my own entertainment on my days off and my 6yo great nephew gets to have one for every day of the week.

Hey man just a little info for you; I do repairs as well and I've experienced and also read from several others that a faulty wifi chip (either whole chip or sometimes just bad solder) can give that problem of being stuck on logo screen and preventing the switch from fully booting. Advice, dont forget that software issues can play a role of the system not booting past boot screen. Disconnected update, sudden loss of power, yada yada can mess with the system on the software side. Before reflowing chips make sure that hard resets are applied so you don't accidentally "overfix" your systems in the future. Good luck

The main thing I like about Steve is, he doesn't give up when repairing game consoles, he tries his best, unlike people who think they're smart, basically, they are showing off. As Steve was unable to repair one of the Switches, he didn't give up and he tried his best to get the 2 other switches working which he did. Also as Steve gets *A LOT* of consoles working as it should, he can get the Switch with the Faulty CPU working too.

It would be interesting to see who the seller is. Who would have three different switches that are all broken beyond repair? Probably someone who tries to fix devices, and knew enough that these were junk so they posted them on fleabay. You pointed it out, they left out important details (lied), but it would be tough to prove they did this on purpose unless they admitted it. Possibly send them leading questions to see if they slip up? Maybe not worth the time? Either way I wouldn't leave a favorable review. Moral of the story: make sure to have a RU-vid channel, and sponsor for the video because you will go broke if you have this kind of luck on your own.

well as a ebay seller, I definitely buy any game consoles i come across at yard sales, thrift stores & Goodwills....most of these are either untested, missing cords or you take some strangers word that they work. I take them home test them or order cords then test them, the ones that either don't work or the cost of the parts necessary for testing is prohibitive.....these units are lotted up and sold "for parts- or repair not working"
@MyRegardsToTheDodo

@@AlGoYoSu I've come across some very good deals that way (a PS4 Pro with a non-working drive -> blown fuses due to update 7.51; an Xbox One X with a corrupted harddrive -> seller didn't know how to do a full update, both very cheap and relatively easy fixes, I've just replaced the two blown fuses with two blobs of solder and did a full update on the Xbox One X) and some very crappy ones (PS4s that were repaired to death or looked like they had been dropped from the Empire State Building...) by buying broken consoles off ebay. I generally don't buy anything that has been fixed and is missing the warranty seals, only if it's very, very cheap. That way if I don't manage to fix the stuff I have parts to fix other things. Hey, I have to keep myself entertained during quarantine. I didn't sell the PS4 Pro with the solder replacements, that one is mine. Also didn't sell the Xbox One X, sold my S instead and made some money.

Could I just give a bit of insight based on my own experience working with these? As far as I know the cpu caps will show as short regardless because they're low impedance, on that switch you may well have had a shorted m92 because obviously that circuit travels to bq24193. On the switch which appeared to charge but never turned on you likely had a bad NAND either because someone tried to hack it or someone used poor quality accessories. If the NAND is the wrong nand module in a switch the data cannot be decrypted and therefore cannot turn on. The same if the chip is bad too and they're married so cannot be replaced unless you clone the old one. One thing you could potentially do as a test is try and read a nand module by converting it into an "SD card" using test points to basically tap into the data lines and then try cloning it onto a new module. This is something I'll be doing very soon as a test so I'll let you know my findings :)

Somewhere on the internet I heard a different method of testing if the cpu/apu/gpu die is dead. It works really well and it saves you time if the die is dead or if it's a bad solder joint. Basically you heat up the chip to around 120-130° C (around 250 -260° F) for a 5-6 minutes (I did that in an oven, exposing only the die itself to the oven(everything else in aluminium foil)), and if that board (graphics card/ whatever you're trying to fix) starts working, then it's definitely not a bad solder joint, and is an issue with the die itself. Solder balls usually start melting at around 220° C (430-ish° F). I think it was Louis Rossmann that said that, not sure aynmore though, all I know is that it works like that for me XD

On the topic of capacitors going bad, I have a Lite that had an SD card problem. Wasn't detecting it, and having an SD card inserted caused a black screen! (backlight only). Found a short on the large filtering capacitor above the SD card slot. Replaced it sort of expecting the short to be coming from elsewhere, but hey presto IT WORKED! So that's one of those rare occasions where it's actually the capacitor that shorted! Not sure how it happened but it originally occurred while downloading games so maybe it just was a bad cap from the factory and wore out? Not sure. But glad it's fixed!

That's pretty smart using a heat camera to see if parts in a good board are hotter or cooler on working or broken boards.

Seen videos recently suggesting a reflow or replacement of the wireless chip can fix the boot freeze issue in some instances.

Hi I’ve been watching your videos for almost a year and decided to take leap and bought a broken switch lite the one I bought has brocket joy sticks. Which is an easier repair but the person thrashed the L buttons and the circuit board it’s missing a component where can I find a replacement for it? Hope you also have a happy new year and happy holidays. Keep up the awesome videos.

That last switch could be diagnosed further. The caps you started testing are low resistance hence your meter shows them as shorted which they're not. You could have done voltage injection to confirm where the short was coming from.

This video is the direct contrast to the other times you have bought "broken" consoles and they work out of the box. Some you win, some you lose.

I use the WiFi shield to protect the joycon connector and then place a penny ontop for good measure. Also I've only had blue screens from a unsoldered gpu. a quickgrip can make a solid connection for testing before a reflow. Reflows with a hotair gun, don't generally work on these CPUs. or atleast you need more heat in the board, before you start attempting to heat the chip directly first. just my 2cents.

When the switch is stuck on the logo you can use install new firmware using Hekate and Daybreak. I have done it twice and worked like a charm.

Steve, probably not a good idea to reflow the CPU in the case. Could've possibly killed the LCD, or something else. And not good nudging the CPU while reflow. In my experience with PS3/X360 it killed my chance of a successful fix.
