Congrats on your teeth - they were looking a little jaundiced. Now, if you only drink distilled water you'll make Keeps look like its working. Ask me how I know.
I've been looking for a car like that for years now. Post COVID pricing put it out of my reach forever :( The only thing missing on that one is the HUD that started in 2011.
People need to recognize the time and effort that not only goes into working on the car itself, but to set the camera and film every angel that’s usable. We appreciate it Alex! Thank you! 🙏🏽 cause i can imagine how fast you can get the work done without filming everything.
Had a 95 z28 6-speed in grade 12 . Got rear ended by a girl in my class leaving commencement ceremony , it was a total loss . Bought a 99 SS 6-speed with the insurance . Kept that car for about 5 years . Now 22 years later I just bought a low mileage black 1994 z28 6-speed . Finally got to do all the mods I couldn’t afford in high school . It’s nice to be in a 4th gen again .
Yeah I thought "That car has been beaten on constantly!" - but I think it might have just been the last owner who's beaten on it for a short time before f*ck*ng the synchros through incompetent changing and parking it up - given how the clutch still had plenty of beef left in it, the flex discs were in good condition etc. At 40,000 miles if it had been abused constantly I'd have expected more wear.
Oh yep, can't wait for the next video on this car, i want to see this trans rebuild ! After all those years, Legit Street Cars is still one of the best car youtube channel out there. Great job, Alex & Max !
good morning from Australia... One thing that also can cause the crunchy shifts is the pilot bearing in the crankshaft, which looked a bit average in the vid. Another maybe indication is the Haynes manual bookmarked at crankshaft, if that's been replaced then the pilot bearing is probably a different size for auto and manual trans. It could have an auto crank in it with the wrong size pilot they didn't swap out, the input shaft then doesn't run true which presents as crunchy shifts at higher revs. Looking forward to the actual diagnosis, it's a beautiful looking car!
When did you see the pilot bearing well enough to judge its condition? I’ve changed the pilot bearing on an LS3, and I’ll venture that you couldn’t possibly have seen what you think you saw. The best view we get is at 35:22, and what’s visible there is perfect.
@@cheapme1850 I wouldn't be too confident with that statement. I'm turning 18 in a couple months and I've been daily driving a 06 accord manual since I got my license. While I agree that majority of people my age have little to no clue how to work a manual transmission, it's not all of us.
I’m so elated that someone saw the potential of a 5th generation Camaro. These are great muscle cars. I’ve had a 1993 fox body 5.0 5-speed, a 1987 Buick Regal Turbo-T, 2 fourth gen Camaro SS’s, both 6 speed manuals, and now a 5th generation Camaro ZL1 6 speed manual. Mine too had a 2nd gear grind on when cold. I switched to Amsoil Signature Series and no more grinding and it shifts so smooth, like butter. I’m hooked on your channel now that you got a 5th Gen Camaro manual 6 speed. Please keep this car, put a cam and other boot ons. These are awesome cars! 43:16
I have a 2015 2SS, manual. I bought used with 10k miles, it looked brand new. They didn't do the cols air intake and it was stock, good sign. I have the Ls3 engine. Driving it on highways is so goddam fun. It just roars, that V8 is so damn fun. 4th gear 85mph, up hill it will roar to 100 😊and easily pass any car.. I am wondering 🤔 if 1 to 2 is rough now, I am going to pay more attention. Car has 48k now, should I change transmission fluid?
Most of the gm ford and dodge tr6060 transmissions had the same issue. I had mine done under warranty at about 5000 miles. The blocking rings between 1st and 2nd had to be replaced. If you baby it say under 3000 rpm it shifted no problem. Get on the throttle and it grinder every time. Haven't had that issue since and that was done in 2011.
Only thing wrong is the 2nd gear synchro. Because it's the gear most failed shift. The 2nd most abused synchro. Low miles lots of new nonowner drivers. There is some case damage that can show the same symptoms but this is missing the other signs. Confidence 90%. I got a cheaper set of sockets and pressed in my own super strong magnets into them for my own magnet set. I can still use the sockets though they are shallow. Some places it's very handy to have a set of magnet sockets so you don't drop them or have to reach. Reason is I could pull a full GM auto trans and transfer case on the bench in under 40 min. Fastest time is 37min. Fiddling wastes time. This trans should be on the bench on under 15 min. I miss working in the shop. I was disabled a few years back.
@@Shiftheads Been told many times I'd be a good teacher. I have a red card chefs ticket, many years in construction and near 20 years in rebuilding transmissions. interesting how the knowledge differences in trades make you a better problem solver. Trouble is by the time you gain the knowledge you are viewed as too old to be useful in any one industry. Add a disability and it's near impossible to find a spot you fit.
37:16 It still amazes me how you can clearly determine the difference between a master technician & novice. The sure amount of information in your head behind the “How & Why” in mechanics is fantastic. I really hope you’re able to pass along this talent and insatiable hunger for knowledge to your children. But hey if it don’t bleed over to them, just know you made at least one other enthusiast happy. Clearly I’m a nobody but appreciate you chief‼️‼️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I inherited my dad's 2011 Camaro SS RS when he passed three years ago. Right now it is sitting at 23000 miles. I gave it the Amsoil treatment this year!
Early 70's CHRYSLER TRUCKS USED ATF IN 3 SPEED MANUAL TRANNYS...NOISY...I CHANGED IT OUT & REPLACED OIL WITH 75W90 DIFF OIL...QUIET AND NOT ONE SHIFTER PROBLEM....SYNCHROS OPERATED PERFECTLY...
Moisture in the brake fluid does not affect feel or anything related to pressure transfer. water is just as good for pressure applications as oil (pressure transfer wise). The issue with water (moisture) in brake fluid is: 1, it changes the boil point of the fluid. 2. In cold climates it will freeze/become highly viscous and you can't get flow, 3, will cause rust to form internally
Yeah, by modifying the boiling point of the brake fluid it can cause vapor spots in the line, leading to spongy brake pedal feel and ultimately causing the brake to not engage totally
I watch your channel and am always in awe of your enthusiasm when tearing into something you're not familiar with. I'm always filled with anxiety when faced with something I haven't done before.
30:26 Those 3.45 diffs are strong and desirable for other auto zeta chassis cars that drag race. I have seen stock ones go 10s and when built properly they can handle 9 second passes. However the ZL1 diffs are stronger. I have made multiple 9 second passes on stock diff driveshaft and axles. 5th gens are great cars.
If you're interested in manual cars, I have a 2002 anniversary camaro 6 speed, 1993 camaro, 6 speed. Also have 1986 svo mustang, 1988 conquest tsi, 1988 lotus esprit, 1982 280zx, 1983 280zx. All manual and fir sale.
@herbiehusker1889 the conquest 55k original miles 15k , the lotus has a Chevy 350 motor 18500, the 93 camaro is modified but the 6 speed is grinding, new clutch 4500
I find it so amazing that Alex can get as excited as he does to take out a transmission and just dive in and figure out what is wrong with it and fix it DIY style. Boggles my mind. Seeing such a young man take this much interest and expert care of these vehicles he finds and buys that are in "not such great shape" is why I keep coming back for more. He is also awesome at showing what he is doing and explaining what he is doing. Thanks Alex, for all you do for us.
Hey Alex, definitely do the rear main seal on your new acquisition, you are right there, and also a New throw out bearing ?cheap insurance, I have owned a 5th. Gen from New and at 202k miles the throw out bearing finally let go. True story , maybe upgrade to a short throw HURST shifter if you are so inclined, can't wait for your TR6060 Adventure (syncro) it will be a fun watch 👍
Alex, I currently live in the area where this car is from! Initially from Chicago, and relocated to north west Arkansas about 3 years ago! From the looks of it, this car was never driven in the winter months.. we have ice / snow (not as much as Chicago), and still use salt; sand; and in rural areas we just scrape the red dirt roads and lay down gravel. GREAT FIND MAN! Keep up the great work!
Interesting that they use ATF in the manual trans. Double clutching will help get into 2nd if the syncro is going. If you're good at it, there's no grinding
When double clutching you have to match engine speed and vehicle speed to make smooth shifts. Like shifting a semi truck, or a non synchro transmission.
Wow Alex you are doing better and better! I already love all your videos, but now yoy even explain how things work before doing the job! Wow great work, great content, great editing, you are a great guy, keep it up!
I’ve always wanted one of these Camaros since the transformers movie came out when I was a kid, they were almost cheap before covid raised the prices back up
I always do while you're in there when I'm down to that point. Great note for new guys. I'm 76 and been a car guy since my 1st car, 1950 Ford V8 flatty, I changed out heads to merc heads (automatic 10hp). Love cars, trucks, and motorcycles.
I wager the new trans fluid will not fix transmission and grinding 1-2 gear shifts. I am guessing it is a clutch issue. BTW I was like 958 at 34 minutes after LSC uploaded this Camaro SS video to RU-vid. Love your informative and entertaining videos. I do miss Peter however. I hope he can make some automobile videos too.
I got a 15 SS with a manual trans. As well was having the same issues, went ahead & change the trans. Fluid as well as the Diff. Fluid. That seem to help my issue. But love this car, not really to many issues besides that. Now goes into 2nd without issue shift smoothly.
I have a 240k 5spd on my vw that grinds a lot. I put 1qt of Lucas oil trans fix in it and the rest 75w-90 every 30-40k and it completely removes any grinding
Yooo.. german 5th gen diver here, love seeing this car in your shop. The two key / two fob situatiuon is because some dude managed to turn off the ignition while driving ... WITH HIS KNEE ... due to this chevy did an official recall on the keys to get the key bit removed from the fob and replaced by these additional keys you have. There is a video on YT where a 2 meter guy managed to pull it off... but he had to move the seat all to the front.. its so silly...
That motor swap scam happened to @CleetusMcFarland with Ruby their auction corvette! Someone swapped a 4.8 into it then sent it through the auction! Saw another channel get scammed on a GT mustang, they swapped the coyote for a 4.6 and didn’t even complete the swap. It was sold as non running!
I absolutely love the pro-clip mount I got for my G8. I got my mom one for Christmas for her Camry and she loves hers. They cost more up front but after years of cheap universal mounts that fall apart after a few months I’d say ProClip is totally worth it
Little tip when synchros wear a bit and get grindy and you have ATF fuid in there-Step up to a 10w-30 or 10w-40 motor oil. The thicker fills in the worn space on the syncro and it will work smooth for quite a while plus it's not too thick like gear oil is so that it won't shift when cold.
You might want to invest in an Eastwood transmission table. It's like a regular workbench but you can move all of the fluid to the drain in the middle. That way it makes it less messy and you have a way to get the oil into the container. Looking forward to the next video.
Dr Pepper is my favorite Coke. Oh, and it is really, Coke. In the South, especially Georgia, all carbonated beverages are Cokes. No pops, no sodas, etc.
My favourite RU-vid channel by a long shot! It's so relaxing, down to earth and entertaining at the same time. I don't even own a car, I love the mechanics though. I guess I'm learning for some day in the future! Thanks Alex and Max for your awesome work!
2021 Camaro SS 1LE 6M My Dad had an 87 Iroc with the 5.7 when I was a kid. We only had it for a year, but we still talk about that car today. I hope my car is as memorable for my kids
I had a 69 Z/28 when I was 21, in 1970-74. After multiple clutch setups to find the right one... and, a lot of time under the car, handling a very heavy Lakewood bellhousing and the M-20 tranny, I had a clutch setup which is still in the car. The M-20 was a tough transmission and thank God it was aluminum and lightweight.
That dry and crusty clutch plate and dry main shaft of the transmission is the reason that the syncros gets worn out, because the clutch doesn't disengage properly. And that's why it doesn't grind when you shift slowly 👍 Actually I think there's a very big possibility that the transmission is OK and you just have to fix the clutch...
I had a '68 that someone had setup for the 1/4 mile but still Street legal. It was HORRIBLE on freeway driving. Sold it to my middle brother who wrecked it before he paid for it. Still has never paid for it. This was back in 1981.
I am so excited to see this car more. This gen of Camaro is my all time dream car. I will own one one day! I love everything about them. Interior, exterior, power, style, all of it! Fantastic find, Alex. Can't wait to see this finished and then see you enjoy it!
And I quote " original formula of Coca-Cola was given to us by aliens" You're frickin hilarious!!! The original formula of Coca-Cola had 9 mg of cocaine per glass! I bet that was one heck of a kick!!! 😮😊🤤 Those emojis are the three stages after consuming the original formula of Coca-Cola. 😂
35:18 There's a fun bookmark in this video. Yes, as a fellow Mid-Westerner, (Kansas) it is POP. My favorite is also Dr. Pepper. I grew up drinking Coke because my mom liked that. When I was 5 or 6 Dad brought home a case of Dr. Pepper (you remember the glass bottles we had to return to the grocery store, right?) and that was my favorite ever since.
You are one of the most entertaining car guys I've ever watched. I look forward to your videos and I definitely don't sit here trying to figure out the problems with the vehicles before you say it lol Keep buying these sketchy/vague auction vehicles! They way you describe sounds, pick through problems and explain the fix is easy for anyone to understand. And these are probably all things your viewers have dealt with at some point or another.
@legitStreetCars I love watching your videos. They have inspired me so much. I bought a 04 ford F150 5.4 L 3V that I’ve been working on trying to being back to life 💪 I’ve got her started but not the FTPS is causing my check engine light to come on. 😢 but at least I got her running haha
Comaro trans issues... by best man had an 69 RS auto that we put an M21 with vertigate in. I had to teach him how to drive manual. He hooked up the linkage wrong so it went 1 2 4 3 ... so that was 1 forward, 2 back, 3 back, then 4 forward. Took him a while before he fixed. good times!! Thanks for the memory.
The C.A.G.S .(Computer Aided Gear Selection system) back when I purchase my 1992 Corvette was added mostly to increase gas mileage to avoid the gas guzzler tax reducing the cost of the car. The earlier manual Corvettes didn't have the C.A.G.S . because they didn't have the low end torque and would stall out. It was good in the sense that it saved money when purchasing the car new (reducing MSRP) bad because it was annoying and dangerous in certain driving conditions. It only activated when taking off from a full stop slowly. First thing I eliminated after purchasing my Corvette. It actually activates an relay that pushes a rod into the transmission to physically block the 1 to 2 shift.
Hey LSC! couple notes/tips from a current 5th gen SS owner who battled all of the typical GM hydraulic issues - the early 2010-2012 TR6060 transmissions had crappy synchros that were revised at some point directly from Tremec. if you look into a trans rebuild look for carbon coated synchros since that was the fix directly from the factory - just like the 4th gen GMs, the 5th gen Camaros have hydraulic issues too. look into both the Tick Master Cylinder along with separate the clutch fluid from the brakes (since it shares one system). very easy mod is to buy a G8 clutch reservoir and plumb up the systems separately whenever you address the transmission -manual SS (and vettes too) sometimes will suffer from the clutch pedal "sticking to the floor". there was a factory TSB that upgraded the clutch return springs to the one off the Camaro ZL1. -when you do the cluch add a new OEM slave cylinder those will cook fairly easy on these cars. people also add a billet sleeve when replacing, keep that in mind for when you upgrade. hope these few notes helped, i've gone through pretty much every factory nightmare some of these cars have after 10 years of ownership lol
Alex. You`re the highlight of my Saturday evenings. This time it took a while to wach your flick because of Olympics and Bundesliga. I always save your vids for last like the best bits on my plate. Lots of love to you, family and Max from Germany and , thank you two. You and Max.
I have a LS3 M6 myself. 2nd gear grind is somewhat common with these cars. I changed out my fluid to a synthetic D4 ATF by redline with good results. Have my 1-4 shift tuned out after cam and headers install. Excited for the next video on this car! D1SC procharger install would be sick! Wanting to do that on mine, along with E85 conversion
The oil pan gasket on the LS engine, you have to do the Rear Main itplate first (you ussually replace the whole plate, I know at one point you couldnt get just the seal, maybe you can now, its been a minute since I hd to do one), and make sure you use a straight edge to make srue its flush on the bottom. Then put the oil pan on and then use a straight edge on the back where the tranny mounts and make sure the oil pan is FLUSH on the back, then torque down. The aluminium pans break easily, so do NOT hand tighten, final tight with a torque wrench to make sure its perfect and tightened perfect flat and not warped or snap an ear off the pan. Also, replace the Pickup ORING while in there too!!! Those are known to fail and suck to pull all the way apart just to do a pickup oring, lol.
Hey there Alex. Cannot believe you have been in the auto industry all these years and never internally repaired a manual trans.....yet you pull apart auto trans often.... I'm an 80 year old Australian mechanic, from my apprenticeship days I was doing exchange rebuilds on short blocks, heads, water pumps, transmissions, drive shafts, suspensions, brakes, working alongside senior mechanics and machinists until I got plenty of experience in most operations......Seems modern day is all about electrical and on and off fitting of assemblies.... Looking forward to your follow on video diving into the trans......
It's nice to roll the dice and come up winning. I have that trans in my C5. I wish I could pull mine out that easy. The rigid torque tube means you take half the car apart.
I have a Pro Clip holder in my Grand Cherokee. It also fits over the left center air vent. It doesn't interfere with the operation of the A/C, and keeps my phone really cool, even on a long trip while using navigation, and while charging the entire time.
Heyy Alex! Just an idea, that you might like too. When you finish a car, a POV drive section in the video could give us some insight what it's like to drive that car. Love your videos! Cheers!
No the mass airflow sensor the stock one you opened was probably the original when you install the after market intake tube on these newer cars camaro/ mustangs they have to have a mass air that matches the intake tube size for the extra air being taken in. They usually do require a tune afterwards
Tips. Use methylated spirits to do the first flush on brakes or a different lighter colour fluid so you can tell when clean fluid is coming out. If you’re using a vacuum bleeder remove the bleeders and fit a small O ring or thread tape or coat them in brake grease first to prevent air being sucked in instead of fluid being sucked out. For oil spills us wood or recycled paper kitty litter to soak them up , pour the sweepings on paper roll it into a log and use it to heat the fireplace.
Great as usual. FYI - You are expected to go through a few pair of gloves per day. Even per hour on a trans or engine job. I go through few just doing yard work on a Saturday. They’re cheap and effective. Just bite the bullet and change your gloves when they tear! (Not sponsored. Ha.)
