I didn't really need a new lathe, but this Emco Maximat V10-P came up locally for the right price and in poor condition and I had to buy it, and breathe some new life into it. / craigsworkshop craigsworkshop.net
Hi Paul - Yes, I expect so :-) The Premo is a great lathe, slightly larger capacity and much heavier duty. Bigger castings, bearings, and triple the weight. But - I already love the little Emco. It's a bit filthy though - I will start with the rags and degreaser tonight! Cheers, Craig
Nice. I would do the same thing, no hesitation, but they rarely come up for sale in South Oz. Looks to be in good shape Craig. The dodgy switch gear appears to have been bypassed, but hopefully the gears are in good shape. Cliffs Shed has done a few videos on the same unit. Enjoy. I will look forward to some interesting adventures in Emco Land ;) Cheers Rob
None of us really NEED another lathe, but if it's in the budget there's always room for one more, lol! Looks like it's got good bones, even with the surface dirt and rust. Don't be surprised if you do keep both lathes, I have a machining buddy in the area with 5 lathes in total.
I've been very impressed with what I've seen so far. It's so easy to work on, and there are no nasty surprises, or hard to dismantle bits and bobs. Don't really need a manual even, this makes a nice change from the norm! :)
Hi Craig, Nice find, it will clean up well I'm sure. You will have to keep both lathes.. They are very different. The Emco is a light but precise machining tool, the other is for bigger cuts & heavier jobs. You may well get rid of the Premo first when you replace it with a Colchester or DS&G down the track when the workshop grows a bit! Wedge it in, you can do it!
Carl you have not tried to walk around in my workshop with a workpiece (of any size) in your hands.. and I just wedged in a 2m long cabinetry bench lol. I will do what I can though 😁😉
Now Craig, You have seen photos of my shop, You have Ooodles of room still! Lol! Bring on the new 60m X 50m shed with attached lean to for living in I say...
I love my little EMCO Compact 8, so I know that Maximat is going to be a sweet little beast of a lathe. The quality of EMCO products was amazing. I'm predicting the EMCO will win out and be the keeper unless capacity is the determining factor.
Hey, it's great to hear from another emco owner. So far, the lathe looks great. I have noticed some bad scoring in the tailstock taper though. I will talk about that in the next vid. You might just be right in your prediction!
@@CraigsWorkshop if you need any parts, I've ordered from this company and had parts shipped to the USA without any problems and quick turnaround. They have lots of hard to find parts. www.emcoshop.at/
Wow - I checked out the pictures and I am very impressed. Are you sure it's the same machine :-) Nice work. I hope to get somewhere close with my clean up job, but we'll see. Thanks, Craig
Very nice Craig, looking forward to more videos on that one 👍 How strange that we should both get new lathes and post videos on them on the same day. I think yours will be more useful though 😀 Cheers, Alan.
It did come with a table but not one that I found very impressive. More to the point there was no room in the workshop for the new table so it's temporarily living on my welding bench..
Yes the other lathe is three times the mass, very rigid, and I have it running very sweetly at the moment. I was going to go further with it, re-making the cross slide nut, possibly fitting a DRO and VFD and such, but we will see. At this stage I have to get both in clean and tuned up order before I can do any comparisons. Thanks Tony 👍
If you think NSW is a black hole try gumtree, machines4U or eBay for machines in Tas. No-one has ever even heard of machining let alone has any machines for sale!
Craig's Workshop For some reason most of the machines i see on ebay are in Victoria and to a lesser extent Queensland. When something does turn up in Tassie you will have to make sure Tommy doesn’t beat you to it 😂
Wow not jealous at all! 🙂 Looks to be in amazing condition. A decent clean up and that will look as good as new. It certainly doesn't look like it has had a hard life
Oooh. Le fanci. Just about to start putting my lathe back together. New motor arrived yesterday. Poor thing was in a fire. All the tags are gone. Gonna be fun.
Craig's Workshop I have no idea. I’ve got an inkling it was an Indian lathe. Was in a factory that belonged to my uncle. The moron set the place on fire and supposedly tied himself up in there like he had been kidnapped or something and miraculously escaped just as the security guard came racing up. 🙄. Featured on crime stoppers years ago. This is in Melbourne. My dad rescued the lathe and it’s sat in his garage in bits for years. I’ve finally got it out and stripped and checked. Apart from all the belts and knobs and tags burnt and melted, it’s ok. So it’s mostly rebuilt. Ready for belts and assembly. It wasn’t my uncle it was the tenant btw.
That's an awesome story :-) I would love to see the lathe when it's back together (and also the condition you got it in). If you feel like making a video or even a slideshow one day, I for one would watch it with interest. Cheers, Craig
So - the cleaning, will it be A) Brush of visible dirt, lube and use. B) Strip down, clean parts, reassemble, with new bearings and seals, lube and use C) Strip down, clean parts, scrape everything to spec, reassemble, with new bearings and seals lube and use ??
Wow, that actually looks like it would be fun to just clean up. Looks like a nice sturdy lathe with a lot of potential. I have two lathes as well, but when I saw a friend had a 6" Atlas, I offered to buy it on the spot (unsuccessfully I might add), so I kind of know where you are coming from, cheers!
The clean up is progressing but I had forgotten how much work it is to do a good job of it! I am enjoying it, but I will enjoy it more when it is done 😁 Cheers Craig
That has begun already Joe. I have started filming the stripdown and cleanup of the tailstock. Apron and carriage next probably. I might do this in the evenings when I can't make much noise with the woodwork bench build. Do folks want to see the cleanup in videos, or just want to see the finished job, after it's all clean and tidy?
Thanks Joe - I appreciate the advice and input. I have completed the tailstock and have started work on the compound and cross slide. Now my time is torn between the cleanup and the video editing. I think the quantity of hard drive space will decide the winner of that fight! Camera has been going nearly non stop. Cheers, Craig
I might. I don't want to promise anything because me and workshop todo lists have a patchy history :-D I am probably more likely to go for the thin leather bed guarding that Stefan and Robin both have.
It certainly does, but would you believe this is the cleanest lathe I have bought so far? The hercus 9A was filthy and looked like it had been buried in a field. The Premo MkIII was half as bad as that, and this Emco is about half as bad as the Premo was :-) I am pretty handy with solvent and a rag after all this practise.
@@CraigsWorkshop Well, from some videos from other people, I can certainly believe this isn't a record breaker when it comes to dirt levels by a long way. It looks like it would more or less start and be able to be used, just a bit of WD-40 (other spray lubricants are available) and a rag would make it looks quite good. Some more elbow grease and a bit of scotchbrite, and it'll be shiny enough.
Yes - I'll have it shining like a new pin. The dirt and any surface corrosion are minimal and will be easy to remove (Already tested on the worst looking area with scotchbrite and it comes up great). You won't recognise it from this footage to the next. :-)
@@CraigsWorkshop not much on my channel at the moment. I hope to change this when I fit out my new workshop. Thanks very much for taking the time and for subscribing. Dean.
Thank you Campbell. I love it already just from the teardown and cleanup! I have at least one more videos worth of restoring (motor and electrics to do still), and it has been put to one side to make time and space for some paying jobs, but I am itching to get back to the lathe and finish it off and test it out. Thank you for commenting, see you soon in a future video. Cheers, Craig
