With hindsight, this is how it went: Bro walked onto a stage in front of a bunch of pros who excel in being emotionless. They are told specifically not to laugh. This man still made some of them crack.
@@tomasflathartaOh for sure I was thinking the same thing. Comedy really relies on the energy of the person telling the joke and if he’s in a crowd literally paid to be emotionless it probably has an effect on his performance and all that, but damn man like when he started undoing the belt while the crowd was dead silent I was just like “Oh no…”
Seriously. I'm friends with a bunch of comics and go to comedy shows all the time. This would be a great test for any comedian. Can you crack the mimes?
I was one of the mimes (up front left), and it was *very* difficult to keep a straight face when Jay was up. Dude is really funny. I'm glad he came back out too! Class act dude!
@@JakeBeatz Totally. I initially thought they all knew each other and that it was a joke between friends. Jay did well, though. I would have also been disappointed to find out a job I was hired for was fake.
He saw his career being taken away by stupidity and got pissed off rightfully but he was open to self-reflect on the whole situation through other's opinions and re-evaluate, good man right there
@@user-xl9dc1kx3zHe was worried that the footage of him making jokes and getting 0 reactions will cause his contracts and his job of being a comedian being taken away from him, a job he does to provide for his family (as he stated in the ending, which was more than enough to justify his upset reaction).
@@user-xl9dc1kx3z If you listen carefully he gets it that it was a prank, He's just worried about what part will be uploaded on RU-vid. He's worried that there'll be a video of him (that will show up above all of his other work fyi) in which he keeps trying to make jokes but Audience is not responding at all, not laughing at all which may imply to a possible client that he's probably not Very good. His reaction is justifiable and I felt really really bad for him but He really was a great sport for standing there and finishing his gig.
@@user-xl9dc1kx3zWhat? He took the joke fine in the end. He explained why the joke could have ruined his career perfectly clear, pay attention wise guy
I think this would've been even funnier if it had been silent the whole time. Have the first two comics come back and be like, "this crowd is dead man, it's horrible". Build up the dread for Jay, "why is no one laughing?" and then he finally comes out and it's because they're fucking mimes.
Wait they’re not all doing this with mimes? I’m fast forwarding then cuz I only came for the mime bit, I thought this was like one of those method acting challenges or something
Listen, any event organizer would respect that: (1) Jay was actually funny (2) Jay completed his contractual obligation under absurd work conditions 😂 (3) Jay apologized for what was already an understandable reaction He’s a stand up guy.
Jay must make that experience he had with the mimes and turn it into joke like: "There was a bunch of Silent mime as an audience and Oh boy... they're speechless"
He complimented the hat, he gave him advice thinking he was a first time comedian and pumped him up wishing him luck… this guy is so nice. Then he was so funny. I feel bad for him for having been given such a hard time. He is probably never going to agree to perform in this theatre ever again.
This is so true. He seems so sweet, i wanna cry. But with this hard situation he proved how amazing he is as a person and as a comedian. Seriously. What a man. He did so well.
This feels like those nightmares you have as a kid. It has the potential to be traumatizing. Still, Jay managed to make me crack my ass off with the jokes.
He sounded cocky and full of himself to me. Dude barely has 500 followers on Instagram but acts like he's a star. I've heard funnier stuff from 5 year olds. His attitude when finding it was a prank just sealed my dislike for him.
@@djElectroFist he thought they were gonna air this to make him look bad with a dead audience. I'd be fucking pissed if I thought someone was trying to sabotage me that way, he had every right to be angry.
Jay was really good, the piñata joke "We had to kick my uncle in the balls until he gave us candy" was great. Guarantee it wouldve been especially great with a good laughing audience.
I was so dead there, I guess some have a stronger imagination than others but it's funny, they guy did great, he over did it considering the circumstances.
I want to see a whole show with Jay Hewlett as the judge called "Break the Mimes" where they get comedians to do this exact thing and score them based on how many mimes they can get to nod/crack/laugh. Awesome concept, great prank, but a brutal thing to do to an unsuspecting dude. Mad props to Jay for delivering a great set, under the worst situation possible. I am now a fan.
I'm not just saying this to say this but Jay is actually pretty funny. The joke about "Son if you masturbate too much, you'll go blind" "dad I'm over here" is frickin' hilarious. I love this dude. Please don't lose hope Jay, I'll be following your career with great interest.
“People are going to look me up for other gigs” oh, absolutely! I was laughing my ass off!!! Not because of this prank but because of your fakking great jokes!!! 😂😂😂 “Dad, I am over here!” 😂😂😂
@@shockafter7 oh how would you feel when you finally get a gig and everyone is cheering for the comedian, and then you walk on podium and see a bunch of mimes and you proceed to eat dogwater for who knows how long thinking you're just gonna be a failure for the rest of your life as comedian(because he said that in the videocall). It didn't turn out that way of course but just imagine that something you take so serious gets laughed off (no pun intended).
@@gigachad3689 he had a room full of mimes. It clearly was a joke. If it was the same audience instructed not to laugh, that would be cruel. You can tell what kind of guy he is by his jokes, talking about being beaten by a belt as a kid and then acting all agro and staunch over a prank coz it hurt his ego. Fuck that guy.
After the first few lines, jay looks at his watch "oh boy" He just keeps going like a legend... Dude. Hearing those jokes without 2nd hand laughter is awesome In a way.
Without laughter, the show felt quite melancholy. Being able to share such stories with each other and find humor in them is the real therapeutic strength of comedy.
Yeah, without the laughter it felt like listening to an older uncle or grandpa, or a a father in law, as he reminiscences on the past, and that was hilarious even without an audience laughing.
@@mashy712 Mastering the art of silent listening is simpler than you might think. Picture yourself back in high school, trapped in the most mind-numbing class with the dullest teacher imaginable. Remember how their words would drone on endlessly, never quite penetrating your consciousness? That's the mental state you're aiming for, but with purpose. The key is to cultivate this mindset intentionally, allowing words to glide through your ears without ever taking root in your mind. It's about perfecting the ability to hear without truly listening, letting language wash over you like white noise.
Jay's a rock star. Don't forget, he just got done standing there for 10 minutes in front of a dead crowd with every worst case scenario going through his mind, it's going to take more than 10 minutes for his mind to snap back from that. That he did his full time in the middle of being surprised with every performer's worst nightmare says so much about him. This is the guy you want to hire. 👍
That is a mean prank to play on someone you don't know... When he later talks about how he was afraid that this gig would ruin is career, if people thought he would realy bomb.
I get that, but like all things that we are passionate about, when it becomes our source of income, a lot of the original passion is lost. If he were a fresh comedian, and not so polished in his jokes, he might have been able to play off that audience by doing some mine sh** with them… cast a fake line and reel one up on stage, or something. He might not see it, but this prank was a gift in disguise. I hope that he does great in his craft after this.
1.7 million views jay just got a big boost and i’m glad he turned light hearted at the end. Fighting the prank would have been bad PR. Now everyone loves him for respecting the prank in the end.
This video is conflicting. It's so cruel and sadistic but my god, he is a class act. The uncle joke and the masturbating dad joke got me giggling even with the dead crowd, very well written.
14:55 'You taking food out of my mouth...' and essentially away from his family. The host responds mildly repugnant. But that's the point!!! Snide skits like this can destroy valid comics such as him.
I was legit laughing at Jay’s jokes, friggin’ gold. It definitely reinforces his talent, I’m thankful for this video because it exposed me to a new comic
It would have been interesting to have the mimes silently laugh or react like typical audience. Maybe even have a mime heckler and the others react. Lol
Agreed, mimes can still mime! The fact that they did nothing was disappointing and ultimately cruel. They were punching down and that’s shit comedy.. give Jay something to work with. But despite that massive disadvantage he still delivered. Pro..
For real the video portrayed mimes all wrong, they have emotions and a sense of humor, they just can't make any sound of it! They can laugh and clap and slap their knees and stomp their feet, but silently!
So just being brutally honest, Jay wasn’t a good sport about it. His comedy was good, though he did seem a little full of himself in his comments before and after the show. Even if he was more okay with it after the fact, that doesn’t change his behavior during the prank. Not suggesting he didn’t have the right to be upset, but the way he showed he was upset was reminiscent of a child having a temper tantrum. Another channel pulled the same prank on Lewis Spears, but they didn’t dress the audience as mimes, and they did it at a venue he has performed for before and enjoyed performing at, so he didn’t even know it was a prank till the reveal. Jay knew it was a prank, everyone was dressed as mimes, whereas Lewis thought he was just absolutely bombing the show. Granted, Lewis did get legitimately upset initially, but even when he was legitimately upset instead of raging, he came back out on stage and made jokes of it, and when he found out it was being filmed he wasn’t even upset. Not saying anyone is a better comedian than anyone, but I am saying the way Lewis handled such a prank was way more mature and graceful.
Jay did great. Extremely professional, had some good jokes, even got a mime to crack a little. Making a mime break character shows you're good. It's definitely one of those pranks you'd rather hear about than get pulled on you, but it makes a great story. Plus you could always prank your comic friends the same way.
I REALLY appreciate the fact you guys showed a portion of your call with him and let him explain himself. It seems like he really got inside his own head. I get the impression that when he got out there and saw all of the mimes, he realized he was being pranked but didn't want to run into an issue where he could later be accused of reneging on his contract. He did his set-- and he did it well-- but it's easy to see how demoralizing that is to stand up in front of a silent crowd. Maybe he thought, "Well, I'm gonna defy expectations. I'm gonna pull a miracle here and make the mimes laugh!" But they are professionally silent. So then he maybe starts playing out various worst-case scenarios in his head-- edited clips that show him performing in front of a full crowd that, nonetheless, remains completely silent. And when you start thinking like that, it really becomes a downward spiral and can be really hard to take a step away from it and realize how absurd the whole thing is. And then, as he said, a few days go by, and he gets some breathing room, and he can see the intent was not malicious and that he wasn't the best version of himself. All of that is to say, I get where he's coming from. I'm glad you guys cleared the air with him. I would absolutely love it if he included this experience in one of his future sets-- I laughed my ass off, and I admired his commitment to the set, but I'm not gonna lie every time the camera cut back to the mimes I absolutely lost it.
This is a perfect example to show that professional comedians are not all goofy, charismatic, and easygoing. We may think that because he is a comedian he would laugh, have fun and go along with the prank, unfortunately he just got angry. Some comedians have a more serious personality and are still excellent professionals.
“Unfortunately”? What if you came home to someone pranking that your wife or girlfriend is getting smashed, and you “unfortunately” get upset? What kind of response is that? He has the right to respond how ever he wants. He was professional about it, so kudos to him.
@@wendufeng It was pretty thin skinned. He knew right away that it was a gag, WHICH IS STILL A PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM IN FRONT OF AN EVEN BIGGER AUDIENCE, and he absolutely refused to get into it. He didn't for one moment even try to play along; he was not joking when he said he had completed his contractual obligation.
He was right in every way to be upset. Then he realized after a few days that this actually helped his career. Any one with and understanding mind will see this. And great! On his part for recognizing that!
@wendufeng I only say unfortunately because having a laugh and going along with the prank is generally a better outcome than getting angry. Not saying he didn't have the right to get angry. Some people are inclined to get angry, others to have fun with it. Which goes along exactly to my point, not all comedians are goofy and would just have fun with it. It is a preconception people generally have. Once again, a great example of that.
This was so hard to watch but what an absolute pro. I can’t imagine how difficult that must have been. I hope he got paid wayyyyy more than his asking price, he deserved it.
I think his heart broke when he didn't hear laughter. His whole life he has been making people laugh and just broke his heart when there wasn't any. I think it is a mean joke
the fact that he got one of them to crack a slight smile says A LOT!!!! dont let that get to you instead take that accomplishment with you on to the next show! :)
This guy is amazing! He truly deserves our support. It takes a great person to handle a situation like that, and he still gave an incredible performance. Despite thinking it was a cruel joke to sabotage his career, he stayed professional and finished his set. His reaction backstage showed his disappointment, but he handled it with grace and even apologized for his initial reaction. If it had been anyone else, they might have reacted much more rudely. I wish him all the best; he really proved his passion and dedication
Jay Hewlett, If I was in the crowd, I would have ruined the prank by being a laughing mime. I could relate to all your emotions and you have a new fan. Also, I'm sure you can get more then a few bits, material, whatever you comedians call jokes, out of this. 🎤🎥👏
@@BarnaclebeardYou have to realize that the atmosphere is completely different. It's very difficult to be in a comedy club and not laugh. Unless you're autistic or something.
Hewlett was more than funny, but the way he ran his contract was super professional, and that's what I now know him for. It's good he simmered down. He did well and this is a good aspect of his career.
Wish someone had tried this on Robin Williams when he was alive. I guarantee that no matter how professional the mimes are, Robbin would have them all howling in 5 minutes .....tops !!
If it was me up there on stage I’d be laughing so hard at the prank and awkward silence after every joke. But I’m grateful he appreciated the prank later on and now he’ll have more publicity and a great story to tell for the rest of his life. After all what is most comedy but sharing in each other’s agonizing, relatable discomfort.
I really liked jay. I understand his frustration but me a Random guy on the internet like there premise but jay stand up was great. The joke about the slip and slide nipple was 😂😂😂😂😂. Thank you jay for coming
Jay, your comedy routine this time around was good and we recognize the laughter isn't what makes the joke. So glad to get to see your routine and I'm glad you're getting a lot of exposure from it.
I had never heard of Jay before this but now I am officially a fan! He was incredible 🤩 If it were me, I would have walked out like 5 minutes in lol. Probably most professional comics too. It's a testament to his comedic skill and talent that he was able to go on for as long as he did AND be genuinely funny at the same time! Mad respect Jay, you're the GOAT 🐐
If Jay doesn't get MORE contracts and fame from this, the comedian world is crooked. He did his absolute best, whereas another comedian would've been within their rights to lash out at the audience and walk out of there before the set. That takes a professional. It doesn't take a genius to make an audience laugh, but the fact that he got a crack out of people specifically told NOT to laugh? That's a pro. I hope he gets nothing but the best. All kudos to him.
A roomful of mimes has to be one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen! Under other circumstances, Jay would have thought so, too. You are a real professional, Jay, to keep going in that situation!
