fun fact about the letterpress drawers: the top drawer would have the capital letters, and the bottom would have the small letters, which is why we now use the words "uppercase" and "lowercase" for letters ☺
@@Sister_spooky you learned something every day thank you so much for saying that I didn’t know your peas and cues can say that or you can say that about well you know what I mean lol AnyWho
You should display all of the old portraits in frames going up your stairs. Pretend they are ancient relatives and make up names and eccentric and odd personalities and crazy stories about things they did in life.
The Gunne Sax dress. THE GUNNE SAX DRESS. I GASPED. When you pulled it out and then it on you! Pure perfection. Made my 1985 Anne of Green Gables heart so happy.

Loved learning that spats are actually "spatterdashes" !! 😄 The reason most antique clothing doesn't fit is because it didn't fit anyone back when it was new, so no one wore it, so it lasted a long time, unloved and unused, and ended up in an antique store for modern day peoples to surmise "how tiny eveyone was in the past!"
I've been watching this channel for so long, that when I say "I love you" to my hubby when I'm off to work, my brain automatically finishes with: "whether you're old or new to the channel. I upload every other Friday, and we have fun here." 😂😂😂
Omg that paper doll just transported me back to my childhood. Suddenly I am six years old, sitting on the scratchy yellowish carpet of my parents' living room which smells like dust and pipe tobacco, meticulously folding the little tabs over her delicate shoulders. That index/apothecary drawer thing -- SHO SHECKSHY And that gunnysack dress -- I'm sorry, you ARE Anne of Green Gables, I have diagnosed you, terminally adorable, there is no cure This was fun. Much as I love your make-stuff videos, it is nice to see a showcase of cool stuff now and again and just bask in the aesthetic. Have a lovely weekend
Seeing family photos at antique stores makes me so sad 😢 it reminds me of the movie Coco and I worry that all the people in those pictures are forgotten
I’ve been buying and selling antiques for lots of years now and can tell you that haggling is expected. The price is set in such a way that the seller expects you the buyer will offer half of that. Then a common thing for seller to come back and say is - I’ll meet you in the middle. So for example, if the seller prices something at $60 you, the buyer would then offer $30 and the seller would meet you in the middle at $45. The seller is actually getting the price they wanted and feel is fair and the buyer feels like they’re getting a deal. Everyone walks away happy 😊
Thank you for explaining that to someone who has never dared to haggle for probably the same reasons Rachel doesn't do it, too. It's good learning things from someone who explains stuff without being condescending, just frank and clear and in enough detail.
Reminder! Serotonin is not the 'happy' chemical, it is the chill out chemical. Dopamine is the 'happy' chemical. Serotonin helps you calm down. If you are sad or upset all the time, it makes that emotion smaller, which is why SSRIs are a thing for depression and anxiety. And also why they don't work for everyone. Sometimes it is the lack of 'happy' that's the problem, not the presence of 'sad'. Super happy doesn’t balance super sad... it just means you spend more time at an extreme of emotion.
I really appreciate this explanation. I have always wondered why SSRIs and SNRIs work for some people and not others, and this is such a solid common sense explanation that now I have a chance at remembering it. Thank you! Now it makes total sense why my SNRI works for me-my depressed feels are due to brain inflammation, which in my case will generate extra feels like depression and anxiety, but it doesn’t impact my regular happy feels.
@@titian-red Thank you. It's over simplified into inaccuracy. But I find a lot of people on a next level confusion between the two neurotransmitters, so 'inaccurate due to too simple' is much better than outright confusion. :)
@@marissabulso6439 Oh goodness! As someone with post viral chronic fatigue, I can empathise with brain fog and the sort of listless, anxious malaise that comes with chronic inflammation in your immune system. -.- Fortunately I'm now at a level where hayfever antihistamines and ginger tea mostly keeps it at bay. I hope your treatment is effective and with minimal side effects.
I'll have to look more into this, as I am a little confused😅 Meds NEVER worked for me. No matter what I tried, I never felt the slightest difference. Lol, sometimes I (jokingly) thought they gave me placebo 😂 I think I might have some strange lack of sensitivity to these drugs, otherwise I can't understand why I felt absolutely nothing, especially when for some people, they didn't just provide an improvement, but were life-changing.
I've missed this type of content of yours so much! Not just the haul aspect, but the sitting down and chatting, the sharing of joys, and the chill hang out vibe
This has become my comfort channel. I feel like we’re just hanging out with our friend and that is awesome. Whenever I’ve had a stressful day, I just watch some of her videos and it brightens my day.
I'd personally welcome you to take more of these easier weeks. As much as I adore your 'making' videos, I've also missed the old school vintage videos too. This was so much fun 😊😊❤
I wanted to forever tell you this you so much ! You always reminded me of Anne Shirley.. I have quite a history with Anne of Green Gables as I’m originally from Prince Edward Island ,Canada the home of Lucy Maude Montgomery…. Xoxo. In my younger life i worked for a company that painted ceramic figures that looks like parts and pieces of the book …like when Anne was picked up at the railway station and on the trip home with Matthew. You look amazing and she’s one of my favourite characters ever ❤
I 100% have to send this to my new friend because the first time he came to my apt he said "You know, for all the alt goth teenage photos you showed me your decor has serious granny vibes" 😂❤👵
I had completely forgotten about those paper dolls! My grandma had them at her house along with the ones she made as a little girl and we'd play with them whenever she was watching me. Looking back, it's probably where my love of the Victorian and Edwardian fashion stemmed from. What a treasure to be reminded of such a sweet memory with my grandma.
As a near lifelong collector of paperdolls and a several year viewer of this channel, I cannot tell you what joy it brings me to finally see you bring paperdoll content to youtube. Trying on each outfit for us to admire while old timey music plays. Perfection.
I'm a volunteer at an old manor house and my favourite piece of furniture is the library desk that opens up and folds into a set of steps to reach the top shelf. It is breathtaking and so magicall! So i understand your giddiness haha. It is a very specific type of excitement.
I went antique shopping for my birthday and came away with a vintage table. It, too, is convertible in that the glass top is actually a tray. I totally get the thrill of finding unique, older pieces. I might have two, vintage microscopes as well several antique art pieces. They bring me so much joy. ❤
I have needed a haul of some sort for a long time. I have been missing ye old roots - character outfit creations, thrift haul and over hauls, and closet clean-outs 😍
Rachel is the perfect mic of enthusiasm and exhaustion we need for this moment in time. I'm glad she could take a break from the grueling labour to return to her roots in hoarding
I used to hate the idea of wrecking books til I have seen so so many librarians talking about it being okay due to the sheer volume of printed material in the world + it means that the book gets new life rather than rotting on a shelf
I only mind when people repurpose hard to find first editions of popular books. Especially to make proposal boxes. Is it very sweet and adorable and a keepsake? Yes. Does it hurt my soul a little? Also yes. 😅 I had such trouble finding the first editions of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings because lots of people (especially on Etsy) bought them up to turn into proposal boxes or little book boxes, whereas I really do want those to read and collect/preserve. But the older books with pretty covers that no one is reading? I agree with the librarians when it comes to those! It’s nice to see them getting a new life.
Omg, my grandma had a bench-table like that!! I’ve never seen another one before! Hers is a little bigger and came with side tables that can be used as stools for when you convert it into a table. Though the carving and decoration on yours is much more elaborate. But still. Now I must pick up my jaw from the floor…
Oh, as soon as that last piece turned up, I squealed “a mink’s bench!” I love Monk’s benches. We actually have one ourselves that’s been handed down through the family. Such a versatile piece of furniture. Also, the one you got is pretty rare, they don’t often have engraving on the underside of the table/back of the bench.
I applaud you and Nick for getting anything off by haggling at Brimfield. The dealers there are notorious for being tough negotiators. At least they have been for me every time I have been.
Maybe it was already revealed what the next home renovation project is going to be, but I do wonder if it perhaps is going to be a sewing room? 🤔 Because the letterpress drawers to store sewing supplies would fit that theme and also in the previous video it was said that it would be one of the last times we would see Rachel as a floor troll. 🕵️
Those spats might not fit but I can recommend making some as a quick project! And you can use those antique ones as a pattern template! I do love the looks of spats.
Unless the seller handcrafted the item, most sellers won't bat an eye at haggling. In many cases, it's expected and the seller will price a little high to allow for an acceptable profit at less than the asking price.
@elenachristian9860 Think of it this way, you're complimenting the seller by wanting the item so much that you're willing to try to get it even if it's out of your price range. Maybe they want the personal interaction, and you're going to be generous and give them that interaction. 😉 Sometimes reframing an experience can reshape your emotional response. It took me years to get over public speaking until I realized that, in real life, if I spoke to a group of people, it's because they wanted to hear what I was saying. No one was holding them hostage to listen. My anxiety quickly dissipated after that epiphany. Anxiety sucks.
@@titian-red This actually just altered my brain chemistry, because that is such a good way to look at it! I'm also a highly anxious person, so that is such a refreshing perspective to hear!
That chest of drawers with compartments… ❤ like walking into The Container Store… stuff like that makes me think of being 8 at the farm and going through my grandmother’s sewing box which was a collection of drawers set into the wall that my grandfather built and was full of all the things an 8 year old would find fascinating and inspirational. Love it. ❤ That table/bench/chest from the end of the video, we had one of those! It was made in the 80s and very plain, but it was at the door and we’d use it daily, and for holidays and dinners, it was the “kids’ table”. Haha all the things that are old and new again! Love it.
When Rachel came out with the Gunne Sax dress I made this "aaurgh" sound because it looked so much like Anne!!! and the she made THE EXACT SAME SOUND!! Day: made.
oh, I used to love paper dolls as a kid! I had some really cool "history of barbie" books that referenced paper dolls as being kind of the only option for little girls to play with fashion before barbie, and that made me FASCINATED with the concept of paper dolls.
I live in a Victorian terrace house just outside London. The only new items are the kitchen floor tiles abd the mattress on our bed. Everything else is 2nd hand. Like you, I love big lumps of wooden furniture, which suits the house well. I love the monk's bench, I have one myself. £20 from FB market place; no haggling required 😂
That Belle doll thing you have is like the ones my my mum used to get me when I was younger ( in the 80’s). Victorian dolls I think they were and they had tons of different outfits and backdrops to put them in different scenes
I love the brown dress with the white poof sleeves!!! And the Green dress! Giving Anne of green gables and we are here for it! we are also very jealous of your transforming furniture piece!
I'm 40 next month and chanelled my inner Rachel. My bedroom literally smeezed amd because whimisical and im not mad about it, its the biggest serotonin boost ever. Loving all the pieces that you got. Way jealous of the table, seat, storage piece.
Oh I believe the incredible things you can find thrifting. I work at a very large thrift store and so many cool doodads show up. Just today we had two antique irons come through processing. Last week there was an antique chamberpot. It's a very fascinating job to have. I love those wooden spools.
My diningroom table is like that table you bought, but bigger and not carved. My dad made it for my maternal grandmother to fit into her skinny apartment dinigroom. The removable wood pins that secure the top are loose and fall out, but I love it and store craftsy stuff in it. He made it in the 90s.
I had those paper dolls as a kid! There was a whole fairytale and historical range of them, each more beautiful than the last. Thanks for the memories of those dolls!
Thank you for taking us with you on your adventure Rachel! I will admit that these are amoung my favourite type of video. Where we sit, chat and explore together. You feel free to do videos like this as much as you'd like 😉
You can probably add a panel to the spats to make them fit. As for the record player holder? One word - Victrola. I always wanted one. Don't care if it works. it looks amazing. Some of the antique stores in my area had several, and not for a lot of money, esp. if they didn't work. Thank YOU Rachel Houdini!
My prom dress was a Gunne Sax!!!! I loved it! Also had a off white-off double layered skirt with swiss dots, satin ribbon and lace. Love your new find!
I used to be obsessed with paper dressing dolls when I was little, I used to take them everywhere with me and call them my friends 😭 that little lady brought back some memories!
The brown 60s dress is so so cute! I think it could be clever to cut up the bolero and make a little sash to attach to the sides so it can be tied in the back like an apron! It will make it more flexible in case your size ever changes or you just eat a big burrito. God they're good.
✨😁Rachel Maksy’s taking me to look at old things✨ literally clapping hands with glee. "Things that make me go 😁" ….oooh and LOOK at that yellowish old settle /sofa chair 👏🏼👏🏼 Thank you for all the joy Rachel 💐🐸🦋🦉🍓
Hi love your show whatever you're doing. I'm twice your age and having spent my life sewing stuff I have a tip. Always iron your pattern pieces, no steam barely warm iron . A person can lose 1/2 to one size because of the wrinkles. Your project will come out the size the pattern says. I hope this doesn't sound nit picky or rude . Keep doing all that you do!
FOR THE BROWN DRESS: REMEMBER TO NOT CUT ANYTHING OFF SO THAT THE NEXT PERSON CAN TAKE OUT YOUR PERSONALIZED SEAMS IF THEY NEED. I'M SURE YOU ALREADY KNEW BUT IM DRUNK AND JUST HAD TO MENTION BECAUSE AS YOU SAID HAVING BIGGER SIZES OF VINTAGE IS SO RARE.
I don’t know if I’m in the minority here but I love these episodes. OK granted I am an OCD perfectionist so as much as I love your channel I cringe a bit at your devil. May care attitude about detailing when sewing projects are happening, but I absolutely love these kind of episodes. This is what brought me to your channel originally all those years ago and they bring me so much joy so don’t put so much pressure on yourself too, create projects you’re already creating videos❤
I jave been here for years and often miss your old style videos (totally love your new ones too) so this 🧡 made me so happy. Im here for YOU honestly don't care about what the video is about, they all make me happy!
I cannot express how adorable your fit and look is in this video. And that table/bench piece is incredible! This video is such a happy dose of serotonin.
