Follow us on our journey as we develop our raw land into a home and private runway.
In this video I cover the purchase of a Fiat-Allis 8D bulldozer, a trailer to haul it, and the accident we had getting it to our property.
At the end of this video I share some music by Dave Whipple from the RU-vid channel Bushradical. This guy is one of the coolest You Tubers out there. He cares about his content and is willing to share his music free of charge.

Owned and operated an excavating company . Just love the bone head stunts homeowners pull. Getting on a 25,000 pound piece of equipment on a trailer, on the side of a mountain and not having a clue of what they are doing. I am so glad you weren't hurt. The best medicine for this escapade is when you write the repair check.

Thanks, and I totally get what you are saying. As a professional pilot, when I see people post videos about flying and they have no clue how close they got to killing themselves, I feel the same way. Dead is dead, whether it is a massive piece of heavy equipment killing you or a lightweight airplane. Especially Ultralights. Don't worry, though, because I do not plan on fixing that right of way. I will leave that to the pros. I plan to just use this dozer to move a lot of dirt on later land without cliffs. Thanks for your concern.

@dans_Learning_Curve Thanks for Subscribing. Yes, there will be videos on flying. Just not yet. First I have to get the runway smoothed out. Then I can have people fly in for visits. But next I have to build a hanger so they can stay and not worry about their aircraft. Once the hanger is complete, I will buy an airplane. I will probably buy one that I can fly now and a kit that I can start building the aircraft I want. That would be a Murphy Moose. I really like what that aircraft can do. So, flying videos will be be coming really soon, but they will be coming.

Thanks for watching. I already have two more videos uploaded, and they will be published at 9 am Friday the 1st and next Friday the 8th. I learned a lot from this experience. Originally, I thought I would use the dozer for both the right of way and the runway. But I think I will leave the right of way to the pros. It's too steep for me to be learning on. So, I will just do the runway. Thanks for watching. I'm glad you are here to experience this with me.

It is perfectly obvious that you don't haul equipment very often. You never chain anything with tracks on the tracks, you find another spot. If nothing else, put a chain across the back where the protrusion is and boom down the chain toward the back of the trailer and the other toward the front.

You are very lucky and lm glad everything is ok!. I did the same thing loading my bobcat up and was heading out the drive into traffic, i pulled the levers back in reverse and got off the trailer it stopped and jacknifed my pick up truck, luckily no damage. I operated equipment all my life and didnt give it a thought. I bought a different trailer with blocks on the ramps so it won't tip the front up and i still welded adjustable legs on each side!. But i realized one thing after retirement 3 years ago life can be good but when it comes to equipment nothing has changed i still need to think and be safe about what im doing!. Enjoy yourself operating your dozer!.

Thank you for your great comment. I learned a lot from this experience. Even though I will never pull a piece of Heavy Equipment again, I will be pulling stuff like a tractor, lawn mkwers, airplanes, etc. So, I will be doing all the safety things I mentioned in the video like chalking the trailer tires, pulling the trailer break away brakes, and putting the truck in 4X4. On top of that, I will have large blocks to go under the back of the trailer so it can't go down while unloading or loading. I know the ramps you are talking about and wanted to get them or the folding hydrolic dove tail trailers. But then I found a great deal on this trailer for only $10,500. So, I went for it. Imwill be a lot more safe from not on. What doesn't kill me makes me smarter.

No worries, I do think most are coming from a place of concern. I'm fine with negative comments. They don't hurt me because I was raised in the 60s and 70s and we developed thick skins back then. Comments that have been mean just to be mean, I just say "thank you for your comment." It's like the Sothern expression "bless their heart." Hahaha. Plus, all comments help the channel. I leave almost 99.9% of them even though they are ugly because people are entitled to free speech and their opinion. Thank you for your kind words.

Thank you very much. It's nice when someone like yourself recognizes that I put my mistakes in this video not only to show what I learned (after all I learned them without posting this video), but to also teach others to not do this. We don't know what we don't know. As for the weight of the load, I trusted what the seller told me. I know little to noting about these machines, and 16K lbs sounded about right for something this size. As far as the unloading incident, had I not stopped abruptly on the back of the trailer, it wouldn't have lifted up and everything would have been fine. But like you said, I learned a ton from this experience. Thank you for the nice comment. I have gotten mostly negative comments and as you can see, I answer them all and leave them here instead of deleting them. I believe that right or wrong, everyone is entitled to their opinion. That is, after all, the American way. Sure can't do that in North Korea. ;-)

Hahaha. Thanks. Sadly, I don't think you will get to enjoy that feeling again on any of my future videos. I learned my lesson with what all happened in this one. Future videos should be more relaxing. Hahaha

@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
Interesting, as I never showed the final chain job in the video. There was some showen in the video and then later we changed it. If there was a problem with the way we had it, the Trooper would have said something. He looked us over fairly good both when he passed and then when he slowly rolled up on us. He saw the final chain job, which was never shown in the video. Don't always believe everything you see in a RU-vid video. Some RU-vidrs stage stuff just to get views or lots of comments. It helps their algorithms. Thanks for watching my video and your concern.

Glad you were OK. It is an easy lesson you wont forget. I had it happen loading my 110 TLB. I backed off the trailer before the truck got to the woods. Easy lesson for me. I immediately cut a two by four to jam the brakes on. It stays in the truck.😊
@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
For sure we both learned a lesson. Your right, I will never forget it. The main reason it happened is that I hit the brakes on the dozer and with this being my first time driving the dozer, the brakes grabbed a lot more than I thought they would. Because of this, I came to an abrupt stop which killed the engine on the dozer. Had the engine not stalled out once the trailer and truck started rolling, I would have driven forward. Thankfully the trailer stopped and I quickly started the dozer and got off of that crazy ride. I didn't stop until I had the dozer up on the right of way. I will be cutting me some blocks for the back of the trailer and some to put under the wheels.

If you are recently retired, congratulations and welcome to the good life. Operating heavy equipment like bulldozers is very dangerous. Only thing more dangerous than operating heavy equipment is MOVING IT!!! We have operated heavy equipment for twenty years. Dozers. Excavators. Dump trucks. We ALWAYS pay professionals to move our equipment. it's worth every penny. I noticed you used a rather unorthodox way to incorporate your ratchet binders as well. Suggest you get some guidance on the proper method to use them before the next time so you don't find yourself losing a piece of equipment off your trailer. Destroying a recently purchased piece of equipment is something you can recover from. Killing yourself, not so much. I can not caution you enough about learning to operate a bulldozer on any type of incline. From your description and walk-around it appears that you may have a good deal of sloped ground on your property. As such I give you four words of advice: WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT!!! Good luck. Have fun. But most of all, be careful. The other thing about operating heavy equipment is though it is generally very slow moving, it is also TOTALLY UNFORGIVING if you make a foolish mistake and even as slow as it operates, it can injure and even kill you in a split second. Please be careful. You're just entering "the best time of your life" so be sure it doesn't wind up being the shortest time as well. Private runway you say.........?
@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
Thanks for your comment and concern. After this first and last experience, I will never move this dozer again. Thanks for your advice. I was retired for one year, then after I bought this dozer, I got an amazing job offer. So, I jumped on it and will be doing it for a year and a half. I talked about it in my video titled "Why no recent videos?" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mIIkbp51weI.htmlsi=B1t-LVjwqso2Od9o So, things will be slow for a while on the video front. There are some some updates coming in the near future and one of these is going to be a big one if it pans out. So, keep watching to find out more about this. Yes, a private runway for me and my friends to land our airplanes on.

@DannyCreech
@DannyCreech 4 месяца назад
@renatoguatieri6692 you are correct. It wasn't until I got the dozer home and found out by reading the books on it that I learned, the seller lied (probably just because he didn't know) to me and told me it was only 16K. I bought a 25K trailer which can haul 16,700 (originally I thought it could haul 25K). My truck is rated to pull 22,700 lbs. So I thought I was good to go. Now I know the truth and I will never pull this dozer again. Like you said, it needs a much bigger truck and trailer. I know that now.

New sub, found you thru your post on Grass Airstrip. Beautiful property!! I have a Case 1450 - a buddy with a truck/trailer helped me pick it up - seller loaded it - neither of us knew how to operate it and we were both afraid to unload it - had to call another buddy to unload it. So, can relate to your experience. 😂 You're gonna be like a kid with a full size Tonka Toy playing with that beast. Obviously you're aware, respect it, etc. Just a couple tips: Always wear your seat belt. Wear protective eye wear - I've had many "little" branches smack me. If you get freezing weather, make sure your tracks are free of mud and such before it freezes. Check your undercarriage plates and make sure they're there and bolts tightened. Hope you have fun, are safe and I look forward to watching your progress! A little strip is in my near future as well. 🙂

@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
@dans_Learning_Curve That might be my next thing to add. When I get back to the dozer and before I start operating it, there are many maintenance things I want to do with it. There are some gauges that need to be fixed. I will also look into adding a seat belt.
@homesteadcourt7861
@homesteadcourt7861 3 месяца назад
@@RetiredDreamLife please, please add the seatbelt. If you roll her, it'll likely be slow and just be onto her side, you can just hold onto something and ride it out. I've never rolled mine but I know the slow part is what would get me - would have too much time to think about options and wind up in trouble. They're not easy to roll, but... I see you're taking some heat about weight and you're handling it really well. My story above, my buddy pulled my dozer up the mountain, 30 or so miles, using a 1-ton pickup with 1 axle/tires, not a dually. Trailer was similar to yours. We didn't know what the weight was but we took it slow and careful as you did and all was fine. Calculating risk by the minute. After getting it off the trailer, we noticed the plate on the rops said it weighed 32k pounds. For gauges, I've found my trans pressure gauge my most watched gauge after temp. If you don't know where it's at yet, recommend finding the fuel primer pump. It's not intuitive on mine. Nothing like running out of fuel, walking a mile to/from for fuel only to find out you can't find the damn primer pump thingy and have to walk another mile to/from to Google. 😂 As I sit here with 3 feet of snow on the ground, I'm finding your vids inspiring. Hope to see some hangar build vids too. 😀

You sure were a brave man hauling that dozer with what you had and no experience with big heavy loads. I worked for the railway here in Canada and started out small and you worked your way up. For me to even bid a heavy equipment job I had to have two years hauling heavy loads hauling Containers. Then you got tested for two days if you could handle it you got the job. You operated a heavy machine like a fork lift only set up for containers and some of them had 60,000 lbs and up but experience gives you the feel. Thanks for your video and take care learning don't take stupid chances it can kill you.
@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
I wouldn't say I have "No Experience". I have a CDL and have hauled loads a lot heaver than this one. For sure I wasn't being "Brave". When I hauled it, I was under the impression that the load was 16K lbs. My trailer is a 25,000 lbs trailer and can carry 16,700lbs. My truck is capable of hauling 22,700 lbs. This dozer is not a Cat D9 or super "Heavy" dozer. I was well within my capability when hauling it. However, and this is why I put the over heating breaks and transmission in the video, to point out to others, to NOT do what I did. I could have edited that out. After all this video wasn't about how "Heavy" the load was. It was about me buying a bulldozer. I showed my mistakes because I wanted others to understand to NOT do what I did. I believed the seller when he told me it was 16K lbs. It wasn't until days later when I was reading the books that came with this dozer that I found out what it actually weighs and that I was in deed overloaded. You never take "Stupid chances." As stated in this video I calculated out the load and from what I was told, I was well within the load limits of the trailer and truck. If I was doing something stupid the state trooper would have not just checked on me and moved on his way. He would have shut me down. I was on a back country road and only traveled a few miles as the guy I bought it from is not that many miles away. I was driving on these country roads going only about 45 mph. I will say, I did learn a lot from this experience and I hope that most of the lessons I learned came through in the video. Thanks for watching.

Possibly, the dozer weighs 20,500 lbs with fuel and operator. The attached winch weighs less than 3,000 lbs. So, I would guess the load was at 23,500 lbs, and the trailer is rated for 25,000 lbs. So, I don't think I was overloaded. It was for sure right at the max, and my truck did fine pulling it after we got through the mountains. It was another 35 miles to the property, and it did great and road smooth. Thanks for your comment.

Had the same thing happed to myself. Small single axel dump truck hooked to tailer but with a mid sized excavator.. As I started down the ramp , up goes the wheels and it starts freewheeling, I just kept going and when the tracks hit the road the truck went down and the rear tires hit the road and it stopped. . All that happened in about 50 to 75 ft. stretch. Had I not reacted quickly it would have ran into a few new houses. Thank God he gave me quick reactions. Looks like a proper sized dozer for your projects.

Great story. Something I don't think I mentioned in the video of that when I hit the brakes, I killed the engine. I couldn't do anything but freak out. Had I put it in neutral and started it up, maybe I could have gotten off the trailer faster. Nice I'm glad the you didnt get hurt. The surprising thing about accidents is how quickly they happen. I would get some square lumber pieces 6x6x24 inches some smaller 2x8 and 2x6 . Then stack them up at the end of your trailer under both ramps in a cribbing fashion when loading anything heavy. That will support the loading ramps and the end trailer and keep the front level and your truck on the ground. Good Luck with your new endeavor.

Thanks for the advice. Another friend of mine said the same thing. I plan to do exactly that. As I mentioned in the video, I will also put blocks in front and back of the trailer tires. I will put the truck in 4X4, and pull the emergency break on the trailer. I figure all of these things will make loading and unloading of equipment safer. As for the dozer, I will never pull that again. It was way to heavy for my truck with all the mountains in the area. Thanks for your comment.

Well, pilots are familiar with ‘event chains’ and how they lead to accidents. Somewhere through your adventure were opportunities to recognize that events were leading up to an accident. Each phase of operating that machine has it’s own set of limitations, problems, and practices. Get training. Load and unload on level ground. Block wheels on tractor and trailer. Properly adjust and fasten seatbelt. Start machine work tasks on simple tasks on level terrain. Go slow at low power settings. Stop often to assess, self critique and get rest. I’m here to learn, too.

@user-tv5dt3nm9y I for sure can tell you are a pilot. You know too much to not be. However, the average Joe doesn't know about breaking the links of a chain that lead to an accident. I know you know about annual inspections. Let's say after the annual inspection the A&P (someone you trust) signs if off and tells you "You are good to go." You do a through pre-flight inspection because we all know after Mx you always need to check it over really well. You do your run up and things are great. You get airborne and 20 minutes into your flight, you feel a vibration. It's not normal. So you do a precautionary landing at a remote airport without any services. You take off the cowling and look everything over giving it a good pull on everything and it is all tight. Looks good to you. You do another walk around and all the gear parts, flight controls, and all inspection panels are secure. You take off again and for the rest of the 20 minute flight, everything is great. No vibration. When you come into land right in the flair a gust of wind catches you off guard and you over correct. But you get it on the ground with only two bounces. Everything worked out okay and you realized to be more alert to things on landing. What I just described to you was exactly what happened to me but was stated in aviation terms. When I picked up the dozer I was told by the seller who knew this machine I was good to go. I had already done my calculations. The dozer was 16K lbs and my trailer can haul 16,700 lbs. My truck is rated to pull 22,700 lbs. So I was good to go (as far as I knew). After a few minutes into my fairly short drive home on country roads, I got the transmission over heat light. I pulled over immediately to check it out. I knew why it was over heating. The truck was really working hard pulling up not one but two big mountains. So, I did what the manual said and let it cool off. I even asked the State Trooper who knew the road, how far until we reach the top. Funny thing was we were almost at the top. So, once it cooled off back on the road we went. Now we were going down hill and I was keeping it at 45mph and using the trailer brakes and exhaust brake. This long down hill with this heavy load got the brakes hot. So, again, I broke the chain and pulled over this time for about 30 minutes until everything had cooled down. I knew we were done with the mountains and the rest of the ride home which wasn't that far was just light rolling. So, we got back on the road and and took it slow. I never let anyone get in front of me close. If someone jumped in front of me I would back if off so that I had twice the distance I thought I might need to slow down. Never once did I put anyone in danger. At no time did I feel as a logical thinking pilot I was doing anything wrong or dangerous. I was concerned about my truck though. I'm not a fan of things overheating. The engine of course never over heated as it was like 40 degrees outside. The rest of the drive to our property it was totally normal and everything went smoothly. When I was unloading it, had I not stopped abruptly on the back end of the trailer causing the dozer engine to stall out, that accident wouldn't have happened. Can I even call it an accident if nothing was hurt or damaged? A double bounce on landing is that an accident if nothing was damaged to the aircraft and only hurt the pride of the pilot? The only thing hurt by the truck skidding forward was my pride. Since the event (as I will call it), I feel I learned a valuable lesson. Or should I say "Lessons" as there are many things that came from this. I will now apply them going forward. First off, I will never haul this dozer again. Other lessons are to never believe your A&P or in this case the seller of the dozer. I will now on forever find out the weight of something I am going to haul from either the owner's manual or the manufacture before I even go pick it up. I now know my trailer (even though I bought a 25K lbs trailer), it can only haul 16,700 lbs. I now know my truck is rated to pull 22,700 lbs. So, although my trailer can haul 16,700 lbs, because the trailer weights 8,000 lbs, I have to subtract that from the pulling ability of my truck and that makes the max load I can haul with this truck 14,700 lbs. This means for a safety margin I will not haul anything over 12,000 lbs max. I also dropped the transmission oil pan, changed the transmission fluid and filters. The trans fluid didn't even smell burnt. I attribute this to stopping the movement I got the hot light and then fallowing the recommended transmission cool down procedures set forth in the owners manual.

you just learned a lesson most of us have experienced several decades ago. Also when you load that Cat on the trailer again put more of the weight on the trailer tires. Always check the trailer tires air pressure when cold(at home) and inflate to maximum pressure before loading cargo. I'm sure you changed the oil and filters along with the hydraulic filters before you started using it.
@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
Yes, I had learned this long ago as well. This was why I didn't load it and was videoing when the seller loaded it (this is in the video). I wanted to see if the dozer was heavy and lifted up the back of the truck. It didn't so I thought I was good for the unload. Fact is, I was good for it. But as stated in the video, the dozer started rolling too fast and I pushed the brakes. The brakes work a lot better than I thought and the dozer came to an abrupt stop and stalled out the engine. This abrupt jerk was just enough to get us rolling backwards. Had the engine not stalled I would have started rolling again. All I could think about at that moment was "I'm going to die" and not "Get this thing started and get off of it." A human "Oh sh1t" mental lock up. As a flight instructor I have seen this a lot with students. Your brain is going 100mph and you just lock up for a second or two. As for loading this dozer again, that will never happen. This experience scared me straight. I will never haul equipment of this size and weight again. I do plan to buy a tractor and bring it home. However, I will know for a fact that that tractor weighs before going to get it. Anything over 10,000 lbs, I will will let someone else go get it. Oh, and as for the air pressure, these are 17.5" 16 ply tires and I made sure that morning they were all up to full pressure before going to get the dozer. I agree with you on load placement. I didn't want the seller to back that far up on the trailer. I wanted the weight mostly over the tires. I have extra filters and before I begin working with this dozer, I will change all the filters, grease all zerts, and check the air filter. All fluids will be check for quality as well as quantity. I will probably do some checking to find out which gauges or sending units are bad and replace them. I like things working the way they should. Check out the video after this one where I do a walk around of the dozer. I point out the gauges that do not work. There will be a second more in dept video on this dozer where I show things like where all the zerts are located that need grease and many other things. Anyway, I am glad this is behind me and no one and no equipment got hurt. Mostly, I hope that those who watch this video learns from my mistake and never does what I did. This is the ONLY reason I showed the accident in this video. Because, after all, it makes me look bad. I would rather look bad and save someone's life who learns from my mistake. That is why my accident is put out there for others to learn from.

That is one thing I have already learned and that is to keep the tracks at the proper tension so they don't jump off. What you will see in future videos is me operating on flat ground. I will not be the one working on the side of a hill for the exact reason you just stated. Metal tracks on wet leave covered rocks causes a dozer to slide. Just so you know, you need to have a CDL just to pull that trailer down the road empty, let alone over loaded with that dozer.. DOT would have a field day with this one. The fact that your truck pulled is one thing, but the reality is what your brakes were telling you. Totally overloaded and endangering everyone else on the road.
@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
I will respectfully disagree with you on that. It only weighs 8,000lbs empty and is shorter than my 37 foot 15,000lbs 5th wheel I live in. Pulling my langer and heavyer RV doen't require a CDL. Nither does this utility trailer. Not that it matters, but I do have a CDL with hasmat, doubles, triples, and tanker endorsements. As a CDL driver, I know for a fact I do not need a CDL to pull that empty utilitytrailer. I do not believe I was overloaded, and if I was, it wasn't by much. The breaks on the Simi truck I used to drive would smoke going a down big mountain with a normal load (not overloaded). I do not feel I put any lives in "danger." I am an experienced drive with well over a million miles under my belt and get this, in the 44 years of driving, I have never had one single accident, which was my fault. I have been sitting, stopped at red lights, and been hit by another driver. But, I have never hit anyone in 44 years. I hope you can say the same after you have been driving in 44 years. Thanks for your comment.

@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
If you are referring to me taking this dozer on a trailer to a scale, No. Why would I drive that far with this? There was and is no need for me to do that. Where I bought this doser is just a few miles from my house. There was no truck stop or scales along the country roads, which I pulled it on. I would have had to pull this a lot farther into town just to weigh it. That would have been out of my way. Yes, I did say it was overweight. But I have already explained to you that at the time I was pulling it, I did not know this. I thought I was underweight. If I didn't have a couple of mountains to go up, then down, I would not have even thought about it. After those two mountains, the load pulled fine. I was on a one lane each way country road going 45mph. I don't plan to ever pull this dozer again, so I doubt I will ever know the exact weight of it. But if you have some portable scales you want to bring by my place so you can weigh it, I am up for that. Apparently, you are obsessed with finding out the exact weight even though I have told you the owners manual says it weighs 20,700 lbs. I have tried to find out the exact weight of the winch, but the two books I have on it does not say. The only thing I could find was a reference to the equipment to pull it off has to be rated at least to 3,000lbs. This indicate that the weight is probably around 2,000 lbs as the thing which lifts it needs at least a 30% over strength factor. So, my best guess is this dozer as it sits is around 23,000 lbs.

It was more of a down sloping road than a hillside. But I totally get your point. In this case, there wasn't much I could do about it. This skinny one lane road I was on and blocking traffic was the only way back. I didn't want to tear up the road with the ridges on the tracks. Everything would have been fine had I chalked the tires, put the truck in 4X4, pulled the trailer break away brakes, and stacked big wood blocks up under the tail of the trailer to support it from bowing down. I will apply these safety items when I haul my tractor. But for sure, I will NEVER AGAIN haul any heavy equipment. I learned my lesson.

Not fast but I would say if I didn't keep raising it up, it would go from full up to hitting the ground in four minutes. @robertsprafke9376
@robertsprafke9376 4 месяца назад
@@RetiredDreamLife I’m glad you maybe found the float. No the blade should not come down. Next time you run it raise the blade three feet or so than shut it off with the blade up, get off the dozer and listen where the fluid is by passing? Listening to the cylinders and the controls , the spool valve is what I would really listen to with a stethoscope type tool. It could be the valve is sticking so if you hear something play around with it. Those controls are mostly power beyond so the blade should stay up for a long time if the cylinder seals are not to worn. Ether way it’s good because after you get used to the machine you won’t know it had the issue of not staying up, you’re going to be constantly lowering and lifting the blade. Don’t back drag the blade to much, beginners do that and it will really eat the tracks rails and sprockets. Cat has some real good tips on operating dozers to new operators. You're correct, semi trucks have a Jake Brake, that's a valve built into the head for compression braking. When I bought the dozer, the seller told me it weighs 16K lbs. I bought a trailer that could handle 25K lbs. So I thought I was good. A few days after this video, I found out while reading the manual for the dozer that it weighs 20K lbs, and the winch adds about another 4K lbs, so, 24K lbs as it sits. I know the trailer can handle 25k lbs. But is that including the 8K lbs that the trailer weighs or is that the carrying capacity? I will put in a call to the trailer mfg and find out.

@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
Thanks, in a way, I did. The seller, who is a dozer operator, told me the weight. Kind of like when you pick up a load in a big truck and they tell you the weight and then down the road to pull it across the scales and find out what it really weighs. Could be plus or minus 10k lbs. Besides, this was not a for hire haul. This was just me, a private person picking up a machine and bringing it 34 miles back to my property. I wasn't driving it cross-country. If it wasn't for the first 8 miles being mountainous, I would not have had any brake or transmission over heating issues. After we got past the mountains, the rest of the drive to the property was great and easy. The unloading accident was a bonehead mistake on my part. Had I not stopped the dozer on the end of the trailer, nothing would have happened, just like when the seller loaded it onto the trailer (nothing happened). Thankfully, I learned a valuable lesson, and no one was hurt, and no equipment was damaged. Only scared the heck out of me. Haha

@@RetiredDreamLife this is the equivalent of a load being a d11 and then telling you it's fine on a semi.
@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
WHAT?! A D11 is 229,800 lbs. My dozer is 20K lbs. So lets' do some math. A semi can carry/haul about 45,000 lbs putting it's total weight at 80K lbs. This is of course before you have to start pulling permits for being overweight. A D11 would put a standard semi 185K lbs OVER WEIGHT! When I was caring my load, as far as I knew, I was under weight. It wasn't until a few days later that I read the dozer manual and found out I was 4K lbs over what I thought I was at on weight. So, I was over weight by 4K lbs. That percentage of being over does not even come close to the percentage of being overweight on a semi having 185K lbs extra. Get an old semi truck, with air brakes, and manual transmission, put air brakes on the trailer, or get a PROPER trailer with air brakes. I love Dodge Ram trucks, but I wont pull anything over 15,000 lbs with one. Any daully truck, is not made for hauling equipment on mountain roads. Braking systems and driveline and frame, are not up to it. My thoughts on the matter, everyone else is able to have their own, just don't haul that near people. Best wishes from the far North.

Beware, gravity is not your friend, always do the load/unload on level ground.

The Lord was looking out for me for sure. Thankfully. Also, I'm not a drunk, fool, professor, or anything you may be thinking. What I am is a CDL driver who was told by the seller that the weight of the dozer was 16K. My trailer can haul 16,700. My truck has a towing capacity of 22,700. As far as I knew, I was well within speck. However, days later, after this video was made, I was reading the manuals for this dozer, and it turns out this thingnwith the winch onnit is closer to 22,500 lbs. Yeah, so now I know. You can't judge the weight of a load by losing at it. That is why I have to pull across calls and get a weight ticket. Anyway, I shared my mistake on here not because I needed you to tell me I messed up. I let others see my mistake so that they could learn from it. This is the very first piece of heavy equipment I have ever purchased. I honestly didn't think it was that heavy. I believed the seller about the weight because this isn't some D9 dozer. It's just a small to medium size. Lastly, I was pulling this on some interstate cross country. I pulled it a few mi.es on back country roads that have one lane on each side, and the speed limit is only 45mph. Since you are so concerned for my safety, I will share that I will never be hauling this or any other piece of heavy equipment again. A fool doesn't learn, I do. I am 60 years old, I started driving 44 years ago. I have well over a million miles under my belt and never one single accident. Even with crazy drivers out there blaming on their brakes after doing a lane change into my lane and me trying to stop the 80,000 lbs truck I'm driving. I didn't make it to 60 my being dumb. So you are saying that a State Trooper can look at a piece of equipment and know exactly what it's weight is? No one can just look at something and know the weight. When the seller told me it was 16K lbs that sounded about right to me looking at this thing. It's not a Cat D9 which is massive. This is just a medium to small dozer. Unless a person has own one of these or read the manuals, they probably have no idea how much it weighs. There is little information about this model online. If this dozer was 16K lbs as the seller told me it was, then my trailer can haul 16,700 lbs, my truck can pull 22,700 lbs, meaning I was well within the weigh limits. It wasn't until several days later after making this video that I read the owners manual and found out if is 20,700 lbs with fuel and operator. Yes, that put me over weight but I didn't know it at the time. Now that I do know this, I will never pull this dozer ever again. I also learned to not trust anyone when they tell you the weight of the load. I will now find out from the owner's manual or by calling the manufacture. They know the weight. I do plan to buy a tractor in the future and will make sure it is under 10,000lbs before I go to pick it up. I plan to buy a big excavator and I will hire someone to pull that to my place. A person’s knowledge is what impresses me. I believe experance is the best teacher. College (which I reluctantly confess I have six years of) does not train one for a job or skill. It only shows that person was able to stick to something for eight years. Granted that is a good trate. But I would rather have a worker with eight years of experience working for several companies than someone with eight years of college who just graduated. @RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
Yes, the truck is too small to haul a load over 22,700 lbs. Fortunately, when I was pulling this load (at that time and to the best of my knowledge), I was pulling a 16K lbs dozer on top of a 3K lbs trailer for a total of 19k lbs. At that time, I thought I was good and underweight. The dozer does NOT weigh 26k lbs. According to the mfg owner manual, which I didn't read until days after I made this video, it weights 20,700 lbs. So, now I know I was overweight. I just didn't know it at the time I was pulling the load. After I got past the two mountains, it pulled fine. I chalk that up to a very powerful Dodge Ram truck and a solid transmission. Speaking of transmission, I decided to show it some love by replacing the filters and put new fluid in it. The fluid that was in it smelled fine. Since the making of this video, I have pulled my large 18,000 lbs RV through the mounts from WV down to GA and then pulled it over to Indiana. So the Trans is fine, I'm fine, the dozer I'd fine. All turned out well. My video, which I edited and put in my errors, was a warning to others to NOT do this. It was meant to help others because I will never be pulling any heavy equipment again. I would hope that, as an objective viewer, you got this point.

But when I am in a hurry, I don't focus on spelling. Haha I know there will be some spelling guru who has to tell me I did it wrong due to their OCD. I think at 60 years old and six years of college, if I can't spell now, someone correcting me is not going to change me. ;-) Tips, on the other hand, are always encouraged.

I'm doing the same thing buddy. I got a 9 ton excavator and and skitsteer last year and this summer starts the de-brushing and cleaning up of my farm in earnest. Whoohoo !! An ya it's a learning curve and take your time, we have the time what the hell is the rush? The point is to have fun and get something done too. I'd say watch others who know what they are doing like "legdigit18" on yourube and others. I yell at myself every time I get into or out of the equipment "maintain 3 points of contact !! " (it's left over from my firefighting days in Chicago working with adders and getting on and off my hook and ladder- Trk 57 )

Congrats on getting your project going. I will be getting more equipment as well. I will not be moving them, though. Actually, I have watched many of the videos on legdigit18. I am not a subscriber, but it pops up on my feed all the time because I do watch his videos. I am sure once I get started, I will have fun. I hate that I now have a full-time job, which is keeping me from working on the land. Especially in the winter. I love working outside in the winter.

You bought a dozer? Boy, you're sure unclear on how retirement works. My BIL wants to buy a farm when he retires & work before sunup until after sundown. Some retirement. 'Scuse me while I get back to packing our motorhome for our next trip. !

Hahahaha. You are probably correct. I should have never started working as a slave to begin with. Instead, I should have stuck to my many successful businesses I had before I became a homeless man. To me, being retired has a different meaning than most. If you are happier with the term "finically Freedom," then you can use that. :-) I didn't stop working for a dollar to sit in a chair and die. I stopped working for a man so I could pursue the things I wanted to do. I took three months off and flew all over Asia if that is more of your idea of what I should be doing. Hummmm. Maybe I should have made a video about that. Thanks for the video idea.

Are you sure that dozer is 25k lbs, it may be 25,000 kg which is like 55,000 lbs. that may explain why you had so many issues transporting it.
@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
Hahaha. Sorry, no, not Kgs. Hahaha You can go look it up yourself online. The owners manual says it is 20,700 lbs. The reason for the hot brakes and hot transmission was the two mountains I had to pull this heavy load up. That combined with the fact that months later, I learned I was overloaded. I didn't know it at the time though.

Well, a state Trooper pulled up next to me, looked me, and the load over and left. Hight and with (because we angled the blade) was good. The total weight sitting on the trailer was approximately 23,500lbs or less. The trailer is rated for 25,000lbs. Had it not been for 8 miles of mountains right when we started, my transmission and breaks would never have gotten hot. After we got out of the mountains, the rest of the 35 miles were rolling, and the trucked pulled the load well. I learned a lot from this experience and for sure will never pull that dozer again. It's just too heavy for my truck with all these hills and mountains. Thanks for your comment.
@genewilliams7497
@genewilliams7497 4 месяца назад
Well for starters… you were totally overloaded!!!! The dozer weighs at least 20,000lbs and the trailer weighs at least 8,000lbs so that’s 28,000lbs. Your trailer has a GVWR of 25,000lbs and your truck is grossly under sized the move anything like this…. The state trooper should be fired for not stopping you from proceeding any further with your set up…. I say all this to make one point. If you had wrecked and killed someone you would be wearing bright orange of stripes the rest of your life….. bottom line, you don’t know what you don’t know so please be honest with yourself and ask some one with experience how to properly & safely operate and move this dozer or any other equipment that you may have or acquire in the future. On major rule that you need to learn with moving heavy equipment is it’s not really about being able to pull it….. ITS ALL ABOUT BEING ABLE TO STOP IT!!! Very happy for you in your retirement! Enjoy your property and projects and for gods sake use common sense and be safe to the point of being overly cautious 🔥🔥👍👍

@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
You are correct. It wasn't until long after this video that I found out that trailer weights 8,000lbs! I was told the dozer only weighs 16K lbs. I originally thought the 25K lbs rating was how much could be put on the trailer (not including the weight of the trailer). But I now know the dozer is 20K lbs without the 4K winch on the back. The total weight as is was 24K lbs, the trailer is something like 8K lbs, so as I was pulling it, I was overweight as 32K lbs. Again, I didn't know this at the time. I was told the dozer only weighted 16K. This is the first piece of heavy equipment I have ever bought and had no clue about its weight. I was going with what the seller told me. It wasn't until I was reading the manuals later that I saw how much it weighs. It wasn't until later when I needed to know the weight of the trailer and called the trailer mfg, and they told me it weights 8k lbs. I was dumb for doing this and could have destroyed my transmission. As for the driving part and killing someone, I am a professional CDL driver, I know what I am doing behind the wheel. The trailer brakes worked great and I have new brakes on my truck as well as an integrated Jake brake. As a professional driver, I drive differently when I have a load than just normal driving. I am never close enough to the car in front of me that I can't stop. I was on small single land each way road for most of the way, and I know that road really well. Accidents can always happen, but I am a very safe driver. Also, no, I will never do this again. I now know what I didn't before.

Wow, you don't pull a Dozer with a Pickup especially a Dodge. This guy was luck he didn't have to go over any Weigh Scales. Never saw anything so dumb!!
@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 4 месяца назад
LOL, I can't say I wasn't totally lucky. I think a bit of intelligence went a LONG way with me hauling this. This Dodge is capable of pulling 22,700 lbs. This dozer was 16k lbs and the trailer around 3K lbs. So, I was well within the limits. The two mountains I had to go over made the truck hot and the brakes hot going down the hill because I kept it at 45 mph. It was a short drive (few miles) from the sellers house to mine. No scales or truck stops along these country roads. After the two mountains the trans never over heated and the load pulled just fine. If you "Never saw anything so dumb" then I am going to have to ask you to watch more RU-vid. There are people everyday jumping out of airplanes with parachutes on their backs "Just for fun". hahaha So, lets look at what I did, I got my dozer home, no one got hurt, my truck didn't get hurt, and those who watched my video might have learned what NOT to do. I am the one who edited this video and I am the one who put all of the mistakes in the video. Why would I do that? Just so I could get negative comments from guys like you? No, as stated in my video I talked about what I learned from this experience and I would hope that no one else does this. I would not call what I did as "Dumb". What I did was based on what I was told by the seller. Now that I know the truth, I will NEVER be hauling this dozer again and I will never trust a seller who tells me what the weight of some equipment is. Soon, I will be buying a tractor. When I do, I will call the dealership and asking them to email me the statement on how much it weights. I will probably also do a Google search for the Operator's manual to see for myself what that thing weighs. Hopefully you also learned something from my comment here.

wouldn't be cheaper to pay to have it move?
@RetiredDreamLife
@RetiredDreamLife 3 месяца назад
Cheaper? To pay someone to move it ($200 for a 30-mile transport) or it cost me $20 in diesel fuel to go get it. I was going to buy the trailer anyway as I plan to buy many more things for the farm. So, the trailer would have been purchased anyway. Nothing was hurt or damaged in this video. Trans got hot and brakes got hot. I learned several life lessons, which is invaluable. I shared my life lessons in this video (I didn't have to as I am the one editing it) so that others could learn. I hope they did.

@tombeck2792 I believe I am lucky Tom. Maybe even blessed. I personally feel that God was watching out for me when I was unloading the dozer. That event scared the you know what out of me. I will for sure be a lot more careful in the future. I will also never pull that dozer or anything even close to its weight ever again. Right now, I pull a 16,000 lbs 5th wheel RV that my wife and I live in, and that is about all the weight I am willing to pull. Thanks for your caring.
