Congratulations boss! I do fear for your lower back later on. After 16 years of Les Paul crushing my spine, I changed to a SG and Tele. Always the best! 👍😃🌎🌏🌍🇮🇪🇨🇦
Excellent choice! I love my V and have had it since 2007. School of Rock was part of the desire for me as well, since I was at just the right age to be impressionable when it was released. For me, I was enamored with the classic white ‘67 reissue that was available at that time, but with the upcharge for that finish you got an ebony fretboard and it was totally worth it. The only mod I did to mine was installing a red Sanwa killswitch (inspired by Buckethead), but I’d love to do more in the future. Can’t wait to see what you do to yours! Congrats on the acquisition and I hope you enjoy it!
@@srh361okay i can see your take for other vids, even though id argue its more video journalism than a call out. but how is this “calling out?” he made a lighthearted joke because he bought a gibson and trogly loves gibson. if anything its a respectful nod to him, calling this a call out is a little sensitive imo.
@@crazyturkturk1733 I didn't he was "calling out" trogly, go back and reread my comment. I said the way KDH "calls out" other channels, it's about the way he chooses to make videos. I guess you don't understand.
So you're saying I need a second Gibson Flying V because mine is a special edition and I keep it mostly stock except pups. And I can't modify my Epiphone it's a Korina, I can't modify a 58 :) Well except pups, pots and tuners but that made it more original. I would love an old beat up Les Paul
Congratulations :) 2024 has been the year of Gibson for me as well. Never owned one before this year, but I have 2 SGs and 2 LPs now XD. Pre-owned, but in good condition, reasonably priced, and they're a joy to play. I finally understand, after all these years, why people like Gibson guitars so much.
Oh and by the way the pickup rings were added not to get the pickups higher but to stabilse the the pickups to stop them from "rocking" which is what they did !!
Definitely consider putting a Gibson 500T pickup in the bridge position. I have a 2001 Gibson '67 reissue V in white and I couldn't imagine it with any other pickup. Its perfect for it. Kluson also make some locking style replacement tuners that should drop right into your existing screw holes and headstock holes. And for a bridge replacement, I think TonePros would suit it well. Regardless of all that, looking forward to seeing the mods you make on this one.
Nice guitar, it will be better when you set it up for you. Had a 78 ? Silverburst, but the post for the ABR 1 sunk into the body, so I got rid of it. Nowadays, I would have fixed it myself. One of many I wish I kept! Have a great day, gentlemen.
I own a lefty 2000’s Gibson V. It’s a fun guitar, but my one big gripe with it is if you have to fiddle with the Jack or Switch or any of the electronics, you have to remove all the strings because the bridge sits over the pickguard.
Nice mods hmm I’d definitely replace the collapsed bridge with an oem part, replace the bridge pickup with an iron gear rolling mill or an appropriate Gibson pickup, the wiring I would go traditional with an Orange drop and wire the middle setting out of phase like Peter Green/ BB King add a couple of push pulls to do series/parallel and a blow switch ( bypass everything straight to amp) Tuners I would go hipshot locking tuners or any tuners the same shape as originals but in metal that have a smooth action and are locking, although for me locking is a lower priority with looks and smooth action being more important. As for knobs speed knobs over the old reflector ones. And if you really want to go to mod town fit a speedometer because you play so fast 😂
I subscribed a long time ago. I have the same V. Mine is stock though. I love mine. Unless im sitting down then it impossible to play but standing up it’s great. It is a beast.
Dear KDH - I bought my first flying V in 1980 - and worked in a bakery for it - working night shift- a bit like Kirk Hammet flipping burgers/and washing dishes
There are so many previous mods done to that V that it doesn't matter what you do to it. Might as well just do whatever the hell you want and have fun with it
I played a black 1994 Flying V for 23 years. I did sell it, but I bought a white 1995-model instead. That’s the most iconic colour for me. For a short while I owned a 2012-model, but it felt all wrong.
Vintage Gibson and Vintage Made In Japan guitars are the best !!!! ...... and you MUST go for "Witch Hat" Knobs instead of the reflector ones !! It's a very nice guitar !! ( .... but to me, 90's is not really "Vintage"........!!! 60's - 70's - 80's are "Vintage" ...!!!!)
Replace the Super 3 with a Tone Zone. You can thank me later. IMO it's the best thing Dimarzio ever produced. Excellent mid voicing, and slightly hotter, without being overwhelming...
I've always loved the Flying V, ever since I bought Ride The Lightning and saw Kirk and James playing them. They're such cool guitars. Incidentally, I have a cherry V, and I can tell you the cherry has stained all the liner inside of the case, so there's one reason to avoid that color 😂
you cant be in a 1970's esque rock band and not play a gibson. the v is cool but i think glen needs a 70's les pual with mini buckers and yalls bassist needs a gibson grabber bass, and the drummer needs a fiberglass kit with the acoustic horn bottoms, cant remember what they are called but yeah yall rock keep on keeping on
The pickup ring things doesn't make any sense to me... the pickup can't actually get any closer, because the underside of the pickguard is still at the same level... THAT is what's limiting the height, not where the top of the screw is at. It literally changes nothing!
Here's a tip, get a new headstock plate that has the string alignment to break the angle of the strings as the headstock design cause tuning issues, this string alignment plate will greatly improve that problem!
Everything about this guitar at this point is both frustrating and mildly infuriating at the same time. It's hard not to imagine how many Japanese brainchilds, and hands, have had their way with this poor survivor, and not want to rage. It would take me at least two weeks to process it and reopen the case with an ounce of motivation or hope. Unless, of course, I had about 32 ounces of Irish Whiskey and picked it up at 2am to torture the neighbors. Then it will have 'passed the test'! Cheers
Some of your brand snob fans aren't going to forgive you lol. Me it doesn't matter as long as it plays good, sounds good, and I like the way it looks. roughly in that order.
Something about the "NO ROSEWOOD" made me laugh. It's like a a circus tent with a small little sign on the entrance that says "No clowns here" Scooby Doo style. Oh, better not go in there and look.
A famous Flying V player you’re forgetting is the one and only Michael Schenker. I remember him telling a story where KK Downing bought the one he originally wanted.
Michael Schenker is arguably THE guy to make flying Vs synonymous with Heavy Metal. He wasn't the first person to play a V, but he definitely made it popular. Anyone who doesn't know him, he's a melodic genius with godlike vibrato. He's also a bit of a lunatic, but guitar wise was sensational. He was a massive influence to Hammett, Mustaine, Hatfield, Randy Rhoads, Slash just to name a few. He's the missing link between guitar playing in the early 70s and guitar playing in the late 70s/early 80s. Really doesn't get enough credit for his influence.
Accept should have been shown in the history section, they were THE Flying V band in the mid 80s! They even had two burning Vs on their Restless And Wild album art :)
I have that album, bought way back when... It always amazed me somehow that you would do such a thing. Later on I learned from Wolf Hoffmann they'd actually used fake Vs 🤣🤣 But yes - Accept was, for me as well, the quintessential V band. Even though pretty much all the riffs of that album Wolf played on his favourite white Strat!! 😎👍
*Glenn Fricker has entered the chat* I have a 2006 Faded Cherry flying V and it's my absolute favourite guitar. Something about it just hits right. As a huge Michael Schenker and KK Downing fan I got my red V and never looked back. I've always loved the '67 layout, it just looks and feels right.
At around 17:25 you mention the "bridge is supposed to be curved" In my experience, some are and some aren't. Depends on the year and the factory making them. So I'd say that it hasn't "bent" out of shape, it was probably flat to begin with. It would probably snap before it bent! As I can't see how string pressure would flatten out a cast bridge.Perhaps some Gibson experts can chime in here 👍I agree it makes sense to have a slight curve, but a few bridges I've seen are simply flat, no curve.
You bought a Gibson.......I'll send a sympathy card. That aside I am glad you are happy. I am aspiring to find a V but a rear routed one and not a Gibson. I enjoy hearing your playing and I hope you rock out with this guitar!
Some cut and polish and a buffer will deal with most of those scratches. Replace the rusty screws so you don’t end up stripping the heads and give your switches and pots a spray of electrical contact cleaner. You should be good to go.
17:25 The bridge is supposed to flat on the top side, it's the saddles that follows that radius. It's what happens when you have the tailpiece decked so the strings rest on the bidge itself before going to the saddles, either top wrap or raise the tailpiece.
@@casanovafunkenstein5090 it's an almost 30 year old guitar, started out not being top wrapped, has been like that for a LONG time. My 20 year old ESP still has a dead flat bridge because the tailpiece wasn't decked so the strings were resting on the bridge.
Gosh, these guys might be the goofiest Duo to come off that gem of an Island.. never buy black guitars, you can see imperfections on black finishes much easier than any other color.
Wow, you guys are lucky to be so young. When School of Rock was your inspiration to start playing. Mine was my dad. 1979 I had my first lesson. I was 7.
It's nice to see someone "in the trenches" modifying a guitar. It's what we (eg: "the OLD guys") used to do way back when.....and we still do. Way to go KDH!
I love my Flying Vs. For me it was KK Downing mostly. I got a cherry red 1958 layout, 67 body and headstock, my only Gibson and it's wonderful. Not the biggest fan of the 500T in the bridge but it definetly does it's thing. I've just moved more to blues but generally PAFs even for metal. Got an Epiphone 58 Korina and it's an old Korean made but I don't known what happened, if the guy who made it was super passionate or what but it is my most gorgeous guitar. Just perfect, fretjob perfect, fit and finish perfect, gorgeous Korina veneer on the solid Korina. I put Toneriders (AC2) and coil splits in mine and now it's the best sounding guitar, at least in my country. People constantly compliment it. Vs are just special. I don't understand the criticism for sitting down, I think every guitar except the Flying V is awkward sitting down, especially a Les Paul (which I do love) even a Strat and Tele have you holding the neck mostly horizontal which gives you that twisted wrist ergonomy. On a V you have the perfect 45°. Pickups a little further apart than the Les Paul, so a bit brighter on the bridge and a bit darker on the neck. There is no blues sound that comes close to a PAF style pup in the neck position on a V. Just ask Albert King! And with a proper set of bright alnico 2 PAFs the bridge is very awesome, not quite Telecaster bright but getting there. I wish Gibson and Epiphone had more models. So many Les Pauls by every manufacturer but classic symmetric shape Flying V not even Gibson have more than a handful for sale and they're expensive, despite a Les Paul being way harder to make it more than a Standard... I wish Epiphone would make 67s and despite having a perfect one I am lusting after the new Epiphone Korina V in coop with the custom shop and I've seen people compare them favourably. Flying Vs are the best. Followed by Telecaster, then Les Paul and SGs, then Superstrats and at the very bottom Strats. For me. If I had only two it would be a V and a Tele. Together they can rule the world. Definetly try putting some alnico 2 PAFs in the V. It just unlocks it. Burstbuckers or Toneriders! And trust me you can still make metal with those pups. Plenty of boosts, drives and screamers out there. While Ibsave for a the new Epiphone 58 I will build a 67 Vibrola V in cherry (I can't find sparkling burgundy nitro finish...). And no I'm not obsessed by guitars at all!!! I needed two Vs, two Les Pauls, a Strat a Tele an SG and an RG. How else would I decorate my walls!
watching you unbox at 0:31 you broke a big rule and almost sent yourself to the hospital, you had your thumb firmly inserted in the tape and you were cutting TOWARDS your left thumb with a razor blade using the strength of your arm to pull it towards your hand, I saw the "almost blood" moment. A: you have NO idea how quickly that blade will cut MEANING; if the blade went faster than you predicted there is no way you would have been able to move your left thumb out of the way, AKA HOSPITAL TRIP for stitches or worse. Sorry to get picky here and it's not even a minute in but DUDE!!! NEVER cut TOWARD your hand EVER, always rotate so you are pushing the blade AWAY from your body. Just a friendly reminder, I really dig your content and would rather not see a "how to not use a box cutter" episode.
Have a mid 90's Gibson V and Explorer and they are the best guitars I own. Far from excellent condition but they sound and play great. IMO mid 90's Gibson's have some built in magic.
I hate, hate, HAAAATE it when people put stickers on their guitar. Unless you're in a punk rock band (and even then, it's barely acceptable) please DO NOT do this. It's trashy AF.
Paint white polka dots on it & you have close to a Randy Rhodes Flying V...neat guitar, with a better set of pickups it should rock, '57 humbuckers..?!?!
Man , I got lucky buying my two SGs new. I have a 2011 and a 2002 ,and they came perfect. I wish Gibson would focus their attention to guitars and not merch and marketing.
I'd be concerned about any petrochemical solvent around a cellulose finish. A quick wipe over might not damage the finish if allowed to evaporate quickly, but cellulose isn't known for its resilience. However, an abrasive polish and some elbow grease will clean any kind of paint or lacquer. Naptha (known as white spirit in UK and Ireland) is plenty common in DIY stores, and is the go to solvent for cleaning up unfinished fretboards before oiling.
Dude, Trogly, i'd never buy a Gibson! But i appreciate the story behind the purchase, in that case i'd buy the James Hetfield Explorer i've seen when i was a kid.
You know -no offense to Glenn - but Glenn just has the look of a shorter person but I realize that KD is tall and Glenn is probably closer to 5'10" than 5' 6". My apologies Glenn!😂
Top wrap for the win, but no sense in doing that ball end business. If the strings break their, they're either too old or you need to file a little radius into the tailpiece.
The extra ball ends aren’t to stop the string breaking. Without them the end of the string wrap pokes out at the bottom of the tail piece and can be quite sharp. The extra ball end acts as a spacer that stops that from happening.
@@KDH hey man, thanks for the response bro. Fan of your channel for quite some time now. Also been a guitar tech and collector for over 30 years, they never had a problem with sharp ends.

Here’s the thing, while we know you’re not a fan of Gibson. It’s not the guitars fault, it’s the company and their insatiable need to be scumbags and tools.
1996 is my FAVORITE YEAR for anything. It was a wonderful time. I got my first official guitar in 1996! A tuxedo Strat. I love the Tuxedo V also. Black and White is the best color scheme ever. Congrats on the (old) new guitar. I never thought I'd be old. Us late model gen X'rs still can't figure out where the time went😢
I hope you got this guitar cheap..Found the Eppiphone SG was better than the Gibson. For me small hands Gibson neck hard to play. Same problem with fender's.
