Many thanks to Ed for the opportunity to contribute to the VINWiki archives, and thanks for the love in the comments! Not to disappoint, I drove this NSX on a ~700 mile loop of the southeast (the scenic route from from Knoxville to Atlanta) to record this, doing some filming for my own channel along the way. 'Still a great car, even ~10 years on.

Lap of the World it was nice to hear the story. I'm subscribed to you now and I'm going to take a browse through the videos later, but I have a bit of a rabbit-trail question (one that would rate it's own video even? Or maybe you already addressed it and I just haven't watched it yet 😂): How does a properly-maintained very-high-mileage car compare to a low-ish-mileage example with similar mods, as far as driving feel on the street and the track? I.e. the bushings and shocks and etc on the high-miles car AND the low-miles car have been replaced/upgraded in a similar manner, so the comparison would be more about chassis structure with use rather than outright age or maintenance. I've had high-mileage older cars and low-mileage late model cars, but it is hard to tell how much of the improved feel and chassis stiffness is just from the improvements in design and engineering in subsequent generations, vs how much is from less miles on the chassis. Part of what sparks this is that I have owned a 1995 M3 for the past year or so, and since it is originally Japan-spec before being imported to the middle east, it's fairly low miles for a car of its age (about 113k). I have buddies stateside that have owned numerous E36s, but they all have generally been much higher in mileage (many of them near or over the 200k mark). We both have done the same typical upgrades (e.g. fresh bushings, KW coilovers, all tie rods and balljoints replaced in the last year, etc), but I'm too far on the other side of the planet to drive them back to back 😂. I did have the opportunity to derive my friend's dad's S2000 back to back with my high-mileage S2000 years ago, but it was a short drive without a real chance to compare, although they did feel rather similar with some minor, but noticeable, differences (his was a 2002, which had some slight revisions at the factory, with about 16k at the time, and mine was a 2000 with about 125k at the time) So, I'm wondering if you've had a chance to drive a low-miles NSX with similar upgrades back to back with, or in close temporal proximity to, your (very 😬) high-mileage car, and if so was there noticeable difference?
@LapoftheWorld
@LapoftheWorld 6 лет назад
Thanks for popping over and checking out the channel! That's definitely a pretty deep question and is, as you say, probably good video fodder. Maybe I can set something up at NSXPO this year (as that will be probably the best odds of finding a similarly modded car but with maybe 50k miles or under). The quick answer would be that I think the NSX holds up better than a lot of 90's Sportscars with respect to rigidity and retaining a "tight" feel but, having ridden in several more pristine examples as a track instructor, I know mine has a few more occasional squeaks and rattles. I don't get the feeling that the input/output response to the controls and the feedback from the chassis has suffered too much though, if at all. The pristine cars I've driven (just casually) have all been nearly bone stock, which means they are by-default a bit quieter and softer riding, so a bad comparison for your question.

Justin Y Not Yes they will go to 200k, you can go on Ferrarichat and read about them, there are even a few photos of high mileage ones floating around the nets ...but as far as the fortune part, well that of course depends on your mechanical abilities or lack there of. If you find a mechanic comfortable doing the work then you will be ok, it's going to the dealer that will make your wallet cry. I personally know a regular mechanic that services a local judge's mid 80's Testarossa , that thing has 80+k miles on it.He said it's not as big a deal as people make it out to be.

The guy that bought the NSX must be a detailing enthusiast to notice and photograph the scratches and swirl marks. I even heard the mention of not a detailers ideal car lol. The scratches showcased on the hood were not caused by cats but improper washing. From automatic car washes and “hand washes” that use abrasive brushes. I am sure the cats left their “mark” as well. 👍🏻

As an East coaster who traveled NJ to Roanoke VA monthly, I-81 was the location of many of my minor reckless driving tickets. (clocked me at 81mph, and 87mph another time) Dated/married a girl 60 miles away at another college, so I would pick her up Friday and drop her back off Sunday night. 240 miles for the 2 round trips. Every weekend, for 3 years. Plus I'd go up once or twice per week. (Thank god gas prices were below $1/gal!). I've always wanted an NSX, but always chose "the responsible car" instead - sedan, etc. Young and stupidly conservative - though I'd probably still be in jail if 22 year old me had an NSX. My 528i E39 5 speed easily cruised at triple digits. I still put the first gen NSX on my want list.

The original owner extracted $212,000 of value from that NSX. There's a couple of ways to go with cars--you can try and baby them and keep them in a Ziploc bag, or you can enjoy them and that means miles and wear and tear. My advice: Whatever you spend on a classic, expect to spend on a classic again over the course of setting it right. And now this owner is extracting value from it.

I swear he's not wrong. In 2013 I thought about buy a 1992 Acura nsx with 90k miles for 21,000$ but didn't but it because I thought it was overpriced for how slow it was even though it was a good looking car. Instead I bought a 2011 Mustang gt for 21k with 40k miles. Looking back and now that that car is worth double and I ended up selling the GT for 16k. What a huge loss I took on that one. :'/ But I just look back on it and laugh. It's crazy at that point in time there was tons of cheap NSXs but they weren't popular at all until the re-release. 😂

There have to be a HUGE number of stories attached to people getting lost having just acquired a new-to-them car. I know I've managed it a truly vast number of times. In the days before GPS pr twat-nav leaving my directions on the bus or train was a personal favourite...

At first I was like "yeah, right... the lowest I've ever seen was $20K with an advertised blown head gasket and would not start"... but, I think you and I are the same person, all the way down to [in my case pre-]foreclosed house as an investment. Mine was about $11K more than yours' with half the mileage and some VERY questionable mods (nitrous that actually never worked right due to janky wiring when I tried to make it work... and a wing installed on TOP of the stock wing, not counting all of the flat back overspray on a very rare green car that was on the front and back of the car)... but you know what? It was worth every dang penny modding it a little righter and fixing the cosmetic things to have a pretty cool Type-R clone that I love driving as much as others love seeing. I daily drove that thing for YEARS and still turns heads at 122K miles. :) I put a few grand into it over the years to keep it running and upgrade things (about $5K recently to rebuild both heads and get a new ATI crank dampener in there, among a few other minor things), but I'll be damned if this has not been one of the most reliable/lowest maintenance cost vehicles I have ever owned!

When I bought my 944 I drove it back from Baltimore (to Atlanta) and decided in my infinite wisdom, and a little coxing from a c4 vette, to open it up... on a particularly sparse four-lane stretch of i95, in Virgini,a on a Sunday morning. 21 years old, owned this thing just a couple hours, in fact learned to drive manual in it just that morning. We went for a bit at speed but I got cold feet and signaled us to back off, we coasted back down to a far more reasonable speed just in time to fly past 2 highway patrol which thankfully ignored our 10-15mph excess. I dare not fathom what would have happened if they caught us at speed.

I sold my dark green 94 NSX for 9g (I paid 56g for it in 2000) with a clean title. It was stolen from Maplewood, NJ and the right front corner was crashed. They also smoked the clutch and ended up over revving it enough to cause a rod or lifter knock. I didn’t have insurance on it at the time and being that I was only 21 I couldn’t afford to repair it. My boss whom I sold it to repaired it and ended up selling it for 25g a few years later. I always wonder where it is now. Don’t have the VIN.

Dang! 16G's for an NSX, and you wanted to drive home from NY to Maryland PA, to Tennessee during traffic and the car has over 200 thousand miles? That's crazy! And the crazy thing was that it got you there. No wonder people say Hondas are the most reliable cars on the RD.

@kbdadriftking

VINwiki it looked pretty good on the outside, and the interior looked pretty good. Not sure of the mechanical condition but he definitely was not a person that liked inheriting issues. It didn't have a whole lot of miles. He was a big time salesman so I'm pretty sure he talked the guy down

Paint was a little rough? 202k+ miles in an older gentleman's garage who bought it new in 1992 for his real estate business? Well, if the guy had a few downturns, as you mention he was probably selling it to keep the lights on, I'm sure the car was not priority.

I bought a G35 Coupe with 182k miles on it and it is a pretty damn clean car. Salvage title, no frame damage or body damage or engine damage whatsoever... Front bumper and the rest of the car still have OEM clear bra on it (very ugly) and the roof was peeling (painted it) and there is a slight tick noise, otherwise it's a great car. I sold it after 10k miles and I kinda feel fucked up because it was such a neat car to me lol. I kinda wanna buy it back and actually put money into it to make it "new" again.

I was ready and waiting to prove you wrong since back in 07 I was in the market for a car for my dad to buy a Japanese classic and I found a black on black NSX for 16,000... But you beat that by a grand even if it was auto or manual. I just wish he had bought the damn thing or I should have bought it, it'd be worth like 4 times as much now
@PatrickBaptist
@PatrickBaptist 6 лет назад
I doubt that was the cheapest sold nsx period, alot of sellers will leave the price blank on the title for the new buyer to decide how much to pay tax on, and in my state a bill of sale isn't needed to xfer ownership of a vehicle, if you price it too low you just get a default tax price for it...... I've been given that treatment a number of times, it's typical on craigslist especially. When I sale a vehicle, I give a bill of sale with all the info on it and just sign and print name on the title and leave the rest up to the buyer, I don't want to waste time writing more crap someone else can bother with it is my take.

I remember at one time, Richard and another local guy named Eric Witt (trueshine) both had black NSX's with well over 200k miles here in Knoxville. I think Eric's car might have even been $15k (not sure of its title status though). There was a really cool pic of the 2 cars ass to ass at a local cars and coffee floating around back then Richards car really has been a mainstay the past decade of our local car scene. Probably about as cool and as "dual-duty" as any track car out there.

Frack Yea! Wrenched for Acura in the late 80's saw them, General manager had one. Didn't ever touch it. Fast forward 20 years, I'm wrenching at an "auction refurbishment center" oh my! But my boss has an nsx. One day it's a no start. Give it to me, my bros say "he's a honda guy" ya, he did. Look at this, check that, test this. Then, level 2...voltage drop. OMG! The corrosion that had traveled up the wire! I recommended OEM cable/ harness...no, strip the cable back, clean best as possible, heat shrink & universal battery clamps. Ok, I was young, I did what I was told. It worked. Did I like it, no. Boss (owner) asks if I test drove it. I said no. He asked why? I said "cause you hired me to fix cars, not to juryrig them" put his keys on the desk, turned around & walked out. My gosh! That place was a hoot! Judas the memories, then the owner comes to to me with his #coolchopper no start. Same thing, look at this, check that, charge battery, test that. My diag? Starter (worn from excessive cranking) hi toqure, gear reduction, new battery...high CCA, clean cables & grounds. Well, now it went...cha,cha, cha...vroom! Couple more starts, checked the charging system...cool. Pulled it out, parked in front of his office & brought him his keys. "Did you ride it?" "No! You asked me to fix a 'no-start'...it starts" Well, I don't understand why you didn't ride it!! I looked at him and said (name deleted) "Sir, I can't write the check if anything happens, but I do have work backed up that will make both of us money" He shoved the key in his pocket & said "thank you" I turned, exited, went back to work...It's the little things.

The fact was I had seen many NSX priced around 20k or under on craigslist LA in 2006-2007 when financial meltdown in US. I was so broke myself at that time and couldn't afford at that time even though I wanted so bad. Now, all the same condition one, I have to pay more than double the price.

There are 2 cars I've heard several ASE certified and gearhead friends all use the same terms to describe (and old scooters like classic Vespa's) - old VWs and RX7s. They call them a "50/50 car" or "50% car" - meaning you spend half your time IN the car and half your time UNDER the car. Heh. All vehicles that when you see somebody with one and it's in even halfway-decent condition? You KNOW they've got a passion. :-)
