I Bought A $300 MYSTERY Ford Ranger And It Will NOT START

A friend of mine posted a 1993 Ford Ranger on FB he'd given up working on. They's replaced a bunch of parts, it ran for a moment and quit, so they parked it. I bought it for $300 thinking it would be fixed in a few minutes and gone the same day. Instead it's been a troubleshooting marathon and we're no closer to it running than when we started.

Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

There is a computer module on the front area of the engine, the pins corrode and break contact and causes this kind of behavior. Check all the connectors for broken pins. Fairly common issue on this generation

Now the muffler bearings make sense. As the exhaust gasses pass through the muffler, the bearings rotate to open/close the baffles in order. If the bearings are bad, and all baffles are closed, there's no escape, no exhaust, and the backpressure kills the engine. Along the same lines, the exhaust timing could be off. The engine timing belt was replaced, or was it? He may have meant the Catalytic Converter belt. Unfortunately, you can't just straight pipe it without replacing the computer. Since they enacted the muffler laws, the computer will detect a massive exhaust leak and shut down the engine. Then again, it's throwing a code. P3006 is the mass exhaust leak. It could be as simple as a bad muffler sensor. I think you're on to something here Alan. But the blinker fluid? That would only affect the rack and pinion steering linkage. It would affect the turning radius, but not the engine. As Leftea said, '97 for Ford, but even then it was only F350 Super Duty. It really helps when you're hauling a house.

Im a mechanic in NZ We had a mazda 323 come into the shop for an exhaust repair I fixed the exhaust and took it for a roadtest around the block and back. It had a 1/4 of a tank and coming back it died . I had to phone work and get towed in on a rope. I got it back to work and it started and ran well. I spent a while on it checking it over. I couldn't see any thing wrong and gave it back to the customer and it died as he left the shop. He come in and ask if we have any gas. I said it has 1/4 of a tank it must have a problem. He said "i ran over a concrete block and bent the tank and it dies at a 1/4 of a tank". So i ended up fixing it. I took the seat and fuel pump out and it had been sitting at a 45* angle in the tank. I grabbed a bit of 2x2 and put it in into the tank and wacked it a few times. Straightened the pump bracket out and refitted and all was well. The silly problems you come across sometimes.

I owned a 94 4 cylinder XLT short bed like this. I bought it in 95 and put about 100,000 more miles on it. Only ever had 2 problems. First problem: the FORD dealer did a tune up on it and when I got it back it ran a bit rough. Long story short, when they did the tune up they only re-connected 4 of the 8 spark plugs...they left off the more visible/accessible plugs. Second problem: at 86,000 miles it needed a new clutch. Not surprisingly, because I used that truck for pizza delivery and really tore it up trying to get pizzas to customers in time. The mid 90s Rangers are truly Ford Tough, and I still see many of them, the Chevy/GMC competition of the same time period? Hardly ever see them.

Next door neighbor junked a 1999 Ford Ranger because they replaced the bad coilpack with a used bad coilpack and gave up on it... said new coilpack was $245... only rust was a couple bubbles on the tailgate... Prob a long shot but you might check the shift linkage down on the driver side of the trans. Truck won't start if it isn't clocked correctly. It has about a half inch of adjustability. I believe you basically need to make sure it is dead center in P,N,D when you select or the truck won't know it is in P and therefore won't start. Accidentally learned about this when i swapped to the upgraded valve body gasket in my 3.0 danger ranger. BtW an underdrive pulley is the most bang for the buck mod on the 3.0. Really helps off the line. Huge difference for under 200 with new matching belt. Tons of info about this online. Also highly recommend the trans valve body gasket upgrade along with half Lucas half ATF in the trans. Like a new trans and shifts buttery smooth with 258k miles of abuse. Go Rangers!

My mother's car had a bad hose, not fuel injected. 76 Lincoln Town Coupe or Ford Ltd. Dad said check the fuel hoses because it would randomly kill the engine. Blow air one way, OK. The other way blocked. I replaced the bad hose and good to go. I have a 1996 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3 liter, manual 5 speed207000 miles and counting. Oil not changed in 10 years. Now has knocking and pinging when climbing hills or freeway speeds. Recently flooded here in Pendleton Oregon. No water inside. In storage with bad battery. Probably rusty brakes. I hope there is no water in the rear differential. Currently driving my 1990 Dodge B250 Van Conversion, with odometer busted at 111665 miles. Happy to see you getting a Ranger on the road. My Ranger had to have it's crankshaft position sensor replaced because of the problem you are working on. Duane

@jason crigger I didn't say it wouldn't run. I said YOU ARE WRONG. It does matter. Diesel fuel and gasoline are two completely different types of fuel. One is to ignite under compression and one is to be ignited by spark. Your an idiot to put diesel in a spark ignition engine. It's literally going to gum everything up and you will have so much carbon it might just seize itself.

My worst diagnosing problem so far was just bad spark plug wires. I found endless comments saying to replace the spark plugs and wires. Everyone pointed out that they were cheap, but mechanics always criticize DIYers for throwing parts at it. I did not replace anything without determining that it was faulty first. I had bad misfires on three cylinders and the spark plugs were oily for those cylinders. The tube seals were also broken on those cylinders, so I replaced the tube seals. and cleaned out the oil the best that I could. I also replaced the distributor because the points were corroded and it was leaking oil. After checking all kinds of other things I swapped over wires from my other Honda and the misfires mostly went away, but somehow those wires had significantly worse resistance than the bad ones, so I replaced both sets. The wires were a little over a year old and had the exact same resistance as the replacements. I have no idea what was wrong with them!

Had a similar issue, had to replace the engine wire harness due to a short somewhere in it. Also check for a vacuum leak on the passenger side of the vehicle, the fuel pump regulator works on vacuum. Check to make sure both ends of the ERG tube is tight. if it is loose it will also cause a vacuum leak.

Under the carpet on the floorboard of the passenger side is a safety switch called an inertia switch. It has a red button on the top. Push that button, if it goes in and clicks your inertia switch was tripped or bad. It stops the fuel pump from running in the event of a collision.
