I don't think obsolete is a good word for it. Nothing else will play PS3 games as well as the PS3 hardware. There is emulation through ps now through streaming, but there is inherent lag through streaming and a limited library. There is also rcsp3 which is awesome, but not fully compatible with all games plus emulation has lag. I still use my PS3 slim to play PS1 discs, PS3, 3d Blu rays, and downloaded PS1/PS2 classics/ps minis/ and turbo graphics. The launch PS3 also plays sacd. I used to use it more for media consumption like music and movies, but file type limitations and size has stopped me from using it for videos. I will have to check to see if the PS3 has a Plex app. I will never get rid of any of my ps3s. I bought a PS4 and like 4 of my 300 downloaded games transfered to the new system. I sold my PS4 pro not long after I got it.
@@haseoboi9433 in what way do you mean obsolete? In they way they are not making anymore, yes, or in the way that the PS5 can play PS4 games, also yes. The PS3 is no longer sold, but there is not a perfect way to bring your games into the new generation. The games are still fun. Heck I still play my original Nintendo. The PS3 still has plenty of draw for me still as I posted above.
I sometimes wonder where my PS5 will end up. In a thrift store? Selling for 50 on ebay in 5 years time? Selling as a collectors item in 20 years time because its the launch version with PS4 backwards compatibility? (Maybe they remove backwards compatibility on a slim version..) Though I am planning to just keep it forever. You never know.
@@Solidcancer07growing up I never thought I'd ever see the day when I'd find a PlayStation 3 in a thrift store but then eventually I started finding them and bought several of them in working condition. That being said while I do think at some point in the future we may see a PlayStation 5, I have my doubts on whether or not it's going to be in good working condition just because it seems that Sony it's becoming more comfortable banning consoles nowadays as some consoles may have been stolen.
I got a 60 gig model untested for 50 dollars. It hadn't been used since 2009. It had no dust and the warranty sticker was intact. The only problem was the disc drive was bad so I replaced it and it works perfectly. It's quite and I put a ssd in it.
@@igor1447 ur right but it does make a few of my games run better. In demon souls on the bridge after the first boss when the dragon would breath fire my ps3 frame rate would drop so low it looked like a PowerPoint but when I installed the ssd it ran so much smoother. The fps still dropped but it wasn't nowhere near as severe. Also games Install quicker.
@@igor1447 yea I agree. I haven't beat demon souls. I bought it and when I got this ps3 bc I love dark souls 1 and 3 and then they announced the remake for ps5 and I secured me a ps5 last Wednesday and will be delivered Thursday.
I always wonder how do previous owner get their consoles (or any other piece of equipment) in such bad shape? Like, I've owned MANY consoles throughout the years and the worst thing that happened to them was getting a little bit of dust.
Yeah that's a good question. Same with me, the worst they get is dust from sitting around and not being used. I guess people store them in dirty attics/garages maybe? Idk lol
the answer is usually kids or teens that don't really take care of their stuff. Some of my old handhelds and games that i got for christmas and birthdays as a child got also really beat up especially the stuff that i got together with my brother and we often fought about those things, dropped stuff, spilled out some juice on them and all those other things kids do lol .....
I sold my PS2 many moons ago much to my regret, I got a message back asking if I made a mistake, it was as "new" all packaging and paperwork, everything clean and packaged correctly, they thought I must have sent the wrong PS2, thinking they were getting a "used" one, even after playing final fantasy through several times and other games it was still in excellent condition. Sometimes think people are pigs when I start cleaning consoles, the PS4 I just cleaned was horrendous inside.
I’ve never found anything good at a thrift store, but I’ve found my old PS2 in a box with everything in it at my grandmas house. I dunno why my mom threw it away.
I found one of them on the back of a friends truck during a rainstorm,he was gonna toss it in the garbage.Asked if i could have it,took it home threw it in the tub...was already wet lol Long story short it was overheating and shutting down from all the grunge and crap in it,about 2 hours of cleaning re-pasting everything then an overnight drying session and reassembly it still works great 2 years ltr.
I got my 60GB CECHA01 from Goodwill a year and a half ago for a little over $100. Still works perfectly today. I've noticed it's getting progressively harder to get good deals from Goodwill though
I wish my country had a store like Goodwill... I've been trying to get a PS3 for myself for YEARS, but we got it too late in its life, and as such fat models are a mythical sight, super slims are the norm and cost more than slims, and overall the price is just absurd, half a salary for us. Not to mention no one has official controllers, ever. I want one that can have CFW installed, because yeah finding the thing is hard enough, let alone its games. I was so positive this year but the only store near me that has them for sale is a big scam and they charge you extra for it too.
@@LeotheJapaneseLion9890 Hello there. Do you know if Book Off can ship overseas? I keep hearing that importing from Japan or Australia is the cheaper option, so I may as well try it. And yes I still don't have the PS3.
I recently bought a ps4 from eBay, and it came with that Back To The Future game! That's a funny coincidence! I haven't played it yet, but it's apparently a telltale game too so it's probably a pretty good story game.
All PHAT Ps3 original model are wireless as standard. It was Microsoft that sold a wireless adapter for an extra $70. I still have my original 60gb day one release and it still works like a dream. I used to leave that console on for a month at a time back in the day while playing through a game. Never an issue. I did the same with my Ps4 pro and that was also fine until i got my electric bill then never done it again. Oh, and give it a clean, you'll feel better for putting in the extra effort and nobody likes a skanky seller.
No there was no built in Wi-Fi on the launch 20gb phat version with the black trim around the disc drive (notice no silver trim). It was considered the budget model
no, this one particular model is wired only, no wifi for the 20gb model but with bluetooth, this one is my preferred ps3 because of the all black color.
It’s the same thing for me I just got a ps3 backwards compatible and had a firmware update from 2014 and was last play in that year with saved date from 2007 to 2014 I can make a video on it over on nym other channel let me know if you’d be interested in that Jacob
same man i got this same model 2 weeks ago but its the Japanese version CECHB00 installed CFW on that boy and install many PS1 and PS2 games there and i install widescreen hacks to the PS2 ISO its look freaking good while in progressive mode too! im planning to clean it and replace the thermal paste too
Man. My 60gb, twice Yloded PS3 just sits in a cupboard. Wish i had the technical ability to change out the Nec/Tokins. Maybe someday i'll brave it lol.
Trust me you don't need a Ps3 for backwards compatibility those og Ps3 that have backwards compatibility are quite faulty and they use a lot more energy to play Ps1 and Ps2 games than a Ps2 slim it is way better to just buy a Ps2 slim for Ps2 and Ps1 games and play your Ps3 games on the better and way more energy efficient Ps3 slim versions. Also it is usually cheaper in most cases to buy a Ps3 slim plus a Ps2 slim than what some of those crazy people try to charge for their faulty backwards compatibe fat Ps3s
@@danhalo1405 they’re not all faulty. Have had mine since launch and have yet to experience any issues with it. I do regularly clean it though and have replaced the nec/TOKIN capacitors myself as a preemptive move. Next would be delidding it and replacing the paste under the IHS but I’m scared to do that myself and mine is still running pretty cool as it is. I have considered some of the aftermarket fans out there with more blade to move more air but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
Just buy a refurbished ps2 for $150 since they're ps1 compatible. OG ps2 comp ps3s are ticking time bombs and require some invasive hacks to "future proof it" even then it's not guaranteed.
@@nomadhomad3685 Thanks. I might save my money to get one. I got some games from a subscription box that were PS2 but we checked PS3, so i guess it assumed we had a backwards compatible one.
I thought I liked the Slim but ever since I got the Super Slim its my fav PS3! That retro/futuristic design grew on me. And you can be certain its the most reliable model after all the revisions and lesson learnt
yes super slim is best and most reliable v less likely get broken unlike fat most prone for ylod even slim also sometimes ylod but most of people criticise super slim the reason they give is they say it looks cheap plastic they don't see its the most reliable ps3 I also have 3 of super slim I play games in them everytime its awesome
@@rockykhan6338 Slim is the best version i got mine for 10 years and its still working and thats is the best hackable version of PS3 the super slim is not that hackable and looks cheap the first batch of fats are the best cuz of ps2 backwards compatibility
@@dxtremecaliber buddy I got 3 super slims all working flawless 2 of them I jailbreak myself didn't took me more than few minutes including multiman is easily installed ..I won't prefer original model with ps2 backwards compatibility it's no doubt best looking and having features but most prone to ylod super slim looking cheap plastic as I said this factor most of the people say while criticising it might not be looking good but it's v reliable but slim is v much better than original model ps3
it really drives me insane when peopel get consoles and stuff and never clean it before testing! Like that can be all that needed when powering on between it dying right there or living
I own 4 Fat PlayStation 3 consoles myself but unfortunately of the four that I have only two are backwards compatible with PS2 games and between those two one has the YLOD and a repair store said it can't be repaired while the other console actually turns on and works but even then I had to get it repaired and even after getting it repaired it only works for about an hour before it shut down on its own. As for the non backwards compatible ones one has the YLOD while the other one turns on only for the fans to start blowing like a jet engine within a minute. So needless to say I've not had the best luck getting a backwards compatible console.
Mine is the PS3 Super Slim 500GB Model which i still have today also have the limit edition Super Slim in Red very nice looking aswell i must say still use them from time to time but manily i am on the PS5 System alot i have the disc one very nice console THE BEST i have owned by a mile
Just found one in my garage that prob sat in storage for like 8 years. Such an easy console go restore and it's as good as new. Super quite and stays cool with some fresh thermal paste. Idk why it got so much hate. The super slim is the most simple and durable if you just want to play ps3 games
Bought mine there too a CECH-A01 its in like new condition Came with all cables And two controllers paid 200 awesome console Thinking about opening it and replacing the paste
Yeah I'd be interested in that PlayStation 3 60 gig because because my PS2 slim I had for 18 years finally crashed and got hot and overheated did you already sell that
Someone probably just lost the need for gaming or upgraded and never needed the old console. I personally can attest for this I work too much to game besides rarely so my old ps3 and Xbox 360 have been in retirement for 6 or 7 years.
Do not trust replace thermal paste yourself. What is needed is replacement of the thermal paste between CELL cpu and it's IHS. Removing IHS from the chip is very very risky. You should get it done. That will make your PS3 quiet. Replacing paste between IHS and heatsink will simply not do and will certainly not extend life of this console. I know what I am talking about. Good luck. Don't do it yourself.
@@candidosilva7755 that version of the ps3 he bought in good condition would be worth 300 dollars becuase that certain model version is rare at of all ps3s that look like that only some of them play ps2 games
You know idk what it is but I hate good will, I refuse to shop there. Just the though that theres people who think there stuff won’t sell so they just donate it to them, goodwill doesn’t even buy them off people, they are solely running there business off of free items they receive.what happened to them actually donating.
I don’t know why but i find myself playing my PS3 more than the others. I don’t have a ton of PS5 games and i think the constant updating and downloading on the PS4 annoys me.
I have the launch 60 gb and never got the yrod and looks as good as it did from day one. I don't know how the f**k people get their stuff this messed up?
In my experience, most controllers ps1 to ps3 end up with sticky thumbsticks if left for years.. They sweat .. Its nasty and is worse on heavily used controllers..
i got one of these, they are in demand mostly because of the backwards compatablity, i can't really sign in to psn, i think its just the account if you guys got one see if you can log in
I remember back in 2009 when my backcompat PS3 triggered the yellow light. This was shortly after the Gen2 released and they announced that they would not replace it with a backcompat model. Really sucked…
looks that it has been opened by forcing the lid without having to remove the warranty sticker, be careful! could be heated up to temp fix it and than sell to people, it will ylod again
I would be interested to buy the ps3 from you if you cleaned it and everything i have a cheche01 but it doesnt play all ps2 games sadly so i have been wanting a checha01
I went into GameStop about 7 years ago and wanted one of these, the only one they had was on display and they didn’t even know if it worked, but they plugged it in and it did I think I had it for a year before it yellow lighted on me
Hi Jacob, great video, I wonder if you can tell me please? Is my CECHB00 PS3 backwards compatible? If not I won't invest in restoring it. There are 4 USB ports present. Many thanks in advance, Rory.
I miss my OG PS3 😞 I remember to this day it stopped working whilst I was playing the 2010 Fifa World Cup game 😞 how comes moving forward the PS3 consoles couldn’t play PS2 games?
Because when Sony made the original ps3 consoles backwards compatible they upped the price of it to like 600£$ I belive and people were complaining about it so they took out the ps2 emulator of the later ps3 fat and sold without
Mine 60gb had YOLD but after some heat treatment and fan mod, works fine, already ..5 years...same as one my Xbox 360 with rrod. So it's not always a death sentence. U MUST change thermals and mid fan to keep it working. With Xbox, I installed additional 120mm intake cooler as well.
So there’s still possibility of a revive after ylod, that’s what I thought if you change the thermal paste for both cpus and possibly add a bigger fan. But I’m the video he said if they’re ylod they’re dead pretty much
