I bought an Icom AH-705 and it is overdue for getting setup and getting used. So I finally had the time to unbox it and configure it in my parachute mobile pack to get it ready for use in the field.

I'm sure you figured it out after all this time, but I've heard the 705 is identical menu-wise to the 7300. There is an option for "Tune on PTT" that can be turned off if you don't want it. I've found having it on makes things really easy when changing bands. You just move to an open spot near where you want to be and click the PTT and it'll tune. Thanks for a great video about your terminal velocity gear!

The menus are not identical but they are very very very close to being. And no, I hadn't found the "Tune on PTT" yet. I really should sit down and read the owners manual on this radio. Thanks for the info.

I got a Xiegu 125 amp and a DX Commander for this radio and it is a beast! Super versatile and really gets out there with a 100 W amp. I mounted the antenna on my roof and I have about 1000 feet of radials spread out all over my roof and the thing works excellent. With one other VHF antenna and a duplexer and a long wire strung up through the trees and connected to my DX commander I can talk on all frequencies except for 160 m.

Great work. Now to test it on a jump. 73 de HI8O

That's the idea. I'm hoping to use it for oddball band stuff that I don't have an antenna cut for.

The link to wire from “Aaron makes keys”… There was no link in your description. Great video on an exceptional tuner. Thank you!

I thought he would have it for sale already but he is still getting the final details hammered out.

25 feet is the length for the Rybakov antenna, which uses a 4:1 UnUn. I've used the Rybakov plenty of times, including QRP with my 705 and mAT-705+ tuner. It works great and can work 6-40m and seems to perform best on 10-20m. And I have made that boo boo many times, since the mAT 705+ is RF sensing and it's easy to forget when jumping in between bands sometimes.

Now I need to dive down the Rybakov rabbit hole. Thanks Mike!

Why is 25 feet the length for a 4:1 though? Rybakov is a fisher /angler in Russian and the recommendations I've followed for my 4:1 were "Any wire length that is non resonant, like those shown above, will work with the 4:1 ratio. As an example, a 28-31 foot wire will typically allow 40 thru 10 meter coverage and a 43-50 foot wire will provide access to 80 thru 10 meters. Longer wire is always more efficient but is usually best kept under 300 feet as the characteristics of a Beverage antenna begin to show up beyond this length. Always keep the non- resonant length requirement in mind. The same counterpoise, radials or ground as described above for the 9:1 ratio is also required". (I don't think I can link it here).

@@HAMRADIODUDE In addition to the regular Rybakov, I’ve made mine a linked Rybakov too, which adds another 25 feet, making it 50 feet long. I did that to make it better for 40-80m. I did a few videos on it and even did QRP POTA activations with it on 60m and 80m. While I’ve used the 25’ Rybakov for 40m, it’s much better with the longer wire.

@@MikeN2MAK this makes sense then. Thanks. I thought you were saying that essentially it must be 25 ft. That threw me off and I was wondering if there was some kind of magic to it. I appreciate it

@@HAMRADIODUDE No problem. 25 feet also happens to be the length for a 3/8-wave on 20 meters, which has a lower takeoff angle for DX. The impedance for that should be around 200 Ohms too, which is is where the 4:1 UnUn comes in. Carlos is right, the Rybakov is a rabbit hole, LOL.
