I walked into Wild West Guitars around 2017. I was looking for local stores at the time, I had become very tired of my local GC. The staff there were SUPER nice and the selection made it perfectly clear I was in a store far above my purchasing power, multiple NAMM fenders, Suhr's, Gibsons, and some cool MusicMan basses too.
I think it’s more comfortable than most. Dead weight like a vintage sg, but with a les Paul natural body. Plus, the best ones had the harmonica bridges. The more valuable tune o matic that was discontinued simply because it didn’t “look” good enough. Pretty much a les Paul lite with all the specs that matter and none that don’t with a much cheaper price tag. Before they did the “the Paul” reissue, you could find late 70s models for under a grand all damn day. Then they released the reissue. A horrible one that didn’t have a time period accurate headstock, poor choice of electronics, standard tune o matic, incorrect type of fretboard, and on top of it, it was 1,400$-1,600$. Which of course, caused all owners of the vintage models to change their prices from 600$-1,100$, to 1,400$-2,000$+. Pretty much like a collector jacking off a dead artist because of their name. Which is highly disrespectful to their legacy and history. FYI, selling a 5150 for 2500$ just because Eddie died is f*cked up.
my dream gibson would be a Les Paul standard with a koa top korina back, super 400 inlays, 5 piece maple neck with a lacquered maple fretboard maybe. Or ebony fretboard. Dont like the wide grain on rosewood boards. or maybe same woods on an L5-S.
I never really got into Gibson or LP's really but I can't help clicking on Trogly"s Guitar Show almost every time it pops up in my feed. Your enthusiasm for them is infectious.
There's a few woods that stain naturally pink, maple is one. If you're used to natural wood before it's deliberately stained. This Long Scale Koa LP Custom light finish stain is close to the natural pink stain in maple. I think Gibson did a very nice job on this.
I used to buy and sell Luther lumber. Koa Wood is expensive and its kinda rare and that is why you don't see it more often. A Full Figured Maple Body is around $500 up and they are rarely for sale.
"YOU WOULD NEVER BELIEVE WHAT GIBSON DID?" I come in expecting a reverse half flying V with a monkey bar cutout. turns out it's a regular les Paul made from a different wood
Oh man, I love that pale pink back with the crazy figuring. The color on the neck and the headstock is a bit more vibrant and too much. BUT MAN, OH MAN, the back is just pure perfection.
When I worked at The Music Zoo in 2018, we got in a custom ordered ES-335 in 25.5" scale. It was WHITE with BLACK Binding and BLACK Hardware. When we swapped the strings for what the customer wanted, the Tech saw the Bridge had an "Epiphone" stamp. Tommy, the owner, said "NO WAY!" and bought a US made Bridge for it.
I tried the Epiphone Koa Custom… boat anchor! I did try Fender’s koa topped Strat from about 15 years ago and it was sweet but sadly out of my price range.
I love my epihone koa. The bottom half of the top from the bottom of the neck pick up all the way down to the bottom of the guitar has a quilt top look to it. To most wood freaks, there's too much going on because there is no uniform pattern, but to me, it looks amazing.
I love Les Paul's the way they sound. But I've been a fender player for 38 years. Say I would love to have one of these longer scale 25 1/2 in Les Paul's. It'd be the closest I can get to Les Paul / fender, I would absolutely love to have one
I bought an insane PRS Private Stock from those guys.... they do go nuts. I was tempted by that Les Paul but decided to go with the 5A 1 piece top they're selling now
I swear Gibson is scouring the used market for the highest asking price (asking, not selling), and if there are offers made, they remake the guitar in the listing, as close as they can without it being an actual remake, and smack a big ole price tag on it... It's working for em'. If they do this, it might even bring down the used market prices if they do it enough, lol. I say flood the market, Gibson.
That '74 jumped out at me, even before you said it was a '74. I was born 18th of December '74, and recently I've been kinda interested in the possibility of getting a "birth year/month/week" LP. If/when finances permit, maybe I'll seek out your help in locating one some day... 😊
Is Schaller making those style of tuners again? Last time I went down the rabbit hole trying to find newly made Schallers with those exact keystone buttons, I couldn't find them at all. Did a quick search and all I am finding are used ones from the past.
nice video ! I was asking myself, What is among all of your guitars one your collection, your favorite one ? The one that inspires you when you lay, the one you feel good with...
The Koa Custom reminds me of a moth ( The Pink & Brown combo ) , like maybe a Cecropia moth , I actually found a Cecropia moth on my way to work today , it was HUGE and beautiful , Thanks Trogly !
A long scale Les Paul Custom is very difficult to find. I can imagine a discerning instrumentalist finding it an attractive option for LP tones on a Fender scale length. I completely support experimentation along these lines. 24" scale length next? Or maybe a 2.25" bridge?
I believe that a long scale Les Paul would not sound the same. The Gibson scale makes chords sound as a chord, where as chording on a Fender scale, you hear the individual notes . I just have a Les Paul, and a Tele , both scale lengths are super nice. But I would not want a long scale Les Paul. Don't mess with a good thing.
Gibson has made 25.5" scale guitars since at least 1935. Long before the Tele was even a glimmer in Leo's mind. And I love the color. I'm most disappointed it's VOS. Polish that beauty up.
This is a prime example of how weird "collectors" are. You'll pay a premium for odd "vintage" instruments, but you won't pay a premium for good looking instruments.
I disagree. I love this shade of pink. Pink is like one of those nature colors like brown, so it does fit. It’s a surprise to see someone do this, but it’s beautiful! Now put a belly carve on the back, and we’re all set.
