2020 was a strange year. I built a cabin through it which helped me through it. I had no experience prior to this, I made some small mistakes, some big mistakes, and somehow got through it all in one piece.

Can't wait to start building my own home. Your videos are inspirational. To everyone else: just keep in mind, a foundation carrys loads and spreads out that load enough, so the ground underneath can hold your building completely stable. These piers are probably big enough for this site, but make sure you do a little homework for your site and soil/ground types and size your foundation to your calcs, and to the climate of your land like frost lines, water run off and drainage etc. Design your own foundation with all the considerations required for your site.
@rafemaxwell4143
@rafemaxwell4143 2 года назад
Not saying what he has here isn't adeqaute, but something to consider... Your foundation also holds your building to the ground and interacts with loads in every direction. A good way to think about your foundation is that it's only as strong as the amount of bar and mud that is in it, and your building is only as strong as your foundation. I poured a foundation for myself this year for a small building that has 18 YDS and and near a metric ton of bar in it. That'd be almost 1600 40LB bags of concrete. This is per nominal engineering specs. For would-be builders, start with a solid foundation.

I've been building professionally for 10+ years and am a licensed contractor. I'm impressed. Some of these DIY cabin builds turn out like hot garbage burritos designed by a three year old Chihuahua. This was not one of those. I could nitpick a few things here and there, but you did a lot of important things right (flashed the hell out of doors and windows, decent roof details, etc). You'll have this cabin for a long time. Oh and I definitely noticed your carpentry skills improving throughout the build. You looked a bit tentative with the skill saw at first, but by the end you looked like an old salt.

Hi, was great to watch this whole build from start to finish, great job. Genuine question as I have no building experience but would love to build a tiny house, what is the reason for building the frame for the walls and then cutting them to fit windows, can you build the frame with the windows already frame out? Also, how come you didn’t attach the frame to the concrete until much later in the build? Would love hear your answers as I’m genuinely interested 🏡

Nice video. I think it would be a great idea for you to add a "lessons learned" in regards to small and big errors and so on. I would have put flashing on the corners before the cedar went up. Also pre-paint most everything, then install. Even the plywood on the roof. Way easier. Fixed windows are fine if that's a design element you wish to have - I would have figured some opening or natural ventilation capability as well. Nice work.

Not to post to be a troll but to help, a few mistakes on this (but I guess we all make them). Mainly on water an thermal…. Probably if it’s not lived in every day then not the end of the world. Flashing around the window and doors will become a problem though and if the insulation isn’t breathable a vapor barrier on the inside would have helped especially in this cold climate. But other than that a great job.

They should do things like this in school. The whole class project for the year is to build a small house. Yano, actually learn something honest, practical and at the end you get a great sense of pride, satisfaction and independence when you look at something you actually helped build with your hands, your hard work and your determination. I realised that when I left school and University there wasn't much I could actually "do". I could sit an exam and ace it, but I couldn't really "do" anything. At least 50% of the time spent in school is a waste and could be put to better use. Instead we're content with churning out coddled minds that cant "do" anything.

It's a great job.Buildings in American and European countries with few earthquakes have few pillars and are very simple, beautiful and stylish.In Japan, where there are many earthquakes, strong seismic strength is required, so I think the foundation and framework are very complicated.I want to make a small cottage by myself, but I am concerned about the strength, so I can only make small ones. I'm really looking forward to it.

I love seeing men dedicated to built things. I do create but with sewing and crafts and make things for my children clothes that would have cost in the hundred's of dollars due to the Southern theme of "smocking clothes" which is an old art but made those clothes so that my granddaughter could wear them after my daughter grew out of them. I reinforced them with a double French stitch on 100% cotton which is the sturdiest fabric to work on and will last longer than cheap fabrics made of synthetics. I loved sewing and I save myself and my husband money that would have cost more if I didn't sew.

It may not have been included in the condensed version, but you may want to install 1/8" square hardware cloth over your vapor barrier under the cabin. With just the insulation and plastic vapor barrier, you're inviting varmints to either live up there or rip it down and carry it away to their own nests.

I am impressed by genuine homesteaders who use old-world techniques and tools, buy raw land for pennies, build in a way that requires no zoning or permits (because of sq. footage and distance from property lines, etc), and source local materials to construct something that is actually in the middle of nowhere. Not people with six-figure budgets who buy high end lumber, have $60,000 in tools with them, and their barn or home is only a few yards away. This is more like a "cool factor" bachelor apartment than it is a legit cabin.

in 1989 l built and lived in a 12x20 cabin on land I bought when I got out of the Navy. after 2 years I was a hermit, only left the woods when I needed various things. one day I noticed the gas prices and was amazed at how much it was. Everything was expenses. when I got home I had a realization that I was way out of touch with society. it was good and bad. I was very health but then I couldn't carry a conversation with a kid let alone an adult. Today that cabin is just a memory.some fool burned it down. so there's good and bad comes from isolation. it was fun though 😛😜😜

Well, didn't even have to watch more than 3 minutes and I already know that it isn't a 5 star build. You should NEVER lay wood straight on concrete - it will rot in just a few years (because of water rising from the ground). You can chemicaly protect the wood in any way you want but it's just not gonna last very long. You always have to put some kind of foil or asphalt layer between the two materials. And that means this cabin will slowly rot and degrade from the bottom where change of the beams is most difficult... The rest of the build may be well done, but that's a mistake no builder should overlook and in worse case - make.
