Nice video bro🔥🔥🔥, since your home studio tour in SA.💥💯 If I can ask a music unrelated question, are you south African? And if yes, did you fully migrate to the United States?... Just that🙃
Ha! I got busted speakers only one works n it's distorted and my CD sounds great in the car . Stop giving advice when u don't know what you're talking about
I disagree and agree monitor's are better imo it doesn't really matter if the room is untreated or not i use normal jbl speakrs in my bedreem and i find my mix is better leveled than with headphones but i do agree that if you're on a tight budget you shouldn't buy it cuz while it does help you mix better its not that huge of a difference that it would be necessary
Very good premise for anyone that is intimidated by how expensive it is to start up a home studio. But to further expand on your setup you left out the monitor stands, as well as the XLR to TRS cables required to connect the monitors to the interface and the cable from the mic or instrument into the interface. Also it would be smart to buy a power conditioner for this setup. You’d need a total of 3 to 4 inputs depending if the interface requires an input. I would argue the power conditioner might be the most annoying but important investment so you don’t run the risk of frying your gear through an janky old power strip. This comment can come off pretentious but i do think it is worth mentioning.
power conditioner is good if you don't know how the electrics of the house are made, and it's a big risk if you're on the road connecting the equipments to dodgy power outlets
Nice video man! .. Relax that reverb in the future, way too much :-) ... Also for those talking about not getting studio monitors in an untreated room ... myth. As a 20 year audio engineer that worked in actual studios from back in the day and now have my own studio working with artists around the U.S ... get your mix right to begin with, it will sound exactly the same in vehicles. Monitors gives true sound and you need to have them. Don't just rely on headphones. We don't listen to music in our headphones in the car. Cars are untreated too. Get a good set of monitors, FIX YOUR MIX and everything will fall to place on your mastering. Untreated rooms are just social media regurgitations and marketing fluff to get you to buy all their stuff. Put carpet down, blanket the opposite wall the speakers face. It's a start to a cleaner sound. 8" monitors(you can build these WAY less too) and get a 10-12" woofer. Woofer goes center just off the wall under your desk or opposite wall in the center. It's a start and you can build up from there.
I disagree. You can absolutely do great mixing on good headphones. I recently watched an interview with Andrew Scheps talking about how much he mixes on headphones. And the fact is that today most people are listening on headphones or crappy speakers. Granted, it is very different listening with discreet left and right channels as it is with headphones, but once again, that is how most of the world is listening to pop music now.
@@michaelmennies1685 Headphones is always part of mixing but not for full time headphones. You're speaking what he already knows. You're disagreement is way out of context and that's all you're dead set on because you only saw "don't (skipped 'just') rely on headphones" and skipped the part where he said he's been in the industry 20 years. All you focused on was the word headphones and your only rebuttal was about some video you saw and regurgitating about people listening on headphones You forgot we had headphones long before the new millennia. But you need to understand mixing on speakers is equal too because pop music(and all other genres) plays in cars, clubs, tv, movies too. That's why he he said don't JUST rely on them. He didn't say don't use them. He also never once said anything about how lesser mixing is on headphones and you created your own problem by saying "I disagree, you can do great mixing". WHere he say the lesser about them? Your argument to his comment is literally null.
@@REVerbtalk Actually, I am a professional musician, voice director, engineer and mixer and I do the majority of my mixing today on headphones. I have been working in music, tv and film production for 40 years now. Of course working on good monitors works and so does working on really good headphones. In the end, what I am trying to say is if am helping someone build an inexpensive first setup for the least amount of money, I would not recommend they spend any money on monitors - better to spend it on better headphones and a better microphone in my opinion. The fact is, when you are recording your own voice, you can't listen to your settings while you are tracking through the monitors, only playback. The biggest downside to headphones is ear fatigue. Of course I check my mixes on small speakers and in the car and adjust when I hear things are way off, but basically I think once you learn what sounds good in whatever set-up you use that still sounds good in the outside world, that becomes your reference point. On top of that the mastering plug-ins today, like Ozone, are so good at helping keep things under control, it is arguably a lot easier to get a decent mix.
@@michaelmennies1685 Just because you been doing all of that for 40 years does not 1up facts you tried to shut him down on. You saying all of that extra does not justify anything and I got a feeling your focus is personal, there was no need to buck your chest up with "40 years". His sole 20 years is 100% focused on mixing and engineering. I know people in the industry 5 years and can do extremely great mixes purely off of cheap speakers. You want to do it right the first time, you do it right! Therefore, you get monitors. If you're gonna call yourself a "producer", then get what what producers have and you MUST have monitors. Can't call yourself a contractor and not own a framing nailer. Also stop trying to sound smart over the obvious, we ALL know you can't be on a mic with speakers bro I'm surely not going to fall into that convo trap... Once again you're trying to make him sound like he said not use it when he never said it. Yes I know what ear fatigue is because I wasn't born a week ago but your 40 years is the greater so I wouldn't know right?. So I went to his page, heard his music, subscribed because I like his music that plays very well in my car and my laptop. Where's one of your songs you've mixed? Love to hear this 40 years of experience you posses. Save your 1up's, put your dick back in your pants and zip it up, stop measuring contesting him and link me to a song you've done so I can listen to what your songs sounds like.
@@REVerbtalk I really don't get the animosity. I was simply commenting from my experience, that you can do good mixes on headphones, and if I am recommending a system for someone who is just starting out with a very limited budget I would not spend money on monitors. That's all. I really didn't think my comments would warrant such a strong response.
I was going to say the exact same thing. You need to take the shipping into account. You can't say the audio interface is $20 if the shipping is also $20. It's an auction with 1 bid of $20 so is going to be more but the minimum is already $40
EDIT: I also forgot to add the laptop shipping, which is another $25, putting the total at $122 for shipping; a massive 35% of his advertised budget. I calculated $97 for the shipping. So I think "....under $500" would have been a better advert
@Kcee Marzz right, I bet you do the same thing when your credit card company sends you the bill for 30% APR on all your purchases and your $35 overdraft fees on a $5 purchase. Just focus on the positive. Only blind fools "just focus on the positive". You gotta take into account ALL aspects, not just the good, not just the bad.
I am super enjoyed! Amazing stuff you did with this movie, is for sure price did not always go with the quality. "Good quality does not have to be expensive". Super difficult to understand at the beginning of everybody's journey with sound. "4GB of ram, I want to go with 8Gb of ram", is more than obvious, so again thanks for that. My favorite part is of course... "Your PC ran into a problem..." and your golden advice which is a must to understand at the beginning-> "Just don't forget to save!" Szakunec! As I know these principles, I am more than happy to say.... that all is TRUE! Pozdro!
I would have left out the monitors and just used headphones. And a laptop with at least 8GB of RAM (many old Lenovos could be upgraded to 12GB for not much more). Finally, I would have bought the Presonus interface new because it comes with Studio One Artist. The Audiobox is only around $100.
Yeah if it’s just you making music the monitors aren’t a necessity to start. Use the headphones and check your work in the car. Also even cheaper than eBay, check fb market place bc some people will basically give things away waaayyy under value, or even trade things 🙏🏽
Am gradually putting together a studio. I admire your approach and I know I'd be all over EBay if I didn't just come up with about a thousand I can spend. I already have a pumped laptop with a I7 and a Gig memory (all SSD). Have a separate 32 inch 4K monitor. Have a new Oxygen Pro Mini as well (bought Ableton 11 outright). So, I have a thousand to buy the rest. Getting a Behringer WASP analog synth for sure and the Focusrite Scarlett 212 audio interface. The rest is still being researched.... Its fun...
I've been using Cakewalk since the 90's and now it's 100% free. Agree though Reaper is another great option. Also he could of saved a few bucks on the monitors and came in under budget. Great video still and just goes to show what you can do on a slim budget.
Sick video. I believe this could be something able to work with for people who don't use too many VSTs. If you need only 1 guitar/piano track and 1 vocal track, maybe some reverbs and delays, I think it's possible with the laptop in the video.
This is incredible man how u only spent that much. Crazy How Back in 2007 I had a 64 analog mixing mixing board with 6 keyboards. Now I just have a laptop with a midi controller
I just switched from pc to Mac, and Macs just work better. I never realized how awesome my midi keyboards were until the nobs worked correctly. I never luck out on used gear. this is a great video topic. The PreSonus ultimate bundle new is a great value if you're trying to cross the t's and dot the i's. for the lowest price of entry new. its 299 it comes with a mic headphones monitors interface cables and a daw. It's good for the money, but you could probably get a little bit better quality if you got the "best budget" items that are highly rated.
Curious what people's experiences have been buying used gear? I've been told that some items that are more sensitive like monitors, headphones, some synths and instruments, are very risky bc you don't know how the previous owner treated them (unless you know the previous owner and can confirm they were treated well). Then there are some more sturdy items like audio interfaces that are a safer bet buying used.
I believe this video to be accurate. You can get a totally professional home studio with $1500. I'd say $2500 to make it much better such as getting an apollo solo interface, with a shure sm7b mic. The acoustic panels and bass traps you can easily make. With places like Zzounds you can get anything you want next day at your door on a payment plan, no interest, no credit check. Its the only way I could afford my gear. 🍻
This is amazing, most people that make these kinds of videos already are using a $5000 pc so having the computer included in the budget is amazing to see
Used market in usa makes me cry. In my country buying new is sometimes even cheaper than used and almost all the audio stuff is 50-100% more expensive than in usa...
I've been upgrading my gear recently and have been buying everything new. Watching him get all of this gear that is similar in quality for a fraction of the price makes me want to cry...
hey guys just a little tip for the ram laptop ram is rlly cheap but it cost to have it pre installed so for like 10 or 15 usd u could get 4 gbs and install it ur self its not all to hard just watch a vid on how to for the laptop u bought
Sometimes you can get a laptop with upgradable RAM. So when you have additional funds you can upgrade the RAM. Until then you have something to start with.
I recently bought an M Audio Oxygen Pro 61, PreSonus audio face, Presonus headphones, JBL monitors, mic, mic stand , mic with screen all for $175. I also recently picked up an HP Elitebook 840 G3 16 gig ram, 512 SSD, 500 Gig Hard Drive for $170 off of Ebay. It's not bad for a small budget. I'm proud !!!!
Edward, I'm curious how you dealt with the fact at least a couple things you added to your cart (to remain within your budget) were clearly marked "for parts"? Meaning you need to spend money to repair them if that's possible. Still if a person keeps their cost at 1200 or less, a person can still pickup quality gear.
Yes, I noticed that... and for that reason, I mentioned that I had to get a different laptop in the end which ended up costing $30 more than originally planned.
As a Logic Pro X producer. I attempted to create my own list. The total cost was £331. 1) iPad Air 2 - Computer (£200) 2) Garageband - DAW (£0) 3) 2nd Hand Behringer U-Phoria - Audio Interface (£35) 4) Azuxreza USB Adapter - USB to Lightning (£11) 5) Behringer BH 770 - Headphones (£30) 6) 2nd Hand AT2020 - Microphone (£55) For second hand products, I used CEX.
Overall it's true, used gear is the way to control your budget. However, for the laptop you chose in this example, the description indicates "not working for parts only". A decent used laptop may more likely be twice that price.
Fun video. I would always recommend starting folks on good headphones only. And possibly spending more money on just a USB mic, eliminating the need for an interface. And obviously it makes it impossible to come in on this kind of budget, but the Mac Airs now have no fans, eliminating a big recording problem, fan noise in the microphone.
This is almost the exact same setup I have...exept the studio monitors and the mic. Lenovo laptop Presonus audiobox interface Audiotechnica ATX earphone Akai MPK mini For mic and monitors I have the samson C03 condenser and JBL 104.
I think buying secondhand also helps with E-waste. The people that are selling the hardware probably don’t need it no more. If no one buys it, it hits the bin, or sit in a pile somewhere.
Couldn't help but notice the midi keyboard you found on eBay for $25 it said it was parts only in the title did you still end up getting that one or did it arrive working? Just curious because everywhere I look people try to sell them for more then what there worth cons of buying used
Tbh for a computer, you can get a decent renewed Dell optiplex desktop off Amazon (comes with keyboard and mouse) for around $160 and find a used TV or pc monitor off Facebook marketplace for dirt cheap. Sometimes free. It's what I did
I picked up 2 imacs older models but 27 inch and i7 and 16 gb ram and 2k resolution for only 100 each, with apple mouse and apple keyboard, I would reccomend people to but an imac beacuse they have a very good screen and run very well even thought you would be running older os since they are older models, but dont think they arent power cause ohh boy they run better than newwer mac minis that cost 599 each with no monitor and keyboard and mouse, just go on offerup and marketplace and try to pick one up thats 27 inch that way you can upgrade in the future, try to spend around 100-200 for a 2010 or newer model, make sure it has an i5 for more and dont worry about the ram you can open the imac up and just upgrade it to the max for like 60 bucks in the future, I would not recommend going with a cheap microsoft laptop, to many problems, if thats the case that you want a laptop, buy an older macbook, that would cost you around 200-300, that are worth buying make sure they are i5 or more and are in good condtion just stalk the market for a few weeks everyday and snatch the best deal to you, good luck everyone hope you the best ;)
If your on a $300 dollar budget use bandlab in your phone with apple wired ear phones you can make decent music. D4VDs “romantic homicide” was made on it
Then the internet cost, electricity, additional digital storage & backup HDD/SSD for the computer, they can add big cost without anybody realized it at first
Bro that's my dream I wasn't this I see most day's but not money to make my dream complete I still make hard work to do this ....I'm from India love your video ❤️
Hi Sir this is my first time to subscribe , i want to learn how to make sound and other effects of a video..i want to share the beauty of dubai ..i am just ordinary person , using only cell phone ..I am Working as an OFW here..thank you so mch..God Bless.❤️🙏
I think you missed the most important part... There's no room treatment included in that price. Even with really high-end monitors you're likely going to be sitting in nulls and voids and dealing with standing waves. Also those monitors are only rated for 45hz and I guarantee that's a wishful thinking -10db. So you're going to need a sub to mix anything with a bass guitar or a kick drum. I think it would have been a better idea to assume that most people have some kind of computer already and spent the time on Room Eq Wizard and the money on room treatments.
All current set up is used gear bought from pawn shops, which include Navation Peak £800, MiniNova £300, Arturia Keylab, essential £100, the laptop, 2018 HP probook i5 £150 it's not ideal it does not run Ableton at all very well and struggles with some VSTs however it does run Reason 12 upgrade from 4 £150 perfectly no issues what so ever. I was given a Native instruments Interface and a small mixer by friends.
Hi 👋 how you? Bro I'm complete beginner to learn the music Daws.my doubt is i3 core processor is good for music Daws? Can I buy i3 processor laptop for learning daw and make some cover song? .plse , reply bro
Monitors are such a waste of money if your room isn't acoustically treated imo. You're better off using the money to get a good pair of headphones and a correction/room simulation software like Acustica Sienna or dSONIQ Realphones.
Most important gear is a capable computer. 8gb ram at least. No monitor speakers needed. Just use cheap 48 volt headphones and a cheap Audio Interface. And a cheap midi keyboard of your choice. That’s it.
Hey i just wanted to say thank you im currently building my own studio i have most of the things allready here a short list Neumann tlm 102 Focusrite 2i2 A quite powerfull pc ryzen 3600 16 gb of ram and rtx 2070( still need to upgrade ram) Dbx 286 mic amp (probably wont use it for the studio i use it fo the rode procaster i have for some streaming and so on) Krk g4 Presonus headphone amp Beyerdynamik 990pro edition 600 ohm for mastering and mixing Still need to buy Daw problaby studio one The faderport for workflow And closed back headphones I'll use it for rap, singing and voiceacting i did rap and sing before and voiceacting due to the responses of my voice being deep and pleasant . So i hope it works out need to learn mix and masterring So thank you your videos are very helpful
i would use the preamp with the neumann, that way you could extract more out of it. I would say it's a big overkill but it's a great mic for that. Besides that I have a similar setup (at least budget wise). I would also invest in reaper instead of studio one. Reaper is so underrated and it's only 60 bucks. You can mod and change everything, even making it look like studio one.
@@pedrosilvaproductions alright i try it out with an preamp and reaper lets see i have to look it up and see how much of the faderport 8 Features i can use if its worthwile its great to save somebbucks thx for the feedpack really appreciate it
probubly gonna just get the u87 + avalon 747sp and call it a day. i had the same setup different desk and it does sound good but i can get the same sound with plugins so.. idk. rather just sell it and get 2 good pieces of gear that i know will retain their price or even cost more down the line.
