Wait til you see the end of part 2 of the documentary and meet the little girl with "problems". I have rarely seen anything that ripped my heart out like that little girl. One of the most gripping effects I've ever experienced watching a video. It was brilliantly shot as well.

These people clearly have the work ethic to handle a legal job and they aren't working to become rich, they are working to make enough to provide for their families. If you had half a brain you would be able to tell what I suggested isn't a one sided thing, it benefits both parties. The locals are provided stable legal jobs. The land owner is provided with relatively low cost protection and care. This isn't handing things to people on a silver platter, it's finding a solution that works from a moral and economical standpoint. He's gonna have to hire people to care for his land anyways, why not give the jobs to people who know the lay of the land and need the income?

Jess Vagnar it's simply an idea, I'm in no way forcing the land owner to do anything and chances are he will never see this comment. Land needs protection especially if it's for ecological purposes, researchers need guides, land needs protection from illegal foresters, brush needs clearing during dry seasons to prevent fires, if trails are built they need to be maintained. Also if these people are willing to risk their lives from both the legality of this & the hazards that come with logging in order to support their families via hard labor then they clearly have work ethic. Yes this model has flaws but it is simply a theoretical model. But thank you for the debate practice.

+hannah If brush needed clearing what did the forests do before humans were clearing the brush? The evidence we have shows they were fine then ;) The land doesn't need protection. We use and abused the land for centuries, look at Pennsylvania, logged to the point where there were no more trees in most regions, now it's heavily forested again. Trails don't need to be built, and researchers don't need to go. Okay so let's say we do send researchers, congratulations, you just minimally employed 4 people out of the tens of thousands of loggers! What these people need is an education about how the ecological system they are living in work. Clear cut and razing doesn't work. Don't ban asbestos, don't ban mercury, let them work their way through those industrial stages of their nation. THEY DONT have a hard work ethic. They are taking the easy way out, they could easily invest in the proper mining equipment, they could easily selectively harvest the forest or do control brush burning. If you're not forcing the land owner to do anything, and you aren't forcing anyone else to do anything they've already chosen their path! There are no legal consequences from them mining. No one is being sent to jail, there is no money or anyone to enforce a fine, and their government can't afford to pay to house and feed them all in jail. This is similar to saying that Somali pirates are risking the legal consequences of piracy. They would get a better life in jail or a payout worth several lifetimes of money, their only risk is a defense force. No problem for the practice, I left some avenues for you to point out in the above. The solution that is most likely to work is two fold. Firstly deincentivize companies from buying the illegal products (mainly ineffective), and also educate the local population on sustainable forestry, mining, and farming practices (highly effective).

That is a great idea and everybody will gain.

I think the purpose of the video was not to endorse illegal mining or logging, but rather to get rid of the myth that the people who are doing these illegal acts are not doing it because they want to, but rather as a means of survival. Even if you put these people in jail, what would that really accomplish ina developing country? Not much. The point being made in the video is that the people living in these areas of extreme poverty need better economic alternatives to making a living, how else are they going to survive? Although I agree that there are alternative ways to make a living in the Amazon, it is not nearly that simple. Most people living in extreme poverty are unable to achieve a better standard of living for many, many reasons that are not easy to solve, as is what you seem to think. Since they live in an area of poverty to begin with, do you really think it is that easy to find other jobs that are economically viable? Not to mention that farming and agriculture also take up land and can lead to deforestation, plus requires a lot of knowledge, skill, and investment that people who don't have a background in farming may find risky to uptake. I don't know much about the economy in the Amazon, but I do know that it is not that easy to et out of poverty based off common sense. The medicinal properties of cocoa plants seem like an interesting prospect. However, that will naturally also require a lot of investment if it were made into a business. However, growing cocoa plantations on the forested land would just destroy it and defeat the purpose of the National Park. The purpose of the park is to conserve wildlife and nature.
