I got a 780ti recently but sold it. It’s too overkill for retro stuff and not good enough for modern stuff. I would have kept it if it was ASUS but it was a Gigabyte Windforce and I only collect Direct CU/Strix cards.

It is overkill for retro, but that is something some people look for. Kepler is the last generation of Nvidia cards with Windows XP driver support, so the 780 Ti is about the fastest card you can stick in an XP machine.

Same. And I didn't even buy one until last year. I bought a Vega 64. Yeah. I was that guy. And that guy made $300 profit by selling it durring the mining boom and buying a 1080ti when used prices crashed.

One of the great things about pc gaming is the enormous library of old games you can play. If you were really hard up for a system to game on you could build one super cheap with something like this in it and still have plenty of games you could play on it.

I actually STILL use an ASUS CUDA II GTX 780 ti in a first gen ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 board with a XEON X5670! It did originally have an i7 920 but I upgraded it with the XEON. The whole system was actually dumped on my front lawn back in 2020 in bad shape. I got the whole system cleaned up and running and was BEYOND thrilled to have it during the great "GPU apocalypse!" Got a Corsair 850 watt PSU and 8GB RAM with a beat up but usable case missing a side panel and a 19" monitor to boot all for free! At first I got mad that someone dumped it on my lawn until I realized what it was! The 780 ti DOES help to keep my house warm and save me some fuel oil in the winter but makes me use more air conditioning in the summer so I guess it balances out! 😁 PS: You can still get those custom made drivers called something like Nemux or Nimux drivers or similar.....I forgot the name.....I think, and they DO fix issues and increase FPS for Keplar based cards from what I hear. I haven't tried them yet, but I'm tempted.....👍👍

I got 2 gtx 780’s in Sli, in my x58 Xeon w3690 sytem, it’s running windows 7 ultimate 64bit, and plays all games in my vast pc games collection from 2002-2012 and is awesome, stable and gives out nothing but joy, don’t try and run new games on it, no point, different era.

@ruinedlasagna I've not come across many that don't, early games from the win 98 era don't like so much, but most games, I've played, and my collection is vast, have no issue, SoF, Fear, Halo, nfs, Callll of Duty, medal of honour, serious sam 1&2, Painkiller to name a very tiny few

Maybe VRam overflow on Doom Eternal? Normaly its a well optimized game but if the VRam is full, the card begins to offload the data into the normal ram, which is slower. Maybe this is the reason for the bad framerate in Doom?

Me too mate. Their biggest issue is a lack of DX12 feature support. If they had that, they would be a lot more viable in my opinion

I had a 780ti, then a 980ti and now a 3060ti Gave my brother my old 980ti, and I wish the 780ti was still worthy-even if just a budget tier card. I've heard there are drivers to support older units, but they are not official (kind of black market shady).

I use one of these exact GPUs as a placeholder while I wait on my current build eBay GPU to come in the mail. I build quite a bit each year and it's helpful to just have a extra rest GPU laying around. These are actually absurdly quiet for a blower model

Tesla M40 would be a better choice. It’s around 40, or 70 $ when you account cooling and eps connector. It also has 12gb of vram, and is based on maxwell

I got back into PC gaming when the 1080TI came out, one day you will be happy you bought that. I would build a PC for game from the time that GPU was at it's prime though. Obviously newer games are not going to run the best but for those older games sure!

I run a GTX 770 2GB within my HP dual socket hexcore xeon z600, it was the minimum I could find to obtain 4K 3840x2160 real estate, £50 from CEX with two year warranty, lasted me six years or more too :D

Did they actually issue you some updates, honestly, I've never bothered but do render within blender, PCB CAD CAM and such as for gaming I'm still playing payday 1/2[1080p on medium to low gfx], C&C and the like :)

The problem with these cards for me is the power supply, my optiplex has a 275 watt power supply, so a low profile rx 6400 is what I was looking at....

Even tho the 780 ti isnt what we would call fast nowadays you are still bottlenecking it with that cpu. Get a cheap xeon 1230 V2, 1155 motherboard and you can keep your ram.

I ran 2x 770s sli on a my x58 rig for a while. Then used a single 780ti. Honestly i dont recall ever being dissatisfied with the performance of either set up. What i didnt like is the power consumption. I eventially went with a single 1070 and that how that system sits till this day. I think is incredibly unfortunate that they made these cards obsolete on the software side, because the horse power is certainly still there. I hear there are custom driver outthere that allow these cards to stay relavent.

In your opinion should I snag a GTX 780 or 750? My OS is Windows XP 32-bit so that limits me as to what GPU I can use, but I'm not really playing any crazy graphics games.

Kinda, but the RTX can support modern features and has upscaling, and the mobile-GPU takes like 1/5th the power only.

@@ABaumstumpf for sure. That much lower power-draw, especially with energy costs being what they are, makes a big difference. Also his 2050 laptop may only have 8 GB or RAM. An 16 GB upgrade may help.

I didn't even know there was a 2050. Any gaming laptop is going to struggle with heat and it causes it to throttle.

It should perform much better in games with low quality resources but struggle a lot in any modern title with its 64-bit bus. I assume it beats a 780Ti in csgo but loses in cs2.

I run a 750ti on my pc it runs AAA games as well as simulation intensive games completely fine and yes a better GPU wouldn't be bad but your honestly not looking at this review the right way

was using this card for about 6 months, its not that bad at all but i don't play most triple AAA games and the ones i do are now old so for me it was no5t a big thing but still worth the price at £40 if like me your GPU dies and you just need to get up and running again for the time being.

Keplar did not really hold up even back in ps4 generation. The AMD counterparts aged much better and Maxwell and Pascal GPUs also aged well at the end of ps4 gen.

ProYamYamPC : first of all, incorrect PCI-EX cable connection....for such a GPU that eats 300+ watts on some occasions, you need 2 separate PCI-EX cables instead of 1 due to not enough amperage available through 1 cable (no the daisy chained parasitical 8-pin isn't an equivalent). Back in 2013 the GTX 780 Ti 3GB was faster than AMD R9 290(X) 4GB....whereas today it's slower than the R9 290(X) 4GB due to AMD-s parallel computing power of their architecture.

Eh, not really. AMD stopped supporting a lot of their older cards while Nvidia still provides updates. Sure, you can get custom drivers for your older AMD cards, but those are not official.

The 290x lasted until 2020. Directx 12.1 and drivers being discontinued a year later.

I think you mean driver support. That may be true but the cards themselves didn't. I had one die from use/heat and a friend had two die from the same. If I had to bet, I would say more than half are dead by now. They were power hungry and hot cards but they performed great and got better with driver updates.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the R9 series only support DX12.0 at a feature level, not 12.1. However, it's better support than Kepler, that's for sure.

Imo don't buy a 780 Ti for modern games, buy it because it's the fastest officially fully supproted Windows XP GPU. Sure you could hack in 980 Ti support, but that's not officially supported.

780ti was and still is junk , the 290 non x was the best gpu at that time and it proved that (just dont buy the blower stock ones)

They were real close when they were released, the 780ti had a slight advantage but AMD's drivers pushed the 290x to king of the cards back then if you could deal with the heat and noise.

a positive for the 780ti is that its the most powerful graphics card that officially supports windows XP and its also the last NVidia graphics card to support analogue signals for CRT monitors. couple this with a i7 3770k and you will have a monster windows XP PC. If you ad 32GB ddr3 1600Mhz RAM and 2+ 2tb SATA SSDs you can dual boot windows XP with windows vista lol

How are you able to get it running? I was just testing my old 780ti today, most games are not playable. it kicks me out of the game before it even started

it sounds like you're either running into a driver/Windows issue or there's a physical problem with the card itself

the card was already outdated when it first came out for comparision the 290x aged so much better with more vram and dx 12 support.

I gamed on this card for 6 year until it died. It was a fantastic card though it was very handicapped in 4K with only 3GB vram. Still a solid 1080p card even today but it will struggle with high end games from last 2-3 years because of VRAM. Nvidia loves to VRAM cripple their cards so you have to upgrade next go around.

The card struggled when it had to play a game where it had to carry the load, instead of the CPU having to do it. I don't know how feasible for you it'd be but for older cards it'd be nice to see a 'real world pairing' PC, the type of PC which people would be putting a GTX 780Ti into, so viewers could have results where the card stretches its legs and ones where they'd get a more realistic result.

It is a 10 year old card so yeah. Not bad and it was the fastest single-chip GPU but Maxwell was just a massive step not too long after.

Maxwell was a huge step over Kepler. Cards like the 980 Ti and Titan X are somewhat viable today
