It's an amazing top for sure! It has a depth that looking at it from above appears deep enough to swim in.. I'd have to sell a couple of mine plus cash to pay for it and I'm just too old & lazy bones to pack em & the anxiety of waiting on my gear to sell... I'm happy to view it on the Trog's guitar show and strum my guitfiddles from my lazy boy.
I was splitting wood for my landlord one day from a maple his company removed from a schoolyard. I found 14 highly flamed pieces that were already split to about fire wood size. I kept them all and now i carve them. Ive made a few knobs and and a trem arm knob as well.
That top is from another universe. I wouldn't get rid of that. Especially if you're going for museum pieces. I'd say that's an impeccable representative of a great Les Paul.
Could you measure the width of the pole pieces on the pick-ups. I have heard the bridge pick-up is 54mm and the neck pick-up is 52mm. I am not sure what the width of a middle pick-up would be, but if you check it out we will know won't we. Have a good day.
That’s absolutely stunning, Troggers!. I wish I could buy it. I used to go see a local band in the early 80’s and the guitarist used one with a 50W Marshall & 4x12. I’ve never forgotten how good it sounded. I once heard one through a cranked AC30 too, that sounded similarly mighty 😊✌️
Hey Austin, I think I just noticed something and that maybe those pickups have indeed been re-wound. It looks from the video like the wire visible through the holes in the bobbins is a different colour on the black bobbin in the neck pickup than to the other 3. It appears to have a purplish coating to it whereas the others are all a more natural cooper colour and likely have a clear coating. Maybe it's just the lighting and it's a bit hard to tell on the video but it does appear a bit different in certain shots
The cool thing about this particular demonstration of this particular Les Paul on this particular day is that I was given as a holiday gift a copy of *Houses of the Holy,* my first official Led Zeppelin record (not a dubbing). It arrived today.
I'm having difficulty offing some of my own pieces, that one sounds as good as it looks. Not sure if I could give it up, yet it's this guy with hundreds of pieces. JMO
I know that you call it a "bad reissue," but is it a good guitar? I can really geek out about guitars, but I can forgive someone of the details not being 100% period correct if the overall end product is a good sounding, good playing guitar.
What has always cracked me up about the patent number on the back of the Tim Shaw PAFs is its not for the pickups, its for the 52-53 wrap trapeze tailpiece/bridge.
I bought one of those new in 1981. Yours has a nicer top and better color than mine did-mine had a spot in the grain between the tailpiece and the end of the body that had no figuring; the rest of the top was quite quilty. And mine was honeyburst-I like the dark cherryburst better. In the mid ‘90s, I had mine wired for thr Jimmy Page mod, with push-pulls for coil-splitting and phase reversal. It was always a good-sounding guitar, but the weight got to me as I got older, and in 2001 I traded it for a G&L ASAT Z-3 semi-hollowbody that weighs next to nothing. The series number on my old LP was 0101, so if they ran sequentially, it was older than yours. I bought it in February of ‘81 from Big Dude’s Music City in Kansas City, MO.
Hello Austin. I have a question for you. I have an '84 the paul with Tim Shaws. The neck has 378 883 ink stamp and bridge has 076 883 ink stamp. I know that the last two numbers are the year. Any idea what the rest of these codes mean?
@@Trog Thanks for the info. Something else that might be of interest to you about this guitar is that the toggle switch is located above the controls in the lower bout ( like Gibson invader) and it was sprayed vintage cherry sunburst ( says VCS in bridge pickup cavity), and I think had a scratch guard fitted as standard. Still has set mahogany neck and mahogany body though and says ' The Paul' on truss rod cover. There only seem to have been a few produced at the end of ' the Paul ' production in '84 and '85. They seemed to be trying various configurations before finally settling with the studio.
Salutations Austin! This Les Paul has a similar top and finish as the 2019 NAMM show Les Paul on your website, except the wood grain is particularly wild. This one has an amazing, seldom ever seen, wood grain! It’s not a quilt top, but something completely different, and it’s beautiful! I’m really surprised that you have chosen to sell this example, because it has such a rare top, I thought you definitely would be keeping this one for your museum, because this has such an uncommonly beautiful top! I couldn’t find it anywhere on your website, however, it must have sold very quickly! Thank you for documenting this guitar, and posting this video for us all to see! I was very much looking forward to seeing this one in your museum! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸
I played one from this series several years ago at a Sam Ash store in Charlotte. It was a fricking BOAT ANCHOR... so unreasonably heavy. However, the neck shape was amazing. It was like an upside-down tear drop kind of shape and it played amazingly.
That top is insane. I’m glad to see that this thing wasn’t just a closet queen and it actually got played and sounds incredible. I could care less about all original or if the nitty gritty specs aren’t perfect. If it looks like that and sounds like that, and if I had the cash, I’d take it any day.
Props for playing the Ocean a cappella part all through. First time I've ever heard that. I've heard Page switched his neck and bridge pups, to add clarity to neck and body to bridge? Are you taking guesses as to "big" purchase? Closest by year and spec gets, I dunno', T-shirt? ♫ Ü
Hey trogly I'm running a little light on cash and I have Gibson voodoo juju case. I have the guitar too but I was wandering if you was interested in the case alone...? I figured you'd be first offered. Just bc I love the show I'm also in Ohio as well. If not what's would this case bring?
I'm really curious what this big purchase is, you've been teasing us for a while. Is it a location for the museum or is it some really special guitar? Outside of that I'm completely stumped as to what it could be. My guess would be either the museum or a real Snakepit
Do own a "flood" paint job? I believe the paint shop got damaged. During a hurricane and the paint got spilt. They liked the look of the paint they replicated it on a limited run. However I could be wrong. Great channel by the way. Keep up the grwat work.😊
The finish & grain ( quilt ) looks like rolling flames , like inside of a volcano er something ...wow , beautiful guitar , would love to get a flame top one day . Thanks Trogly !
