even before he was called Claude, people used to call him Fido until Rockstar confirmed his name was Claude. Fido is what Maria calls him a few times in the cutscenes.
He's called Fido because characters in the game called him it, notably Maria. Fido is a popular dog name, and he was called that because it was an analogy to Claude being an obedient dog that does what he's commanded to do by his masters without question
The construction worker also says, “Where’s my damn tools?” Lol. Me and my friend who work construction always say that to one another when we’re looking for any tool. Good memories
I agree. I bought a PS2 for that very reason. I was 17. My friend begged me to go over to his house because I was on the fence with buying the ps2. He wanted me to play GTA3 and Metal Gear when they launched for the PS2. I actually remember it being a cold and cloudy day. The feeling that game gave me was crazy. After Columbine and 9/11, I remember thinking, “Is this legal to do this in a game” …I loved it for that
Christmas 2001, I got a PS2 that came with Max Payne and GTA 3 included. Guessing my parents didn’t realise how violent games could be considering I was 11 years old at the time. 😂 Love going back every now and then to play these games though, the nostalgia hits different every time.
My dad didn't mind 4yo me committing gory murder in GTA Liberty City Stories, but grounded me when Toni said "fuck" And then like 10 years later he got mad at me when I cut off someone's head in Fallout 3
man how can this channel be so tiny, the content creator did a tremendous job at getting all sorts of info and also keeping his voice engaging, managed the watch the whole thing!
Maybe because he has 6 videos and the key to growing a channel is consistency and I’m 5 minutes in and it’s all just bitching about outdated game mechanics
The reason why these games were so big is because prior to 2001, we only had 3D platformers and we just got out the 16bit era playing shooters and platformers. So to play an open boxed game where you can platform and shoot was mind blowing bro. Its probably hard for you to see, but GTA 3 still feels new to me after playing sega throughout the 1990s
Can confirm. Unless you experienced the shift, it's hard to put into words what going from the biggest games being things like Banjo Kazooie, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy VII, or Goldeneye where, at most, you'd have a single hub world or map with segmented levels or just mission-by-mission progression, was like. Then comes GTA 3 where, yeah technically there were open world games before it, but not quite to that level of immersion and detail. There was no hub world, you were in THE world. Well, just a whole city but still that was wild. It also wasn't procedurally generated so it still wasn't the biggest map to date but the scale, density, variety and, most importantly, the feeling of liveliness and activity was unmatched at the time. And you can always tell when a game is big and groundbreaking because usually it spawns the term (blank) clone. Every open world driving/shooter game made afterwards was automatically labeled a GTA clone. That says a lot.
The real charm with this version is the rage-inflicted scratches on the DVD leaving to the PS2 having trouble streaming in textures as you'd drive around fast, yet all the invisible collision objects are still present.
GTA3 is by far my favorite game because it transformed gaming FOREVER. I played GTA2 and London 69 and loved those games. Little did I know what was coming.
The algo brought me here, it’s very rare for a small channel to keep me reeled in, let alone for more than 30 minutes! I look forward to Vice City, San Andreas and IV! You’re all over the place like my own head, which keeps me engaged. Subbed my dude!
I was 11 when I saw GTA3 the first time. It was also the first PS2 game I ever saw. It was 2002 in my cousins house and he started the game up, drove the starter car down the bridge and immediately ran over 5 pedestrians. Upon hearing the *squish* sound I laughed uncontrollably for about 5 straight minutes. When I regained my composure I had begun my decades long love for the PS2
@@talibong9518 It doesn't need to be planed. Most stories are not thought from beginning to the end. As long as it's not a retcon, I don't see a problem a story can't be build over time.
I like the way this guy narrates. He has this endearing almost neurotic charm to it instead of trying to emulate that plastic RU-vid documentarian style voice everyone seems to pass around. Great job on this video.
"I bought a PS2 to play GTA 3." This was me earlier this year. And just as you mentioned, I could play it via many different outlets. I wanted pure PS2 originality. I have been loving it!
My favorite thing about GTA3 is the dark gritty atmosphere. And the Definitive Edition basically ruined that by making it way too bright and cartoony which is still why I prefer the original. The original PC version also fixed some of the issues you had such as allowing free aim on all weapons
I know this game is dated now but when it was new it was mind blowing. I couldn't believe it. You got to figure that's why Vice city came out so quick. They knew and got better.
I played this in an electronics store when it came. I was 11 and my mind was blown. I got it for christmas, without memory card. So I had to play the first few missions over and over again.. Loved it, holds a special place in my heart!
Excellent overview with personality & lots of historical background information. As a GenX old fuck, by 2000 I was in my early 20's and thought I was done with video games. I mean we had an Atari 2600 in the house for everyone and the first console I asked for to be "mine" was an NES in 1986. I bought a Sega Genesis later on and got a PlayStation 1 after it had been out for a few years. I've always got the next generation consoles well after they've been out because by then they've had subsequent iterations released with bugs ironed out (the slim consoles, etc) and you can get the gens big AAA games used on disc or on PSN sales. In early 2002 I kept hearing talk of this "GTA 3" game from friends, etc. When I saw it in person I was blown away...it's really hard to get across how big of a leap the PS2 was. I defy people to stand 8 feet away from their big HDTV and tell the difference between a PS4 and a PS5 game...the differences are minute at best. Great review that made me remember the rage inducing futility of some of the GTA3 missions... I've still never beat it. Subbed and going to watch the Vice City review. Keep doing work brother...
Claude feels like a really evil, silent, psychotic, serial killer version of Mark zuckyberg. He also can not be reasoned with at all, which makes him even more horrifying.
Playing for the sake of an "academic" perspective is a POV I didn't consider and I definitely agree. You echoed a lot of the issues (yet appreciation) for the game that I had. Great video, man. Rooting for you to blow up soon.
I recently picked up the ... definite editions. There's something to be said about the convenience of checkpoints and a somewhat helpful mini map. That said, I played the hell out the original and I'll never forget the time I got my dad to buy a copy for me as a 16 year old. He acted like such an undercover cop that day.
The Map thing was never an issue really. This was the first of it's kind really, so you spent so much time free roaming before attempting most of the missions, so you soon got to know where 8balls shop was or Marco's bistro etc.
This was the first video I've watched from your channel and absolutely enjoyed the shit out of it. Loved your edits and sense of humor so very much, so on to the video on Vice City! Subscribed and can't wait to see more! :)
Why do people these days just assume that a game has to let you beat every single objective on your first run and that if you can't do it, it's somehow this huge issue? Do people actually like playing games anymore or do they just like filling in checklists?
I really enjoyed the humor, the edits, the commentary and the honest opinions lol. Great work here. Looking forward to more! Also, please consider picking up Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories on the PS2. You’re doing such a great job on these ones, it would be a crime for you to not play the Stories as well.
Imagine the pain I faced when I never knew I needed a memory card and I had to restart the whole game just to get bored and give up and commit war crimes......
Finally someone who isn't just shitting on gta 3, a year ago i also played it on my ps2 and it was enjoyable and not as bad as people make it out to be
Some things I want to comment on since I finished the game yesterday for the first time: 1) With the Espresso-2-Go mission the timer only starts if you destroy 1 stall. So what I did was find all stalls first so they are marked on the map and then destroy them 1 by 1. 2) The aiming problem you mentioned is not present on the PC version because it has free aim. (Yeah I played the PC version. I found the original GTA Complete Pack on a steam key reseller site for about 40 bucks which is relatively cheap if you take into account that these games are not available on steam anymore)
22:04 I used to play with normal aiming as a kid, my brothers both played inverted tho and I was tired of switching it back so I actually tried inverted and yeah… now I play inverted. I probably could switch back to normal, it only took me about an hour to get used to it, and funnily enough it was Halo that I decided to try it with so this Halo 2 clip hit home.
I always loved this game, its dark and gloomy atmosphere, whenever I am feeling that type of vibe, I always think of this game as a nice place to go to. still glad it is talked about in 2024 and this is a great video you made about it, keep up the good work~
I respect what you’ve done here. I have incredible memories of some of these old games, but with the way the controls were back then and how some missions were borderline impossible, it can be really, really hard to try to go back and replay them sometimes.
I like to play Vice City Stories (set in 1984), Vice City (set in 1986), San Andreas (set in 1992), Liberty City Stories (set in 1998), then "3" (set in 2001) and go back around.
I had to use a walkthrough for that espresso stand mission lol. Pro tip is to find MOST of them before you actually start destroying them before the timer starts
Man, you just unlocked a memory! FYI: We never used that map. We failed so many missions that we had the areas memorized 😅. Damn I feel old😅 This came out in my 11th or 12th grade year😬👴🏾
Fun fact you can play the whole thing in ios and android and let me tell you GTA 3 on ios is mad fun!! Since on mobile you can still buy the HD versions
For the race missions, if you touch the other cars with your car, the race automatically starts. So what i would do is speed past the start line, graze the car while driving past in order to trigger the race to start and have a running head start on everyone
As a kid, my cousin gifted me his PS1 with a chinese mod chip that allowed you to play burned CD‘s and stuff. Played GTA 2 for hours and around 6 years old I played GTA 3 on the PS2 at another cousins place and my mind was blown. I never got past the first few missions, so I restarted the game every time and just drove around Portland. GTA III‘s feeling and ambiance remains unmatched IMO.
I got GTA 3 in November 2001 just after the release. It blew my mind as a kid. I played GTA 1 with my friend and then I bought GTA 2 and was kinda disappointed it was still top down. But GTA 3 was revolutionary. Then I was hyped for Vice City and I’ve bought every GTA game since.
This game really forced you to learn the layout of the city. I remember consulting the paper map quite a bit, until I memorized where everything was. Back in the day when it came out, I think it was understood that the selling point was this big open world that felt alive and so all other mechanics, such as combat, were acceptable as being half baked. Nobody would expect a game to do everything well in those days; just get the main focus down and the rest was a bonus. It's amazing today what a little time capsule this game is. It's been many years since I played it, since I lost my PS2, but I remember it fondly. I think that checkpoints in GTA5 ruined the series, but I'll admit that letting you instantly start missions over is a nice addition for the "Definitive Edition". Hell, I'm 38 and I remember playing the original GTA a bit. I never got to own but it saw my cousin play it and friends rented it a few times. To me back then even GTA1 was amazing for its big city with all these people and cars and the free roam. Same with GTA2, so I remember the hype and amazement when 3 came out. I had so much fun in this and Vice City in particular just exploring the city looking for hidden weapons and packages.
As someone that has both the Originals and the Definitive Edition versions on consoles. I'd only recommend the original for the aesthetics, the soundtrack (If you have the original originals), and the vibes. The only one that holds up to modern standards is GTA San Andreas. I'd rather tell new players to get the Definitive Editions instead because, yeah the soundtrack got borked but the actual gameplay on consoles is better. GTA 3 DE actually has an in-game map. The latest patches fixed most of the issues, and the only game that ended up still suffering from the Definitive Edition woes is GTA San Andreas The Definitive Edition (that version still is a bit rough compared to the original) Either that, or get the original PC versions any way you can.
agree, when i was younger i hated the no checkpoints in old gta games (i also had first started witht he mobile editions and then gta 5) and only actually finished the 3d trilogy on the DE editions. Now got some cracked versions of the ogs on pc and just finished vice city, cant lie if it wasnt for nostalgia due to those old mobile ports i wouldnt have come back to them.
The first GTA I played when I was 6 years old back in the early 2000s that made me fall inlove with the GTA franchise. The only GTA I haven’t played yet is GTA 1 and GTA 5. Also about the Ped phrases, I thought when you said your favorite you were going to say “My mother’s my sister!”
You’ve probably already figured this out because this is a six month old video, but Claude is actually named Claude officially after San Andreas. Claude actually makes a cameo in San Andreas and Catalina actually calls him Claude. I’m sure you already knew that, but hey, I just gave you my contribution in a comment form lol
The in the Navy guy his dialogue is actually lyrics to the Village people song which he is referencing being a builder his other lines is you can sail the 7 seas another song is YMCA. Young Man. There's a place you can go etc
Great fxn video. Great fxn commentary !!! I had a laugh... " so ive decided to drive my car of the bridge in the water, weeeeeee .. Just do one more thing for me my brother. After that u gonna be a made man, just do this one last thing for me my guy but it turns out BETRAYAL " haha OMG. THAT IN THE NAVY EDIT WITH ARTHUR JUST KILLED ME. i love this!
Just found this video as I just played and got to 100% on GTA III in the last few days for the first time in my life (I played it a tiny bit when I was younger with cousins, but never more than an hour or two total). I’m also a huge fan of Rockstar and got my start with San Andreas back on Xbox, then have eagerly played the hell out of IV, RDR and V. Life got in the way and so it’s on my list to get to RDR2 at some point this year before GTA VI. That all said… holy hell you are an absolute trooper. I played the Definitive Edition and so many of the issues you experienced with controls and checkpoints have had major quality of life upgrades. I’m about to start Vice City. Can’t wait to come back and watch your vid after all is said and done for that one. *Edit* I got excited and made this comment before finishing the video so I didn’t get to the last few minutes. 😂 it’s interesting you commented on the moodiness because I was getting this weird nostalgia feeling this week that felt off and finally clicked that the original version was just *so* different visually.
The only defence I can make for GTA1 + 2 is that they are great party games you don't have to think about much. I'll say the same about them as I do for State of Emergency - controller passes to the right, joint to the left.
This game was incredible when it released but it was also very controversial. It was on the news with people showing concern for having such a realistic game being so violent. They showed clips of some of the worst things you could do in the game and made it out to be the worst thing on the planet. The visuals were damn good and the freedom the game gave you was quite impressive.
Liberty City and Vice City Stories are also on PS2 but not on PC nor Xbox Also GTA London 1969 was a bit better than the base game, London 1961 sucks though. I literally had the same experience with GTA1 base game though, gave up chapter 1 of san andrews Also GTA2 has a PS1 port its not as good but its mostly the same, again the PS2 is backwards compatible. I mean you can check pcgamingwiki on gta2 if you dont want to buy the ps1 disk, the pc version is better anyway. Also the in the navy npc is a reference to the Village People (they have song called In The Navy), hes dressed like a builder like one of the members, his other lines are "Young man" "there is no need to feel down" "there is a place you can go" which are reference to the hit song YMCA.
That’s awesome, I thought it might have something to do with the Village People song, didn’t even realize it was a construction worker saying it and yeah I was thinking of getting the ps1 versions of the first games but I can save those for later, obviously much more interested in the ps2 trilogy Also might check out VCS and LCS but probably not until later down the line, and copies of VCS on ps2 are surprisingly expensive. If I ever do get around to them, maybe I’ll go for the authentic experience again and play them on psp
@@ihavenothoughts The PS2 version of VCS has extra content in the form of extra stunt jumps and rampages, along with better controls. You could just cheaply mod the PS2 with one of those preinstalled freemcboot memory cards that are sold and either use the cheap gamestar network adapter with a SATA HDD to load games off the HDD for the fat ps2 or use the SMB/network share thing for the slim PS2 models since they have the network adapter built in, with ethernet connection unlike the gamestar since they cheaped that one out, but unlike the official sony one it uses sata hdd standard rather than ide, so you dont have to mod it if you want to use a hdd that isnt prehistoric. You can also the official sony adapter for ethernet with the fat models, but I think only Resident Evil Outbreak has fanmade servers that work so I dunno if its worth it.
I was 11 when I started playing GTA: Vice City Stories, the first Grand Theft Auto I ever played properly, and at 12 I started playing GTA IV and then episodes from Liberty city and I was also 16 as well when Grand Theft Auto 5 was released as well.
I still remember the first time i have played GTA3, i knew the earlier version but man, i was floored! Shooting a bazooka at a bus? Running down people in sidewalk? That was the wildest game ever! you should look up "state of emergency", another crazy rockstar game that would never be approved today, also "manhunt"..... :)
GTA 3 came out in 2001 on the playstation 2, i remember buying it at Blockbusters lol and was amazed by it, played it for hours and almost completed it years ago getting to 96 percent but it is hard to get to that point including all side missions, i have recently bought a copy having not played it for years
Now you can explore the rest of the gems on PS2. I highly recommend Max Payne 2, Tekken Tag, Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven, Disgaea, and Katamari Damacy. The PS2 is still my favorite system.
