As a cyclist I really appreciated both of those car overtakes. They were done, as you said, swiftly and safely, especially the Audi driver holding back at a good distance until she was certain it was safe to overtake. I definitely would have given both a thumbs up as they passed me.

I’m not anti cyclists, I’m anti idiot and there are idiots on both sides of the fence, idiot drivers and idiot cyclists! If motor vehicles should give cyclists sufficient space when they overtake why is this not also applied to cyclists overtaking motor vehicles? To put yourself in a dangerous position is idiotic. A motor vehicle overtakes a cyclist, stops at lights, as an example, the cyclist pushes to the front of queue where the motor vehicle then has to overtake again. I’ve experienced the cyclist laughing at drivers stopped at lights etc. as they squeeze past to get to the front and then the process starts all over again.

In the first clip, why oh why did the cyclist pass two vehicles then cut in? As a cyclist myself, surely waiting behind the third vehicle in a line of three would have been the thing to do. By cutting in, two of those vehicles now have to overtake a much slower vehicle, the cyclist. Just remember kids, just because you can, doesn't mean you should!

@tconnolly9820

@@alankemp1970 I have never heard of "Scorpion" hand signals. I put the term into Google and nothing relevant to riding or driving showed up. If you can find a link please do share because I am curious. When I am cycling, I try to use very clear hand signals. Arms extended straight out right or left for up to 5 seconds to indicate direction. Less if it's a more unplanned manoeuvre for any reason. I hate cyclists who give a one second limp hand signals barely off their handlebars because it's so short and barely noticeable a driver behind can easily miss it if not looking directly at the cyclist at that moment. I also do use the outstretched right arm and palm facing down waving to indicate slowing or stopping at times when appropriate. But I have found this to be sometimes ignored by following traffic, sometimes cutting past me on my left if I'm in prime position despite the reason for me slowing or stopping in front of me. An elderly pedestrian crossing in the most memorable and dangerous case. Drivers can be as aggressive as any entitled cyclist and far more dangerous. That's why I would be reluctant to use that kind of slowing or stopping hand signals with an apparent clear road in front of me because an aggressive driver could cut past me perhaps directly into the car I was allowing to pull out in front of me from the right as in this video. I have mirrors on my handlebars and keep a good eye on what's happening behind me. With traffic behind I will not stop or slow in the road to accommodate other cars or pedestrians for these reasons. I'll let a following vehicle behind do that more safely than I can. I'm sorry if someone thinks I'm an entitled cyclist for not doing this anymore but the dangers unfortunately outweigh the politeness I may be attempting to spread. If there's nothing close behind though, I will happily let pedestrians cross and car's out in front of me because it's always better to have them accelerating away in front of me than trying to overtake me from behind.

That's a good attitude. Most of them are just a little unhinged/need a little validation, but some of 'em are severely unstable and willing to escalate well-beyond what you might expect based on interactions with most _reasonable_ people. @@christopherhammond7258 I didn't mean that it was pointless at all to overtake the bike. As a driver you have to make progress safely and with respect to cyclists and others. I just meant that after he overtook then literally about three seconds later the driver had to start braking again. Personally when I'm cycling on open roads and streets amidst traffic I'm keeping a constant check on traffic behind me using my two handlebars mirrors. If I'm holding up traffic in an area where I can't safely be overtaken, if it's practicable I will regularly pull over in a safe space for me to let them pass me safely. Granted, occasionally when I do this there is such a flow of traffic that I can still be waiting for an opportunity to safely rejoin the traffic 30 seconds or a minute later. I know there are many cyclists like the peddlin' micky who will practically have a mini stroke at the idea of not holding your rightful place on the road but I'm a firm believer in showing respect and courtesy towards other road users AND expecting the same courtesy and respect in return. But if you don't give it out it's hard to expect it from others. People who are mean only expect meanness from others. It's better to be disappointed by the failings of others than to be an example of that disappointment yourself.

There are enough people commenting on the content of the video but I just want to ask about the "what would x driver think about cyclists now?" comments Ash makes. Surely these sorts of comments add to the whole situation where many drivers hold all cyclists responsible for the poor behaviour of some, yet the same isn't true in reverse? Why is it okay to hold me accountable for the bad riding of some eejit I've never met, whereas the HGV driver tailgating the R-driver by a few inches on the motorway the other day or the van driver who must have a magnet in his front bumper he was so close to the back of my car (despite the mile and a half of traffic in front of me) are seen as individual cases? If there was footage of those incidents posted and I was to ask "what do other drivers think of HGV/van drivers now?" I would quite rightly get called out on it.

I don't think he was wrong necessarily to filter (or I guess overtake, technically), but I do get your point about it being a bit hypocritical. I guess the biggest thing I took from this is that he was mad that the audi... didn't overtake? I'll be honest, I don't really like overtaking with oncoming vehicles, even on a 500cc motorcycle with more than enough 'puff' to overtake even at quicker speeds than this. I just can't believe it. In order to overtake where Adrian wanted to, the Audi would have had to speed up just like the mercadees, or risk swerving back in too close to the cyclist. Seems to me like Adrian just wants to have a go at people. It must make cycling so stressful for him. I couldn't imagine seeing everyone and everything as an 'enemy' on my bike. It's not right, and also sucks the fun out of an otherwise fun activity (for both bicycles and motorcycles). a bit of a rant, but oh well. Life is too short and fragile to be looking for fights. I am a cyclist, motorcyclist, and car driver. I see Adrians out on the roads every day and just find them completely beyond understanding. I cycle and ride my motorbike for pleasure. #1 priority is safety, but #2 is enjoyment. If Adrian gets his kicks in this way, then for me, it's beyond understanding. Chill mate - you'll enjoy your rides much more. It's nice to be nice.

This stretch of road is very close to me and can be quite dangerous, particularly by the mini roundabout. The road markers are poorly designed IMO. That said I liked your evaluation and agree this antagonistic approach can cause problems for local cyclists like me. I certainly don’t what any conflict or danger so thank you for this.

Ashlrey says in the email that Adrian is, "Antagonistic riding" but many examples you cite are text overlay to a video after the incident, this is not antagonistic riding. It is irrelevent if Adrian has an anti-motorist beliefs as long as he rides safely, just as it's fine for a motorist to have anti-cyclist beliefs as long as they drive safely. Adrian shouldn't have filtered at the first set of traffic lights but since he had there was no good reason for the Mercedes driver to overtake, two wrongs do not make a right. It's true the red van was not yet indicatjjing to turn right, as Ashley says, but this is irrelevent because the Mercedes driver should have seen the queue of traffic up ahead and anticipated having to wait before turning. Any overtake increases risk regardless of how well it is executed. The go by Ashley's mantra of reducing risk the Mercedes driver, although it's probably frustrating for them, should have held back as the overtake achieved nothing. Again, any overtake increases risk and the Audi driver increased the risk despite brilliant execution so that they could queue at the next set of lights. The increase in risk was patently unnecessary. I wouldn't recommend anybody speak to another road user in case it casues conflict, and so it's true his comment was antagonistic, but a pleasantly sarcastic, "good job," is hardly offensive.

Any motorist would have stopped to let the car that was emerging from the right, complete the turn safely. but no, typical entitled cyclist just blasts through, assuming the car has seen him & will not pull out.

I would have looked to slow or stop to let the car out and free up traffic going the other way, but few do. Impatience isn’t confined to cyclists - the car following didn’t let them out either. Adrian shows very poor cycling skills and an even worse attitude in this video but most cyclists and the huge majority of car drivers I encounter are not a problem in the slightest. Unfortunately you get the occasional idiot, irrespective of their chosen mode of transport.

0:22 Right from the start, seems to me he feels superior to car drivers. So he's going to be very uncharitable when trying to understand what the people around him do. 0:26 Overtaking cars on the right on a bicycle when you're not turning right is asking for trouble. Also, he knows those cars all go faster than him. He's criticising drivers for trying to get ahead, but he does the exact same thing here. What did he gain by overtaking those two cars? He's just placing himself in danger by creating two more overtakes that didn't need to happen. 0:43 There it is. Narrowmindedness. Now, we cannot know why that Mercedes accelerated in such a manner, but I can come up with at least one perfectly valid reason: spending as little time as possible side by side with a cyclist. Being ahead vastly reduces risk for the cyclist in case he falls for whatever reason. But sure, let's pretend like they're subhuman or something... 0:56 Absolutely disgraceful behaviour. I've seen behaviour like this before, when you see those oafs in a zoo, making noises and faces at the animals. 1:45 Riding in the middle of the lane for no reason. 2:05 More obnoxious behaviour. My assessment: He should take the bus next time. And the one after that. And every time after. And he is not fit to be a councillor. How can someone represent his community and his constituents when he sees them as something akin to animals?

A better question would be why? You know you’re just going to hold up every single car you pass afterwards and cause people to perform overtakes. Seems like a dick move tbh, but never in this clip does the guy say you shouldn’t do it, only that its as pointless, although id argue more pointless, than the cars overtaking the cyclist only to wait at a red light.

25 seconds in, cammer is doing a MGIF, stationary cars so lights could be about to change, just why put yourself in that position unless you were going to turn right, you've gained nothing excepting to put yourself in a less safe position. And after that you've moved from the left to the right only being able to do so because of the right turning vehicles 1:09, positioning onto the rbt is terrible, gone over the rbt and then moved to the far left, if you want to prevent an overtake on a rbt and have a good safe position through the exit, take the lane (primary) and remain there through the exit, you're all over the place! 1:47, they won't overtake you because you're erratic, you shouldn't ride closer to the parked cars to invite it, it's on the driver to decide when to overtake, not you. And when they overtook gave you loads of space. I've been critical of AN on a few occasions, but this video proves to me the cammer is someone I'd be having a chat with if I was pulling up next to you at the next set of lights, IF you weren't filtering offside to do a MGIF of course! Staying behind the 3 cars in front would have meant a much smoother, less entangled journey, I wonder how this person drives a car?

It's not his cycling that demonstrates a poor attitude here, it's entirely the backchat for the benefit of viewers and the drivers where he gets a chance. I'm speculating here, but maybe Adrian believes that the privately-owned motor car has social costs and limitations that will ultimately see its demise as a mode of transport. I think he'd be right. But if he does think like that, he's deluded if he thinks that posting videos of his attempts to shame motorists on to bicycles will win him even an honourable footnote in that history. If that's not his motivation, he probably just needs to grow up.

I get Adrian. He's like me, I suspect. Uses his bike daily as his main form of transport. He sees and is the victim of awful driving routinely which is a real physical danger to him. Personally I expect closes passes on the 30mph ring road, and expect taxi drivers intimidating me for using the primary position and I expect being 'doored' by parked cars. It changes your mindset. Its stressful and I feel like giving up - I'm being bullied off the road by cosseted and entitled motorists in two tonne metal boxes. Here's my challenge to AN or anybody else out there: use a bike for your main form of transport for a week. Leisure and casual cycling feels different to commuting for me. Finally, the car that took me out with a left hook was an Audi. He threatened to punch me (I'm nearly sixty) and had the kids on board badge in the rear of his vehicle.

Incidentally, If an electric vehicle with two wheels can exceed 15mph, and/or doesn't need to be peddled for the electric motor to be engaged then it's legally a moped or m/cycle and the rider needs a helmet, tax, Insurance, etc, so delivery riders are nothing to do with me and you shouldn't compare yourself or me to them any more than you would compare me to a motorcyclist.

4:53 Overtake here? no? I wouldn't have overtaken there either to be honest. You can't see the left side of the crossing to see if anyone is waiting. Imagine the uproar Adrian would cause if the Audi over took at this point as he suggests to then have the crossing change and have to stop. Would Adrian let the driver back to the left or do we think he would force the driver to stay on the wrong side?
