I Brought Home a 250 Inline 6 - Is It Worth It?

Yeah I brought home yet another engine bought on facebook marketplace.. this one is a 1979 GM 250ci Inline 6. It came from a 79 GMC C15 that the owner had opted to swap out for a V8. Yes I could have done the same thing but I want to see an inline 6 under the hood of that 1950 Chevy 3600. to me it just seems right.

Dude that's awesome, I just a did a labor swap for a couple oil changes and some accessory mounting of a customer of the Indian dealership I work for a 70 Nova with a 250 in it and I'm just going to rebuild it and the 3 speed auto trans and use it as my daily driver. We were shooting the shit one day and he said he wanted to customize his bike but he didn't want to ride it an hour to have it put it on every time he got a new part and since we lived in the same town how much would I charge him to do it on my days off and I jokingly said I'd do it in trade for the Nova he had sitting in the yard and he looked at me and said throw in 2 oil changes and you got a deal. It runs and drives great, needs some brake work and it needs some body work and paint along with some general clean-up but I couldn't turn that down. I got a 70 nova and it only cost me about 10 hours of work at $50 per shop hour that I would be doing anyway if he bought it into the shop and he got pretty much free labor to make his bike look better, that's a win-win.

If you mate that with the rest I listed, you end up at about 30.3:1 in low/low. That's 1.7mph in 1st low at idle and 70 on the freeway is under 2900 rpm (29" tires). Chrysler's legendary "Slant-6" was a good motor. A great motor. Theres just no denying it even from a Bow-Tie Man. But Chevy's venerable 6-cylinders had 7- Main Bearings. Compared to the Slants 4. Man, that's saying something. Chevy placed a main a rod a main where MoPar put 2 rods on each rod journal like a V-8. Not to mention Chevy's 6 is a mechanics dream to work on. @@NickFortier I believe that's fairly accurate. How good are your fabrication skills? The 250 inline 6 has the same bore spacing as a sbc so a cheap set of aluminum heads each cut in 2 pieces however that needs to happen to get the same valve orientation and then weld the 2 sections together to bolt onto the 6 would be fun to drive! The exhaust and intake both would have to be custom though so that would be where a lot of fab skills would have to come from. You don't have to make the intake out of aluminum either if you don't have that capability to weld aluminum. I watched your Dual Flowmaster Super 10 - Chevy 350 - 1970 K10 video on your channel's home page, so it sounds like you have a welder, see you're half way there. There's another channel on yt that cut one cylinder off of 2 LS heads and welded them together to bolt on an inline 6 Ford 300. He made the 2 intakes out of steel that feed 3 cylinders each and will be running two 2bbl carbs. I can't recall how he did the exhaust though. Would be a cool project for a L6 Chevy build, I haven't seen anyone else attempt this even though it would probably be easier than the Ford. Before you attempt this(if you do?) take a sbc head gasket and place it on the 250 deck to see if any of the head bolt holes line up? The L6 Ford guy got lucky with the LS heads because the holes only needed to be slightly slotted. Cool project, I'm subscribing to see whatever way you take it, dealers choice.
@wasatchtruckfarm
@wasatchtruckfarm 2 года назад
I think I've seen that channel that did the l6 ford with ls heads. I don't think my fabrication skills are quite there yet, but that doesn't mean I can't try. I believe I found a good cylinder head up in Idaho that I can salvage. I actually used the welder at work to do my exhaust on the 70 on a day off, they have a pit that we roll street sweepers over to get easier access to the under side of them. On my 1950 Chevy pickup I'm torn between this 250 and the 235 that's in it right now (it does run and well) I do like the idea of running a better flowing head on this monster either way and a 12 port head would allow me to do a diy port injection setup on it as well. I've got another video coming soon on the disassembly of this 250, I've switched over to a finish and film the whole project and then cut the video kind of method. That way I don't leave you guys in limbo with an unfinished project.
@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852
@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 2 года назад
@@wasatchtruckfarm Just so you're aware, the 235 is a different engine platform than the 250 is so an altered set of sbc heads won't fit on the 235. The 235 has an weird alternating bore center of 4.1875"/4.375"/4.1875"........ and the 250 has a bore center dimension of 4.400" on all cylinders just like the sbc engine platform. There is a bigger Chevy L6, the 292 that is similar to the 250 with the same bore spacing that will look closer to the 235 because both of the have a taller deck height of 10.875" while the 250 is only 9.150" tall. Plus the extra cubes of the 292 would benefit from the extra air flow if you went this way if you could even find a 292? The 250 would give a little more hood clearance for the custom intake though if you stick with this build, which would be understandable because you already have this one. So if you take 250 and divide by 6 then times it by 8, this would give you an idea of what kind of air flow, runner CCs and chamber size the sbc heads you source should have. If you have any questions or need any help if you're interested in doing this, feel free to ask, I'm happy to help anyway I can.
@Texassince1836
@Texassince1836 2 года назад
The 250 may share the 4.4 inch bore spacing, BUT the SBC is 5 bolts per cylinder and the 250 is 4 headbolts per cylinder. Its a good bit of machining to get the bolt holes setup
@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852
@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 2 года назад
@@Texassince1836 Maybe but probably still doable? With the dowels in the right spot and if the holes don't line up, as long as there is enough room to drill and tap the holes where they need to be, you're golden. If some of the holes line up all the better but make sure before you buy heads. If you have a used sbc head gasket to use to line up on the block, that will tell you if it can be done. If you make a drill bushing and use a long drill to start the holes they should be good and straight to torque the head down. Make sure to use a 7/16-14 tapered hand tap to tap the holes because those are easier to get them to go in straight. It will take some work if the holes look like they can be drilled on location and IMHO I think the juice would be worth the squeeze.
