Don't feel too bad about that giveaway. hardly anyone actually enters a wn givey for the specific free book. Winning a givey also has the added bonus of giving discounted shipping in the event that you haven't purchased from that show yet. And if you want me to really be cynical. There is literally a whole underground community of givy goblins that just make accounts to win free stuff. So just think of it like; you winning ensured it went to a real person.
Before finding your RU-vid channel I have to say I didn't know much about comics but I'm learning fast thanks for reviving all are love in them more than before
You've got me picking up.dave Steven's stiff just got the space vixens 16 and the jungle comics 1 didn't realize how many I already had. Pick up foreign books alot just got a Italian conan #1 . Those grendel books are good stuff I've got that whole comico run . Jeff Wagner is the guy that does those
I buy a lot of bulk buys on eBay. I think I have a problem with bidding cus im competitive and hate to lose a bid 😂.but I've found I like spawn after getting a couple and the gunslinger comics, too. I now have about 1000 comics and just need to decide now what I want and what to sell. I'm thinking of whatnot because single selling on eBay is very long. But I want to do a xmen, x force, spawn gunslinger and idw tmnt run also love the tmnt and batman mash ups. Great video once again, Mike, and love the comics
It's funny on my comics book save for later from months ago I picked that same Johnny quest book but didn't know much about Dave Stevens at all so I might go back and pick it up since then I've watched the RU-vid video on him.
I didn’t know about Stevens’ Grendel work! I’m a few issues away from completing a full Grendel run. It’s an amazing comic book series by the genius, Matt Wagner.
Hulk: Grand Design is a retelling of the entire Hulk series in 2 issues. Jim Rugg condensed 50+ years of the Hulk into 2 issues. It's amazing. Marvel also did a Grand Design series for Xmen and FF.
I liked the LCS perusal of those awesome books. I also liked that Power Girl magazine cover. I am a Dave Stevens fanatic who discovered his art many years ago when I purchased my first Stevens comic book Planet Comics. The next book I purchased was that Jonny Quest #3 and I'm enjoying going down that rabbit hole to this day. Don't know if you know this but Dave Stevens inked some pages of Star Wars, Vol. 1 #6 from Marvel Comics uncredited. I do have some Italian Marvel comics which I do find interesting. Loved the books you got from Whatnot. Jim Rugg's Hulk is a great read and I highly recommend it. I have been buying from Whatnot since last year and have enjoyed the experience. Many sellers have their own niche and I have picked up great vintage as well as inexpensive new books. I have also won giveaways and you shouldn't feel bad about your first win which was amazing to do. Love your wall of awesomeness.
It’s funny, but you keep getting the same Dave Stevens books as me at around the same time! I just bought a copy of that Jonny Quest 5 on eBay recently. But the bigger Dave Stevens haul came from a comics store in Seattle that was having a 25% off sale. I got seven of his better known books, including Vanguard Illustrated #2. Had to go through many thousands of boxes of comics before finding that one, though. Thankfully, the other six were already in a separate box that the owner showed me.
That jim rugg Hulk Grand Design, I believe, is from one of the kayfabe from youtube. I catch their vids every once in a while. I also like getting something that is unknown and piques my artistic interests.
Love your channel have been a long-time fan. Just thought I would mention X-Men 100 also introduced the fastball special for the first time and the updated costumes.
I have a small collection of foreign comics. I’ve purchased them on my travels from Spain and Germany. For a time I would send my friend who lives in Hamburg American comics and he would send me German ones! Good stuff.
Nice books Mike! I had friends that were in the service and while traveling the world they would buy comic books. They gave me a couple of Avenger books in French. I love having them as part of my collection. I thought to maybe go back and collect all the issues but my money went to other books. I only had a Lunch Money Budget!!
Those EH comics are my childhood and Hulk specifically. Been trying to find some when I visit my family in Montreal. Very cool additions to your collection.
My daughter has Spider Man in Spanish. Whatnot is dangerous lol, it's so easy to click on the button. I've bought books and later on forgot or had buyers regret lol. I want the first part to Days of Future Past, been looking for it.
Nice mail call. If you are keeping that X-Men book, I would not crack it out. It will stay protected the way it is and until you really need to take it out just leave it alone.
Uncanny 100 is just the best can't wait till I get one. I got a French Tomb of Dracula at the same what not show you were talking about. My first foreign language book. Thanks for the info about Jim Rugg @BZackheim. I picked it up without knowing anything about it as well. I saw it on a dollar claim show and just added to the stack. Have to give it a read. Uncanny 141 a no brainer as well. I agree if you don't collect X-Men and get those two books (141 and 142) its a win, win for sure. A great read and those are books you could invest in.
I have always bought foreign comics whenever I was abroad, and have lots of German, italian, spanish, danish, dutch, french and even hungarian and russian FF and spidey comics, for instance AS 121 from 4 different countries ,USA, but also in dutch, german and italian, that is supernice to have,
Yeah Mike, as a young sailor on my first North Atlantic cruise. We stopped in La-harve France and not having much money but wanting a souvenir I stopped in a shop and bought a Captain America comic vs a character called the Phoenix i believe. I also have a German " After Watchmen " didn't know it wasn't English till i got it home. 😮.Keep collecting dude !
Lots of cool books here!! I've been to shows and forgot what I'd grabbed . So many books and options at those shows!! Many times I'm unpacking and realize (often) that I'd grabbed doubles!! It happens!!
Great X-Men pickups Mike! I briefly knew Dave Cockrum. Great guy, I do wish he had stayed on the X-Men longer myself. John Byrne of course with Claremont were. epic together on Iron Fist and the X-Men too. Loved the Cobaltman too on your French Hulk. 1968-86 was my Golden Age. From age 6-25 in my ages.
I just recently picked up my first copy of Heroes for Hope, all because of your channel! Well, and that I collect X-men anyway. Just wanted to share! Unrelated, some Dave Stevens covers are showing up on hot lists on Key Collector. I'm very curious if your videos have had some influence on that market change.
@@lunchmoneycomics you underestimate yourself, my friend! I find myself appreciating (and buying) Art Adams and Excalibur and such more often now. I'm sure I'm not the only one. I like that you don't just show the hunt and find, but you also appreciate the books and educate on artists, writers, contexts, etc. That definitely helps set you apart from other channels.
Nice books! It's crazy that those French comics were printed in St. Lambert. I grew up in the town right next to St. Lambert, but all the French comics in my school were imported from France and Belgium (Tin Tin, Astrixs etc).
I enjoy your excitement discussing Xmen books, as such it has inspired me to collect issues and stories from the run. In the vain of LMC I purchase lower grades or reprints/facsimiles so I can enjoy the stories as they were told,
Great pick ups and video as usual. A couple of weeks ago I used your link to Jeffery to reach out to him for some advice on a cleaning technique that he uses which you mentioned in a previous video. Please thank him for me. He was so gracious and we spent a while on the phone discussing it as well as other things. You are very lucky to be part of such a friendly and receptive comic book community which shows through in your videos. Have a great day and good hunting.
Natalie Sanders covers are always great. She does that Vogue type cover on a lot of books. I picked up one of the Heroes for Hope book the other day. You inspired me to get it signed by as many artists as I can.
Those books you looked through at beginning are truly awesome indeed. I can understand why store owner wanted to take time pricing which You agreed with. The other thing is I am sure he wanted to check page counts covers and centerfold thoroughly so he doesn’t overcharge anyone. Because you want to keep customers happy. I have that Jade Steven’s covers and have not been that fond of it but now having u talk about it I am seeing it in a new light. Thanks man. If u got those French ones for around a dollar then u did very well. I wouldn’t feel too bad about the giveaway. A lot of times the winner of these giveaways are just surfing auctions for giveaways and a lot of times they have not bought a single thing. It’s just the way it’s set up. Hopeful that will change some day. Jess
Mike, I always enjoy your channel. I feel like a kid again when I watch your channel. You bring out what’s fun about comic books. I pretty much felt like the only one in town who read comic books. I started reading X-Men when they were reprints. You always bring up a book I thought no one else liked but me. You have such a way to connect to your audience and it’s fun to see you talk about these lost treasures. I hope I explained thoughts ok. I know what I want to say, but I never know if it comes across sounding the way I want it to. Thank you for your videos and channel!
Wow. Bought both the Johnny Quest and Grendel when they came out. Never noticed that the Grendel was a Dave Stevens cover. Great video as usual! Closing in on 12k!!!
I don't like the X-Men heroes for hope comic and never bought it. Why do you ask? Because Africa's a very rich country. Rich in resources. But we Western countries plunder their resources away from them. And we frame them, Africans as "needing our aid". We always frame them to look poor so we will look rich. It's unfair to them. Look at all the negative caricatures of them during the Golden to early silver age. Captain Marvel and Th Spirit's sidekicks? It's not good. It doesnt progress humanity. Also, did they really raise all that money for that comic for Africans? I highly doubt it. It's a scam. Pus, they are raising money for Africa and didnt even feature a African American writer or African American Marvel Characters on the cover.
Where to start... Africa is a continent containing 54 independent countries. Each will have their own socio-economic histories and challenges. One country can be rich while its neighbor can be poor. It's like that all around the world. The famine in east Africa, specifically, the country of Ethiopia, was one of the most devastating humanitarian crises of the 20th century. Several countries around the world (not just the US) provided aid. A quick google search shows the proceeds for the comic book went to "American Friends Services Committee" to assist with the famine relief, but there was also global fundraisers, concerts, music created, etc, all with proceeds going to the famine relief. The book also received the 'Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award" Maybe Marvel was jumping on the bandwagon, but you can't discredit the global efforts that were being made nor the severity of the crisis.
@@traybee115 then why didnt they just brand it as aid for Ethiopia? Our country likes to frame the entirety of Africa as always a poor continent. And we are saviors that can help them. I was led to believe this as a child. When I became an adult and dove deep into world affairs I discovered Africa is poor because we in Western countries plunder resources from them. Then we use propaganda and say they are poor and needy. It's far from the truth. And why is the comic written by writers that are all non African? Or non African American? In the cover is they are all white Marvel characters.
Mike you are the best story teller and I enjoy hearing you tell the stories because I can hear the excitement in your voice! Audio books in the future for you!! You are making me a X-Men Fan!!
