"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!

Ok Kevin….you can totally make a half loft at the top for sleeping & make a spiral staircase. Make a trap door in the floor, make a dumbwaiter. Some people want to go to Disney. I want to come to Canada & stay at the property. Every time I think you can’t top your last build you go & come up with something else amazing. Awesome job to you & Don. Can’t wait to see what comes next. 😊

What a cool build. Look for star pattern ideas, maybe create it from wood and add lights. Lights that won't create heat. There are also glow in the dark stars, and planets. Or a planetary light to shine on the ceiling. They illuminate the stars, moons and planets. Some rotate others are fixed. Can't wait to see how you finish this build.

A thought, and agreement, with others here. Do a half loft, perhaps 3/4 if it will work, and place a ladder (instead of a staircase) to go with your rocketship motif. A ladder climbing into a cockpit/sleeping area with stars on the ceiling. Perhaps adding painted on glow-in-the-dark stars, as well as an electric star projector. There are even some out now that project nebulae onto the ceiling. So you could have stars and nebulae to look at while laying in your bed/cockpit. This is a lovely build. You and Don are creating a magical structure. I love it! Be Excellent to each other and Party on. Keep your stick on the ice. 🤘🎸😎🏒

Hey Kevin and Don, An idea I had while watching the video is to make a bunk bed or maybe a solid hammock in the cone as a bed. I don't know if it would be possible to lay down straight from side to side (head to toe), but I don't know anyone who sleeps perfectly straight, so I don't think that would matter. Just an idea for ya Kevin. It blows my mind how you keep coming up with more cabin ideas to build. The underground bunker was a kicker for me. It's too bad you don't have an old and established hardwood tree with reaching branches going out in a circle around the trunk of the tree because I would love to see you're treehouse concept for real, maybe that's an idea to think about for a future build? Thanks Kevin, You and Don always keep me interested in the projects you build. Keep Safe and Always Inspired, Matt - Toronto

I had gotten some wire spools about a decade or two ago to play with back before I put a canopy on my old truck. They weren't as big as this one... used them for picnic sized tables... in time I recovered the bolts and rods they were put together with... some did rot ... overtime they did disappear... They were interesting to play with...

I'm wondering why on the outside you didn't make the siding vertical? rain and snow would shed easier; right? And aren't you worried when the siding dries and shrinks it may want to pull away from the screws and flattens out? Too bad you didn't have a copper sheet for the top cone, a nice weathered green patina would have looked great. and i agree with another commenter to make a half loft and spiral staircase. i love all your videos; been watching for a long time. Keep building and re-purposing.

Discarded, given away for free, nope. Electrical contractors pay a deposit to the wire provider when they order large spools of wire and do not get that deposit back until they return the spool. The deposit for a spool that large if it is in as new condition could be more than $2000 dollars. Spool theft because assholes assume they are worthless is a very expensive problem. Just to be clear, the high price is not because they are actually worth that much, they are not. Its high because its a punitive fine meant to ensure that spools get returned for a full refund. If you don't care about getting your money back then the manufacturer will be happy to use that fine to finance the construction of a dozen replacements. The only way you can get one of those for free without steeling it is if it is too damaged for reuse. Meaning its probably too damaged for your use. Or maybe the person that gave it to you is an idiot and doesn't know about the deposit value.
@ModernSelfReliance
@ModernSelfReliance 11 месяцев назад
Or the company that came from went out of business, and abandoned all on site.
@ronsamson537
@ronsamson537 11 месяцев назад
That is also an acceptable reason. I just don't like it when people spread the idea that those are free for the taking. A few years ago I did a tally at the end of an industrial job when it was time to send in an entire truckload of reels only to discover $40,000 worth of deposit has been taken off site. People were taking them one by one over the past few months because surely no one will notice if one or two go missing from a pile of more than a hundred sitting in a field and its not like they are worth anything, probably just going to get chopped up for scrap or sent to the dump. Im not the one that paid that bill, but some people lost their jobs over it.@@ModernSelfReliance
@lethaleefox6017
@lethaleefox6017 11 месяцев назад
Or the company put them outside the fence with a free sign on them... mine were smaller and had a few flaws, might not have been worth the shipping price back to the wire seller... I wouldn't consider touching one without the free sign... it could be they were writing off the deposits... a bit like the pallets for free people do... when I order a pallet of building materials... I do return the pallets for deposits... I am aware of deposits... some stores/companies/people write off if finding the effort to return the packaging materials not worth the time/cost/effort... I can see some very large projects that can bulk return spools or pallets because they can get a truckload together before they have started rotting to the point of being a liability issue if reused ... without rebuilding... but freight costs of some packaging materials over a very long distance to the point of reuse... might be interesting to look into also... if that spool had to be shipped to China (who manufactures a lot things) what would return shipping cost? The part of the original sale of huge spools of pipes and wires might include a deposit reduction if the return shipping costs would make the product less competitive in getting the sale... the materials to build a new spool could be too low to require reuse for long distances from the manufacturer... if the manufacturer and end user are relatively close or if the project is large enough to make return shipping of spools cost effective... a high deposit could be expected... but if the deposit loses a sale it might be counterproductive. Expect variations in deals with various levels of distance and volumes shipped... how far would you drive to return a pallet you got concrete blocks shipped to you, or would you pay return shipping costs a pallet at a time... if the deposit costs equal to the cost return shipping two or more pallets, how many pallets make it worth cost and effort to return pallets.
@lethaleefox6017
@lethaleefox6017 11 месяцев назад
@@ronsamson537 I am curious how far were the reels being return shipped too... a relatively close manufacturer of wire or internationally shipped where wood products would need sterilization to cross borders... I worked in a lumber mill where we had to sterilize loads of lumber being shipped overseas... I set temperature sensor wires in loads of lumber to test our original settings for the kilns to set them up to do that... international shipping of wood is getting serious about the pests that get shipped with organic materials... I could see sterilization of a number of reels for international return being a bit of a project itself... local verses international purchase of materials could raise local deposits and lower international deposits because of the return shipping costs would possibly be prohibitive of weathered wood because of the added requirements to prevent pest migration. Outgoing sterilization of products at a manufacturer, build a kiln designed for the product... return shipping hire a kiln certified for sterilization of that item(s)... international pest migration is a consideration in international shipping.
@ronsamson537
@ronsamson537 11 месяцев назад
I am satisfied with the explanation i was given that they were abandoned due to bankruptcy. Those things do happen. In my case the reels that went missing were all made from wood, the smallest was 5' diameter and the biggest were about the same size as the one in the video, perhaps just a little bit bigger. The dollar value i gave was for the larger sized reels. I do not know the deposit for the smaller ones, just the overall figure since that is what the company rep referenced when reprimanding all the workers. All of the reels were to be loaded onto trucks and transported back to the local distributor. I do not know where they went from there. However, there is an electrical wire manufacturer about 4 hours drive from the work site that does produce the types of cable we were using, so its possible it was an entirely local operation.@@lethaleefox6017

Kevin this turned out really cool. You and Don did a great job. I think it would be great with a half loft with a spiral staircase and then on the bottom floor add a small table and a small chair that you build for the size of your daughter. Maybe a small toy box and then after you finish decorating inside how you want tell your daughter your giving it to her for a playhouse. Also build some safe stairs for her to get inside. Could you imagine the look on her face when you told her that. You’ve built everything under the sun you can think of, so far, except a playhouse for her. If you’d rather not give this one to her and want to keep for yourself then maybe your next project can be a playhouse for her or some type of fort.

I think a good idea for your next big summer project would be a whole Ewok village…a bunch of buildings in the trees all connected with bridges 😁

Nice build ! Put cinterstones or something under the bottom plate mayby 8 -10 of them to avoid boving ,rain water that get under the cable spool bottom may make it rot . Drying up will be very slow without air gap. I would use insulation mats instead of spray foam if I was going to insulate it. If you are going to use drywall on the roof/ walls you can wet it an shape it in a jig to make the radius shape right. If you use partical board/ masonit wet it slightly before mounting it ,it will shrink when in place and then you will get a smooth surface without hills in it afterwards. Masonite moves a bit when it Varies in moisture content over the seasons joints are hard to plaster over ,the plaster cracks . Use a hand plane and Shamfer booth sides of the pieces 45 degree mayby half the thicknes. Also when using sawn pine as shingle material I would rekomend to tar the roof with Pine tar, there are often some sap wood in the shingle and it rot fast. sawn shingle also absorbs water much more easy due to the end grain being exposed on the surface of the shingle, on a higher degree than split shingles. When the sawing industry emerged the making of shingle for bell towers and churches and sutch was much easier to make , earlier they were split and shaped with axes. The thing was that the shingle lasted less time than the old ones , so the tar treatment s Is more necessary on them Than the old ones . Often the old roofs were tarred also tho. You can put pigments in the tar ,use natural pigment iron oxide gets you red brown block colour depending on temperature in pigment roasting. If yo use lexan or plastic glass you can make the windows With the same bow like the walls cut out the window parts bottom/ top out of a bowed Log ,the log laying on its side On the saw. Use a Router to make glass reseses in the glass frame. Actually you could do a window with A cut slit in the middle for the glass then you dont need to use glassing put or glass trim wood to lock it in place . It rekomended to put put in the slit doe ,atleast in the bottom part . Nice build doe

That siding and the shingles on top look awesome, Kevin! Don is such a workhorse, wonder how much would get done without him! Won't the metal cone on top be a bit of a hazard in a thunderstorm?

I love your videos was wondering if it would be possible to make a tiny home with all electric and even internet in the woods, you might have to use star link not sure would just be cool to see and maybe with a bathroom? You would never have to go home. Maybe star link could sponsor you IDK.
