Currently running a 2005 S60 D5 as a daily beater, 200k miles. These things are bullet proof. Your XC70 deserves to be saved. Well done. Where would you find a car for £2.5k this good and reliable?
@karlkadakas4093
@karlkadakas4093 Год назад
I wouldn't say bulletproof considering the CEM failure and the serpentine belt colliding with the timing belt. Also considering the 4wd angle gear issue on the xc models, but they do a lot of miles when properly serviced.

Own a 53 plate with the same engine and mileage. Absolutely fantastic car, I mean there's a fair few trivial things wrong with it but bar getting the front brakes replaced in full I've done 15,000 miles with absolutely no issues. For a car I didn't even pay anything for it's certainly a good innings People always say to me "why don't you get something newer this is a shed". I mean yeah, but this is a shed that will still average 40 to the gallon combined and probably outlive me, let alone something new and full of tech designed to fail

Old Volvos are great cars. My aunt has one and it is so comfortable for such an old car. I'm from the US, specifically the northeast region, and Volvos are everywhere. We get a lot of snow and have a lot of money everywhere, so they are really popular. The quality of the cabin ride and the seats make up the extra cost to repair a European car here in the states

Those old barge like Volvo's were legendary for running until the end of time. 200k almost seems like it's just the running in period for them. Knew a couple of guys back in late 90s who were still running early 80s Volvo's with similar miles on them to this one. "Why, when this one works just fine?" would be their answer when asked why not running a newer car. Nice to keep another on the road though, so all good in the world.

I don't think people 'lose interest' in taking their car to the main dealer for a service, it just becomes an economic situation. As the car ages and loses value, paying main dealer prices becomes unrealistic. I take my car to an independent garage for this very reason. A £200 service with them would probably cost £500 at the main dealer.

Such appealing cars… period. They’re cars of a generation where engineering counted over profit and cost. The styling has aged so well on the P2 cars - mine has a personal plate and people often think it’s a decade younger than it is. These were the last car actually designed exclusively by Volvo before Ford took over in 1998. So they really are the last bastion of solid cars and that is why it’s done 300k. Yes the costs are high for parts but spending money on a decent car actually makes sense because it will do another 100k with ease. If it was a newer car there would be a host of cheaply made parts to fail and that’s before the ridiculous amounts of electronics on cars now. They did a test in Sweden of a 2004 V70 against new EVs to prove how distracting touchscreens and controls are and the actual increase in danger as they are far more distracting. The tests included setting the cabin temp, selecting a radio station, putting on the heated seats etc. the Volvo wiped the floor with them all and whats more it could all be done without taking your eyes off the road. These P2s have the technology you need for comfort yet none of the ridiculous tech you don’t which is stuffed into cars now, less is definitely more! My current V70 is my 10th Volvo - I’ve owned 26 cars since I passed my test and some cool cars but Volvos are my favourite and the brand that doesn’t shout for all to see - it’s quality, quietly confident and different.

Great car. I have an S60 d5 of similar vintage and I love it. Smooth, powerful, economical and very reliable. Classless looks, wonderful seats, superb stereo, etc etc. I’ll probably keep mine forever as it’s just perfect for my work commute. Regarding the alarm service warning message, it’s the internal battery which has corroded in the alarm unit. It’s a faff to change so need to replace the whole unit and pretty expensive so I’ve just removed the siren fuse otherwise it will keep on going off and flatten your battery and annoy the neighbours. However, the alarm will still go off if you lock it with the remote and will still flash the indicators, so I just lock it with the key which doesn’t activate the alarm. Job done.

I bought one of these simply to move rubbish to the local tip when I moved home. It replaced a V70 I’d bought for £650 off of Facebook Marketplace (and this car is reviewed on my own channel) I really pushed the boat out spending £2,850 on the 2006 XC70. It had 138,000 miles and two owners - the last, a lady in Highgate who I can just image taking her daughters to Ballet practice in lol. It had masses spent on it, and was perfect. I’ve since spent out on a new Intercooler, AC Condenser, Discs and Pads, Handbrake shoes, and cable, an alternator and fixing the headlight washers - like you this was over £2,000 in costs but now with 163,000 on the clock the engine is strong, and everything else is fine and working too. Yes, it does not handle that well, but it also is not that bad and surprises people especially with its high torque getting going from a stand. I think it’s better than an XC90 and quicker too and cheaper to tax but has the same AWD system. The thing is it is amazing to do long distances in and I’ve got a soft spot for it now. These old Volvo’s don’t rust, and seem to just keep on going so long as you look after them and keep the oil changes they re-resent reliable and cost effective supremely comfy driving.

I drove a lot of this shape of V70 (and S80) when they were new and always loved them. The D5's not exactly refined but it's a bulletproof old horse and great for towing with. I'd seriously consider getting one - preferably with a slush box. Great video - and hope you do that road trip!

XC70 D5 Manual is the one to have. Autos are way more common and come with their issues which are well documented. As long as the Haldex system is working (not always obvious until you get stuck) or the angle gear sleeve has failed and eaten the teeth on the output shaft! All are repairable and make for a very comfortable very capable and very practical estate. I run one myself and I’m currently in the process of getting it fixed up.

A real credit to the previous owner, looks stunning after a bit of a tidy up. The Ford Ranger had a D5 3.2 Turbo here in NZ, beautiful exhaust note, sounded very meaty. Great solid wagon before the days of SUV's, should serve you well Matt. Look forward to the winter alpine safari report. The bike rack thing could do with a bit of matt black paint just to finish the job, IMHO.

Nice. Really nice how it turned out. I have owned several of them and love the cushy ride, comfy seats and space in the trunk. So much homelike for me. :D There was couple of engine options for P2 XC70. Firstly when it was introduced in this platform it was called V70XC since early ones had visco coupling for AWD system. And they came with 2,4T petrol engine. Later in 2003 they were renamed XC70 and there was choices of 2.5T or D5 first gen version that made 163 HP. This is engine in your car. They are indestructible and run many many miles if serviced. And most economical as well. You can easily average 6-7 liters per 100 km or whatever it translates in mpgs. ;) Later in MY 2006 they introduced second generation D5 engine with 185 HP. They are very comfy car to drive. Visco couplings were not best to say at least in those. When Haldex was introduced things was better. Apart from that on high mileage sleeve for angle gear worn out. Yours is very nicely equipped. Like memory seats, in luggage you have grocery bag holder and it has HU850 audio system. That was called Premium Sound. So you have Dolby Pro logic sound system with 200W amplifier. And it sounds good in my opinion. Pity they did not stamped the services. Alarm service is because of the leaked battery inside the alarm module. so either ignore it or replace it or you can programm car not to be equipped with alarm. When it comes to suspension your car is equipped with self leveling system or so called Nivomat shock absorbers in rear so most likely they have never been replaced or have been replaced for the normal shocks and springs. Anyhow enjoy your XC70.

What a machine. We love our Volvo. We paid £2000 for a '56 XC90 and then spent another £2500 having loads of work done. I also put a set of Michelin CCs on ours for £130 a corner. I have spent far too much money on cars over the years but I weirdly think sometimes they deserve it.

One of my favourite videos of all time. I love your style dude. Class. I guess it might change slightly with a film crew when you start hitting the millions of subscribers. Maybe. I started working for the BCA, I'm sure you know them, just for the love of driving cars. Not picking up and delivering, just shunting them around in the compound. Your channel inspired me to do this and I love every second of it. Often I get in jukes and picassos and every time I do I think of your wit. Then you get in a nice abandoned old SL or Xj that lost love and think... Why

I don't think you were wrong to put good tyres on a car you were considering keeping. I've just put two CrossClimates on our 2006 Mondeo. I took it to Denmark last year and the only problem I had was getting breakdown cover on a 16 year old car!

Love these things! My sister had a 2006 she bought (petrol) with 160k miles for $4200 about 6 years ago. Drove it to 285k miles and sold it for $2500. The only serious service was timing belt but otherwise normal wear and tear maintenance. One of my favorite cars and yes, they have an air of class.

It's a great car and at a push you would just get your money back....but I think you definitely wanted to keep it after the first few minutes on your test drive. Sometimes a car feels right to own. The big miles just adds a bit of character to a car like that...and it wears it well. I'm guessing your Pyrenees bound, then Spain.
