Jeremy, on January 19, 2019, I walked into Gruhn's with my right arm in a sling, recovering from my second shoulder surgery. I was looking for a smaller guitar than the dreadnaughts I had been playing to help alleviate the shoulder problems. After removing my sling, I played 10-12 different guitars, but kept coming back to an OM-18 Authentic 1933. As I later found out, it was the first year of production for this guitar and had evidently been in the store for several years. I told my wife I really liked it, but it cost $6000, according to the tag. Without batting an eye, she said okay, get it. I ended up paying $4000 for it, and yes, if you haven't guessed by now, this is the same guitar you wanted. I want to thank you for passing on it, because this is my favorite guitar. As for those people that question spending this much on a mahogany guitar, I would question them about their rosewood snobbery. A great guitar is a great guitar regardless if it is mahogany or rosewood. Personally, I actually prefer the sound of a good mahogany over a rosewood.

I've found out some guitarist really like the mahogany back and sides with an assortment of various spruce tops, even cedar tops.

Only the uninformed would cast judgement on one wood over another. A friend of mine built a Holzaphel 12 string replica out of pine (like the original). It sounds like a harpsichord and rings forever. I defy anyone to show me a better 12 string. Mahogany has a sweet tone and is tight and responsive. Rosewood is different, not better, not worse.

@@mind140 Well put. I have owned a lot of guitars, I still prefer guitars with mahogany backs and sides. My first guitar bought in 1961 was a 1939 Martin 00-17. 15 Martins later I have a 0000-1 from 1997 and a 2015 00-18V with flamed mahogany backs and sides. I prefer the best guitars over the most expensive guitars. Relicing (sp) of any degree is a deterrent to purchase. Phony is phony.

Happy to hear your still enjoying the D-18 Authentic, it looks,sounds, and probably feels vintage and as long as it makes you happy, then really thats all that matters, The Authentic series has been around for more than 10 years now, so your not the only one searching and finding that new modern vintage tone and they keep selling. Martin must have got it right with the Authentic line. Enjoy and Merry Christmas.

Hi Jeremy, I'm an ancient acoustic guitarist in the UK. I am one of those Baby boomers who have acquired a significant collection of acoustic (only) guitars over the last 25 years. I love your passion and and your sincerity. My main passion is for 12 fret guitars because of the wider necks which suit me better and I mostly play Collings. I would never play a "reliced" guitar that looks as if it has been played badly - i.e. scratches above/below the strings. The "pickguard" used to be called the "scratchplate" in the UK because marks below the strings would have been caused by trailing finger nails not flailing picks! The time will come when I (and many other baby boomers) will shuffle off this mortal coil and those 20th C guitars will need to be offered to a younger generation. Will the prices of end of 20th century acoustic guitars retain value and love, I wonder? Thank you for your channel.

Hi so would you say the rosewood is brighter than or darker than the mahogany ? Thanks !
@sonofprovence
@sonofprovence Месяц назад
@@jixxxxer17 It is darker. I own the 1939 D-18 authentic, VTS, sinker mahogany, aged, with an amber Adirondack top. It does not get any better. It is brighter on the high end compared with the D-28 rosewood authentic, but mine has an incredibly full bass as Jeremy emphasizes. Its bass is better than the one I have on my D-42, which is a rosewood/Adirondack guitar. I play the D-18 much more than the D-42.

Enjoy that beautiful Martin, Jeremy! I own a Martin D18 Golden Era and a 1961 Martin D18. I agree that a good mahogany guitar definitely has a unique and complex tone. Great for vocal accompaniments. I did not appreciate this for a long time , but now find a place for mahogany next to my rosewood acoustic guitars. I’ve been playing guitar since 1967 - so been around the block… Cheers!

What guitar would make me stop buying guitars? One for each child and grandchild, and all of them played by me.
@jordangunit3078
@jordangunit3078 9 месяцев назад
Yep. People that doubt the authentic series bc of the price have not played the old Martins, nor the high end models the actually produce the details of the golden era guitars. The standard D18s don’t come close in sound in any way. Also, aging on an acoustic guitar opens the sound up for more sustain and power all around. Needs to be played to be understood before anyone makes comments.

I REALLY hate the whole relic thing! I got my D28 in May of 1993 and when it got its first 'ding' on the body, I was heartbroken. Luckily it was very light damage and a shop (Old Boise Guitars - RIP) was able to buff it out. Now it and my other 8 guitars (Martin J15-12 mahogany along with 7 various electrics) sit happily in hardshell cases and look just a perfect as the day I bought them.

An elegant, stripped down, and absolutely beautiful, real players guitar. A friend purchased one in sunburst when they first came out and I was immediately ( and still) impressed with it's tone/voice. Thinking about your comments on the non adjustable truss rod, I remember his neck as a slightly more chunky ( but again accurate to "1937") and therefore in my mind maybe more stable over time? Another impressive, stripped down copy was the copy of the first Ditson dreadnought. Again elegant, super light, and a beautiful voice/tone.

With the cash that that guitar requires, does it come with Waverly tuners? By the way, no one should ever have to defend liking a mahogany guitar. Just because rosewood is more expensive does not make it better. The two woods are just different.

Sweet guitar. I had a similar dream. I took a slightly different path. I chose a Gruhn Spec sinker mahogany natural top D-18. It mops the floor with many other guitars I've played next to in jam circles. Tonally is kind of in between the Rosewood and the hog. Dry, balanced, cut the mix, records well, and has the slightest bit of sweetness like rosewood. The adi top is spectacular too. Congrats on another feather in your cap!

Yamaha RED LABEL ....thoughts ?
@springertube
@springertube 9 месяцев назад
New or old? The newer Red Label tributes such as the 2016-issue 50th Anniversary FG-180 and followup FG models are said to be great, and IIRC have improvements over the also very good originals. I had one of the originals, 1971 FG-180 from new, and it was my workhorse for more than 25 years. Action was a bit high out of the box, but set up right--light versus medium strings and typically some other action work--excellent guitar, but those who have likened them to (standard) D-18s I believe are a bit over-praising. Realizing that Martins like all guitars, even within the same model, have some very good ones and some less so, on average those (note, I am not at all saying 'any') Yamahas are not at the same level. They are good, especially for their entry price, but they are not *that* good. They are tough as hell, as many years of traveling as well as camp fire-side playing with mine testifies to. Not speaking for the later (70s?) higher-numbered Red Labels, if I would give that original 180, and it's also popular FG-160 stablemate, any single demerit, it would be that it is not that resonant. My current old, c.1978 or so, "lawsuit" Takamine F-340S is a closer 18 clone--near dead ringer--both cosmetically and playing/sound-wise, with its solid spruce top but, like the Yamaha, laminated mahogany back and sides. The latter aspect doesn't seem to matter too much with those Takamines,...they (and Yairi) especially did a great job on their ply B&S, and with that construction you don't worry so much about humidity and to a degree temperature changes... therefore all of that ilk make for great gigging guitars. Back to the newer solid B&S Red Labels, I don't have enough experience with them to compare to the D-18, but certainly would think "better" than the old original Red Labels - as you would expect them to be given the intervening but especially recent decades' advancements available to low-to-mid priced acoustics.

I own a 1933 Martin R-18 archtop. It is constructed entirely of Mahogony. It has a unique sound that I enjoy very much. As for relic-ing a new guitar? I cannot stand it. I was disheartened to hear Martin has offered a battered road-worn version of the D-28. I never would have believed they would allow such a thing. I do understand artificially aging a guitar like this D-18. If I didn't know better I would have assumed it was a genuine vintage Martin. They do an amazing job. I just hope you'll consider it a forever guitar.

the ONLY reason anyone would shame a mahogany guitar is that they are jealous and defensive that their perceived value of their rosewood owned instruments are being somehow (stupidly) insulted - there is NOTHING and I mean NOTHING superior about rosewood comparatively, and you could say that about a lot of actual tone woods. Clearly, there is a difference from lesser quality tone woods - like we wouldn't want pine back and sides, but so many boomers and guitar elitists in general are so pissed off that mahogany can not only sound better, but that it's finally becoming way more popular than it had ever been before. 3/4 of my Martins are mahogany, and for a good reason - they sound the best. Some players will feel their rosewood guitars sound the best and it's all totally subjective, but for my money, I PREFER mahogany all day long.

I always aspired to own a Martin Dreadnaught. Bob Shane played a Martin and that was my inspiration. My first one came from an advertisement on the college billboard back in 1969-70. It was a used D-18 of questionable parentage but it was a real Martin. Over the years I bought a beautiful 1929 O-28, another D-18 after the first one was lost in a house fire, a Lo Prinzi, still have it, and a couple more. My biggest disappointment was a D-45 I bought new from a dealer in 1989. Maybe my expectations were too high for this beautiful guitar- it went back to Nazareth 3 times, the last time during Covid when you couldn’t even bring it inside. I was met in the outside lunch/smoking pavilion where it was picked up by an employee without even an inspection! That final “warranty” repair included reglueing the plastic binding coming loose, it’s second neck reset and fret replacement, a new bridge to help resolve a bowed top, repair a cracked brace and a bill for over $1000.00! Not bad for a mint condition, rarely played 30+ year old D-45. That’s when I made up my mind to sell it. I still think a Martin makes one of the best guitars and I still have 2 that have stood the test of time.

Nothing to be ashamed of. That's a beautiful ax with a fantastic tone. Many people don't understand that Mahogany is one of the finest tonewoods available. It's light and responsive and it's been around as long as musical instruments have, and it has outstanding tone. Rosewood is another tonewood that is deep, rich and has outstanding tone with it's own characteristics, as are woods like Koa, Ebony, Walnut and dozens of others. Makes no difference. A well made instrument is a joy to hold and to own. I own a D28 that I'm in love with. I have two less expensive mahogany based instruments that I grab like you do and play all the time. It’s beautiful! It really is an accurate and tasteful recreation. People who like heavy relics are probably trying to live vicariously through the real people who beat up guitars once upon a time. It’s not so much about the look of the guitar, but the lifestyle beyond it that it represents. Everyone wants to be a bad dude and live dangerously- why not do that through one’s guitar, lol? ⚠️🤘🏻🎸 I’m personally not a fan of relics unless it’s a recreation of an old model that is done tastefully and accurately. However, if someone showed up to my door with a beat up thing at my door, I’d still totally play it. I wouldn’t like it, but I’d totally play it. 😉😂

Honestly, paying for dents and scratches to make something LOOK old doesn't make it old nor authentic......give your head a shake, strip naked, run around the block a few times, and take a plunge in the lake in January. Was it made by some old guy who used to work at martin that is now like I don't know 178 years old??? If it makes you happy, fine, but seriously? There must be something hallucinogenic in your water. Words have meaning...."authentic' means real, and imitation is not authentic. Period! I suppose if Martin told the truth and just said it was a copy from their original plans they wouldn't sell as many for an inflated price. Should have bought a new one unscathed for $2000 less and I'd scratch it up for you for only a grand Canadian.

Dude, I can’t even imagine how fantastic that 1937 D-18 must be!! Wow! I have a 2023 D-18 standard I bought new, as my first nice acoustic, (I am only 22) and I’m absolutely in love with it. I had a D-16 special before it, I like Rosewood, but I think mahogany just sounds way better. At least I just prefer it. But that is seriously one hell of a guitar you’ve got!

Guitars are like people, some bring you good vibes and some drain you. I agree with you about the ‘relic’ craze, I have a rather burgeoning collection of Gibson J45’s & 1 J50. They’re all pushing up the years and although they all get a turn at being ‘gigged’, but like you mentioned, I look after my instruments fastidiously. The ‘aged’ look is a gentle stroking rather than, as some would put it . . . ‘bashed about’ and treated with contempt and disrespect. Anyhow, that’s my take on things. 🎶👍🏻

Beautiful. I personally love the Mahogany Acoustics, so full of harmonics and clarity.

Hiya Jeremy. I recently bought a D28 ModDlx which looks and sounds great except thru my guitar pedals where the sound is to overwhelmingly deep in overtones. I installed an LR Baggs Anthem pickup. I’ve found at high volumes with a QSC K10 monitor I can’t seem to cope with the muddines while adjusting all the eq/filters as possible on my LR Baggs Voiceprint preamp. I’m thinking it’s the rosewood and general “bigness” of the D28 that’s causing the issue. However I do use the same Baggs Anthem on an old Yamaha LL5 mahogany dread naught and that guitar handles mod pedals and high volume just fine. I want a quality mahogany that will work well with my guitar rig. Can the D18 stand up to the challenge? Lovely playing and well made video. Thanks brother!

One of my guitars is a 1969 D18 (original owner) and it is staying with me until the end of me. I do folk and Americana. Around 8 years ago it had a neck reset, other regular maintenance, and a K&K Pure Mini pickup was installed. I usually use Martin RETRO light strings on it and I sometimes string it with Martin Lifespan PBs lights when I want more punch. Play on!

Unfortunately I think they are still using vinyl sanding sealer which affects the finish depth and appearance of the grain esp on the back & sides. Doesn’t have the beauty of an old one.

I really dream about Authentic aged 1937 D-28 VTS with Madagascar rosewood, but they're almost 10k$. If the instrument was my bread and butter I'd opt for it, but for hobby that's too much :) I will prob end up with mainstream D-28. Also they just do not exist for sale in my country.

Funny you mentioned the thru-saddle, Jeremy. I bought a used D-18GE about 2 years ago and it has a thru-saddle, as well. I bought it from a blue grass player, which I am not, so it came with the action set up way too high for me. I figured, "no problem, I'll just take down the bottom of the saddle as I've done many times before on other acoustics". Wrong! I ended up taking it to my guitar tech and he adjusted it for me. Thankfully, I haven't experienced the "up and down" problems you have, perhaps because it is an older guitar. I also use D'Addario, humidipaks, which help regulate the moisture content of the wood. At any rate, the guitar is playing and sounding great, so I am a happy camper.

Now that is a guitar in my taste. Great choice,love the relic,love the yellow-ish top. Love the cut-thru saddle. Thats everything in a D-18. Relic,aging,patina.. whatever to me. But ”aged top” for me is only the color-tone. The yellow/honey golden finnish.

Hi Jeremy, I played brand new Martin 1937 authentic d18 aged model and brand new 1939 authentic d18 aged model in guitar shop. I played one hour on this two guitars. I believe 1937 will be better sound. Do you know any different about this two model guitar ? Thanks a lot

Congrats on your Martin. It sounds great but in all honesty it's not much better sounding than the Red Label Yamaha FG 5 which sounds as good if not better than my Martin D28 for 1/3 the price. I love Martin guitars. I also own a D10 and a D15 limited edition but IMO they are over priced. Anyway again congrats on your new guitar. I hope you get many years of satisfaction out of it.

I really liked what you said about relic’ing guitars, especially how it makes people think that it’s okay to treat instruments like crap. I’ve always dreamed of owning a D-18, but my old Yairi DY-45 has kept me pretty happy. It’s been with me a long time and lots of places, so it’s a bit banged up, but every bash came with some of my own pain.

Through saddles on martins aren't that much harder than modern saddles. Usually, martin doesn't compensate the through saddles. they're the same thickness as modern saddles, just a little longer. You don't have to file the end radius perfect, just close. I just use anything round about 2.5 inches wide and wrap sandpaper around it. You can get radius gauges from stew mac. Your saddle is probably fossilized ivory, so yeah dont mess that one up. You can have different saddles you put in for different seasons. The worst part is getting you old saddle out. Maybe that's where a good luthier would come in. They are usually glued from the factory. That's a really nice martin you have, that top really has the vintage tone in it.

Thats not true bro, lool at SRV's guitar u can see how it aged from when he first got it to what it was and the same with rory and have you ever toured??? In a van and only played the same 3 guitars on the road?? Im gonna say NO you havent because i can see you have a ton of guitars, which is cool but for example i bought my dream guitar in 2010 which was a new gibson es-335, custom shop fender strat NOT with no relic and my acoustic my martin 00-17 and they have a ton of wear that is ALL REAL and its because i play only those and i have play every single day and if there isnt a gig i will play 6-10 hrs a day and im not saying this to say ooo look at me lol but i decided back in the early 2000's that i was gonna do this for a living and realized well all my heros came from a time when there were no video games even though ive never been a "gamer" i still gave my ps2 away and stopped doing anything that could take away from playing and yes i take care of my guitars but now they have a shit ton of wear and you can see pics from over time so thats not true what your saying at all. Ive noticed most guys and gals dont play that often and then you have the guys who have a lot of guitars so they are always playing a different one and if they go play a "show" they take one guitar to there local bar play a set and go home so ya your never gonna see wear but if u play like a working musician and touring with the same guitars u will see a ton of wear! Look back at buddy guys strat in the mid 60's as well or....um trigger🤔 because he plays only that guitar

Any difference with 1939 martin d18 aged ? Why the price of 1937 Martin d18 aged is more expensive than 1939 d18 aged. Thanks

I know its not the same guitar. I went to gc with my son in law to look at d18's and they only had a scratch and dent special. It sounded ok, but, i played a 28 style with adirondack and vts. He worked there and got me over 1000 off the price! I love it and i play it all the time. Its a d28 and im not sure why they dont call it one. It has all the other protocol! My warranty even says d28 btw

Depending where do you live yeah, Hopefully your guitar will hold up, here in Canada the humidity and temperature changes drastically and I saw a couple of Martin needing resets after only 4 or 5 years. Your guitar case is your friend!

I just purchased one and decided I'm not gigging with it. Definitely not putting a K&K in it because of the lack of truss rod, plus it's so perfect, I don't want to change it. And as far as the fluctuations, so be it. It'll be as temperamental as the human condition. Some days it'll be easier to play, others not so much. Great video. Best D-18 I've ever played.
