The thing about watching middle distance and cross country is the extreme exhaustion of the athletes after their event. No other sport leaves you this fatigued. Such amazing effort they are able to give, a true challenge of your determination.

You should watch biathlons (cross country skiing and shooting).

As an amateur runner who does a bit of everything I find that short races tend to leave me without the strength to stand or speak for several minutes afterwards but an hour later I'm absolutely fine. In contrast at the end 50 or 60km ultra trail I can stay on my feet and hold a conversation without too much trouble but I suffer fatigue and lack of energy for anything up to 12-14 hours.

0:15 "Mayo of France" and 0:40 "Jimmy Gressier of Spain"?! Seems you mixed your notes quite a bit.

Note: The majority of these runners, being U23, are NOT "Professional" runners. They are all Open Grade but Europeans have chosen to have an under 23 age group. Normally there is a Junior Men race (U20) then the Open Grade is age 20 and over. There is no such category as Pro Grade. Yes, some will have contracts that earn money for Clothing/Sports gear or even some Corporate Company that pays them money. eg Adidas, Nike, Puma etc. But most will not have any payments at all. Just perhaps uniforms/kit for their Country.

Excellent race, reminds me of my high school cross country races only I ran at a much slower pace. That Jimmy is one smart runner. He timed his kick perfectly!

Not a proper high-level championship cross country course. Not even close. More of a steeplechase. Man-made weird little obstacles like a sand pit or a frozen-over water pit and little hurdles. Just my two cents but found the whole thing odd. 😮

So him going out at 4 min pace is stupid... but the pack at 4:03 pace? Just fine?

Agreed, not only that, but having raced myself for decades I can tell you that this has been my own behavior and it hasn't hurt me. Yes you do slow down, but it doesn't hurt at the time. Purposely running slow in the beginning has never helped my overall time.

The commentator made me angry... He thinks everything is about pacing yourself and strategy... In fact, the best runner won, that's it. And yes I agree, I was always starting super slow because people were telling me don't start to fast and man that was boring taking over people during the whole race but never seeing the best guys... Last crosscountry I did I started fast and realized it was actually fun because I was instantly at the front of the race

I only ran one cross country race I can recall I did ok but it was much different than what I was normally used to. I really think the cross country was more natural than just running races on the streets. Wish I had done it more often, mud and all.

What date, and place, were the race? Can't click "like" or "subscribe" without this information in the description and also at the start of the video.

What’s the team result?
@JBH123

If it's the sum of the placings of the top five finishers, then France had to have won with 28 or 29 points: 1+2+4+6 (or 7)+15 = 28 or 29.

How does Jimmy Gressier compare to the best African cross country runners? I would guess that many Africans are even faster.

Did you see the results from the Ethiopian 10,000 metres trials for Paris? They went through the 5k mark in 13:17. 17 yr. old Mehary was 4th in 26:37. Crazy times.
