I once read a scifi book where there was a hypermanouverable spacefighter competition between a bunch of different stellar nations, and a whole bunch of them filled the flight cockpits with a breathable liquid so people could pull way higher g forces with no issue, this reminds me of that

There could definitely be dogfighting competitions in real life! All you would need is some standard receivers and emitters attached to various places on the craft and a pretty standard augmented reality software plugged into the HUD. Do it over a big body of water that's closed to boats for the competition and its pretty safe. Would be interesting but very expensive!

What about building an extreme high speed aircraft capable of carrying this dogfighter to intercept incoming squadrons? Surely, this thing has Ace Combat levels of downing multiple bandits at once. Perhaps the carrier craft can leave AFB's or similar in its wake for the enemy squadron as well. I love the videos, thanks for the content.

Once in ksp, I built a three winged plane called the “Tri Wing Terror”. It had turreted .50 cal machine guns and beat anything else because it could shoot anything at any angle without needing to turn. It was also a supersonic propeller plane.

That's crazy, I also thought of a dogfighting sport once! My idea was a bit more WW1 though, since anything beyond that would be impossible to actually see.

Hovering on your exhaust reminded me of that glitch in LOMAC where you could do the same in the F-15 at ~170kts if you yanked all control surfaces at the same time and going into afterburner at the same time. It was fun, but totally unrealistic.

Competitive dogfighting is a great e-sport idea. If Flyout ever gains multiplayer capability, that would be dope to see. I personally would go for the “Unlimited” category with zero restrictions, but I’m sure there could be a category/class that would fit everyone’s fancy.

I think it would be nice to have some after thoughts after the montage, were you share some info about the plane like top speed, stall speed, deg/sec, range and generally your final thoughts

Curiously, I actually had an idea for a very similar setting, where dogfighting is turned into a sport. The base idea was that it was post-WW3 and the UN has evolved into a proper governing body by getting the monopoly on violence. Conflicts between nations are thusly not allowed to be carried out through war, but only diplomacy and competition. Dogfighting is one of those competitions, with a multitude of classes available for countries to compete in and wager their conflicts over. (Yes, I did watch Robot Jox not too long before coming up with this) The classes were BVR/Hypersonic, BVR/Supersonic, Dogfight/Supersonic, Dogfight/Subsonic, and Dogfight/Propeller. BVR allowed the use of missiles for combat, pretty much the only way Hypersonic combat can be carried out, while Dogfight is raw brawling and guns only. The aircraft in general were even more wild and out there than you have gone for here, with 2:1 mass ratios, 1:1 T/W reverse thrusters allowing the aircraft to essentially hover in the air nose down, full 3D thrust vectoring, all-moving wings, cockpits embedded into the fuselage with screens instead of a canopy, liquid breathing and full body liquid immersion. Even the "small" and nimble DF/SubSon aircraft were the size of an airliner, only increasing as speed and capabilities ramped up. So yeah, kinda going where you're going here but turned up all the way to 11.

The competitive dogfighting sounds amazing if/when the game gets multiplayer... we just need to get our hands on it first lol, very keen to keep following Stone's development journey!

you know they do have dog fight simulations that use ir lasers and people can go and dogfight. basically airborne laser tag. i think "air combat usa" is one place that does it?

That's actually super cool. In an attempt to keep the pilot alive you could put a G-limiter on it. That way it has sustained turn at high speed while you bleed the bandit of airspeed. The slower you both go, the more advantage this aircraft gains.

Well, one way to deal with the g-force issues in a crewed aircraft would be to go with a prone pilot design. Human tolerance to g-forces in the eyeballs-out (pulling positive g with a prone pilot) direction is a bit over twice what it is for the same duration in the eyeballs-down (pulling positive g with a normally seated pilot) direction. But of course, you can't do that in Flyout (yet) either.

Competitive dog-fighting could absolutely be done safely using fpv and scale RC planes built for the purpose. Those RC places could even be quite large, but light. The pilots could be in motion simulators with cameras, taking some cues from esports, but there would be something much more spectacular to watch, and more technologically feasible than the mech fighting startup that had its fifteen minutes of fame a while back

Possible classing could include - BVR (competitors focus on stealth) - WVR (Competitors are free to escape, return, merge, attempt to use stealth, evasion, countermeasures etc) - merged (Competitors may only engage after first pass, perhaps guns only)

I think you could have competitive dogfighting with the right pyrotechnics and weapons that are essentially paintball or nerf versions. Obviously it would still be high risk. A sidewinder that flies by and splatters your aircraft in paint, activating pyrotechnics built into the vehicle, and then you have to leave the area and land, with the sidewinder also landing itself, would be quite a dangerous thing since there is a possibility of a mistaken direct hit to the airframe. But it wouldn't be splashing planes every round and certainly not killing pilots or the audience every round.

Watching that thing fly reminds me of dogfighting in Star Citizen with 6dof, but its a damned jet. Freakin' insane! Keep up the good work!

I'm pretty sure the front of the canards are supposed to point up when the front of the elevators are pointing down in order to give the maximum AOA when pulling up.

I wonder what an ultra modernized P-51 would look and perform like while still being recognizable as a development from the WW2 era warbird. I know there's the H model and such, but what if it went further? Turbo prop? Variable wing sweep like the F-14? Maybe even further along like a 5th gen with clear lineage to the old bird. Be even cooler if it had a canopy reminiscent of the B and C models. Bubble canopy is obviously superior, but those earlier birds have some good looks. Anyway. Just thinking out loud here. If you take on such a project I'd love to see it. Keep up the awesome vids.

The fastest unpowered glider in the world sustains 60 G turns at about 250 m/s. It's much smaller than a crewed aircraft and of course doesn't have the weight of an engine, but it does have massive high aspect wings that doubtless act like giant levers trying to rip themselves off the plane.

The showcase at the end gave me an idea for a future video if you ever run out of ideas. VTOL aircarft which land on their rear. Stuff like the Heinkel Lerche for example.

That thing just lives aerodynamically in extreme AoA & instantaneous turn rate. I wonder if something like that could be min-maxed in the real world, using all the various computer-aided design strategies and known qualities from prototypes like X-29 and Su-47.

There used to be a pair of bi plains that would mock dogfight over the ocean by Del Mar CA. It was pretty cool to watch.

I want to see this with 3D thrust vectoring not gonna lie. That would be insane. 2D is cool too, but 3D also allows for yaw control.

There’s a channel on youtube that does kerbal space program dogfights and his subscribers send in their designs. He always changes the rules though. There was a time someone submitted a drone that was so good with a small turn rate an energy retention it mopped the floor against everything and he had to ban drones

The 1st thing I thought of upon seeing the jet is it looked like an F-20 in reverse. By that I mean canard type & forward-swept wings But having round intakes & front fuselage reminds me of the F-104, & at certain angles, the front fuselage reminds me of the A-4 P. S. : *should've implemented the 3d thrust vectoring if you really want the "ultimate dogfighter"*

I know in the us there is airplane laser tag. Where you dogfight those aerobatic prop planes and “shoot” at each other with laser!

For Competitive Dogfighting to be possible in real life, it would have to be more like laser tag in the sky. However, it can go all the way to 100% fight to the death if it is an e-sport-or if the competing aircraft are remotely controlled (unmanned) from a safe distance.

It looks like a mix of a F-104 Su-47 and an IAI Kfir/Viggen. It’s long and the intakes look like the 104. The reverse wings remind me of the Su-47. And the Canards that don’t move but have control surfaces remind me of a Kfir/Viggen

i have the perfect idea: Stock Plane Fighting take the original concept of stock car racing/NASCAR, and apply it to fighter planes, take a civilian prop or jet plane and soup it up to comical levels while adding guns and perhaps missiles

I think the closest thing to competitive dogfighting we will get is Digital Combat Simulator. I like the design, it kind of reminds me of the F 37 Talon from the movie stealth! Definitely a design I wish was feasible

@messier82ac this design reminded me of the Switchblade concept- would be awesome if you could make it a swing-wing variable like a reverse wing version of the F-14 Tomcat but with 3 primary configurations- wings in for high speed, wings at reverse 45(ish) degree for dogfighting, and wings at maximum width for loitering/max lift. The great thing about a simulator like this is development, maintenance and operation cost is no issue xD

The USAF just approved money for JetZero to create a blended body design for a cargo aircraft, maybe you should throw your hat in the ring with a flyout design lol

idea for competitive dogfighting: use lasers like they do in Vegas to play aerial laser tag, have a blimp with spectators sufficiently high enough above the sea and competitors for safety for the spectators, then they spar over the ocean to minimize risks
