This is actually pretty accurate to how long an 8000m fall would take in real life. Doing the math, the terminal falling velocity in subnautica is pretty much exactly 50m/s and the terminal velocity for a falling person in real life is ~53 m/s.
You fall much faster than that in real life at 4 miles up. Assuming the standard spread eagle fall, you will be closer to 75 m/s. For real highest free fall attempts though, you are usually trying to pass down to 5000 feet more or less as fast as possible before your oxygen runs out, and you will be going much, much faster. The current world record completed a jump from 40 kilometers in roughly 5 minutes - close to 150 m/s average. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_diving 10:24
Terminal velocity is not at all a constant speed. Your maximum speed slows as you descend towards the ground and is much, much faster the higher up you are. This is because the higher up you are the closer the environment becomes to being a vaccume and obviously traveling through gasses is going to slow you down by a lot.
2:06 those Ghost Leviathans knew something fishy was going on! Bacon is making a base to the nearest phase gate. Alterra would be proud. Until they notice Ryley's debt of 1 trillion credits.
Man a base spanning 16 Kilometers?! God damn what a massive base! Well at least the gargantuan wasn't hunting you down in the Void haha! Great stuff Bacon!
@@TheLastBacon No joke this building is 19.3236714976 times bigger then the Burj khalifa, which is 0.828 KM tall. If you drove from the South Pole to the North Pole straight through the Earth, you would get to the North Pole, you wouldn't be able to get back to the South Pole but that's still a very long way.
@@TheLastBacon I'd LOVE to have a series of PDA entries of a man who tried to make these insane bases in game but died because in reality, it would have been impossible. And have it voiced all by you, of course
Imagine dropping from the top of the platform like you did in the video, except you have the no water mod, so you drop from the top to the bottom of the void. I wonder how long the drop would be then
*Jumps off the top of the base.* PDA: Detecting massive power surge from anomalous contact. Energy discharge detected. *Starts panicking as giant green laser beam starts approaching.*
I don’t know if anyone else has found this out, but as someone who explored the void, even past the teleport barrier, I can say I’ve found some strange things -Around 200K Meters away from the lifepod, the sun can quite literally be right infront of you (an image, obviously) but I wonder why that happens. -There seems to not an end to the map, I have went 600K meters, with farplane set to 5000. -Some places will play a weird audio I’ve never heard before, it lasts about 2-3 seconds and is a ringing sound, im sure you could find it with enough time. -The sub aurora command stops working around 30K meters away from lifepod, weird. I’m still finding new things, it could be a cool video idea to cover any of these and / or explore these yourself, the void is definitely a strange biome. (I used the ghost command to do this.)
bro that's crazy! I can't imagine how tired you got trying to build that super, giant Base! good luck when you try to do another one, but this time try to calm down and take some breaks, construction tips
Hey bacon, I think you would love to play stormworks, it’s a cool sandbox game with all kinds of vehicles from submarines to space ships and everything in between. I think you’d love some of the things the community made such as a massive underwater base.
One reason why I love these big base videos so much is because there's little to nothing that I don't know, which means outside of a few major creatures I can still mostly play subnautica blind :D
I might be insane but the fall down at the end felt oddly relaxing. :) And seeing it in real time really made me appreciate how much time that must have taken for you to build!! Well done!
hey, just wanted to say i love that you’re making a plushie ! I can’t really allow myself to buy one, but if i had the money i for sure would buy it, don’t stop making stuff like this !
Not wide enough, next base needs to be from the bottom to the top covering the whole crater. After that the same but including the void. You're only allowed to rest when every inch of the map is covered in Base!
Subnautica 2 just got announced that it will have 1-4 player co-op! However, it will be a game for service thing. Are you gonna make a short little discussion video on it?
Fun fact: the box in the background at 6:10 is actually the Primary Containment Facility in the lava lakes cuz for some reason it renders from across the map and the lava lakes don't. 🤓
Unrelated, but I don’t think anyone truely understands how much of a fluke it was for the Aurora to crash in the Shallows. Considering the fact that the Aurora is a deep space travel vessel, the accuracy it would take to land such a huge ship on admittedly such a small ecosystem pocket of a huge planet is completely mind-boggling. Had the Captain made any move to turn or direct such a huge vessel way from the intended direction, there’s a HUGE chance we would’ve crashed so far away from the Supervolcano caldera that there would be no chance of survival considering that Planet 4546B is essentially totally dead apart from the first location and Below Zero. We would’ve crashed so far away from land and nosedived so far down into the void (since it’s pretty much endless) that everyone would die in mere second from the crush depth. I’m honestly surprised the entire ship didn’t just cave in on itself and crush itself under its own weight when it hit the Crash Zone. Amazing props to the Captain who was determined to get everyone to safety despite sacrificing his own life. Who knew we could be this lucky?!
Unexpected takeaway from this but what I actually realized while watching the fall was just how freakishly, utterly ridiculously large the gargantuan leviathan is, I started mentally counting in my head the exact moment you were 5km above the water and just lost count because the fall was so long, imagine that fall is identical to if the gargantuan leviathan was somehow standing straight from tail to head upwards and you fell off the head
Ryley hit terminal velocity (if the gravity on the planet is similar to Earths) before even halfway to the first "outpost". Those 'Safe Shallows' aren't gonna be safe for much longer! Edit: after some research, that planet doesn't have the same gravity of Earth, seeing as the 2 min, 43 sec fall would actually be about 130km under 1G.
This game truly is something special if it can induce panic in me not only seeing you go up 3000+ meters but to go down 3000+ meters and just see inky blackness and Ghost leviathans.
Back in many of the older updates/builds, like, around 2020-2021, you could go to the mountain island with a propulsion cannon and fly, command free, just by standing on the broken tablet (and it only works with the broken one) and using the cannon to move it. They patched this one the same time they patched the broken tablet glitch, but the same time the broken tablet glitch was still possible, if you stood in the captain's quarters doorway in just the right spot, opposite of the side the door is on when open, and then shut it on yourself while in that spot, it puts you inside the wide, empty space below the living quarters of the aurora. Another glitch which is still possible to do in the game today if you have the perfect save, is basically phasing through wreckage without creative, mods, or on console, the developer mode. I actually just stumbled upon this one yesterday in my hardcore save. In wreck 1, if you have the exactly spawn of a laser cutter fragment by the laser cutter-required door in the room opened by handle, at a specific spot right on/by the fragment you'll just phase into the floor.
Awesome! I was concerned there for a bit that you would hit one of the observatories on the way down. Adding some super stereotypical elevator music might be even better :)
Now build it again in survival mode! Dont actually do this. You will go insane, but it'd be neat to know if there were enough resources in the game to do it.
3.5 seconds to climb 16k worth of base pieces, Riley is a god and you can't convince me otherwise. Edit: That's roughly 4.57 kilometers per second, or 16,457 kilometers per hour. He can literally climb from earth straight to the moon in just under 1 day.
Ghost leviathan: Nice day in the void- hey whats that? Why is there just a dude building a base in my house? D:< Ryley: hehe habitat builder go brrr Ghost leviathan: OI WE'RE LAGGING. Ryley: ........... Hehe lag go brrrrr Ghost leviathan: STOP SAYING THAT, THAT DOESNT EVEN MAKE SENSE!! Ryley: ...... Hehe ghost leviathan go brrrrrrrr Ghost Leviathan: Thats it I'm moving to the lost river to see my son.
The fact that bacon replies to every comment is crazy mad commitment and it makes people happy keep the good work and how many x compartments did you use
As of last month, I actually started building my first base at the Gun ilsand with "large rooms." It doesn't have everything in it yet, such as bedrooms, growbeds, and filtration systems yet.
Y'all remember the place under the lava lakes I found it ! There's a labyrinth of what I believe are dev testing areas It's all accessable in SURVIVAL!
assuming you’re playing at 60fps and climbing one section takes only a single frame you would be climbing at 216 000 kilometers per hour or 134 216 miles per hour. You would also be feeling about 38239 g forces! (This is assuming that every section is exactly 1km)
ghost leviathans are like curious cats theyre annoying they get in the way so you cant do anything Mess around too much and you WILL get hurt like laying down everywhere like small spaces to lay down in they like destroying stuff (including your life) ALSO THE MUSIC ;-;;;;
okay so the terminal velocity of a human on earth is roughly 200km/h, or 55.5m/s, when riley hit the water he travelled 10m below the surface of the water in about half a second, which is a deceleration of 111 m/s^2 which is just over 11G of force, and due to surface tension hitting the water would be like hitting concrete, riley would be a fine paste dispersing in the water after that impact, my last physics class was over a year ago so i'm not 100% on the numbers, but it should roughly be right
Would love to see more base builds or base ideas in both subnautica and below zero. Always love those video's. Or perhaps more creepypasta video's really enjoyed them.
