"Budget friendly" rifles are typically just fine for hunting. Unless your ridiculously careful, it's nearly impossible to not get a few scratches on a hunting rifle. And I don't care who you are, if you scratch up a extra fancy Weatherby rifle, it's going to turn your guts inside out. I don't buy guns to sit in a safe and never use them. Firearms are built to be fired. Those extra fancy stocks, beautiful polished blue barrels, and engraving still have a place at the shooting bench.
I bought a patriot for my kid in 6.5 creed. It holds a 1.4in 3 shot group at 100y. It won't win any shooting comps, but it hits every deer in the vitals.
I have that exact rifle. I get decent groups at 100 yards with Winchester 150 gr Power Points. I actually bought it before reading all the negative comments. Glad I did or I might not have bought it, because I'm quite happy with mine.
This is what I love about your Chanel, you test everything with a open mind and a clean slate. That is a very nice looking Rifle and I can't wait to see how it shoots.
I've got to have a wood stock on my guns I can't bring myself to love anything in a synthetic stock and I insist on only buying wood stock and they have to have iron sights no iron sights I won't keep it around
Remington Rifles are by far the best, especially the oldies but forget about bolt action for hunting in general, (unless your a wide open Blind/stand hunter i guess) but there is no better hunting rifle than the 760,s and 7600's....by far the most comfortable, ergonomic, and the fastest follow up shots, without any manipulation of the Rifle, other than the 740, 742, 7400, ECT.
From either one have you had to send them back for bolt replacement? There is a reason they discontinued the 770. With the 783. Not shitting in you owning 2 and happy to finally after over a decade and 70 returns for customers that someone actually has the holy grail of thier worse made rifle. If they continued that model line they certainly would have been in par with the 700 mark X trigger recalls given time
@@leadhead7338 The pumps are fine but the semi autos are not. There is a reason a lot of gun shops won't take them on trade. Browning sa beats them both.
I have used Mossberg for 59 years, I love their firearms. They have always put meat in the freezer, and never broke my budget. No matter what people say, Mossberg delivers.
@@jadeddragon4254 hope not I had an older 410 500 Turkey and loved it. It felt great looking to get the new one. I will never buy a rifle from them again!
Like I told you in Tollivers, I have the 30-06. I've got some fine tuning to do, but when I got to 1 MOA, I left to give others at the range a turn to shoot. Mine prefers the 165 Cor Lokts. That was free handed sighting in, using a bath towel to rest the barrel on holding it like I was going to shoot a deer, not with a lead sled. That's gonna help me dial that little jewel in! I'm looking forward to watching what you can get out of yours and hoping for the best!
I've got an older MVP in .308. It has a short barrel and it shoots great! I'm not able to hunt much anymore but my friend has taken many white tails with it. Always one shot from up close to 300 yards. I live over here in the Sequatchie Valley not far from you. Long shots are rare!! Thanks for your great content!!
I’ve had two of the Patriot models. They seemed ok, but one had to be sent back to Mossberg right away due to a bad crown and sticky safety. They made me pay shipping, on a new rifle I just bought… was not happy to pay $60 to send back a budget rifle. They had to rebarrel the rifle… after I got it back I sold them both. Had a bad taste from the whole ordeal. I also have two mvp patrol rifles. Both had to be shimmed to get them to reliably function with various AR pattern mags. I don’t want to take a loss so I’m keeping them. Mossberg won’t be getting any more of my money for rifles.
Happy to see that you reload. Dad did quite a bit of load development for his rifle smith friend. It might take a while to find that "Best load for_______". It's worth it, though.
I don't have any experience with a Mossberg rifle but I have owned a Mossberg 500 shotgun since the mid 1970's and that thing has shot thousands of rounds through it. I shot trap for many years and it just always fires. Is it a pretty shotgun? Nope but it is really reliable.
I've got my own 500 loaded up with 00Buck for home defense. I too have had it for decades and even as short as she is, she's taken multitudes of White Wing Dove 🕊
A few years back I lent my middle grandson the money he needed to buy a heavy barrel Mossberg in 308. At the time he was a newly minted Navy Corpsman at Camp Lejeune. He took it to the 100 yard range and shot 7.62 NATO. He E-mailed me a picture of how he did. He shot the worse groups of the day with his new Jar Head buddies. Just over an inch. All his buddies shot under an inch. I think he likes it.
Had a patriot in .243 win a few years ago. Ended giving it to my brother in law to introduce him to catching deers. It's caught every one the trigger was squeezed on. To me personally the bolt could be better but the stock profile is the most comfortable of any rifle from and brand or or price range that I've ever held.
Have taken many deer with my 308 patriot over the years with a cheap vortex 4x12 diamond back. Confirm zero every fall before hunting season and it has always shot 1moa or better. I always hunt with 150grsoft points with great results with proper shot placement. Wishing I had got the threaded barrel model now that suppresser are more affordable and quicker to get approved.
I have never fired a bad bolt action, people like that who give guns a bad rap; like high point; should never be listened to, should never have a channel, because they are already biased or paid to be biased to certain guns or gun manufactures. I like this channel, because you're honest and buy the guns with your own money.
@@zoeyshoots my wife thinks mine are breeding. Evidently I need to stop keeping M1as together because she didn’t see the difference between barrel length, wood or synthetic stocks. Or National match, etc.
The duality of man, Mossberg shotguns are absolutely famous for being strong, durable, reliable, and affordable. The Mossberg rifles receive nothing, but indifference. The Mossberg pistols are completely unheard of. I've had my Mossberg Patriot for 5 years got the black synt stock and gray cerakote in 30-06, day 1 I threaded the barrel, and now I roll everything from 100gr subsonic plinkers for squirrels to heavy 220gr sluggers for hogs, it does it all. If you hot rod a 150gr to 3,000fps you get real close to 7 Rem Mag performance.
@@NCWoodlandRoamer I personally haven't pushed them that hard, partly because most of my shots here in Southeast Georgia are less than 300 yards. But yeah that Ramshot Hunter, and Big game can get the underrated 30-06 there.
@@linkbond08 Yeah same here, my longest shot ever here in western NC was maybe 150 yards so 3,000 fps out of a 150 is actually way more than I need here. But it’s nice to know what the ‘06 is capable of.
Had to send my Mossberg Patriot back. Firing pin wouldn’t work you could see it going forward at very slow speed not even putting a mark on the primer. Love all the videos keep them coming 🇺🇸
I knew it was the Mossberg Patriot, either that or the Remington 783. But with Backfires and then Gavin from Ultimate Reloaders well documented issues with the lemon 🍋 that Jim bought I was leaning towards the Mossberg. If I was to get one it would be the one that you got. I just wish that they would offer some lefties. I’m glad that you have seen an Axis 2 Pro in the stores. As you know I am waiting for one especially a lefty in 350 L to show up somewhere soon.
That is amazing accuracy for a rifle in that low price range. The problem with these cheap rifles from Mossberg, Savage, Ruger and Remington is the inconsistent quality control. You might get a good one or a bad one, If you get a bad one you have to send it in and wait to get it back to see if they really fired the problem or replaced the rifle. Fine if you want to take that chance, and its the worst case scenario you can sell it or trade it in if the factory does not fix it to your satisfaction. Some people are on a limited budget and can't afford a Tikka, CZ, Howa, Weatherby or Bergara, which are more expensive but better quality. Thanks for another excellent video.
I've got 4 Savage rifles in different calibers and they all shoot fantastic under 1" groups at 100 yards! They are older models between 1990-2003! In fact, they shoot better than my brother's Tikka. Thanks WTW
I think the problem is Adam is people don’t want to test out ammo and Fire Arms. You were the only guy that I know on RU-vid that actually would do a video of what the gun shoots the best !
Many decades ago my Grandfather told me if you buy a cheap item, don’t be surprised if it doesn’t work like you expect. Actually he said if you buy a $5.00 gun, don’t expect a quality gun.
Being a 60+ year rifle collector as well as a reloader and most of all a hunter and having owned hundreds of rifles over the years I got a 6.5 for my granddaughter about 5 years ago and it has killed more deer then just about any gun I own it that time and it’s a mossberg and we took it to the range this last weekend and it almost hit 1/2” inch groups with factor match Hornaday ammo😱 so I guess we will keep it🙌
I had the mossburge patriot in .308 thing was a nail driver no joke at 100 yards I was shooting nail heads on a board. My friend borrowed it for a deer hunt and I never got it back he fell in love with it and bought it from me. I had the savage axis 2 with the wood stock and a vortex diamond back 6-24x50 in 6.5 creedmoor and It’s my favorite rifle by far
I’ve had 4 of them. .450 bushmaster was a 10/10, 7mm PRC 10/10, 6.5 Creedmoor 10/10, but the .300 win mag was a 1/10 best group it shot was maybe 6” at 100 yards tried several loads
I bought the Mossberg Predator like your showing but in 6.5CM. Bought it on sale few years back for under 300. It turned out to be of the best rifles i've owned. It shoots sub 1 MOA with various factory ammos. My son has loved hunting with the gun. He liked it so much, I bought both my kids the patriot youth model. Only complaint on it, wish it had threaded barrel. both youth models shoot 1-1.25" groups with Winchester XP & Hornady SST.
I borrowed a Mossberg 7mm Rem Mag from my friend years ago and no matter what ammo I fed it I couldn't get it to group under 2 1/2" @ 100 yards so I promptly gave it back. All three Savage 110's that I've owned have been fantastic.
I had a .308 Mossberg Patriot. The first three years, it shot fine. Then it wouldn't hold a group. Changed scopes, torqued everything to spec, sighted it in, shot something else for half an hour, then it wouldn't group again. Sighted it in again, and I'd get 2 good, 1 flyer, Then 1 good, 2 flyers, then all three all over the place. Traded it with some other lower-end firearms I had for a Bergara B-14.
I own two Patriot Predator models. One in 7mm PRC and one in 6.5 CM. The both shoot sub moa. The PRC with hornady eld-x consistently groups less than 3/4” at 100 yards. I’ve never had an issue with either rifle.
Same here. Bot ATR in 308. Rolled some ammo and get 1 moa or less. Plenty of game taken with it although I have had several misfires at the moment of truth. Just racked another round and down animal. Could have been bad primers. Or not. But accuracy is there
The Savage 110 is one of the most accurate, if not the most accurate, out of the box rifles ever made. My 110 shoots 1 ragged hole at 300 yds. with the right ammo and low winds. It's a tack driver, for sure. It may have changed since I got mine. But my rifle is more accurate than I can hold offhand.
That rifle is most definitely a very despicable pile of crap. That was top of my most hated list until heritage came out with that god awful rough rider carbine. You might laugh but I’ve got three of those crappy carbines on my bench all with the same dang issues.
Had one that would shoot sub 1/2 moa. Because of that bought another one. That one was the most inaccurate rifle I ever bought. If you get an accurate one consider yourself blessed. It's not that they can't build an accurate gun. There have just been too many of them that shot terrible that you just can't feel good about taking a chance and buying one. Even though they are cheap that's still a lot of money for a gun that might not give even acceptable hunting accuracy. Until Mossberg gets their act together and consistently builds an accurate rifle I will never buy another one.
@@northernoutdooradventures3883 The bad one was a 7mm08 Patriot with a 22 inch cerakoted barrel. The good one was a 6.5 Creedmoor Super Bantam Patriot with a 20 inch barrel.
My buddy bought a Kentucky made 770 in .243 for his son a decade or so ago. One of the most accurate rifles he owns. His son has long since graduated to his Grandad's old M70 30/06. He has gotten to where he shoots the lil' 770 a lot himself these days.
@@AverageHouseHusband same, have had a 770 in .300wm for about a decade and it's a tack driver, but I can understand why people hate it. It's a cheap rifle, and it isn't very strong or repairable.
If their rifles are anything like their shotguns, then the Mossberg Patriot is a top tier performer and high quality. I trust my home defense to a Mossberg 500 and it performs flawlessly, 100% reliable.
back in my day everyone would bag on how bad the Remington 710 bolt action rifle i bought one years ago after the recall on them no gun store would let me trade it for another gun or by it off of me great video bro
Hey Who Tee Who that's a nice looking 308win deer catching rifle! Can't wait to see the video to see if this rifle will group with the right ammo. You always have to find the right ammo that a rifle likes to eat. That's the secret and alot of people shoot maybe 2 different types of ammo and get bad groups and give up and say that the rifle is crap! And most of the time that's not true. You have to keep trying different loads until you find what your particular rifle will eat! And I already know that's what you plan on doing! 👍WHO TEE WHO!
I bought one of the mossberg mvp predators in 5.56 that takes ar15 mags years ago. Great little rifle, shoots bug holes, did take a while to break in for feeding well when it was new. Great coyote gun on a budget.
I have a patriot in 450 bushmaster, absolute tack driver, maybe I got lucky, maybe it's because I took the time to feed it a bunch of ammo and figure out what it likes. Ive shot deer out to 300 yards with it and everything ive shot with it either dropped in it's tracks or within sight. I've never had a single problem with it also have it in a boyds stock instead of the cheap synthetic stock it came with.
I had a Mossberg Patriot. It was 308. It was THE WORST 308 I ever bought. The freebore was so much that to handload a 165gr bullet would have left not enough bullet in the case were I to get near the lands and grooves. Factory ammo got 2.75 to shotgun sized patterns (I cannot call them groups). I have a Savage 110 that turns in .5" groups with many factory ammo loads and handloads are south of .5". There is almost zero freebore with the Savage. I pulled a barrel off of a 30-06 Remington 700 with that issue. Replaced it with a Shilin. Now it is a tack driver. I was never happier to get rid of any rifle. Learned my lesson. Maybe they have improved? Hope so.
The price isn't necessarily the issue or the brand for that matter. Everything that's manufactured especially in mass production can and does have qc issues. A toaster, bolts and screws, a bicycle, motorcycle, lawnmowers, vehicles, baseball gloves, refrigerators, washing machines, hot water tank you name it. Some of the higher end products have more issues than the others. You never know, it just depends on how well the company that manufactures the product if their qc is good or not.
I bought a Mossberg MVP Patriot in 223 when they first came out. Can’t remember the year. Mine has the laminate wood stock in Pepper color. It’s really accurate. Even takes P Mags. Looking forward to your shooting video. Geez Adam, I don’t hate em though lol.
I've had Mossbergs that performed, and those that didn't. After my last fiasco with my Patriot in 350 Legend, I swore TO MOSSBERG... I would never buy their crap again. The issue was a bad magazine. How hard is it to replace a magazine? Let me send this in, you send me a new one. Nope... They tried coaching me on how to fix it because "they didn't have any 350 Legend magazines in stock." They also wanted me to send in the entire rifle! I went to their website, BOUGHT a new magazine that was IN STOCK and wrote them a message of client departure. The new magazine works perfectly and it's feeding as it should. Me + Mossberg = Never Again. I had feeding issues with a Henry Sidegate. They paid shipping, fixed the rifle TWICE, no photos necessary... and this rifle is covered for life if it ever fails again, no extra charge. THAT is how you do business in America!
I had a Patriot in .243 with a black synthetic stock and silver cerakote fluted barrel. It shot well but without having a locking bolt on safety, I ended up trading it after one season of the bolt opening unintentionally and cycling shells onto the ground. I won't buy a bolt rifle anymore without a locking bolt. Otherwise, the rifle performed well with Core Lokt ammo on deer.
I have 2 Patriot night train's .308 &.300WM both are .8-9moa factory ammo & .4-.5moa with hand loads. I did the shoot one clean, shoot two clean.etc.etc. route with them.
I have four bolt action rifles and that exact rifle is the one that usually goes to the blind with me when hunting. The other three are all way more expensive but they all shoot about the same and the Mossberg fits me better than any of them. The Mossberg only likes two factory loads. I have tried almost every brand and it shoots Norma Whitetail and Hornady Whitetail in 150 grain soft point better than the rest. Weird thing is all my other rifles are just as picky about specific brands and loads as well. Do the work and find out what your specific rifle likes before giving up on it. If it doesn’t like any of them, get rid of it no matter what brand it is or how much it cost because “only accurate rifles are interesting!”.
Ive had great success printing .308 with Norma White Tail in both of my rifles surprisingly. Didnt even know it was considered "budget" ammo until I was on a forum on day. Doesnt shoot budget to me 😅, and it's now put 3 deer and a hog in the freezer
I've gotten the 300 win mag. Works great, only complaint I had was the cheap stock, so I put on a Boyd's spike camp that was on sale. I don't shoot it much since each case takes like a pound of powder and it's for hunting, but makes holes where I want them with complete reliability. A lot of folks seem to have had QC issues, but I just assume they had a moron on the line for a bit who happily wasn't there when mine was made. I use copper so I single load since they're so long, but whatever.
I have a 5.56 MVP. It has shot well. But it had bolt and magwell problems. The magwell fix was a $100 fix and the bolt was just figuring what it was and some filing work. But that should not have been with a new firearm. Thanks for the video.
This reminds me, I had bought a Mossberg 4x4 in .25-06 at a discount from a shop that was going out of business. I need to get that out and see what it can do.
I bought a 30-06 Patriot because it was within my budget. The best group I could get was 3" at 100 yards. That was with 6 different loads. I was planning a trip to Wyoming for elk. Certainly was not sufficient. Maybe for PA big woods deer. So I sold it and full disclosure of what the groups were to the person buying it. I would not try a Patriot again.
The problem in the Patriots is serious manufacturing inconsistencies. Like gambling. One will be great, one will be complete garbage. I have an old Mossberg 4x4 and will never replace that with a patriot
Hey this is larry,I live in Alabama and was watching one of your videos about you going on a hunt soon and about shot placement.I bought a tree lounge deer stand many years ago and video tape was in it.I sit down and watched it and never seen no one drop a deer that fast and never took one step.I slowed the video down and watched it and seen the shot placement.I seen the bullet hit between the top of the shoulder blade and the spine. On my next hunt i tried that shot placement and WOW! It droped and did not take one step and never messed the meat up. Same size hole going in as it was going out very small. The bullet cuts the main artery to the heart and paralyzes the spine. Ever since then shooting anything there drops exactly where is it.
Great video and a discussion starter :) My first long range rifle in 308 was a cheap Mossberg MVP LR. It had more than respectable accuracy, I was shooting matches out at 100 yards with handloads. I have video proof of that. A couple of things bugged me: I did not like the wobbly bolt even when it was closed and a glitchy trigger with safety blade. Maybe it was just my rifle. Other than that, it would not hesitate to make it my main bush rifle
I have a mossburg 30-06 and it’s been absolutely great to me, I’d like to get another caliber eventually but it has served me well. All rifles have their quirks and I’m not saying my mossburg doesn’t but it shoots and it’s inherently accurate and I’m accurate with it
I didn’t have a good experience with the one I had. It was a 3-4 moa rifle and I even spent about 200 smackers trying to find an ammo it would shoot well. The best I could get out of it was around 2-2.5 moa with s&b of all things. The 165 grain copper hunting ammunition from them. Mine was not fun. Hopefully they have improved their quality control because I love their shotguns
I am looking forward to the results. Lots of people have had accuracy issues. Maybe it was a barrel manufacturing issue like ultimate reloader, and they fixed it
I think we can all agree the Remington 770 that they produced for only over a year back in 2012 was thw worse "budget" bolt rifle. We had more returns and send back for repair to Remington due to those shitty cast metal two piece bolts breaking
I have that very rifle and get very good groupings with both 150 and 175 gr. Have taken a couple of hogs at 75 & 100 yrds. For a farm and general hunting it works great on a budget.
I have one of those in 6.5 CM and it shoots fine both suppressed and unsuppressed. I don’t much care for the brown stock or mag, might look at replacing.
I have the Mossberg ATR 100 Model in 270 Win and it has been a great rifle! No problems with it. Hope this Mossy you picked up is just as true. Made in the USA 🇺🇸.
I hear it's hit or miss on the Mossberg, especially the 308 Winchester. I bought a used Mossberg 30.06 with a newer Redfield scope on it a couple years ago, I don't remember what model. I gave it to my brother because, I got a Interarms Mark X in 30.06 with a Leopold Scope on it.
I was given a patriot in 2018. Mine shoots 3 shots in 1 ¼ groups. Its a cheap feeling rifle but it's serviceable and 5 out of 5 bears surveyed couldn't tell if they were killed by a better rifle
Just my opinion if your in that budget range for a hunting rifle just go with the savage trail hunter or the ruger American gen2. Haven’t seen a bad thing said about either of those 2 rifles but the mossberg hasn’t had a consistent reputation with their rifles. I love their shotguns though!
I don't hate them personally. I do understand that they're hit or miss. You either get a rifle that is smooth as butter and half MOA, or you get a piece of junk that won't shoot smaller than 3 inch groups. It's a shame but, at least Mossberg's customer service is good about it. I have never heard of them giving anybody grief over making a warranty claim or anything.
I had the exact same rifle. Exactly the same. I bought it brand new and was so excited about out it. Owned it for exactly 15 mins till I got home and my wife took one look at it and now it’s hers lol. She’s knocked down some big bucks with it so I’m not too upset. It’s a great rifle , very underrated, which is good cause it keeps them affordable for those in the know.
