Old golf is from an era when diesels were bullet proof and would run forever unlike the fragile common rail stuff we buy today that are overloaded sensors and gizmos in the search for performance and refinement.
That other person might have said what they did, but not everyone knows that these older diesels are better than the newer guffins, with that points you made. SO it still needs to be said, so more can know about it. Rather go for one of these older ones myself, than a newer one that could pack up at a moment's notice with all that unessicary technology & whatnot
This country was full of them vans ! We had a 1986 mk2 Golf van with 324k on her ! Absolute tank and very long lived! There is still one around our area in Co Galway with the same family from new - she is 1989 and never was restored in her life - Still going strong ! Great save !
I have a mk1 Golf that's been laid up in a garage since 2009 . Started it up in the spring of this year on the 3rd turn of the key . Now being recommissioned .These old VW s are incredible cars ! Great video, watched with great interest . Many thanks
That's why I have had Vw's all my life since 1987. 35 years of reliable motoring and some of them were from the 50's and 60's. One was a 56 beetle barn find having been stored for 27 years. It started with fresh battery and fuel.
Looks like someone's swapped it to a TD out of a Mk3, and done a nice job of it. Reminds me of the sort of thing we were doing all the time about 15 years ago. Trailer? We'd have just booked it in for MOT and gone for it! :)
Can't wait until you get the restoration videos up. Congrats on the new VW...she gonna fly with the new life you give her. Look forward to seeing her shine again. Stay safe!
Great Job Colin and Alex . Now looking forward to ," The bearded restorer " , that's going to be fun . ( A bag of wet water . lol ) . PS; was that the Hindhead tunnel at the start ? . Will also check out , Alex's Channel . Stay safe Guys .
So so wish i could walk those grounds. Im an absolute VW fanatic nevermimd anything car related. Please put more videos up on each car as they get taken out and especially more videos on the golf refurb
Colin, that tall plant with the reddish/green canes next to the passenger side is Japanese knotweed! You can spread it anywhere else you walk just by touching it! Nice golf though...
Love the "LOL" on Alex's Mercedes - That would look so cool on MY 2010 E63 AMG ! VW = World's most reliable car :) - All the best of luck with getting that Golf van back on the road - Great project man ! 👍
A testament to what golf mk3 and mk2 diesels are , good work horses with good strong engines . I have a mk3 1y engine estate , not fast not flashy but gets the job done. Love that van . When I got my fist mk3 1.8 golf that had been in a garage for 10 years it started second time and passed an mot the next day . I look forward to seeing updates on this one . How's the camper com8ng along ?.
Absolutely amazing that they both struck up, gonna be a great project. That rc car that was on the seat might be worth a bit of cash as well the market on older kits has exploded over the last couple of years.
When you save these cars do you keep them or sell them on? This is why your videos are fantastic because you really care about these abandoned Vehicles and when you are actually trying to save one makes it more special. Would love to see the car afterwards when you have mended it! Thank you for sharing and leaving the comments on!! 😊👌👍
Can't wait for next set of updates both on this and and the white on from year or so ago👌 good on yi Colin and that radio looks like a pull out unit flip bottom edge up and as it forms a handle give it a pull out (I maybe wrong but lol )
I think you should definitely put a bbs kit on it (not as rare and valuable as you may think) you can find a full genuine kit for around a grand but I believe there’s on marketplace for £450, I’ve just never seen a mk2 van with bbs kit and I think that would look wicked, it’s a thing I’ve always been tempted to do to my mk2, looking forward to more updates, good luck mate!!
Nice one lad theres a few vw gems there i hope some will get saved. Dan chambers has a mk2 golf van same colour on his channel, look forward to the progress on the van 👍
Those old Mk1 and Mk2 cast iron engines just go on for ever. I used to have a few Mk2 Golfs and a Passat GT with the 1.8i PB Petrol. Just awesome engines. Dated, but they just work and nothing really to go wrong on them.
Bloody heck. The golf started first try with some help from a help starter. But the newer Vauxhall needed a lot more help before it ticked over. That shows how well the Volkswagens were built back in the day.
Hi Colin brilliant video again fantastic that the vw started after not being run for 10 years I love how you enjoy your self and have a laugh keep up with your brilliant work and videos Bernard
Great work saving this look forward to seeing her come back to life , I have a MK2 GTi that's gone the same pink moping it only makes the shine last about 2 weeks then goes pink again as the single stage lacquer is dead
Hi Colin mk2 Golf brilliant car looking forward to seeing it being put back on the road also the bumper car might have originally been made in Shaw greater Manchester by Whittaker brothers.
I fuckin love you guys. You have a beautiful chance and great oportunity to save all that nice cars. I would like to have that chance in my life, but I don't have... I have my mk2 1988 1,3 KAT and that's it, that has to be enough for me. But maybe I'll also find that treasure one day, I really hope hehe But for now fingers crossed for your amazing work there! Keep going dudes! Best wisches from Poland!
I always wished you had the chance to restore one of the many cars you have seen on your videos, not sure if this was one in a video but brilliant that you have the chance to save these older cars. I did search for the other RU-vid channel, is it up yet or in the pipe lines? As for the Mercedes, I just sold my ml320 as it was not being used and it was a lot of car to be sitting idle.
Sturdy old beast, very very reliable, and nippy enough with the TD. By the way, the Combi is actually German engineering ( assembled in Portugal) too being an Opel with a different badge. But then, it is from an era when the previously very reliable Opels went wonky.
I had to sell my MK2 golf oak green 16v gti k-jet was gutted to let it go but time's were hard 😭. Still got my mk3 gti tho 👌 but she is away getting a full respray Great find and buy they run forever 👍👍
Love it! How cool it started after all that time!! Leave an Aston on the drive for a month and it’ll throw up a host of electrical gremlins and need to visit a garage 😂
Hi Colin great car rescue mate my dad worked at a transport company in the late 90s and the gaffers dad had I think was a F reg vw golf van diesel went out in it a few times
A red VW Golf? What about that ultrarare red Volvo 850R that you found a couple of weeks ago....would be cool if u went back and got some more footage of that gorgoeus thing, just for the Volvo fans 😎😎 Even better if someone would go and rescue the damn thing!
Love your videos especially of old cars .. would be good if you do more starting off old cars that have not moved for years.. would make for some interesting videos. The combo obviously had some running issues which is why it was parked . And the 1.3 engine that's in the combo are not the best as its a fiat engine . If it had the 1.7 engine in it would of fired... Good luck with the vw
Great cars, have a mk2 syncro which is the car we use when everything else is broken. 385k klms, leave it for a month and still starts first turn of the key.
Great find Colin I hope the restoration goes well looks like there a bit of rust underneath at the back.I had a Mk2 Mars Red Golf 1300 back in in the day great car far superior than the Escorts and Astras of the time. I must say though that it wasn’t as nice to drive and didn’t handle as well the Mk1 Golf I owned. 👍😎
I had to laugh when you said "i'll get a new door seal" those seals are obsolete and have been for quite awhile. When it comes to mechanical diesel vehicles they usually have no issues starting after sitting for many years.
This reminds me so much of my red 1992 Mk2 Golf GTi big bumper 'jumbo' It's the best car I've ever owned. Took a hell of a beating (6500rpm gear changes everyday) and was super reliable❤
Uphere they've been used as "Post-Golf", delivery-Cars for the national Post. My sister in law had one. Diesel, one seat only, special seatbelt and realy without any option. Even the wipers without interval wiping or a rear wiper. You could get them if you made an offer by mail, highes bid got it. This way thousands were sold to privat people....her one had 43k km on the clock, no dents or scratches and she got it for 1650DM....
Lovely golf its running the bosch fuel pump so its capable of running on waste oil for even cheaper motoring take advantage of that once you get it back on the road 🤣🤣👌
Great video mate, don't bother with the mop you'd be wasting your time , you can polish the living daylights out of a red car , & it will look like new but a fortnight later it's all faded & jaded again, go for a repaint.
Fantastic work pal big v dub fan hopefully recommissioned it will look kool again those wheels look sweet to I'm big into restoration of vwt4 do you know if any of the transporters will be for sale
I've got a 1998 Ford explorer with literally a half million miles, daily driver! And a 1998 Expedition with 240,000 miles and it's stronger than ever. Daily driver also! I'm so happy for you to get the VW going! I know how it feels to revive an old one! That's stinky car you're smelling is the old gas!
Tbh colin older cars are stronger and last longer than new cars i love older cars new cars are all plastic these days in the 70s and 80s were built like tanks love this video colin 👌👌💯
Those wheels on it are some I've never seen b4 too Audi branded I see. I love your passion for VW just like I have, Vaux 0 VW 1 bomb proof MK2 can't wait to see you restore it
Hi Colin, you were on a recent video at an abandoned house with the guy who has the Rattarosa where there were in excess of 70 vehicles, he mentioned they were all for sale at the right price? I saw several Jeeps in the background - are they available and if so how do I make contact? Thanks
Definitely can't beat a volkswagen my wife drives a mk4 gti 1.8T it's almost on 200,000 miles and still drives like new Good luck with restoring the mk2 mate 👍
If the clear coat over the paint has gotten too thin from the sun oxidating the paint job you can't polish it back to its former shine which means that the vehicle needs to be COMPLETELY STRIPPED with ALL trim taken off so as to ensure a full and complete new paint with NO paint lines.
