In just 10 days I was able to fully construct a wooden corral for horse training. After years of working horses in different enclosures of different shapes and sizes, it is unreal to have a my own round pen made for horses. I specifically designed it to work for riding and well as groundwork. By far my most extensive filming/editing project so far on the channel and my longest video I've ever posted. Let me know what you guys think of this one- I'd love to know!

Hello friend, your corral looks great, top notch! However, the diagonal brace/board that you put on your gate is going in the wrong direction, for maximum strength it should go from the bottom corner of the gate "on hinged post" up and across to upper corner of the gate (that swings open). This way, that diagonal brace supports the weight of the gate and takes the load down into the base/bottom of your hinged post, where the post is buried into the ground is the strongest and most stable point! As opposed to the way you have it, where the diagonal brace is literally hanging from the top corner of the hinged post, where the post is less stable. Your way, the weight of the gate is unsupported and pulling down towards open corner of the gate. This is a common mistake that I see all the time and for the most part, your way will still last for years, However, if a person or people were to sit on the gate as it swings open or closed you will start to notice a significant sag of the gate that can compromise the integrity of your gate. In my younger days, I installed fencing and gates of all types and all materials and I would always show my customers how I could hang my 250+ lbs on their gate as it swung open and closed without any sagging or weakening of the gate whatsoever. (If it helps, imagine that your gate only had the top rail and the diagonal brace, there is only one direction that the diagonal brace can attach from open end of the top rail, down to the bottom hinge of the post and support your weight, the other direction, the brace supports nothing) It's much easier to just point a finger and show you in person , than to explain the concept in words, sorry.

Hi there! Thank you so much for your comment! Very insightful and I can tell you are a skilled craftsmen! I will definitely see if I can swing that board around so it actually does what I wanted it to do! Thanks again for the tip! 💪🏼

@@HorsePerfect Good, you'll immediately notice a difference. And if your gate sags at all when you remove the brace, just prop it up or lift it to where you want it, before reinstalling it the right way. You are welcome, and thank you for your videos!!!! And BTW, the brace board should actually extend from corner to corner. If I recall yours was a tad short. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I made a comment on one of your videos about the terrain where you live. At first I thought it looked like California, maybe, or Florida. But then I watched a few more of your videos (which I adore, BTW), and doubted you are in the states at all. I'm dying to know where you are in the world. It's so beautiful!

It’s maybe $60 if you already have the type of implements I would have to rent the equipment.😅

If you have this much land and horses but no equipment you already have a strong back so just use that....

Good work. Couple of tips for next time if I may: If you cleave your rails and uprights, they will last longer as water penetration into entire fibres is a lot slower. Of course you can't cleave stuff with big knots so sawing remains your best option. And a cleaving brake makes cleaving smaller diameter clear lengths easier.... De-barking timber also makes it last longer as the bark rots fast and when green bark beetles and such will get in and rot it (and wood beneath) away.
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Год назад
Hi Anemone, interesting tips! I’ve never heard of cleaving what does that entail?

@@HorsePerfect Watch this vid (not mine, this guy is really old school-hand tool but knows his stuff. The bit you want starts around 10 mins in: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ANAxxYFybOw.html Any steel timber wedges will do, his are so old school with those wooden butts that I've never before seen them. Strat at the bottom end at any split that goes through the pith in the centre and it's best if the wedge you use here has an edge on it. then alternate the wedges and stand by with an axe or chainsaw to cut away any bits of wood that bridge the split. You will get wastage, and some split lengths may wind, but the cleft material lasts significantly longer in ground or above ground to make it worth while.
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Год назад
Very impressive! It seems like a great concept! I will have to try that at some point. Here in Paraguay we have wood that lasts over a hundred years without treatment it is so solid. They call it ax breaking wood! One day I will make another corral with that wood when I can afford it!
