When I did my hunter/trapper safety course we had an instructor that stuck his hand in a trap on purpose, it closed on his fingers, and he said with a perfectly calm look on his face "This hurts like hell, but it won't break your bones" and went on to tell a story about how he was setting one and got both his thumbs stuck in one and had to work his way free by himself (trap was staked to the ground)

It's funny how the big trap is illegal to use not because of what it would do to a bear, but what it could do to you and then he makes it even bigger.
@Baiko
@Baiko 6 месяцев назад
No, it's because of what it does to the bear. More generally, all leg-hold traps with teeth are illegal in US because it's more likely that the animal chews or wrings off the caught paw. They just cause unnecessary pain and suffering to the animal, with the possibility of not even actually catching it. Padded and offset leg traps are generally allowed in North America (though mostly not elsewhere in the world) because they're more likely to catch the animal, and because they don't cause permanent harm if for example a wrong animal is caught.

That exact "beartrap" you showed at 3:00 is a reproduction model where the springs have been annealed to a level of 2.5%... Had they not been annealed, they would have maintained their 100% compression. Not to mention the fact that teeth on the jaws are fundamentally frowned upon by any true trappers & outdoorsman.. thank God they outlawed the teeth on the trap jaws Nationwide scores of years ago. That being said, badass engineering skills and you gained a subscriber 👍

I've been scared for his safety in other videos before, but holy crap lol this one was insane. Even though the video was already published it still made me so tense. I was just waiting for the unsprung trap to start slowly closing with him inside it, or for one of those teeth to fly off completely, or for him to absolutely mangle his leg while stepping in or out of it, or for some shrapnel of whatever he was shredding to cut someone up, or for the entire machine to explode, sending metal and teeth and parts and coil springs flying everywhere, etc. etc... lol. That being said, I'm still so glad that people are out there making weird and wacky stuff like this and sharing it for the world to see. Now, thanks to TheBackyardScientist, next time I encounter a problem in my life in which building my own incredibly over-sized and over-powered bear trap is the only solution, I'll already know exactly what NOT to do in every situation!

I wish you would’ve been a bit more honest. There’s videos of trappers putting their hands in spring traps, they don’t break bones, they done break skin, they don’t even hurt. Spring traps are designed to hold whatever’s trapped there. It’s uncomfortable but not painful. The damage you might think you’ve seen, come from animals struggling and fighting to break free with their teeth.

I would also like to add that alot of modern animal traps are designed to not harm but only trap an animal walking on it. These specialty ones and real old ones are scary dangerous.
@Isnogood12

No, modern traps are designed to KILL the animal instead of injuring it. It would be hella dangerous to catch a wild animal alive in a trap and then go in to kill it yourself. Maybe talk to a trapper before commenting?

@Isnogood12 Im sure there are ones meant to kill, but there are alot of "live traps" used just to capture and relocate wild animals. These are especially helpful for smaller animals, but they do make them for bears, wolves, and mountain cats.

For those who don't know, the reason you don't want to fully cut off blood circulation is so the racoon or other animal doesn't try to chew on their leg which causes pain and makes it messier. (NOTE: The leg chewing is by instinct, they don't want to do it, but they still do it anyway because they attempt to escape by instinct.) I went through a hands on trapping course that actually lets you dispatch, trapping term for kill, the animal yourself. And they allow kids.

It’s because of guys like back yard scientist, Micheal reeves Willy osman, styro pyro, etc. The ability to create such chaotic neutrals through engineering is the kind of thing that really scratches my brain. If by "getting" you mean that you are in the process of obtaining one. I.e. actually in college for it right now. Shouldn't that be a thing you _started_ to realize some time ago? The ballistics gel test would have been better with a partial skeleton included. I learned this from MythBusters. I'm guessing it's a lot trickier to construct, though... keeping the bones in place while adding the gel... but I know far less about ballistics gel than I do about bear traps, thanks to growing up as the son of a hunter and trapper.

Correction: balistics gel is supposed to mimic how soft body tissue reacts to BULLETS specifically. They aren't rated as a human analogue in any other use case, and in reality, while it does provide a good baseline, it isn't even always a good human analogue for gunshot wounds. (Any number of issues arise, mostly that you need different gel for subsonic vs supersonic rounds- and sometimes just for different bullet speeds regardless -different bullet types, and even different sizes. Though usually the biggest issue is how the speed changes things.) To be clear, it's totally fine to use it, people just ignore that it's for ballistics use specifically rather than general stuff like cuts and blunt force a bit too often and it should get mentioned more that it doesn't really do a good job representing how a human body would respond in the majority of situations.
