I'm becoming addicted to these High Peak videos and I'm so pleased to see there are such honest dealers around. Most of the dealers I've known would never have been so decent as to replace the cambelt. Much easier to tick a box on the service records and 'who would ever know?' Well done, I'd buy a car from you if I needed one.

Probably why Mat has not only remained in business, but prospered. I'm sure his reputation is his greatest asset, after all, his business sense is questionable when he continues to spend out on lost causes!

What a shame someone has left it get so bad. The FL2s are fantastic motors, I've had two great ones. Glad you mentioned the key repair; I'm picking up a 'new' car next week and it needs a replacement shell so I've now got in touch with the guys at KeyFax. And £60k to use Autotrader per year??? Wow, I wouldn't have guessed it to be so high as that!! Loved the euphemism Matt but doesn't conjure up the nicest of images of you sat at your desk in your office! Lol

Seriously, are there any other car dealers out there like you Matt? Great video, the more you got irritated in the first half the more I smiled - your integrity is a shining example to other dealers who are clearly not like you! They can learn a lot from your approach and ethics.

I'd say that was worth it. Seems like a good all around motor for £5400. Plus, it doesn't have tons of gadgets and gizmos to go wrong, seems like a base model.
@jdmsnowmonkey7913
@jdmsnowmonkey7913 Год назад
I remember when I was a kid, my parents bought a new base spec Freelander 2 in 2008 on a typical 3 year PCP deal. In those 3 years the power steering pump went and the manual gearbox began to pop out of reverse, eventually refusing to go into reverse altogether. They've now got a 2017 Disco Sport and, credit where it's due, that car's never given them any trouble in 5 years and the fit and finish of that is night and day compared to the Freelander 2. My Mum still loved the Freelander 2, though, so it was doing something right.

I can already tell you that smell will come back and the nicotine stains will also come back through the headlining when the weather gets colder Headlining needs to be replaced and underneath it cleaned as the nicotine perments through it onto the metal. I work in detailing and we get this a lot when people have brought cars and then 3 months down the line it stinks and the roof had turned yellow

Those 2.2D are bullet proof. There's 2 type. One with a chain that doesn't need changing until 250k. The newer ones have belts. Cost £270 to change. However the engine is solid. Is basically a old transit engine

At a minimum you have a well sorted bit of inventory to display, demonstrating your commitment to offering quality automobiles to potential buyers. While not likely to give you a solid monetary profit, it will pay dividends in good will to at least some potential customers.

10:10 Matt, I always tell the same to my parents with their cars, well I used to a lot of times until I got my own car now I look after mine with regular services, parts replacing, fluids etc. They only see the financial side of things like impacts and such but ignore the fact that their cars are road hazards that are dangerous to even get in and drive, not to mention they are always dirty and have stains all the time. The worst thing is me, as a son, I can't do anything I keep reminding them but they wont listen 😭😭

It's been a good save for this Freelander 2, especially considering the vile state it was when you first got it. Always think it's sad when a car ends up in that sort of state, especially as it's pretty low mileage too. Shouldn't be any reason why whoever buys it can't get another 100k trouble free miles out of it now with some TLC and regular maintenance.
@djwarren5081

@Brian-om2hh
@Brian-om2hh Год назад
@@djwarren5081 Agreed. You do need to pick your vehicles carefully if you are going to do this sort of thing. For example, the effort and new parts would have been wasted, had it been a Focus of similar age. The Freelander, even at this age, still has a whiff of cred......
@rb9580
@rb9580 Год назад
Absolutely! But regular maintenance will need to include at least one more diff recon in that period, several sets of brake discs and these rear wheel bearings will need replacing sooner or later. My FL2 is now at 200k miles, so I've been down this road! 🙂

Just sold my Freelander 2, with em, FULL service history 😂. Little fyi for you. If (usually) the boot release switch is broken, you can open the boot by pressing the lock and unlock buttons on the dash together at the same time, push both and hold and it will open the boot. Also, and this isn’t a plug, there is a company called Bell Engineering that specialises in Land Rover. They sell reconditioned diffs for the FL2 and so long as you send them back your old one, you get a discounted price
@jimhutton4352
@jimhutton4352 Год назад
I had a freelander, it will go down in our families history as the worse car we’ve ever owned. Quite literally a different fault appeared every single time we used it. They’re like a very cheap Chinese copy of a Tonka toy, they look the part but they aren’t fit for purpose. I fixed and fixed and fixed it for approximately 18 months until enough was enough when I sold it for a massive lose, just wanting to wash my hands of it. When the buyer came to see it, I literally threw them the keys, said ‘it’s a bag of sh*t’ and closed the door on them, this high pressure sales tactic obviously worked because I never saw that bag of nails again.

Change brake fluid, change airco gas, change filters and oil and repair stuff that otherwise ends up on 'the list of horror', with the invitation to 'massively overspend'. Really can't see the point of owning a car and not looking after it. You saved this one Matt, it was doomed. Love this channel more and more. Keep it up!

The Freelander 2 that everyone really wants is the Metropolis (The last edition), fully loaded including an 18 speaker Meridian speaker system, dual sunroof, heated leather seats and steering wheel, dvd player, the list goes on. Shame that they do suffer from reliability issues including ours needing a full spinal rewiring by LR HQ that took 4 months to complete and one of the rear doors failing to open from the outside due to a dodgy rear handle.

You did spend a lot of money, but it's now a beautiful car. I have an LR2 from the same year, and with careful maintenance, it's going great. It has a Volvo engine which the mechanic says is a great engine, and should last 400K with proper maintenance. Does anyone know about the 2008 Discovery. I think it's the UK branding for the LR2, and if so, it probably has the Volvo engine, but I may be wrong.

Hi Matt. Totally agree with everyone's comments on here. Really impressive, helpful, well produced and entertaining videos. Despite the Freelander 2 being a design that is over 15 years old, I really like it, and have always had a soft spot for them and would love to have one.I am coming back to ownership after having (get this) a Jaguar Ipace for the last 2 years on lease. So why I hear you ask would I want to go back in time for a vehicle that potentially is going to kick me occasionally, where it hurts with issues? The answer is, that I am through with leasing and need a good workhorse that I'm not worried about every time I park it up in a supermarket. I'm looking to maybe get a late 2013 or 2014 HSE model. There seem to be loads on MarketPlace and Autotrader. Do I need to worry about high mileage ones or stick to something low mileage. My budget will be about 10k in the new year. Thanks . Jon

Another excellent video, entertaining and informative. You didn't mention the steering wheel - I see it still has the one that looks like it's been chewed by a dog. Totally agree with you re smoking. I don't smoke but even if I did I would never smoke in a car. It's just too small a space and would quickly discolour and stink, as this car has done.

That situation with the keys is more common. People know they get more money for 2 keys so buy a cheap lookalike from a scrapped car. Assume people will only test one out or assume the battery is flat in the second one. Indeed looks like I might be victim of such as scam. I sent the spare key off to get battery replaced (how ridiculous is the process for this in a second gen mini! Needs to be soldered to the motherboard). Got it back and still does nothing whatsoever. Odd thing is though the key bit that fits inside the fob clearly has the same lock so hopefully just needs reprogramming

Don't lose too much sleep about the Auto Trader ratings. I spend hours browsing Auto Trader, but now I've been watching your videos for a couple of years I'd always look for something that's priced "too high" as it would suggest the dealer has spent some money putting it right in the same way you often do.

I don't get cheap tyres on what is supposed to be a nice car. Just skip a few trips to the pub and get some mid range Dunlops or something .

Great convolessing video Matt! Got to take the rough with smooth unfortunately on this one. Can't believe it's cost you £3700 to rectify the mistreated freelander. Who actually buys them for you?.

Maybe you could do a t-shirt with "I massively overspent" on it? I think it'd sell well.

Still got the ratty steering wheel - asking a premium price with that wheel is a bit optimistic... Good video, as ever...

your grumpy old man ranty humor is so fun to watch and laugh with. also, OUCH, that 5,2k hurt deep. that will be a perfect car for whoever buys it, but from a business perspective is not a good day at work...
