When you come to a crossing: blow your horn twice long, blow your horn once short, and blow your horn once long until your loco starts to enter the crossing.
Goes to train engineer job just to piss of people and say so when is my " training " and multiple train puns , just to get slapped in the face by the conductor
Brought back memories watching this. My grandad was an engineer and brought me and my little brother along on some short night rides when the higher ups weren't there. Looked exactly like this one. Only thing I noticed that was missing was the radio.
Great video. I liked your commentary. To clear up the dynamic blare mystery, when any electric motor is given electricity, it turns. When electricity is taken off it, as long as it it is still turning, it generates electricity. What the dynamic brake does is creates a resistance (A partial short) across the traction motors. That makes it harder for the motor to turn, but that won't stop it all together. The slower it turns, the less electricity it will produce, so get your hands on those air brakes if you are at 10 miles a hour or less.
the top speed of that particular locomotive type, which is an EMD SD40-2, is 65 mph with standard gearing. and your explanation of dynamic braking was great. A diesel locomotive works by using a diesel engine to turn an electric generator, which powers electric traction motors, which drive the wheels. the dynamic brake reverses the polarity of those motors, thus slowing the train down, and the excess energy is dispersed as heat. and by the way, when you're slowing the train down, you don't mess with the reverser setting, even putting it in neutral. i'm pretty sure moving the reverser while the train is in motion can cause damage.
Gray, Although DTG is not one of the bigger studios you can hardly call them indie. They are making train sims since MSTS litterally, DTG evolved from the original MSTS team, made railworks, Train Simulator 20xx, are developing the current FSX and a fishing sim and are developing a new flight sim. Few tips: Normally you do not use the reverser for braking. However, if you dod so consider this. The reverser controls the direction your engine will send you. Putting the reverser back when you go forward and then throttles up will give a braking effect as well. I used that in TS2017 on yards for quick coupling and reversing out of sidings. (below 5mph speeds only) TSW will run on DLC, if it's predecessor is any indication be prepared to pull your wallet often in the future, TS2017 DLC is hanging around the $4k mark. However.... steam... sales... use... TSW is basically TS2017 with better graphics and physics, I would recommend you check out MattPeddlesden on youtube. Besides him being one of the devs of this game he has some really useful content to learn more about the game and the engines in it. His channel goes by TrainSimLive. I am sure that, just like with MSTS and TS20xx, there will be loads of freeware mods on the internet. Keep an eye on sites like railworksamerica.com (US content) uktrainsim.com (UK content) and railsim.de (EU content) these are the contries the previous game focused n most and they are likely to do the same in this game. Play in moderation, or you will get addicted :P
ahhh the nostalgia of this video! Im obsessed with trains and train sims. Train Sim World 3 just released and it reminds me of when i bought the first one right as it came out. I thought it was amazing! so many good memories
the cold start procedure is pretty simple. to start you are going to want to climb aboard the train if you have not already, then you are going to proceed to the midsection of the locomotive, around the midsection of locomotive you are going to see some latches, once you have located them you will going to want to release them, then you are going to want to open the panel which should review the engine, depending on which side of the engine you open the engine housing from you are going to see a prime/start switch, you are going to want to hold the switch in the prime position for a few seconds, then put it into start position and then you should hear the engine starting up
this is what the bail off for the independent brake means. "bailing" off the locomotive brakes . Engineers are required to do this each time an automatic reduction is made on the brake pipe to prevent brake cylinder pressure on the locomotive from developing .
The green, yellow and red symbols are your signals usually when you see a yellow signal go half the speed because the next signal might be red and you will need to stop at that signal due to another train ahead or a switch that dispatcher needs to switch for you. The blue icon is your waypoints or check points when it says go via on the top left you keep going, you only stop when it says stop on the top left or something like that it might say pick up passengers when they add it, it might say load up with coal, always on the top left it will always tell you what to do
That's cool! My Grandpa worked at the yard for years and lived in Cumberland his whole life, so I've been there a few times as a kid :) it was nice reminiscence when Gray started the game out there.
That is very accurate model in those engines were made in the late 80s and early 90s primarily so back then they didn’t have all the digital displays that we do now
I've been to the Cumberland yard as a kid! It is indeed large, and pretty crazy how they just roll box-cars down the hill into the yard to connect them to the various trains! 8:25 is headed into the town, and you don't really see it, but the opposite side of that little two lane road would be the [IRL] residential area and my Grandparents' Church right on the corner
that's pretty accurate for the older diesel electric trains from the 60s up to some that are still in service the newer ones are more digital gauges and switch placement changes
Hi Gray, sorry that this comment is so late, but yes the cab interior is incredibly accurate, considering the fact that the railroad based on this game is a real life railroad in America, so yes the cab interiors are accurate.
i cant believe the detail they did an amazing job with the Cumberland yard and all the scenery is spot on im from Cumberland and it was cool seeing this my dad was a conductor and it was like riding on the train with him i would love to hear what he would think about this if he was still alive thanks for making the video im going to get this sim now that i know how good it is
The independent brake affects *all* locomotives in the consist, that is what some of those hoses between the locomotives are for. And on a grade you'd want you use the dynamic brakes.
nobody asked you though, so, like, are you one of those people that shows off their passion, I mean, I'm a pilot but I don't walk up to everyone and yell "look at me I'm a pilot, I'm so cool, look at me!", so yeah, fuck you too dude
Gray the dynamic brake is putting power to the engine but it is reversing the traction motors and you have to put the throttle to neutral before using the dynamic
the locomotive you are operating is an EMD SD40-2. yes the simulator is an almost perfect rendition of the real thing. i model locomotives for its predecessor train simulator 2017 witch is just a little less complicated.
If I were you Grey when you are slowing down/braking don't switch the reverser to Neutral while the engine is moving. Switch the reverser only when you are fully stopped.
He does it again! Love trains and love GrayStillPlays: perfect marriage. B) Will take some switching back to Train Mechanic Simulator since every knob and switch is controllable in this game. :P
ive been subbed sinced 79K been watching every video since, your never scared to play new/diffrent games and your vids are well edited and good and long. please keep up the good work!
Even though the secondman was an NPC I still feel uncomfortable watching Gray do stupid things while the secondman is just watching him with a blank expression.
Lol when I played this game, I hooked the locos to the train and got out to switch a train track position, but I had forgotten to put the brakes on the train so it was now a runaway train (as we were on a slight slope), I was running for miles before it eventually stopped to let me back on. Thank goodness it wasnt at full throttle like in the movie!

dynamic brake turns the traction motors into generators using the momentum of the wheels to create electricity which goes to grids as heat. best used to bunch your train at speed instead of using your independent. the independent works similar to a brake pedal and best used under 15 mph and lightly to avoid flat spots.
