Ladies we are all uniquely and wonderfully made! Gentlemen you too! We appreciate all your supportiveness and hard work! My husband has to remind me from time to time “Don’t worry about the things you can’t control.” He refers to me as his “slave driver”😂 I start projects and I don’t like to stop in the middle, I need it completed as I look forward to the end result; that’s what drives me….to drive him-honey, I need help!😂 Often, in my mind I will project getting 5,6,7 or 10 chores/projects done in a day and my time estimations for each task usually takes longer than what I originally anticipated.

I'm so sorry! We went through this during the pandemic with a new freezer that died. We lost everything. My husband decided to buy a 20+ year old model on marketplace and that old gal is still running. It wasn't funny at first but we have to laugh about it now. I love the grace and patience you extend to yourself. A lesson we should all take note of. Can't wait to see all the yummy things you cook up to fill that freezer again. Blessings!

All my clothes, I wash, hang dry some n dry the others and hang up everything so I don't need to iron which by the way, I haven't ironed in years. If I needed something ironed hubby takes care of that. 😊n he also washes his own clothes n always have since I met him.

Hey Becky, just a tip on the dog food. You may want to keep it in the original bag and then place the bag in the container. From what I've found, the bag's inner lining is designed to keep the food from going rancid.

I do keep pet food in the original bag in a bucket. I add bay leaves for bug control and dessicants to keep the pet food dry. The other thing people should do, but don't always do with bulk storage containers, is wash the containers. After each bag is used up, wash and dry the container before putting a new bag in. This is especially important for grains like rice. There could be eggs in the grain that will hatch out, if you keep it long enough.

One load of laundry a day changed my life. I watched Dawn from the minimal mom and her laundry system about 2 years ago. Now every day, I get a load started, and within 2 hours, our family of 7 has clean clothes that are all put away... takes like 5 minutes to sort and put away. Just some encouragement as you encourage me!

@joanharris8057

It is so much easier doing a load of laundry every day than to let it pile up and do laundry for hours. When we were farming I washed barn clothes everyday because I did not want stinky clothes in the house. I presort my laundry by whites, colored clothes, and grubby clothes. When each basket is full, it goes in the wash machine, dryer, and then put away. Sheets are washed once a week and towels as needed. My husband has always had clean laundry in our 50 years of marriage. The secret of household chores is to do a little everyday instead of letting it pile up.

I treat dishes and laundry the same. Both are a daily chore. I fold and put away each load as it comes out of the dryer. For my teenage daughters, I put it in piles on the stairs for them to put away. If they take too long taking it to their rooms, I put the piles on their beds.

Oh boy, do I feel your pain! About this same time last year, my husband did not make sure the freezer was closed and after a couple of days I went out to put a load of food in it. I was devastated. It was awful, our freezer is in an outdoor shed with no cooling system. I live in Florida and the heat in the summer is brutal. I did my very best not to make my husband worse than he already did, because I know it could have just as easily happened to me. I do not have chickens, so most of mine went to the compost. I had a whole years worth of vegetables in there that we had just harvested and processed. I will never forget to double check the freezer door.

Glad you are giving yourself grace. Life is so fast paced at times. So much going on, so much to remember, so much to overwhelm. But the thought about the flowers was grand to think about for sure. My plate has been overflowing lately and yesterday would have been my husband's 68th birthday and wanted to go to the cemetery, but cold, rainy, dreary and yucky. He loved purple and flowers that attract pollinators and hummingbirds like petunias. The day before a petunia in a random pot was blossoming and I thought of him and felt so good(I always say to myself, that's my Patrick sending that good vibe, beautiful moment). We have to find the silver lining sometimes. What you talked about feelings, even towards yourself was so relatable and vulnerable. Appreciate you sharing. Even as a woman of 63, I can relate to you and the blame game. Never forget the "Grace", because you deserve it, everyone deserves it. But on the daily, grace is there and is amazing. We see it in nature and the animals in nature and we are a part of the big wheel that moves in life and nature. Please know you are prayed for and good thoughts sent your way more than you may even realize or know. I am rooting for you Woman to Woman, Mother to Mother, Human Being to Human Being, what you put out into the world makes a difference! Blessings! 😊❤

One thing that I’ve found that helps with laundry is wearing my clothes more than once before washing. I usually won’t wash our clothes unless they’re visibly dirty, we were very sweaty in them, they stink or we were doing yard work in them. Obviously, socks and underwear are the exception. I’ve found that by doing this it cuts down on the amount of laundry that needs to be done. It also saves on the wear and tear of the washer and dryer, saves on the water and electric bills and helps prevent the clothes from wearing out prematurely.

Becky, I just had the same issue with an upright freezer few days ago. Thanks God, it wasn't a total lost because it was off for few hours, but I understand your pain. My husband was cleaning a couple of things at the garage and move the freezer and it came off power by accident. It happens, not my favorite thing, but it's life. My laundry system goes like this……I have 4 loads each week. Jeans/darks, lights, whites and towels. I wash in that order. Each time a load comes out of the drier it gets folded right then and stacks on the drier, his stack and her stack. When my two kids were living at home I had the same system. When laundry was done, each kid took their own stack and put them away. I know a lot of my friends hate laundry but this system has always worked for me so has never been stressful.

But it was honestly a blessing seeing how you tackled the situation and continued to kove forward. I was wondering, is it possible to get like a latch or something to put on the door of your stand up freezer? So everytime you close it theres that extra security that it is definitely closed?

Hi Becky! It’s honestly nice to know these things happen to other people and not just myself :) You handled the freezer situation very well, and it’s something you probably will never have happen again. We have a large garden that we use a solar panel to operate the electric fence that goes around it. One year I forgot to turn it back on after weeding the garden and the next day, all the corn and beans were gone. I was so upset!! But, things happen, and it’s not happened again! 😂 I love watching your homestead videos. You and your husband are such hard workers and I thank you for sharing all that you do with us. Hi Becky, just a heads up in case you have a power failure or happen to leave the freezer door open in the future, if stuff defrost but is still fridge cold you can refreeze it. They changed the regulations on that quite some years ago. If it's room temp then yes a definite don't use but defrosted and still cold can refreeze safely. Commercial kitchens do it all the time. Someone may have gotten more of something out then needed it's been defrosted in the coolroom and then placed back in the freezer a day later. Hope that helps for any future mishaps because like you say life happens and as much as we try our best to make sure these things don't happen sometimes they still do 😊

Yes, living in South Louisiana, this is normal during hurricane season for us. For Hurricane Ida we were without power for 12 days. We have a generator but, with the high cost of fuel, we only ran it at night. This was enough to keep the freezer in the kitchen and the three freezers in the garage frozen. I had a side of beef, 15 meat birds, 100 lbs of shrimp, and 50 lbs of fish that was I determined to save.

Please check with your insurance agent. You can add "Refrigerated Food" coverage. It's like insuring a boat - it's called "Inland Marine" coverage for special items or items that frequently leave your home - such as iPads or cameras, etc. It's a little more expensive, but it would've been covered at $0 or $100 deductible. As you say, it's a serious time and money commitment to stock the freezer.

Maybe there was something in there that would have made you and your family very sick? Maybe God was protecting you from something that you don't know even existed? Maybe there was something wrong with the food you purchased and made baby food with it? I believe in things like that. Just like how many terrible things we've been protected from by running late or, being sick and not going somewhere. My heart hurts for you Becky, I think I would still be crying over the loss of all that food. My mother lost all of her food from a hurricane a few years back. That started her on her canning and dehydrating journey. She gave me the food preservation bug which lead me to your channel. Before she passed away last month she gifted all of her equipment to me and my daughter. Every time I work on a project in the kitchen I know she's with me. I had a "Becky Win", as I like to call it, last night. Mandy in the Making made a sweet and sour kielbasa via crockpot in her last video. I tried it last night (if was so good) but I had all of this left over juice/sauce from the dish. Then I remembered I was thawing a pork roast. I put it in the crock pot with all juicy goodness from the first meal. I slow cooked it all night. I set aside some for dinner tonight and bagged up two more for the freezer. One dirty dish and 4 meals, Becky win. Thank you for all the inspiration you give us and for showing the good with the bad.

Just in case your washer needs replaced…I’m gonna save you some research time. SPEED QUEEN. Just got one a few months ago and I almost get GIDDY when doing a load of laundry! It is FABULOUS! Normally sold through mom and pop stores (no big box stores) and there’s no price difference in different retailers; if it retails for $1200 then it’s that price everywhere. Just choose which store to purchase it from. Wish I’d had this the first 40 years of my marriage. It’s SO fast, SO thorough, and nothing fancy. I’ve owned fancy machines but they were disappointing at best.

Aw Becky, I'm so sorry for the loss of all that food. I had a huge 7 cu ft chest freezer just die on me recently and I didn't even realize it had happened until about 3 days later. All of my meat was stored in that freezer, including a 15 lb turkey from a local farmer (that turkey alone was an almost $100 purchase). So it was a devastating loss. I'm now in the process of replenishing a lot of that meat. It has really made me reconsider and reprioritize meat canning for shelf-stable protein. What's funny is I have a smaller chest freezer that is many years older than the big one was, and it's still chugging along just fine...lol
