The idea that someone allows their own suffering till death so something great and redeeming can happen to others. The final scenes on the last episode make this point more clear. Whatever happens to Rust in the end is something inspired by this saying.

@@P0P0_xyz288 TD is an anthology show, and the other 2 seasons of TD were nowhere near the level of season 1. Season 1 of TD will forever be the greatest season in TV history. It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen in TV history, and I’ve seen all the greats.

@@shiwoshiwofr Actually you are right, I had been saying best “season in TV history,” but actually if you think about it, TD is an anthology show right, so regardless of whether the creators wanted to do a sequel or not, they couldn’t have really as anthology shows always have different actors telling different stories in every new season, so it could only have ever been Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in one season regardless, therefore those 8 masterful episodes in season 1 is an entire show and not just a season like you’d get in non-anthology shows. All the events take place between 1995 - 2002 & 2012, with some brief scenes in 2000 and 2010.

I think what's interesting is Rust _is_ faking. He pretends not to care about the world, that there's nothing worth saving, but he's the one who cares the _most._ He's the only one who never gives up on the Dora Lange case after they kill LeDoux, and he's the one who goes the greatest lengths to catch them. He deeply wants relationships with people but doesn't know how to have them anymore. His philosophy is a defense mechanism to the horrors he's witnessed, but deep inside he doesn't believe what he's saying, and that's what makes him an even more interesting character.

The world needs broken men tho, and I mean it. Soldiers, cops, paramedics, we need people with that type of drive and tragic existence to protect the rest of us. There's for sure something to admire about the character, not to the point of idolizing him or praising his way of life, for sure, I agree with you, but you can still admire the impact on society a broken tragic character still had.

I like him because of his depressed, broken and tragic character. I'm not in the same sense as tragic, but I feel a sense of relatability with his depressed and broken state. Other men who 'relate' will say stuff like "Rust Cohle is so Sigma", "I admire him" while ignoring to say that they themselves only feel this way is because they're also depressed. It's a character they can emotionally relate to in some sense.
