I bought a second hand Nova Phantom and found out what paragliding really was.

I have been flying a low EN A wing for about 3 years now and wanted to upgrade to a better wing. I found a second hand Nova Phantom online and decided that it I would buy it.
I found that it handled very well on the ground and came up in almost nil wind. Once up, it hung in the air and stayed up without pulling on the raisers.
This video is one I took of me flying at High and Over. I found a thermal low down and climbed out to 400m which is the highest I've been in England.
I found the Phantom was amazing in thermals and had very low sink as I flew into the valley. I am used to a glider sinking a lot quicker than this and I was very pleased to see how much of my height was preserved even on speed bar.
The thermals were a little rough and I felt sick while thermalling up. I was told at the end of the video that I would get used to the brakes and how to use them to even out the climb. If anyone wants to explain this in the comments please do.
Otherwise.... enjoy listening to me scream!

Love your visceral reactions to new feelings! Learning/practicing active piloting techniques will help smooth out your canopy movement in thermals (turbulence). Getting more comfortable with altitude and bumps comes with time. It is counter-intuitive but "more altitude = more safety"... the ground is the dangerous part.🤗 The learning journey never stops and flying just gets better and better. Have fun out there and fly safe!

Thanks 3 million for this video friend I bought this Wing I'm learning how to fly it it's a high-end be and I'm learning how to fly yet I don't get to start with the a so I get the thrill of victory and maybe a little agony of defeat. So I really love you and your new experience and how you're describing it but most of all people told me I might not be able to fly here but that looks like my river and my trees in my county about 15 miles from here. I'm 64 years old my mom and dad are dead. Not A lot of Hope and optimism available in my life. Hey there's about three bushels of in this video right now now thanks a lot.

I tried he phantom once at a testival. Not only can this wing fly better than the pilot, it is also telling the pilot about that fact all the time 😊 Before you realize you are in a thermal the wing already initiated the adequate curve.

I don't think there will be a phantom2. I talked to some guys at nova a few years ago and they said that they don't break even with that wing. They don't stock them but wait for several orders until they produce a batch. Basically it's a multicell version of the Ion4. And the niche is just too small: An expensive low-B with maxed-out performance.. People change to the Mentor instead. Haven't been flying a nova glider the last few years but they say that the ion has become quite an agile wing.
@philipv3098

@@intarsienschrankzwetschgen4224 they made a lot of prototypes. Hard to improve on phantom 1. I respect nova for not putting out a new wing if it hasn’t better performance than the old one. I know the guys as I live next to the headquarters. Phantom 2 should come out next year - at least that was the plan when I talked to them at St. Hilaire.

I am a beginning pilot just learning ground handling and I watch a lot of video and do a lot of math.(). What you were talking about is the active flying process. You pull down on the brakes a little tiny bit until you start to get the slack out of the lines. Then you will feel kind of a jerky pull as the edge of the wing senses all the different motions in the air under the wing.(). I have seen it referred to as stiffening up the trailing edge of the wing. If you ride the brakes it means you were too much in the brakes and the wing is dragging and storing too much air energy underneath. To much slack in the brake lines leaves you "flapping". You are sort of hitting everything in the air "raw" no cushion of compressible air under the wing trapped for a little bit of comfort. If you are flying at 50% brakes hanging under The canopy, and you put one hand up it can go into a spiral that is very difficult to get out of. That large amount of break combined with the slow speed cause the wing on the inside of the turn to stall, If you put up one hand. It's almost like that air contained is a thruster when released.

So the Phantom will likely be less pitch stable than your previous EN-A but you can do some exercises to practice cancelling both unwanted pitch and roll. As you are themaling you'll want to cancel both to keep the wing in sync with your own movement. You can regulate the pitch mostly with the outside brake, just applying more as the wing hunts in front of you, less as it comes back overhead or behind. You can cancel roll by regulating both. If you fly out the front of the thermal and the wing dives, you might need to catch the dive with both brakes. Are you an XC magazine subscriber? There's a good video on their website / youtube channel with Malin from Flyeo describing how to practice cancelling pitch and roll just while flying straight at first and then with some practice it will be easier to adapt that to thermalling. It's hard to describe just with words.

I love this... That you so much for the comment. I'm familiar with active flying... But only marginally. I can regulate wing movement when i make it do funny things in purpose like wing overs. I will certainly think about regulating flight while thermalling. Thanks again... Stellar comment!

Will share my experience with you. Never be scared of going high if there is no restriction with airspace. Height is your friend. My personal best is at Just over 3700 meters ASL, its very cold up there. After i got my license i immediately went on to a mid B wing and dont regret it, and now have been flying C wings for XC fights. I enjoyed this video as i could see that it put a smile on your face as this sport is meant to DO. Wish you many safe and wonderful flights.

I love you man and I'd never be scared of going any higher and my whole goal is to fly up under a cloud throw out a bag of corn starch and fly away before it starts raining from the condensation nuclei. There's nothing wrong with catching a lot altitude but don't fly into a cloud. The other thing I have heard about the desert Southwest is the ceiling is so high if you get sucked up in a cloud it's growing faster than you can fly out the side. I live in America and the ceiling here is 18,000 feet legally and I just don't think it's going to get enforced on me unless I got hit by an airplane and they're going to take pieces of me to court.

one of my early flights on a phantom took me to 10,040ft over Brevent, Chamonix. I was not prepared for that wearing a T shirt and fleece. ie not wind proof ! if was cold cold. Valley temp was 17c and then the warm air hit the snow line and up we went. 1400ft at one stage FFS. I even had gliders circling me with a glide ratio of 60 - 1 and there I was in the middle at 10-1 glide. been on the phantom for 8 years now. done a SIV with it also. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vCkvJFJg8ek.html

Big jump from an A to a Phantom....... Nice groundhadling, and I see you are trying to fly actively. I expect the guy on the Nova thermalling, that you flew straight at was shitting himself too!! Don't fly straight at people!! Approach the thermal like you would a roundabout in your car - at an angle so you can join them, rather than forcing that poor guy out and around you. H and O is rough, and the Phantom is easy to fly well - min sink/max glide are both hands up. Enjoy your new toy, and don't fly straight at people.

I've just done my first two weeks club pilot course and I wasn't allowed fly with others around me. Seeing that other glider give way to his left rather than his right would have scared me more than gaining loads of height I think. Having said that and watching the video many times, the other glider had time to keep turning to his right but what do I know - next to nothing right now. At the moment I'm trying to decide what my first glider is going to be - an A or A+ ?
@jacquecilliers
@jacquecilliers Год назад
I think we all make concessions in the air and it is up to all of us to avoid collisions, which happened on the day. I may not have been flying by the book, but he was able to make adjustments and I have learned from this experience. As for gliders, have you asked a coach for advice? Someone who knows your flying ability?

@@jacquecilliers good stuff. You tube is filled up with paragliders ignoring the danger and pretending they have no fear. Maybe you can do the opposite and give a real life perspective: what the hell am I doing 1000 feet in the air drifting around on a glorified garbage bag? This is insane. And a reserve chute isn't going to help if your "wing" collapses below 500 feet. The human body isn't at all designed for falling from above 10 feet.
