The dot being stuck means the CMOS clock battery is out. The dot spinning is the internal clock. To replace the battery you need to take that PS2 apart.

I was wondering why you say "its hard to not get any scratches on a disc this old".. then i saw you pile the discs up on top of each other around the 16 min mark.. and now i understand why. You would prlly be baffled by all my computer, ps, ps2, and xbox games that are still in pristine condition bc i simply handle them correctly lol.

The reason the dot is not moving is because the button cell battery inside the PS2 is dead. The battery keeps the clock going when the system is unplugged. Just replace the battery, set the clock, and you should be good to go.

I’ve got a silver one of these consoles that still runs perfectly today. Just re ordered The Simpsons Hit and Run and San Andreas again for it as I lost my discs for them.

The orb isn't spinning because the internal coin battery which keeps the time is dead. Easy to replace but you will need to open it up. Once replaced set the tone and orbs will spin. I'd suggest cleaning the laser with some isopropyl alcohol and see if that helps. Also the laser mechanism might be slipping on the worm screw. You can look at other videos on how to adjust

I remember being mad at my dad back when he bought me a ps2 instead of the ps3 I was asking him for. Now I am grateful he didn't, and didn't make him return it because I still have it to this day.

This is the PS2 I Still Play Today, The Slim is so good and is the best game console in my opinion

The odd noise with certain discs can be caused by the disc tapping the stopper that comes out to stop the disc spinning when you open the lid. Mine did that with a few games, but when I taped the stopper down, the noise stopped and those games were less prone to locking up when loading.

One of my old silver ps2 slims won’t read or play any games without putting some weight on top of the console. The first big model of ps2 works the best.

Until you manage to replace the CMOS battery on the motherboard, you may want to try setting the date anyway in the system settings (I think if you just select the date and press confirm that's enough), then you should be able to see the little orbs on the dash screen spinning. This was my experience at least when I bought a European PS2 model SCPH-75003 earlier in 2020. Of course, the date will still revert after power-down (or maybe only after mains power is lost?) until the dead battery is changed, but if you just want to see the orbs spinning, this is what you can do.

My PS2 slim from 2006 is still in fantastic condition. Just finished the original Devil May Cry last week and it was great. That said, I still have the same clock and orb problem as you do but from what I read, it shouldn't really affect the console reading discs.

My then gf, now wife got me a ps2 slim in 2005, its a 7000 model, still works great! I still have thr original box and manual too. I have newer consoles, but i built up a hige ps2 library when everyone else moved on to the ps3. Still play some games on it from time to time. I love popping in a disc, and playing a game, no "updates" or any of that crap. Simpler time then.

Fun fact the ps2 remote has controller buttons that's why there's a remote control on or off option if you want it to work with games.

The light on the bios is for the watch battery, it needs replaced or reset, if it's got juice it'll spin, if not they'll combine into 1 big circle.

I wish my ps2 AC adapter worked so I could play without it turning off this video makes me want to buy one soon

my new ps2 slim just arrived today, works perfect so far, so happy, the hdmi adapter worked too, now just waiting for champions of norrath to arrive lol

First you should probably open the console and clean it out I can see that it’s pretty dusty inside the air vents and second take a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol and gently clean the lasers And finally inside the disc lid There’s a little metal rod that keeps the Lid up If there is dirt in there the games won’t load I’ve had the same problem Hope this helps

The 70000 series is the best of the slims, because you can solder a sata port to it.

You are correct. That dot is supposed to animate and there are supposed to be lots of them. From some reading, it not moving may be the CMOS battery (a battery on motherboards that enables the keeping of time and settings when there is no power to the board) is out of power

Just confirmed when I switched from my tv in my bedroom to my monitor in the living room. All you need to do is adjust the date/time from the main menu and that “blue dot” will spin like it’s supposed to.

Looks like the lens is on its way out. Usually when dual layer DVD’s don’t run properly it’s the first sign.

The digital out (optical) is optional. I chose to leave it on because of sound.

If i could advise you ,gently clean you ps2 *laser lens* with a *Q tip* and isopropyle *alcohol* . I had the same issues and thought the discs were faulty ,but then It all about cleaning the lens from invisible *dirt* ! Thank me later !

It’s pixelated dude due to the ps2 being hooked up to a hdmi flat screen tv. The ps2 is made for old “fatback” crt TVs and the cables make a difference too. Try component cables (with blue/green wires)

Back in the day we had 2 second hand ps2 slims and both had the same problems with weird noises and disc tray /reading disc problems. It also gave red screen a couple of times.

You always want to go with the slim jacob, which is one of the best consoles ever made. You need to take care, and clean both your system and games regularly. Not throw them in a pile btw, not a good idea, treat them with care. A piece of advice, put some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle, and mix with filtered water. Buy a lens cloth, and clean the system, and games. Never rub in a circle on the disks, clean in a straight line from the center to the edge of the disk. Ive been around a long time dude, and i have a lot of systems

You have to set your clock in your settings. Once you set the clock the little orbs will start spinning. Unless your internal clock battery is dead.

:D Have you tried a lens cleaner disc? Dust may have built up and be an issue with the console sometimes? Or it could be a firmware issue? Perhaps if you can upgrade the software for the console? It might be none of these things, but it is worth a try; it can't hurt.

The dot in that first menu that spins in circles is tied to the consoles clock, if that’s not running than the clocks not running, the clock can be set and started in the system configuration.

Mine used to do this when loading games. Its dried up grease on laser track. This causes laser worm gear to jump and grind. Remove laser unit and clean with IPA. Fresh grease will solve this problem. Different games/developers read from different areas on disc once anti piracy section has been read. While your in there replace clock battery and clean fan.

I think that sound and part of the problem is the optical lens housing rubbing on the rail that moves the lens, lube the rail with silicone. That happened on mine at least.

About the orbs, it's the internal battery wich regulates the clock that died. It's normal after all that time

Ive never seen the original packaging, i was real little when we got it, possibly before i was born. I still play the same ps2 in my own place now

One cause for grinding sound, the orange cable behind the laser jumps up to read it and it’s only glued down so it doesn’t hit the disk, eventually it will get loose and needs to be set down or it will destroy every disc

i did bought one today in my local CEX used with 2 year warranty playstation 2 SLIM SCPH 90004 no box very little use for 55€.

Your internals around that laser look a bit different from mine, and I got mine from my buddy who refuses to take these things apart. He's a nurse, I work on old consoles. It looks like that has been broken into at some point...

That strange noise may be the ribbon cable from the laser, some times that ribbon starts to touch the disc making that noise

That is the sound of the laser tapping on your disc when it cannot properly focus. Do NOT continue using your discs, because it will eventually create a double-ring scratch. This is due to the laser being pushed up and down in order to focus, and in doing so, the two plastic retaining clips that keep the laser eye in place hits the disc. The disc speed is also changed during this process, again to find the right combination of speed and focus. You can verify all this by opening up the console and taping down the two "cover-is-closed" switches (on by the power button and the other is under the leg of the cover door by the PS2 logo on the top) and watching the red light under the disc. This is an issue with probably ALL slim models (except possibly the ones where the laser assembly is screwed down). You can try to fix it by adjusting the potentiometers underneath the laser eye. This adjusts the voltage for the laser and may help improve its ability to focus, thereby stopping the optics head from moving up/down and hitting the disc. Make sure you have a multimeter to check the resistance at the potentiometers to ensure they are set within the proper range, because using wrong values could very well cause the diode to burn up. This is a temporary fix (how long will it last? who knows...) and even a brand new replacement laser will eventually have this problem. For slim PS2s, look into Free DVD Boot and make yourself an FMCB memory card. From there, take an old router that has NAS support via USB drives (the router must of course have USB ports) and set up a network share -- I use an old ASUS RT-N66 and use Open PS2 Loader to stream your games.

That is definitely not like new at all! Should of returned it! I’m selling a much better condition one currently on amazon which still had the plastic wrap on the glossy part.

I think the system is fine. My AV2HDMI converter just came in and when I used it, I noticed that the circle at the main menu doesn’t spin. But when I connect it to my tv with the AV cables instead of the HDMI converter, the circle spins at the main menu...

The reason why the orbs are not spinning is because the CMOS battery in the ps2 slim is dead, meaning that the console can't tell the time and date anymore, this happens with both ps2 fat and slim

You can set the clock manually and the orbs will spin again.

To make the orbs spin you have to manually change the date/time settings from the default 1/1/2000 12:00 even if you have a working battery the orbs will not spin on their own unless you do this. For your trouble with the games I have one suggestion CLEAN THE LASER LENS. There is the main laser lens that is plainly visible and easy to clean but there is also another lens underneath it that is trickier to get to but will accumulate dust over the years making it difficult to read some game discs. You will have to take the ps2 apart but it should be pretty easy and I'm sure there are tutorial videos you can find to help you. You mentioned in your video the warranty seal was unbroken. So that means it has never been cleaned inside. Cleaning the lower lens may do wonders for you.

That PS2 slim you have kind of looks like mine only it's silver and it also has a front vent as well however at the back of my PS2 slim it only has one vent on the upper right whereas yours also does have a upper right vent but yours also has a lower left rear vent and the model I have is the scph-79001 model I'm thinking of getting the exact same one you have one day because you know I rather have more cooling in the back so that all the heat can escape and plus I even have an additional cooling fan I could hook up to the USB port as well 🤔😅
