I bought my first Pre-Amp! The Golden Age Projects Pre-73

Recently I snagged this Golden Age Projects Pre-73 preamp. It's based on the sought after Neve 1073 sound and has some extra buttons/options for high end boosts and HPF slopes.
I'm still learning quite what the Neve 1073 sound 'is' but I like what I'm able to achieve on this preamp... right now. Have you used one of these GAP Pre-73's before? Or perhaps you have another company that you really like using? Let me know in the comments below :-)

I also use one and find that it really shines when I run an eq through the insert section. and I also move the gain and output in unity…most of time to get to the type of gain I wanna hear in the DAW

I bought one used from Guitar Center for $240 and absolutely LOVE it. Talk about mojo. My vocals cut without any EQ or compression. I'll never sell it and am now interested in checking out more GA gear.

I can hear the difference and I’m only listening on my iPhone. The pre amp gives some weight and warmth to the guitar tone. It brought out more of the Strat’s character to me.

If you like the GA, definitely check out the Warm Audio WA73 when you get a chance. They are similar, but I think the WA has a little nicer character. I’ve also got preamps by Grace Design, ART, API, Crane Song, CLM Dynamics, Mindprint, and Universal Audio. I am happy to report that none of them sound similar. They all add their own color, and do different things well. I’ve been collecting them for a lot of years, and it’s nice to have a little library of colors to go to when recording. I’m sure now that you are on the preamp kick, there will be no stopping you.

Thanks for that review 👍 Definitely it just sounds more natural with GAP Pre-73 and was worth mentioning that one can gets more from the mics when plugging into that. Take care, Mike

Should have got the DLX version with the output pad - much more tone options from pushing that output transformer. Costs hardly anything more.

Oh come on, you got the Golden Age because it color coordinates with the Scarlet. (LOL, just kiddin') Got to say, for a DI that guitar sounds really good. DI guitars usually sound bad (in my experience). The GA Pre-73 is going to shine most when you mic your amp or acoustics.

You got me...! ha! Yes I agree about the DI electric guitar sound but I'm on a serious Cory Wong vibe right now so perhaps that's what inspired me. And yes, I feel you are totally right about the Pre-73 shining through best on Vox and Acoustics :-) Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

Hey I also just bought my first preamp! I got the tone beast tb12 Black! Now I’m thinking about upgrading my audio interface from a 2nd generation focusrite 6i6 to the RME UFX plus or maybe a better focusrite not sure yet

Yes that's how the signal chain works :-) If you're after the Neve sound then this Pre-Amp will certainly help you achieve it!

Yeah sounds way thinner with just the interface. Much thicker with the pre amp

Have you tried the SM7B though the pre ? Can you do an AB test on vocals/spoken word. I find the SM7B needs a lot of gain, and is it better though the pre than the Focusrite ?

This is actually a video idea I have written down to do. I did a video on my Sm7b where I showed how I use it with just the Focusrite. I find the Focusrite does give it the juice it needs without being too noisy! But still, I think other content creators (and myself) would find it interesting to put the 7b through the pre amp with a transparent setting and see if that allows to have more freedom when speaking with the 7b than needing to be up close. Good call!

Check out the Warm Audio WA12 MK2 black mic preamp. I own one and it is one of thee best mic preamps ever. I did own the Tonebeast by Warm at one time as well, and I regret selling it.

I have this preamp i pluged it into a wrong power source since then it has this hum and its not working properly anymore. The tech guys around me dont even understand the circuitary. I feel sad its just sitting on my shelf, cant use it cant fix it. Any help

Im going to get an Art Voice Channel. Check that out, it's a BEAST!!!! I already own the Pro VLA 2 from Art, and it is a pretty solid 2 channel optical compressor, so I'm sure the Voice Channel will also be solid.
