You can't beat a C series volvo, Here in the uk we had some of those in the quarry industry and they ran circles around the newer series of volvo dumptrucks in wet ' muddy conditions. We had them with 15,000 hours on them and they where still going when they where sold, if you un do the catch for the radiator cover on the oil filter side you can lift it off and the there is a bolt that holds the radiator tight, undo that and the radiator will slide sideways and you can gain better access to the oil filter side of the engine. The fuel tank goes through and is under the radiator aswell, you will find the fuel gauge works off the bottom tank, your gear selector is wierd how it is marked, 1st gear is at the top of the selector nearest the dash, then 2nd then 3rd, the next one down is drive to use it in fully automatic, the next one down is neutral, then the furthest on down is reverse, your handbrake is of when the brake lever is pointinting upwards and on when it is pulled down, Put the gear lever up one place from the neutral it will then drive in all gears When it is in low range you should get roughly 20/ 22 mph and about 32 ish in high range, , i think if that light is on , on the right hand side you where looking at it has not gone into high range, Best wishes for 2022.
That's like the old Cat excavators here in the US, the people that aren't a huge company writing off brand new excavators every year will keep rebuilding the old ones because they're rock solid. We had a job where the guy doing demo had a late 90s cat 320 or something around that size with over 30k hours and he had put most of them on it.
Ha ha ha, so true man. Them and Cat 966G loading shovels!!!! How many have been on there ribs? I know of far too many. I’m not talking about crap operator’s. 25C’s with “quarry loads” in tight corners roll over.

@@breikowski yup. ran those things on an open gravel mine site. 10-11 minute round trips, wide open for all but 90-120 seconds of that. 1.75-2.25 GPH average. we topped off every 3 days (30-36hours) on average, probably could have gone more without much risk. much will depend on the overall engine/fuel system condition, sounds like a solid runner tho, so i'd imagine it'll be somewhere near that GPH range
Keep forgetting to comment on Diesel Creek's posts there's an old Fiat Allis dozer, a backhoe and a pan sitting in a field on route 949 at the junction of Roseville Seigel Rd. in Northwest PA south of Seigel PA can see it from the satellite view.
There are two diesel tanks, one behind the cab and one underneath the radiator (the whole piece holding the headlight). The gauge inside the cab shows the amount left in the 2nd tank, not the one behind the cab.
@@rawr51919 The top tank just funnels down to the bottom through that 2" pipe. No need to know how much is in the top tank from the cab, it only matters to the operation of the truck when the bottom tank starts getting low. The top tank is just extra volume.
These trucks are great even if they're old now. 6x6 works like a charm and they are robust and rugged for tough conditions. And you gotta love the sound from that straight six Volvo TD engine. Take out the muffler and it will sound even greater!
Looks like a pretty clean machine considering the year. Spend a few bucks on maintenance and fixing the little things and your good to go. Good used machine bought right will pay for itself in a hurry. Hope you have great luck with it.
We have an A25C with a different style shifter. Two things are to note from it. 1, unless the gas pedal is all the way up it will not let you shift from forward to reverse. 2, There is a potentiometer on the throttle pivot of the injection pump that controls when the transmission shifts.
There’s a big plug on top of the tranny on the rad side sometimes it gets dirty and losses connection and unplugging it a blowing it out with air will be enough to make it shift again but I’ll warn ya it’s a real bitch to get at even with the seat out and floor boards out. I’m not say that will fix your exact problem but it did on the 30 ton we had at our shop of that same vintage. Not sure if that helps but happy new year and can’t wait to see it on a job.
No A/C needed in a few minutes. Texas temp was 74 this morning and it's 43 now at 6:30pm. Low tonight of 22 is very cold for North Texas. Only a barbed wire fence holding it back. Get ready. Nice dump truck. You will have it in tip top shape in no time. Spray a little ArmorAll on the tires and slick it up. Happy New Year to you Chris.
Seeing as all the gauges aren't working, I would be looking for a common grounding problem. Should be an easy fix. Pretty rare for them ALL to be fried. Looks like a sweet purchase, good luck with it. Best regards from Indiana.
Awesome trucks. I've worked on these with over 20k hours and still reliable tools. Second fuel tank is in the front wing. Radiator moves for maintenance. Tipper cables were a crap job on landfill sites! There's a slack adjuster on the handbrake from memory. You'll be pleased as punch with her when you get her to job and use it. Only thing better than a 25c is a fleet of 25c's! Great content, brought back some find memories. Ps first click is auto and counts down gears as you push forward. Put it in auto and heel to the steel!
Hey Mr Chris, another good find that will be put to use. If its not too much of a hassle could you possibly explain how the dynamic between you and your uncle's company has changed? It is obvious you are working more and more on your own bid projects and am just curious how all that is going. Thanks for all the hard work and videos!
Yes I too have been wondering about that, mainly wondering about his health after the operation, and more of the work going your way, John will be working for you soon, happy new year from JCB land
I was wondering about that as well. I was in business with family and started branching off into different field solo and the family was extremely upset with me over it. Couple years later my brother left and took customers but none of them seemed to care then.
Happy New Year Chris. I think the lugs you ground off the fuel cap might have been the locking pins as I appears that the cap is a lockable one going by the presence of that lock barrel.
As others have said the main fuel tank is under the radiator with gravity feed from the one behind the cab. The tranny is an oddball of sorts for Volvo, it is a ZF trans which is a solid unit by all accounts and not volvo like most of their offroad trucks. A lot of things affect the shifting on these units as I have one and have had a few issues develop. The recommended oil change in the tranny is 500 hours so I would suggest you do that when you do your service. I bought a used service manual for mine and it has been a tremendous help in tracking down wiring issues and troubleshooting various issues. One thing a Volvo service guy told me to be careful about was to shut the engine down prior to turning the key switch to the off position. Something about turning the key off shuts off the voltage regulator in the alternator which could let spike voltage go through the system and he had seen it damage the trans ecu. When I 1st got mine I shut it down the same way that I saw you doing it but printed some signs and put in the cab as reminders.
That's great info on the shut down procedure !!! And logical given when it was designed ... and Chris didn't get the "Dealer Tour" or manual like he would have back in 1999 ... so cool to see everybody that knows this truck contribute !!!
Good info. I just bought a A25C in June and I sometimes get some overvoltage errors on my Contronix display that could be related to what you mentioned. Unfortunately my trans was toast. I have a reman on order and will change in the spring.....
When you check/clean all the ground wires. First get you a bottle of conductive anti-seeze. It's like regular anit-seeze but it has powdered copper in it. It makes for a very low impedance grounding which will make your electrical systems work much better. It also stops surface corrosion that will degrade the ground over time. Replacing the crimp on ring terminals with soldered ones will help on the gauge circuits too.
Chris, I've been watching your channel for about a month or so now and I'm kind of curious. You and your uncle have an excavation business, that has equipment purchased by the company. Are you looking to break out on your own? Is that why you're getting your own heavy equipment, or is it just that you like having your own fleet of big iron? My mom's older brother had an excavation company in Indiana until he retired. I never got to watch him work, so I never got to see how sensitive a touch he had. I did see you lift a water bottle with the bucket and thumb, which I thought was amazing. It's also really cool to see you clean off a shed or carport and hardly leave a mark in the dirt. My hat's off to you, sir. Well done!
He works for his uncles business. He also runs his own business when he gets time off. They also have a deal where if either needs equipment the other has they rent it out to each other same if John helps on one of Chris's jobs, he gets paid by Chris.
Chris I don't know if you are interested but I searched several sites and found several that have full service and repair manuals in pdf for 50 to 60 dollars for the haul truck. Of course logger wade may have one also. Just wanted to help if I could.
First thing I noticed was how good the tires looked, lol. Congrats on the new toy. You can download a .pdf file to your phone or pc of the Volvo a25c service manual from online, but it costs around $60. Could be useful.
Fuel is in the back where you done put fuel in, hydro fluid is in the front driver side bumper , also that other side hydro radiator should rotate on a pin so you can get to that side of the motor. If is not shifting in all gear is probably low on fluid. It should also run in low or high range with lockers on for 2x or 4x6 .
Happy new year Chris. Hope it's the best one yet. That truck is gonna be a great addition to your personal fleet. The right tool for the job can save a ton of money. I personally hate driving on road trucks on site using them like an off road dump. It hurts my existence because it's so hard on them.
I'm know expert but when I saw the rust on the bonnet, I thought it may have had a fire in the engine compartment, until you popped the bonnet and I saw where the turbo was, now I think the turbo may be running really hot. Might be a good idea to keep an eye on it.
Boys and their toys... congratulations on your newest acquisition. Wishing you and your family a blessed new year filled with peace, continued prosperity, good health and opportunities for happiness. Thanks for sharing this insightful video Chris.
Congrats on the new addition to your fleet. A full service will do it wonders. Getting things right under the dash panels would be a good early project. She seems solid overall. Like you said, it will pay for itself on just a couple decent size jobs.
A wise yet frugal investment Chris.... doubt you'll lose the farm working out the kinks on the "new2you" truck. That haul truck will save wear on the excavator, and help finish projects faster...a time and 💰 saver. 😉
I worked in a landfill that owned one just like this. The rest of the trucks there were Cats. The Volvo was my favorite one to drive and was by far the fastest. I would pass a Cat truck on every round.
Well. Last was Bouncing Betty, now we get to see Harvey the Haul truck. Should be a great addition once you get the bugs worked. The fact that you already have the work lined up for it to pay for itself is icing on the cake. Hope it works out really well for you. 👍😎😉
It may have been said in the comments already, but if I remember correctly your transmission shifter is labeled wrong. I thought Drive was the detent going forward after neutral and then down shifts each detent moving forward
Yeah you can get online and get a manual on it, these days you can get a manual for anything and just print it out! Looks good enough brother, you have to start somewhere and you know that Chris! Thanks for sharing brother, can’t wait to see you doing service on it!👌🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
If the compression fitting on the High Low range selector pops off again, go to the hardware store and they have a brass fitting that goes inside of the soft tubing so when you put the compression ferrule on it makes a tight fit and compresses the brass ferule against the inner and outer brass pieces, and replace the outer ferule if it comes off again.
i bet it did not pop off, how much you want to bet that was the way the owner had em rig it to keep them going very slow, bad mountains , bet they find the linkage has been messed with also, but just to slow it down, we bought a lot out of west Virginia thru auctions after Obama shut the mines down. bet half were jury rigged to have em governed out, it was just pulled out and hooked back up so they went a step further, i know you think i am nuts, but for safety they were doing it. and good ol boys were slipping em back together, the guy we got them for was the one who said that's what they were up to, first i thought what a strange defect.
Hi Chris. We are ALL excited and happy for you! What a great addition to your work force. This will greatly increase your productivity on your jobs. Praying for you, and all the best for you in this new year! Blessings Sincerely Ed from Chicago
Looks great. I am sure you can get some good videos going over this truck and getting it back into shape. You might consider downloading the service manual for the truck. Seems like it would be worth the small cost. All the best to you in 2022!
Hi man, awesome work. First thing you need to do is put wider tyres on her. The A25c is VERY VERY top heavy!!!!! I know you will shake your head at this comment, but as someone that has put several C’s on there ribs….. It will be better on the softer ground. Any hooo well done on the growing fleet. She’s not seeing the road speed at that’s why she’s not going higher than 2nd gear.
Chris looks like a nice truck, with a little fixing up. I hope it all goes well fixing her up. How's Betty coming along?? Sad you didn't get that scraper pan though!!!!
I dig the cage on the back window. stops run away riff-raff coming in the cab with ya. you might want to cut a little bit off that airline compression fitting. it may have a memory on it. an indentation. Did you verify the hi-low actuator was changing positions? It may be limited to 3 gears in low and the rest in high mode. Man, it would be fun troubleshooting, doing fresh service of all fluids and filters. Hard to imagine the money it takes to keep that stuff in top-notch running condition. The repacking of the turning cylinders looks very difficult and time-consuming. If you need a driver just hollar! Happy New Year, Chris & Cheers from Louisiana.
Toured a coal mine in eastern Kentucky. They said on guy's main job was to keep overburden debris cleaned off the haul roads. A basket ball size rock could destroy a tire on one of their giant dump trucks and cost 30 grand to replace. They also had a spray truck that would spray the roads in the dry summer to keep the dust down.
You need an Owners Manual for that haul truck - ask your Volvo sales buddy if he will get you a copy. No problem with loading with Ol` Betty after you get the recent repairs made to her.
You better get the ac fixed because that sob will be like an oven in the summer. The radiator cover comes off then the radiator will swing out to get to the motor on that side. The way the gear shift is labeled is wrong. Where it says first it should say drive for fully automatic then there is 3rd next then 2nd then 1st at the top. The fuel tank goes all the way to the side you stand on where the radiator is. It's a very large tank. It's just like the hydraulic tank on the other side but it runs across the back of the cab too.
An old boss to me over in Sweden always changed the tires 2 and 2 and put the new ones on the tractor and moved the worst set to the back, he got the most life out of them that way. Had it in a mine that crushed rock to gravel so it was heavily loaded all the time 🤭
Yip, totally agree. New tyres for the front to be sure you get front end grip to turn. Crapiest tyres on the very back because they get dragged when you turn.
Chris: Once you get all the buttons, lights, gauges, etc., figured out, draw up a full-size plan of what labels you need. Take it to a trophy shop. They can make those two-toned plastic labels for you. Thanks for the video, and enjoy your hew toy. Jon
Congratulations brother I like her. One of the first things I do when I buy something is order a manual, normally a shop manual. It would definitely be worth the investment.
You might want to push the plastic tubing through the brass feral a little more? the tube should stick out past the feral about 1/4 inch or more, to go into the seat, for a good seal. On that hi/lo air line.
Since all the electrical gauges are out, the first thing I'd trace is the ground. 90% of all DC problems are poor grounds. Is the shifting for 3rd and 4th electric or mechanical? If electric, check the ground. All things considered, it looks like you got a good truck for what you need it for.
A great addition to the fleet Chris! ...Just common wear & tear!...She's a beauty! Just a few repair's here & there!....A must have with earth moving! ..We will all be watching for up-date's ✔ 😎
Hi Garry, how are you doing. I hope this new year brings happiness, prosperity, love, and peace all over the world. I'm looking for new friend so if you don't mind, nice to meet you.
One notch forward from neutral is Drive. Then as you go forward with the shifter its 3rd 2nd 1st is all the way forward. Also they have a boost pressure sensor that also contributes to shifting somehow. We have atleast a dozen a35c trucks most all ive seen with over 20,000 hours. They will knock your kidneys out but other than electrical issues they seem to run and work forever.
I would say, from all the years watching you now Chris, that you will , come Monday have your "Service Guy" on it, to start getting everything fixed on it... It does start right up , and sounds like it runs really smooth, just a lot of this and that to get everything back up to par on it !! And those of us that has been watching you for a long time now, We know that you like all your "Machines" to run and work as they should !! And this one will as well, I'm pretty sure of it, I'm sure your OCD is in high gear right now on getting it fixed...lololol... I think it's awesome Chris !! Congrats !! On yet another machine added to your growing fleet. I would think that your Unk John ain't to far off from retiring, and you have to get everything into place to continue on !! Great as always Man !! Happy New Year !! have a Great Evening, and, On too the Next !!
Hi Michael, how are you doing. I hope this new year brings happiness, prosperity, love, and peace all over the world. I'm looking for new friend so if you don't mind, nice to meet you.
Chris that looks like a great addition to you equipment. I am sure you will give it the tender loving care it needs like you do all of your other equipment. Thank you for sharing it with us. I hope the New Year will be a very good year for you and I will look forward to more of your very interesting videos. Again Thank You for your time putting together the different videos which are very enjoyable to watch.
@Andy The name is Betty, I think Jane would be a good name or Bob if he prefers to make it a boy truck, first he referred to it as a Bad boy ,then he calls it an old girl, so I think jane or bob is my offering for a name.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from me to you and your family hope you had a beautiful Christmas and New Year ...LOVE watching your videos, God Bless...
Not a bad truck. At least you bought it now and you should have winter wet days to piddle with it and fix a lot of the small stuff. And while at it may as well go ahead and make the AC blow cold air. Hopefully it's just something simple with the transmission shifting.
Congrats Man you'll have her shining in no time! 💪🏼 Sight unseen is scary stuff I did it once and got burnt cuz Dirt Perfect says "if I'm willing to buy it sight unseen so is someone else"!! Haha
Seems like you did get a bit lucky with the truck, must be a reasonably new air compressor as well, they're known for passing a lot of oil when they're worn or the filters are blocked (and a lot of water even when they're not lol). Park brake valve is a common part Volvo use on everything (cabovers, buses etc) so should be easy to replace, depending on what transmission is in it could be an electrical issue with not shifting into higher gears, the ZF's from that era can have solenoids go bad leaving you with only 1st and 2nd (or 3rd as well) but no overdrive.
Happy New Year!! Just like the Volvo I used to drive. Just found some pics I took of the one I drove back in 2008-2010. I'm really guessing here, but I think, for High-Range, put it in 4th and the truck will shift through the gears. Low-Range you can pick the gear, and if you choose 3rd, it will shift through 1 and 2. But if you're running loaded, you want to be in 1st to start in Low Range. Those A25c Volvo are workhorses. I think that fuel cap is after-market, I don't recall the one I ran having one like that, no locking cap. I also ran a Moxy, didn't like it, was too tippy, and then a Terex.
Nice find. It's hard to find good used equipment in my area anything reasonably priced is so beat it ain't with it. But that truck of yours really looks like you could make into a nice truck that will last as long as you want
The A25c was a good dump truck in the day many hrs spent on one that will do you proud once it has the Chris touches done to her 👍 happy new year aswell
Gotta admire Chris's wisdom here. Don't overspend or overbudget on new machine unless you are a huge fleet with huge writeoffs. This needs some TLC and will pay for itself in a job or two. Can't say that for a new version. Good luck and look forward more videos of your work! Also, you think you will get something inbetween the 220 and the 160?
As long as it works good who cares what it looks like. It starts right up.like that its worth whatever you paid for it. It has probably 15,000.00 in tires alone
Awesome. Happy for you. I know you'll get it fixed and may use it more than you plan to. Just opens the opportunities for you. Doesn't matter what it looks like, even new things get scratched, dirty, lose paint, and need maintenance. As long as it does its job thats all that matters. Better for you to save money and make money than look pretty. You have a good reputation as far as I'm concerned you shouldn't have to worry about looking pretty.
Little bit here and a little bit there and pretty soon the hauler will be working just the way it is suppose to, in the mean time it looks as if it will get done what you want it to until you get all those little bits done. Congrats on the acquisition young man.
If your bed has a float Option, put it in that and try shifting through gears. I know the old cat d400s if you don’t have it in float or the bed all the way down, it won’t come out of a certain gear.
