I bought an old Ford Tractor! Let's cold start it and plow some snow! - Vice Grip Garage EP58

I needed a hand around the shop. So naturally, I just bought a tractor instead of paying someone to help. I found a really cool old ford 9n south of town and had to have it. It's got a full hydraulic loader, working 3 point with a blade, and she even has high low! It was left in a tree row, and we fought pretty well to get it home. Let's see if it will start, and put it work plowing some snow!

Love the tractor! Have had many N series. Loved them all. 8n started production in 1948 (hence the 8 in the name) and the 8n had the small bolt pattern on the rear wheels. That's probably a mid 40s 2N. The 9n started in 1939, and the 2N started in 1942. The 8N ran from 1948 to 1952. So with a 2N or 9N rear and front wheels, and an 8N engine block, I'm guessing someone swapped engines? I see it has the Sherman over/under drive, which is pretty uncommon, so no matter which it originally was, I'd say a guy got a darn good tractor! My guess is a 2n swapped with a 8N engine. Keep up the great videos. By far the best channel on youtube right now!

I had a '53 Golden Jubilee...worked that think from dusk til dawn for years. The carb is fickle and needs adjustment throughout the day as she gets hot. Dad would always get on me about "monkey-ing with the carb", but you could make small adjustments and keep the power up all day.

My dad showed me a way to take up the strap slack. Leave a 4 inch or so hole in the center, and wrap it up in a circle. Leave a foot or two before you get to the rachet, and run the remaining slack through the center. Since it will be doubled over on itself, you flip it around the coil, and pull tight, it will keep it from unravelling. There's some videos on youtube of this method, it's a game changer!

A little water going into a hot engine flashes to steam, cools the internals, frees up the carbon deposits, and makes more power. They do it intentionally in high performance diesels for race applications. It's not the best for the fuel system and carb itself, and too much will corrode the cylinders, but since he mixed in some HEET in there, the methanol will scavenge up the water and it'll pass right on through.

Love your vid of the Ford 9N, actually all your vids that I have seen are great! I used to have a Ford NAA tractor. It was the love child of the 8N and 9N. As soon as I used it for plowing the garden, all of a 30' run, I hit a submerged fence post and broke the ring and pinion. It took me most of the summer working weekends on it to get it fixed. As far as I know it is still running and was a fine tractor. Two things to mention. 1) be careful if you use the PTO with a device that has kinetic energy built up from running as when you go to stop you won't be able too because the kinetic energy from your device will back feed into the PTO and keep you moving. Get a free running clutch for your PTO. 2) My NAA it had a positive ground for the electrical. It looks as though yours have been changed. Also try running the choke closed a hair and you won't have the stalling problem. Have Fun...

I got a 1952 8N tractor that I keep outside, and tarp over to keep rain and snow off it. When I crank it up in the dead of winter in Michigan, it starts like it has electronic ignition, but it doesn't. I does have a 12 volt system though. I have the exact 6 foot slider type snow plow that you pull behind. I bought it new, and the salesman said it's made in Italy. I wax the blade to get the snow to not stick to it. I don't have a front bucket though. If the snow gets too high, I abandon the tractor, and get out the Sears Craftsman snow thrower. Now that maching can handle a 24 inch depth of snow whereas the Ford tractor cannot with just a pull behind blade. But we also have the capability to rotate the blade 180 degrees, and push snow out of the way by just driving bachwards.

I used to have a Ferguson TO-20, virtually the same tractor, except for the continental motor and positive British electrics. My fuel tank was full of crap too. Had it hot tanked after a couple dozen cans of brake clean lol! Cleaned and rebuilt the carb and replaced points and plugs with wires. Then she ran great, all 23hp!

63 was a vintage year for those sparkalaters....fine taste and aroma. That tractor looks like the one Bill Elliot won the last race at the Richmond fairgrounds.

A friend of mine overhauled an 8 N years ago. We put it on a dyno and it pulled a whopping 16 H.P. at the PTO! Enough to pull the mower he had on it.

If you lose traction on any of the old fords just raise the rear hydraulics up a touch. Doesn’t take much, but puts more weight on the rear tires instead of your plow or whatever you’re running sitting straight on the ground taking weight off the tires. I have a ‘58 801 power master that’s been in my family since it was new! Have to do that frequently when brush hogging with her.

I can listen to your one-liners all day! Got a new rim I didn't notice, that's nice. The wiring is, you know, it's completely trashed. There's zip ties everywhere and nothing is the right gauge and there's Walmart fittings. So...I'm gonna leave that - cuz that's fine. So, you know it's gonna do wheelies...I like that.

My Folks had an old Ford Ferguson Tractor just like that one in 1946 perfect for their Truck Farm operation......My Dad and I worked on that engine for lots of years before he Retired. the 4 cylinder engine was a simple engine very easy to maintain we probably exchanged every accessory from Carb to starter and "Generator" and never overhauled the engine just changed plugs and Oil every couple of months when it got dirty....I'd like to see you go thru that engine and really get it running good and reliable it shouldn't take long.

Never a bad decision to buy an old tractor! NEVER! I got a '61 Oliver 550, which is basically Oliver's rendition of the Ford N series. It even has a freeman loader on mine too. At least that looks like a Freeman loader there. I use the hell out of it for plowing snow down here in WI. I also plow my mini hobby farm plots with it and move firewood and pull trailers around and pull stuck vehicles out and all kinds of stuff. It's a great thing to have! Enjoy.

For the straps, you fold them up about 8 inches at a time (or whatever length you feel like that will get the job done) and tuck it into the ratchet handle so the last click holds it. If you made it too long or it's not holding tight, you can simply knot the ends together by putting the loop through the middle of the other loop and pull tight. If you do it right, you can even release the ratchet and keep the extra folded up for next time.

That tractor is like the one my grandfather had on the farm when I was a kid. He had it hooked up to propane rank mounted to the front that he refilled using an adapter to the tank he used to heat the house. He would let me ride over the engine with my legs hanging over the sides like riding a horse while he brush hogged…Lots of memories for me and eventually switched it back to running gas after he passed away. Thanks for the video Derek!

I'm getting addicted to your videos! I've got a Ford 8N with a six volt system and Walmart wiring. I've got to do some McGyvor (?) fixing on it so I can use it again. It's been 90+ degrees working in the sun and I get burned out at times. I have to put a starter drive on it and hope to convert it to 12 volts with alternator set up. Keep making videos! Lots of us love to watch you and your family turn swine into gold!

For Straps, Roll your straps up leaving about a foot from the ratchet with a hole in the middle about as wide as the strap, then fold that foot left over and poke it through the roll. The loop that's now poking out gets pulled over the roll and pulled tight. Bam Happy strappy

Roll the excess strap in a coil leaving a big enough hole in the centre at the size of the width of the strap, leave about a foot unrolled between your ratchet and the coil...then feed the left over strap through the hole in the middle and loop it over the coil, done! The coil will hang near your ratchet, do it a couple of times to work out the left over length to get it neat and tight. That’s how we do it in Oz, 🍻

I mowed a patch of grass on the farm with my great uncle's 1938 ford 9n tractor today, and I kid you not, this thing runs like a champ and starts right up the second you push the button, only has to pump one piston to get her going when she's warm, but she can be cold blooded if not started in a few days. As always, Great video!

One man comedy show and he's not acting - It beats me where he stores all this stuff, perhaps there's a scrap yard close to home. Here in England you would be pulled over in a second for driving some of those wrecks on the public highway, especially without insurance, brakes and most other safety features. Still, it all makes for good watching.
