I can't ask for HELP | Autism Experiences 

Maybe some day we can all do a Sunday porch coffee zoom meet-up or something. We can all show off our nifty Porch Coffee mugs to each other 😊

There's a lot of reasons that we don't like to ask for help. Part of it is probably not really knowing how much help we should need and is expected. Part of it is probably feeling like we need too much of it. And part of it is likely just how hard it is to know that we need help and express that need in a way that other people can adequately respond to.

I'm preparing to do some recording and ironically finish my beds to plant veggies. I start every morning early which gives me two hours before slowly bringing in people including my spouse. I has been more affective in avoiding shutdowns or meltdowns better than other things I've tried. I still have days though where I wake up and the whole world is just all wrong, but not as many. Take care

Good morning! I wasn’t feeling great last week (vertigo symptoms), so I stayed off the ADHD portion of my meds. Went back on them Saturday and hyperfocused on a Raspberry Pi computer project all weekend. It wasn’t successful, and most of the work ended up useless, but being able to focus over a two-day work session was glorious.

Also, please never stop talk singing in your videos. I love that so much. It gives me serotonin 🥰

Same, with regard to asking for help. I have always been that way as long as I can remember. I think I am getting a little better with that.

Good morning, Claire! Great Porch Coffee. I thought of you this week when I was watching this little eight-minute documentary on RU-vid about a school in the UK that's just for autistic girls. I was thinking, British boarding school for autistic girls? This is my Hogwarts. And I thought of you because I know you're also a Harry Potter fan. The school is called Limpsfield Grange. And the girls who go there -- these are my kind of peeps. And then I was crying because for me, one of the hardest things about finding out I'm autistic so late in life is the grief over "Why couldn't I have known sooner?" The documentary made me think of how much it would have meant to teenage me to know that there were other girls like me out there, and that it was okay for me to struggle with the things I struggle with. Imagine if I could have gone to a school that was tailored for me! The grief was reopened for me last week when my two-year-old daughter got her diagnosis, because even though I am beyond happy that she's going to go through life already knowing she's autistic and getting the support I never had, I still wish two-year-old me had been so lucky.

It was wonderful to have my coffee with you this morning while I sit in the school staff room and gather my energy for a day substitute teaching in a middle school. I've had a lot of low-level anxiety recently trying to organise a big event, so I can definitely feel the need for quiet restorative time.

I'm terrible at asking for help! Since having kids, particularly having one with high support needs, I've HAD to learn to ask to help, but I'm never comfortable with it. I hope you have a peaceful week Claire and friends! 💞

I have the same struggle with asking for help! I think it might stem from growing up undiagnosed in an environment where your problems were dismissed/not taken seriously, so you've learned at a very young age that your problems aren't worth asking help for and that it's all on you.

I'm also having one of those days where I need to rest. I had an extremely social weekend due to my work, so I'm feeling very introverty today. I know how it feels to want to just sit in silence, so I appreciate you taking the time to do Porch Coffee today!
