@@UndergroundEric Eric thanks very much for replying to my comment. It's nice to see other people's work to get idea to improve my Channel. Take Care & Stay Safe.
2022 is off to a great start. Harefeild extension, new junctions new layout getting built. Room and plans look great. Looking forward to seeing it progress
Great video. I have a similar cabin with the same construction. One thing to bear in mind is that the walls expand and contract by over 3cm between summer and winter. I think you’ll need some adjustable feet for the layout legs. Also beware of attaching any long item vertically to the wall, unless it has slotted fixtures to allow for the movement. Love the carpet, we fitted carpet in our cabin and it transformed it from a shed to a cosy room. Looking forward to seeing progress with the layout.
Hey mate, cheers. Yeah i used baton around the walls just as a stop gap mainly, ive been building framework/legs so the layout can be self supporting now, aswell as leaving screws loose on wall mounted items if accross different logs! 🙂
The look on your face says it all! Delighted for you.Fantastic new space for you & look forward to the planned layout developments, especially the London Underground Depot.
Hi Eric, really enjoyed the video, I built my cabin with a builder friend of mine and have been happy as you are ever since. It gave me the space to create the layout in my head as it will with you with Harefield. I’m looking forward to the extension of the layout, cheers Eric, John
Brilliant Eric, Takes me back to when my shed arrived . All the brown treatment just the same. Lovely job you’ve done on the painting etc. I honestly think this is what we all enjoy the building of it all. We even had the rain like you 💦💦😂😂. That’s going to look amazing when it’s finished. Well done to you all. All the best Duncan. Cornwall.
Cabin looks great. I was unaware they could be based on resin posts . That's a big saving on time and money. Best of luck with the set up . Look forward to seeing your progress. BTW Milo is an awesome name for a cat 🐈😻
I too am a log cabin dweller and as other have already said, you need to be very careful before screwing anything to the walls as they are permanently on the move, expanding and contracting vertically with the seasons and weather ! I have hung wall cabinets off one horizonal log OK, but you must not bridge multiple vertical logs with brackets or anything screwed to the wall logs. Screwing your layout, as you have done, to a wall log means it will go up and down by about 5 to 10mm. Those vertical brackets holding up Baker St. will cause you immense issues, you need to remove them before they damage the cabin walls. There are multiple YT videos on the subject. My layout is self supporting and does not connect to the walls at all. If you check out your windows and door frames you will see that they are not actually screwed to the walls but just clamp to the inside and outside of the walls with about an inch gap at the top for expansion and contraction. Having said all, that best of luck and look forward to your progress.
Looking really good, I was gonna say make sure you bolt it, lock it, even security alarm it perhaps, plus i would add blinds or curtains just to stop the nosy people lol 😆 😉
Great stuff. Was waiting for you to think about extending into the shed, but then you said you're getting rid of the shed. Shame the cabin's windows don't open outwards, then you'd not need to worry about trimming the backscene around them. Oil-filled radiators are fab for model railways in outdoor rooms.
Haha, i need some sort of garden at least 😂 The windows were actually meant to open outwards but there was a bit of a mess up with the plans and i didnt want to delay further to redo it sadly! Ah well
Hi Eric, Love your videos mate as I’m thinking of starting this hobby up again as it’s improved so much over time with sound etc. Hope the extra space gives you what you need as it’s looking cool so far. Look forward to further updates on your project. All the best. 👍🏻
Exciting space and development ideas. Just sharing my own experience but are you sure you have enough insulation? My layout is in my garage and wish I had fitted some before going too far. Carpet on the floor is good by maybe add some in the roof rafters as that is where most of the heat will go and you can still do before you go any further? I find that the garage is about 3 or 4 degrees warmer that the outside temperature so in winter will be just above freezing inside! My oil heater takes the edge off the cold but you still need to wear a couple of layers and sometimes points and track suffer a bit!
@@UndergroundEric Good call and wish I had done that so trust me, you won’t regret it! Any left over Kingspan is a great, easy to shape base for scenery too! Looking forward too seeing how you develop the rest of Northwood Hills High street…
Hi, just picked up the video, enjoyed it, just moved house, layout was in the loft but that’s not possible at the new house, so am looking at a cabin as an alternative. Could I ask what are the internal dimensions of you cabin, just gives me a perspective. Apologies if you have been asked this already.
Hi matey, i played with the external dimensions to give me a smidge over 17x9 internal size. Had to make sure i had enough wiggle room to be able to take the boards apart due to the dowels! 🙂
Hi Eric. Belated happy birthday - Great (excuse the pun) clock! Watching your intro to your videos, I wondered whether there exists a 5" gauge version of a Tube train. Charlotte was spot on with her idea to paint around the windows and doors with a contrasting colour - as with you and the choice of blue. I don't know what your plans are in terms of power sockets, but double sockets all the way and don't skimp on the number - you'll bound to run out! With the money you have invested in your layouts (and, indeed, your wooden cabin) I would seriously consider a decent alarm system. Don't necessarily rush to throw out the carpet off-cuts; put them in the shed until it goes (depending on how soon). Have you allocated space for your computer and a worktop for your modelling? Phew - it'll be 6 am before finish reading this!
Thanks! There are a couple 7&1/4 versions but nothing in 5”, id love one some day but have too many as it is! Yeah i think the colours came out really well, i have some touching up to do still mind. Currently fitting double sockets today as it happens! Got 6 in here, should be enough i hope. Yes security will be a must matey
That’s the sad thing with all the model engineering clubs I’ve been a member of, there’s a massive disconnect between the older members and younger ones when it comes to growing, or at least sustaining, the club. Log cabin looks like being a great project, much better idea 🙂
That cabin looks brilliant, looks like you going to busy for some time. That’s a shame about the model club, it’s those sort of tales that put me off joining one myself.
@@UndergroundEric well I’d imagine yours is going to be more fun, my boy would certainly love to join a club just to crash Thomas engines 😆 I had a similar idea with my garage set up, just have friends round and work on a layout.
@@WesternSignalman haha its what its all about though, just having a laugh! We were trying to see how much of a jump/gap we could have with the loco still carrying on 😂😂😂
Great video Eric and very interesting as I'm looking for something similar to store my layout. How warm is it in there as you haven't got any insulation on the roof or the walls? Summer I imagine will be lovely but I worry it will get cold and and damp in the winter with no heat source on unless you are in there ? Interested to know how it's feeling with the carpet in there. Cheers Pete
Hey Pete, the floor and ceiling are insulated, the walls are 44mm thick logs so keep the heat in well. With the carpet its even better again. The little oil filled radiator works wonders however i may get a second just to improve the time taken to initially warm up. Some people put a bluetooth plug in so they can switch the heating on half hour or so before coming down
I can relate to your comments about the railway club ! having left mine ! having suffered the older establishment for 7 years who view on 00 trains as " toys " and not skilled modling Its a shame as it was a good project and hopefull other can take it forward ! But as one leading member put it in a text "00 is a wat of space " You have to walk away from these people who frankly are very selfish and almost resent young people and resist change . I am now of the appinion that the big club is dead or will die becouse of the internet now people can come together with like minded idears and yes if someone is lucky enough to have some room or big shead ( BTW home you have it alarmed and cammerad & Insurured ) then that may be the future . the Web is full of how too do videos and tips etc so even that aspect of the club is redundant " Everard Jution " and "Dean park " have a encilopidia of U tube videos now on how too build a layout . Real enjoyed this video will look for more and the cat is so cute !
