Anything I bought as a kid in the 90s. I had the worst instincts and everything I thought would be valuable turned out to be something no one wants. I enjoyed reading them at least!
Amazing video!👍👏 I just began my comic book collection and found Toon Haven. They have an incredible range of digital comics for every genre, including the hard to find ones. Lifetime updates too!😁
Anything Spectre is underrated. Such a great character. Also Midnight Run is one of the best action comedies of all time and is never talked about when mentioning the greatest comedies of the 80s
James you are by far the most knowledgeable person online about comics easily. It just seems you put more into your work than anyone else does, from many determining factors. I look forward to coming by your store, since i was raised in NJ, and lived in Lawrenceville for years.😊 This channel gives more than it gets. That is why a comic fan, others can learn so much here, especially if they are new to the hobby. Thanks James, enjoy every video 😊😊😊
I think you need to be the Captain Carrot spokesperson; You can really sell that Carrot! So, underrated comics for me (obviously) are all the Robin first appearances (since Jason Todd). Robin is central to Batman's story in general, and Nightwing, Redhood, Tim Drake and Damian Wayne are all major DC characters. -Aside, I Joined up again as member for your channel, happy to pay for that cup of coffee each month. Love the channel, James. Keep on hunting :)
I consider Action Comics #12 as underrated, given that it features an add for the upcoming Detective Comics #27 and thus is the first “unofficial” appearance of Batman. Good luck finding a copy of it, however. 😊
Williamson’s Flash run is one that I think needs more love. Especially the early issues. I don’t get how Godspeed is completely ignored. That story was rock solid in my eyes.
The shadow of the bat run is so underrated. It has some of the most unique and amazing cover art among its issues and you can find almost every issue in the dollar bin.
Witchblade #10, first appearance of The Darkness. One of the few comic book characters to have a fantastic video game, but no one sees past the 90s of it all.
People overlook magazine size books and mostly consider comic-size comics the most important in my experience; hey better for the rest of us! Nice video and interesting books to look out for; thanks!
The early issues of Rex the Wonder Dog are expensive (sometimes very much so) and hard to find outside of ragged or lower grade copies. I assume you put it on your list because (non-GA) comic collectors often don't know about it. I'd add Golden Age Phantom Stranger, too, which is even MORE pricey.
Short run comics are an underrated treasure trove. Yeah, having 1-250 is cool, but daunting. Getting a 1-8 story can be lots of fun and doesn't break the bank.
Gold Digger by Fred Perry at Antarctic Press is the longest-running comic by a single creator, and quite a few of his stories are fantastic. I don't know anyone who's heard of it. The main series ended recently, but there's an online archive of the first 200 issues.
First appearance of Deathbird in Ms. Marvel #9. Pretty good X-men villain has stay close to the same price forever. Or with Suicide Squad #24 is the full appearance of Oracle it only her cameo in #23 ever listed as a key
DC comics Presents #52, First Ambush Bug. This character was essentially the 4th wall-breaking weird prototype for the Joe Kelly Deadpool (the one we all know...not the one who showed up in the early 90s). 9.8s are sub-200 and the character is not particularly popular for essentially being Deadpool before Deadpool (just not a merc).
The Green Lantern Corps run by Steve Englehart is criminally underrated. Besides introducing my favorite GL Kilowog, what other comic features a talking space-squirrel forming an unlikely friendship w/ somekinda fastidious alien Squidward after a flux in the time-space continuim makes everyone on Squirrel Homeworld forget he ever existed? Buckwild plots mixed with heartfelt and often complex relationships makes it feel like Guardians of the Galaxy...only decades earlier and at a fraction of the price!
The most underrated book I can think of is Web of Spiderman #36. Its the 1st appearance of Tombstone, but yet you can easily find copies for under $20 (sometimes under $10) which is crazy to me considerinf how important of a character he is
I want that Captain Carrot! Also, the first appearance of Cassandra Cain as batgirl is my personal Underrated book. Its considered a keym...I just think its even still underrated.
Alright. Underrated actress: Sofia Boutella. She acts (of course), dances, does a lot of her own stunts, speaks multiple languages...and word on the street is she can sing, too. She's cool. But for comics: Usagi Yojimbo. It has a strong fan base, but you can get so many keys in that series for super cheap, and I still think that book is criminally underappreciated overall.
i spent years trying to track down a Rex #4, only copy i was ever able to find was beat to hell (got it graded for fun and it is a 1.8 which i didn't even know was a grade😂) but as a big Detective Chimp fan i'm happy to own it.
I'll see your Captain Carrot and raise you an Ambush Bug...some of my most cherished comics of the early '80's feature this OG fourth wall breaker. Hilarious, at times, too. Could be a perfect crossover for James Gunn's DCU.
Now that Spetre issue is gonna go up just cause of Superman. And i completely agree about 1st Captain Carrot. Its a good thing i bought the Roy Thomas signed 9.8 from you a while back 🤙🏻
I have a 7.5 copy (raw, my grade) of Supernatural Thrillers #1! I love that cover, and I didn't realize it was the progenitor of all the swamp beasts! Also ASM #112 and NTT #16! As for comics that I always wonder why they're not more valuable...the Daredevil Born Again story (#227-#233) and pretty much all of the first Ultimate Spider-Man series (sure, they're not "keys," but they're sooo good.)
The ultimate underrated comic is More Fun 31. It has the Action 1 cover in an ad a month before the release. 1st image of a fairly significant issue/character
When I first started trying to find that Spectre 54, graded in early 2021 it was selling for just over $100. It now sells for nearly $400 in a 9.8. Maybe the raw is frozen? If you have a 9.8 candidate you wanna sell for $40 I'll buy it.
I've got another one for you. The 1st MODERN appearance of Giganta with a new origin story printed back in the 90's is very cheap too. I'm honestly surprised given how popular the character is. She is used a lot in the shows.
@@MintHunterComics My question though is, which is the actual 1st appearance? Some sources say issue 126 and some say 127. Regardless, they both are cheap. Several dollars on eBay.
Star Wars 16, the first appearance of Valance the Hunter, and the first SW story without any characters from the movies. Spoiler alert- he “dies” in a later issue, but was so cool he was revived and appears in modern SW comics
Captain Marvel Adventures 78, 1st Mr. Atom, the most important robot in comic book history, he's the prototype for every Japanese Super Robot From Astroboy to Megaman.
I always enjoyed the first Marvel crossover event, the Avengers/Defenders War. That really captured my imagination as a twelve year old. It was basically Marvel's version of a JLA/JSA event.
This may be a hot take but I’m going to say Star Wars #1 is underrated as a comic book key. George Lucas initially approached comic book companies to publish a Star Wars comic book prior to the film's release as a means for publicity meaning that the first time people ever laid eyes on the franchise was in a comic book. Star Wars comics have been around as long as the movies but doesn’t get the same love. It’s the first public encounter of the entire multibillion IP. I’m surprise that SW #1 doesn’t have more value because of that.
Star Wars #1 was reprinted ad nauseum after the movie took off so it's not a rare book. Plus, there was also the novel! As a fan of the comic, I strive to collect issues 11 to 37 as a complete run! Archie Goodwin and Carmine Infantino produced a wild series!
When Detective Chimp hits the big screen (and I'm convinced he will), his first appearance will go nuclear because it is so hard to find. I;ve been trying to grab a copy - but they are hard to find and very expensive.
it is hard to believe comics like those aren't more popular. but, overtime they just end up in a dollar bin. just like batman off-world, i found it in a dollar bin and still could not believe it. #IWANTCAPTAINCARROTPLEASE
Land of the Giants tv show of the late 1960s was fantastic, alright the special effects were a bit dodgy as was limited in those types, but stories were great . Can’t understand why no one has made a film or remade the TV series. They did Lost in Space which was out at the same time, and I believe wasn’t ax good, even though I did enjoy it.
I've always been surprised that the first Batman & The Outsiders run from the 80s has never really taken off or gone up in value. I'm biased as it was one of the first comic series I ever collected, so there's a nostalgia feel, but still...great Batman stories with great side characters.
Love Captain Carrot and most weird or uncommon series! As for underrated comics, I'll go with The Darkness and Fathom back to my prime of Image and Top Cow collecting. Otherwise, gimme that underrated and widely unknown underground comic collection!
My favorite underrated keys... Legends #1 - 1st Amanda Waller... how is the head of the suicide squad not a ton of money? X-Men #169 - 1st calisto and morlocks - again, worth nothing and my favorite sub group of the X-Men (maybe starjammers) Sin City A Dame to Kill For #1 - 1st Dwight - bought mine for $10, shipped to CGC... 9.6... Frank Miller's greatest work in my opinion
I picked up a lot of 40 spectre comics from the 80’s -2000’s for less than a dollar per book and i was hoping that the terrific book was there but i was not that Lucky. It did, however, include crisis aftermath: the spectre 1, which is when Crispus Allen becomes the new spectre and The spectre 22 first published Alex Ross cover art for DC. So i did get my moneys worth but i sure wanted to have the first appearance of the second Mr Terrific.
#1 Doom vs Sub-mariner #5 Doom vs FF & 1rst appears of Shroud #7 Doom vs Shroud - Origin of Shroud #9 Doom vs Iron Man #14 Doom vs Magneto Awesome action packed covers and woefully underappreciated.
Marvel Comics Presents #117 the real first appearance of Ravage 2099 created by Stan Lee. That comic always gets the first meeting of Wolverine and venom fame but not the Ravage 2099 fame. Have an issue of it signed by Stan Lee.
The movie of the first Suicide Squad, my teenage son and I love it, but it gets so much hate. Underrated comics, Frank Miller's Ronin, Kent Williams Blood a Tale, and Mike Mignola's work before Hellboy... :)
Adventure Comics 283, 1st appearance of both General Zod and the Phantom Zone. Midgrade copies of Superboy 68 (1st Bizarro) are around $1k, and midgrade copies of Action Comics 242 (1st Brainiac) are $2k+. But a midgrade copy of Adventure 283 can be had for under $500. Given how much Zod has been in the public eye (in how many movies/TV series has he appeared since Superman II?) relative to the other two, I don't get it.
I'll stick with comics. I think Batman #619 is undervalued, especially the rogues gallery variant. That variant has the first cover appearance of Hush. And that issue in general has the first appearance of Tommy Elliot as Hush. I think they're only worth roughly $10.
Snagged a mid grade copy for $7 on ebay after watching this, left the higher grade one for $25 just cuz I'm not a huge Simpsons guy...but I just thought it'd be cool to have that one- thanks for the tip!🙌
@@MintHunterComics well, update: looking through it there's only a single Simpsons strip with krusty and sideshow bob, so maybe first official Simpsons comic technically but I was thinking a regular style comic book with the characters. But still lol definitely worth the $7 for the Springfield shopper alone. Also there's a Hey Arnold comic strip below the Simpsons one. I've gotta look into whether that's first Hey Arnold or not.
Spectre 54 definitely seems to have increased in value as I've seen a few ungraded copies where the seller is trying to get $100+ which I think is crazy.
Ill name a movie cause its on my mind that I think is soooooo underrated... DRIVE. And no... I dont mean the Ryan Gosling movie. Im talking about the Mark Dacascos flick! It was the Rush Hour before there was Rush Hour!
I support Captain Carrot! We gotta get his name out there. Also I just grabbed the Teen Titans #26 a few weeks ago in nice grade and absolutely love it in my Teen Titans collection! Great video as always!
I've always felt who framed Roger Rabbit was underrated. Yes, I am a bit partial 2it...But, have always felt if they came out with a sequel 2it without gender identitying or Disneying it all up (much like they are doing with star wars), it'd sell like hotcakes and do well!! Same with the Rocketeer...
All those early issues of Rex The Wonder Dog are extremely hard to find and go for a lot of money. Has anyone researched specific links between Theodore Sturgeon's "It" and the creation of The Heap, Man-Thing and Swamp Thing? I suspect that it's co-incidence rather than deliberate inspiration.
