I Bought A Filthy, High Mileage Land Rover From G3 Car Auction UK! 

I bought a 11 plate Vauxhall Astra van 1.7 10 years ago with 130,000 miles on, everyone had said “why did you buy that thing, they so unreliable”, it’s currently on 311,000 miles, original turbo, exhaust, gearbox. The only major items I’ve had to change are a new alternator and clutch 😂 - it’s not worth selling now. Still gets over 50mpg.

Set of new number plates, valet, down to Jimmy the magician for paint, full service, good buff of the headlights, just ask Mat at highpeak autos.😅

Our local delivery guy drives a 3 year old Discovery- which he brought new. He’s a bright guy and worked in the trade previously- when I asked him why the LR instead of the normal delivery choices, he replied. “ all vehicles have issues, this will get me to every address ( lots are rural) whatever the time of year”.

£4k actually seems like a lot of money for that abused crate! 😮 BUT - looking forward to see what you do with it.

I wouldn't even bothering changing the classification into a non commercial as it will raise the road tax. Use it as a support/engine hauler/tow/camping vehicle. Buy another large suv or 4×4 to carry staff. Remember dogs love looking out of rear windows

What you've got there is a money pit! 4k is about right for it.hope the belts have been done, and hope the crank shaft doesn't snap! These cars are only worth anything if they have been properly maintained, that one hasn't. God help you or the next owner 😂

Ive been a taxi driver for nearly 27 years and if i had put a mileage on that it would have been over 300k! Jesus some people are just shockingly Lazy and have no pride in ownership its not like it was a 40 year old barn vehicle to start with....😢😢😢

Nice buy and sounds like a great plan to use it for media stuff , shame the bulkhead has been chopped that separates van to cab area but you won’t be needing that anyway . Looks so much cleaner and really been smartened up

Right. About 10 years ago I bought the same Disco 4 but not a van but a base version from a Police Auction. It had done 110,000 and was just on its 3rd engine! But then it was used by the armed response unit in the West Midlands so it hadn’t had an easy life. I paid £15k for it which made it the cheapest 4 year old Disco 4 on the market. The cool bits were that it was an ex-police armed response vehicle and when I tried to pay the Dartford toll, I couldn’t because it came up as an exempt vehicle. That lasted for a few months. It did need some work. I replaced all the seats from the basic cloth to leather. A lot of the trim was missing plus the engine cover all of which I sourced on eBay. I really didn’t need it as I already had a full-fat Range Rover but I used it as a doggie car. However what did it for me was it failed its first MOT (note police vehicles don’t have to have a yearly MOT). The rear high level stop light repeater did not work. And that is bonded in like a windscreen so the quoted cost was way more than £1,000. Then fate happened again and the local Jaguar Dealership contacted me ( they know me well) to say they had the deal of the century which was a 2 year old Jaguar F-Type 3 Ltd coupe they would let me have for about £20k less than list as they hadn’t prepped or advertised it as it come down from a Porsche dealership in Glasgow. So I bought it on the spot (I buy lots of cars because I’m a petrol head). I do sort of miss the LR Disco 4. I wish I had kept it if only for a doggie car.

Hi, ive had my 2006 2.7 rrs for 6 years now it was on 141k its now 194k and runs fantastic. This one looks fine with a little tlc on the bodywork it will look much better.

Great idea for the Landie Joe, it turned out great btw. I guessed 180k so I was way out. A little bit of tlc and its looking very tidy. Can’t wait for future vids on it.

A guy I knew had a bus company and had a disco 3 as a service wagon , he bought it cos it would tow a 20 t double decker bus , and it DID a few times

I know they get a bad rep with reliability, but if they're properly looked after they're capable of massive mileage. Ex father-in-law had a Disco 3, that did just over 200k almost faultless miles before a farmer bought it to use as a farm hack. Bought a Disco 4 in 2012 which I still see occasionally. Last time I was in it was 2017, it had done 250k miles then. He swore by a full service every 8k miles and lots of preventative maintenance.

Looks good for the price and age. If a customer can get say 18months of use relatively trouble-free motoring - they can scrap it later once other problems start to manifest.

I was once told by a car dealer friend of mine that if you see an older Land Rover for sale with a lower mileage, you have to ask yourself why is the mileage so low? Could be genuine, but also could mean that it's spent much of its life awaiting repairs, such is the reputation for LR reliability. He always recommended going for a Land Rover with a believable mileage, probably means any issues have been sorted.

I still have our 10 reg Qashqai which is on nearly 181k , and its hardly done many miles the last 2.5 years . My mate calls it the van !!

I would personally put it back with new Interior and headliner back seats and make it a nice discovery again maybe worth thinking about

Very good value at £4k I'd get a matching set of tyres which all 4 wd should have. Please be aware the speed limit for vans is lower on country roads and dual carriageways by 10 mph ! Although they may not realise it is a van.!

If you put rear seats in it, then are you not liable to a lot of tax? It will have been bought new taxed as a van, you will be changing it to a car with more seats? or is it just the blanked out rear windows that make it a van legally? are you planning to unblock those? you will have to tell DVLA you have turned it from a van into a car, and I wont be surprised if you get hit with a tax bill? do let us know?

I'm not a dealer but, know enough about car's to understand that JLR are " not worth a blow on a ragmans trumpet ". I just don't understand the fascination with British cars. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Putting seats in maybe but putting windows back I think would change the taxation class. So would you have to pay VAT on the original sale price (ouch) or on the amount you purchased it for? I really don't know. As for the engine. Belts, oil pump (spinning shell bearings) and snapping crankshaft. Lets hope you are lucky.

I would check with the DVLA for tax and its registered as a 2 seater commercial vehicle As when people change vans into camper vans there are things you need to do and conform too

I dont mind high mileage cars if they've been serviced as it means its probably a good one to have got that far. I would be nervous with this one however,as, if it was a farmer who owned it, they would only get rid of something if it was truly necessary! I would be fearful that a major problem may have recently occurred!

These commercials look such a half a***d job. I cant believe you buy them from the factory like this (actually , it is land rover after all). It looks like someone has done the conversion to a van at home in a hurry with a piece of chipboard and a spanner for the seats! Great video though.

You cannot legally add seats back in, its classed as a van. There are tax and insurance implications

It needs a new back seat and the rear window glass restored.

Put a set of descent tyres on there… a mix is terrible and can blow the transfer case, trans and or diff’s. None of the tyres on the car are a descent or safe brand.😮
