I Bought A Fake Greeny ... How Bad Or Good Is It? Kirk Hammett Might Actually Like This Thing!

In this video we take an up close and in depth look at a Chibson Les Paul Greeny I purchased on line for just over $300. I was curious how good or bad this thing actually would be. I think the results will surprise you. I not only film the guitar in detail but provide a lengthy tone demonstration showcasing different tones and settings. I will never (and never would) opt to purchase the 20K version of this guitar, so in a way I feel justified in purchasing this guitar since the originals are so far out of reach for most of us (All of us LOL). So this was really just a fun experiment. Shortly I will do a pickup upgrade to some custom TNTones pickups being sent my way. They will be wound like Green Pickups with the out of phase option with the neck pickup in the middle toggle position. I also plan on upgrading the volume and tone pots along with the 3 way toggle switch. I hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe!

A few years back I bought a Jimmy Page model off AliExpress. After replacing all the hardware, levelling and dressing the frets, I had a great playing and sounding guitar that didn’t break the bank. The quality looks like it’s improved.

Definitely. Coincidentally ever since the Epiphone factory moved its production to China, that it’s seemed like the Chibson’s have really stepped up in quality. I’m not one for spreading rumors but the quality jump since the company moved to China, the Chibsons are noticeably different. Seems like today they actually use real maple caps with thin veneers overs the top, real mahogany neck and on some standard and most custom models, you actually have a chance you might find one with an actual ebony board. Also recently found out they do indeed use real mother of pearl inlays, just not near as nice as Gibson’s. But still that’s a lot in a guitar for the money.

I did the exact same thing! Only I did pay an extra $300 for a “ real” flame maple top and another $100 for it to be a 1 piece mahogany body! Pretty much after all the hardware and real PAFs I put into it , yeah! I could’ve just bought a real les Paul lol. But man this guitar is the 2nd best guitar I have ! My PRS CE custom being the best, but it was worth it .

I work for a furniture store years ago when I was in my early twenties where they manufactured furniture and a lot of it had to look like antique furniture. so we had to smack everything up with a big Ring full of keys and different ways of dinging the surface to make it look like it's old and then painting it to look like a real antique and you couldn't tell the difference, but they were obviously less expensive than the real antiques. It was a very interesting job and I learned a lot they had some really cool stuff to repair broken furniture and you couldn't tell where the thing was ever broken I was good at that stuff😎

Marty, nice Review,,for under $ 610.00 I bought a Telecaster, Stratocaster, Les Paul,, Gibson style hollowbody, & a 6 string bass, all China made, each month I expected to get ripped off, to my amazement they all proved to be very well built, usual same woods, electronics and hardware was amazingly high quality. Grabbed them cheaper early this year now the prizes are climbing. So I had a feeling the 90.$ Tele, the $150 Les Paul were going to increase in price, all sellers did, Thanks for your guitar tips brother. A guitar shop I used to hang out at had a guitar someone had bought in person in the orient. It was a GIvson. The guy who bought it was friends with the shop owner and gave it to him. He had to do a lot of work to make it playable. It was cool. Imagine something like a Florentine cut Brydland but with no pickups or pots. It was super light, felt like it was made of paper.

If a feller was handy he could build a wood frame around that foam packaging and skin it with thin plywood and case material, use the already supplied guitar shape on the inside and glue some type of fabric to it, screw handles locks and protective corners to it and you have a nice custom case for your Geeeeeiinah guitar!

I am not a guitar builder but I would guess they price is low due to the hardware, cheap electronics, multiple piece mahogany like/relative body, less good quality (possibly soft instead of hard) maple with veneer, cheaper workforce, probably 0 or very minimal marketing expenses etc

It looks and sounds great! I bought two Chibsons (LP and ES-345) and a Chickenbacker 325 within the last two years and with minimal setup time by myself, they sound and look great. And as several commenters have said, why take the chance at a gig of having your "legit" guitars stolen or puked on? As long as you don't sell them as OEM guitars I don't see a problem with it at all. Plus, replacement parts sales for electronics and hardware on these copies drives a lot of $$$ back into the pockets of the companies we "cheated" on.

Well Gibson has kind of got me backed into corner,as much as quality has improved in past few years the price has gotten just crazy,im a normal working guy and if i spent 3 to 5 grand on a les paul, im certainly not going to gigg with it or beat it up,so i can get copy for next to nothing, upgrade it and have a decent player grade guitar, now i would never try to sell one as a Gibson, most guitar people could tell what it is as soon as they glance at a few things and you can always just order one with no brand name, the moral of the story is Gibson needs to find some soultion other that some guys getting rich off of the Gibson name,i love Gibsons, there history there innovation in guitar building, but 20 for a guitar is absolutely insane for the majority of working people who just dont have that kind of money, rant over.

i bought one of these also. I had to adjust the truss rod as it would not play around the 7 fret.. got it dialed in. I also bought the real deal for 3100 bucks.. I have to say, I like the Chibson better.. there are so many issues with the real deal it's unreal.. I had to sand the neck to a reasonable size. It had bulbous sides and a lump under the wood near the neck/body connection. The nut sucks and sticks, the strings plink out. One knob was broken when it got here.. I almost returned it. I'm still working on it. Personally it's really hard to tell the dif in pickup sound.. my Chibson also has the dime sized Pots.. will put new electronics in it. Can't wait to see how you upgrade yours. This is not my first Chibson.. I have many, one already upgraded and that one sounds really different from my others.. so I was surprised that this Greeny sounded so good comparatively speaking. Have fun.

I think they make good copies of Greenies, what I do is to flip the magnet180% in Neck pickup, so that in the middle position it has an out phase - a real greenie tone. And one more important detail, I take out the metal bushings on the bridge, and place the screws that hold the bridge directly in the wood, this has a favorable effect on the transmission of resonance, like with old LPs. I notice that the wiring is typical Chinese-serial, the capacitors seem to be soldered to the pin of the ton pot and the other end to ground. It is better when one end of the capacitor goes from one of the pins of the volume pot (vintage/modern), and the other to one of the pins of the tone pot, certainly one of the other two pins of the tone pot is grounded. Anyway, it looks and sounds good.

After all that replacing you are getting into the higher quality Epiphone bracket but would anyone know, i doubt it, if it looks pretty decent and it plays with the minimum amount of effort to set it up play it. All parts can be replaced as and when it suits or when its affordable, In my opinion these guitars are aimed mostly to the people who would like a Gibson Les Paul but cannot afford the stupidly high prices that they ask. who wants to pay $20,000 for a guitar that probably would only be put into storage some where. I have a 2002 Les Paul that i bought new and a cheap "Vintage make" V99 that i bought for a stupidly low price in a auction both play very similar and i would not replace anything. Both have faults but the £1600 GBP that i paid for the 2002 LP then is not justified now. I know people in the US will be saying that you should buy American made but if they cannot make something more affordable then go elsewhere, buy something that you can afford and play with the possibility that one day you can buy your dream guitar and these seem to fit the bill.

Very Cool, Thankyou. Stunning Guitar, Looks and Sounds amazing. I have tried ordering a couple of guitars from China to Australia, but for some reason our Customs has canned the deal. Got money back but still disappointing. I suppose it has something to do with 'Counterfeit' as I have ordered Rickenbacker copies. Would love one of these, but have just ordered from an Australian Company 'Artist Guitars' a LP 'Apricot Burst' which is Identical to the Slash "Apetite Burst" LP so will be my 'Greeny' Guitar too, lol, With Hard Case $400- so a good price for Australian Prices, and Artist Guitars make Quality Guitars with awesome finishes and amazing Playability. They are available now in USA market, apparently and well worth checking out if into quality 'Budget' Guitars. Cheers

I’m in The U.K. and have the Artist LP59, great guitar with amazing tones from their “Bullbucker” pickups which I believe are based on the Seymour Duncan JB Jazz set! Although ok, the bridge and locking tuners could benefit from being upgraded and I plan to when I have the time. So far I have modified the headstock to look more like the Gibson “open book”, put on a more authentic looking trussrod cover, and added strap locks and a pick guard as I personally think Les! Pauls look naked without one

The pickups are supposed to be opposite of each other. Thats what made it a “greeny” the reverse polarity of the pickups is what gave it the signature sound.

The neck pickup for greeny was fixed and magnets put in wrong, making it out of phase. Putting pickups in backwards won't actually change the sound. It's the magnets.

A lot of times, they look much better than they play. With that said, I owned one that was pretty comparable to a nicer Epiphone. Of course, this was after spending $400 to get it into a playable condition. In total, it cost around $800. Not worth the gamble. Everyone is always "impressed" right out of the box because they are practically "eye candy." Give it a week, and you realize they are not players right out of the box.

Hey Marty, I bought one of these (non-relic'd) Chibson Greenies about a year or so ago. I think I paid like 200 or 250 shipped. I love the guitar. I couldn't believe the quality---and for me, a very casual, at-home, non-gigging player, the guitar is close enough to the real thing for me. I found myself before ordering and after watching every Greenie documentary I could find. Happy I didn't have to pay what Hammett did, lol I look forward to your series on this. Thanks 👍

@@green461 by the hoo, it is legal to own at least one of these. As long as you aren't looking to resell it and/or advertise as the real thing. Based on my unsupported Google research, there is a slim chance it can get seized by customs and you will get a nasty letter from Gibson's lawyers. But for the most part, they are going after the major buyers and resellers. So order one at a time and be happy. They let US citizens who have traveled abroad and bought a counterfeit item at least 1 item, because there is so much of this going on, and again, as long as it is for your personal use and you don't intend to sell it, you're fine. More info than you may have wanted, but questions I had before and during ordering.

@@dougsmaintenanceshop5868 Thanks, I did some research and found some. I want one to mess around with, i like rewiring, building them, basically a test mule and dont want to take apart and modify my real one. I ordered 2 off ebay, (different sellers) one greenie and then another R9 one. One was 100. so my expectations are low, if i can go through them and they are good enough platforms to replace everything cool.. if not they will be living room wall decorations. If the greenie sets up well i'll put some SD green magic pickups in, set it up like the real one, and have a nice sounding LP that i dont care if gets scratched... a beater kind of. and the other one to do some R&D work on.. to see what i can make of it.

You had better than average luck on this one. The pups aren’t microphonic and it seems the setup is satisfactory straight out of the box. The Chibs I’ve ordered have all been nice, but I nearly always have the music store’s repair guy straighten things out and install a different set of pups, which I order cheap off Amazon…hate to break the subject, but there are “Chibson” (in a sense) pickups! Obscure devs such as “Kmise” who make perfectly good pickups which cost around $30 for the full set of two. I’ve ordered cheap pups three times for swapping out in Chibsons, and none of them have been lemons. And they sound very good, not “just okay”. It’s kind of unbelievable, lol.

I had a friend that bought a cheaper copy. He was a bass player that had no idea what he was buying. It was a copy of a gold top standard. I immediately knew it was fake. #1. Serial number not stamped on the back, #2. Gibson name screen print, not an inlay #3. Fretboard inlay very poorly done (glue showing) #4. Body and headstock smaller than normal. It played ok, but wasn’t close to a Gibson. He paid $600 for it. Eventually the top started to separate from the body.
